In the Silence of These Moments... Chapter 1
This is a start of a new story… Watching the scenes the other day of Gus sitting alone on the empty lot plus the scenes with Alex and then the ending scenes where he’s there when Harley brings the picture got me thinking… Then the other night in chat some of us were discussing what would happen to Gus if and or when Harley is taken to prison… so, the more we talked the more I wanted to write a fan fic so this is my take on what could happen if Harley is taken to prison especially after today's (3/2) episode. I will be using the original script in places for the scenes with Gus and Alex and when I do I will put the *original script* in italics to separate it… Once the script is used it will be my story. Hope you enjoy the story.
**Please no tomatoes*** LOL ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
He stood alone looking at the empty lot and at the house that was being built there. Sitting on the curb he ran his hands over his face as he thought back to what happened not quite an hour ago:
“I’ve decided to take the plea.”
He fell back into the chair of Harley’s desk at the Harley’s Angels Office as the words replayed back in his head and he watched Harley sign her name to the bottom of the confession of Phillip’s murder. The officer took out the handcuffs and was just about to handcuff her when D.A. O’Neil stopped him.
“I want to talk to her for a minute; I’ll come get you when we are ready.”
He nodded and left the office, Jeffrey had agreed to come there so she could say her goodbye there in a place that was comfortable to her. He walked over and closed the door and went back to them.
“Take your time; when I come back it will be time to go.” He said quietly before walking out the door leaving the two alone to say goodbye.
Harley looked at Gus tears filling her eyes. “You did everything you could.” She whispered. As he watched he fought back his own tears, “I’m so sorry baby, I let you down.” He said quietly. She shook her head, “No, Gus you didn’t, you were the only one that really believed in me. Just promise me you won’t close yourself off please.” Gus took her in his arms to kiss her
“Sweetie don’t… Move on —after I’m gone go back to your family be with him, help him through this.” She said.
“Move on?” he asked trying to make sure he breathed. “How am I supposed to not love you? And I’m not going back to them; that was the wrong thing for me to do.” Gus said softly but intensely even as Harley laid her cheek against the back of his shoulder. “There was a time you needed to know him sweetie go be with your family Gus.”
“But YOU are my family,” he said still not looking at her. Before she could say anything Gus turned and held her in his arms as his mouth found hers. As the kiss intensified Harley heard the double hitch in his breathing and her tears began. Pushing him away she quietly said, “Not like this Gus.” and then called for Jeffrey.
When Jeffrey came in the officer was with him and with a nod the cop looked at Harley
“I’m sorry Harley, I have to.” She nodded, “Do your job Jackson.” She remarked shakily. Gus saw that she was shaky so he went to stand a few steps behind her while the officer handcuffed her knowing that was the hardest thing he’d have to watch. With one last look at Gus Harley asked through her tears
“Don’t watch as they take me away.”
“Oh Harley, don’t ask me that babe.” Gus remarked. “I am; please don’t Gus.” she said again.
Walking the few steps it took to reach her, Gus caressed her cheek and kissed her hard, “I love you—Always my love.” He whispered as he kissed her again then squeezed her hand. Doing as she asked he went to the far side of the room turning around toward the wall and closed his eyes.
Wanting to see her again he turned and opened his eyes but when he did Harley was already gone…<br>

In the Silence of These Moments... Chapter 2 ( the italized memory is actual script)
Popping open his can of beer Gus began to drink as he sat there and thought about what had happened after he’d opened his eyes and saw Harley was gone.
When he had turned he closed his eyes again; desperately pleading to God that she would walk back in and be standing there smiling at him letting him know she was there and with him. Hearing the door open he looked up and saw her there.
Reaching toward her Harley stopped him, “I have to know you’ll be okay Gus—I love you.” She replied then reaching toward him she faded from his sight.
“NOOOO!!! Harley?” Gus yelled then he realized his imagination had allowed him to believe she was there. Remembering the kiss they shared he looked at the floor as he tried to fight all the emotion that was going through him. Not caring if the anger surfaced he flipped the desk over scattering the papers and files everywhere.
Grabbing the keys he locked up and after a stop headed to the only place he wanted to be… Harley’s New House.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Standing up Gus turned around and after taking a gulp of beer he walked on the lot of the house he thought as theirs. After looking around he sat down and leaned back against a board as he thought about the last time he’d been here, pulling out the picture she had left there he stared at it for a minute then closed his eyes hearing the same words from before:
Gus: Okay, now, everybody keep your eyes closed. Don't open them up. Nope! Okay. Now.
Harley: Ooh, I can't believe this. Oh, Gus, it's perfect. Zach, isn't this the coolest, most beautiful house you've ever seen?
Gus: Welcome home, babe.
Harley: First the acquittal, now this. You have given me a whole new life.
Gus: I’m just glad that I could help.
Harley: Help? You made all this happen. Without you there would be nothing but an empty lot here, and I'd be in a prison cell. I...I love you. I love you, Gus, I love you so much. I love you, so much.
“But I let you down Coop, I failed you.” He said to himself opening another beer and took a big gulp letting the silence speak for itself as he thought back to when the trouble began when he’d tried to save Alex. He thought about what he’d told Alex when they were here
“if I'd married the girl, if I'd married Harley, she wouldn't feel like she had to go to Phillip by herself and deal with it by herself, that there would be only one way to deal with this. I’m fine.”
“I’m not fine… I’m not fine, I won’t be until Harley’s back with me and she and the boys are here in this house with me.” Gus said and without thinking finished off the beer and wanting oblivion to come opened another as he sat alone with his thoughts.
From the house next door the neighbor peeked through the window and after hearing something called the police when she saw the outline of a man sitting there.
Not realizing he’d been seen Gus sat there as the alcohol swept through him and murmured, “I’m nothing without her.”<br> ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
At The Police Station…<br> Jeffrey was sitting at an empty desk checking over some documents when he heard an officer answer the nearby phone.
“Yes, ma’am what can I help you with?” As he talked Jeffrey heard him as he tried to calm the woman down. Some of the words the officer was saying caught Jeffrey’s attention, “You said there was a strange man just sitting there drinking… afraid he’ll vandalize… construction.”
Not sure if he heard right Jeffrey stood up and went over just as the officer repeated the address: “1518 Coventry Ln. Yes ma’ am we’ll send someone to check it out.” He replied then hung up.
“Officer is there a problem?” the DA asked recognizing the address as Harley’s. “Apparently there is a stranger on the lot of a house they're building and she wants us to check it out before the property gets damaged.” The officer replied.
Jeffrey nodded, “I’m just leaving here, I can go by and check it out and if they're still there when I go by I’ll call for a uniform.”
“Are you sure?”
“Yeah I’m sure, I’ll check it out.” Jeffrey replied and then with a nod left the station. “Knowing who was at the house he jumped in and drove over there. After he got there he saw Gus sitting in one spot holding a beer and staring into space.
Before going to reassure the neighbor he made a phone call to hopefully someone that could come be with him.
In the Silence of These Moments... Chapter 3
They stopped talking when the phone rang and he answered, “Hello?” Listening to the other person that had called he nodded before looking at the people he had been talking too with pain in his voice as he answered
“Where? Okay I’m on my way.” He replied then hung up.
“Coop, keep an eye out here, I’ll be back as soon as I can.” “Okay.” Coop said, “But where ar---.” He stopped when he watched his father grab his jacket and run out the door without another word to him.
Marina looked at Coop, “I wonder where he was going so fast.” “I don’t know but it must have been important.” Coop answered as he watched the restaurant and Marina went to check on the boys.
As Buzz drove he couldn’t stop thinking about what Jeffrey had told him. Stopping when he saw Jeffrey standing by his car; Buzz jumped out and went to him.
“Where is he?” Buzz said immediately and watched as Jeffrey pointed at the lot and the quiet form of the man sitting there alone.
“Gus was with Harley when she signed the plea Buzz and she asked him not to watch as the officer took her away.” Jeffrey replied staring at Gus not sure what to think.
“I really hope you gave them time alone?” Buzz asked.
“I did Mr. Cooper, I’ve already been to the neighbor and assured her everything is fine and that she saw and will see family members here for the next little while.” He answered.
“You did the right thing by calling me O’Neil.” Jeffrey nodded, “Harley’s family was all I could think of when I saw him. Goodnight Mr. Cooper.” The DA said as he left.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Buzz stood silently watching as he saw Gus lift a bottle to his lips and take a deep drink. “O Gus my boy…. Her family is here for you too.” He put his hands in his jacket pockets
“Joe I need your help. I know we never met but your son needs someone now and right now I’m all he has; so please help me help your son. Please give me the right words to say to him so that he will know that he will be okay without Harley during this time.” Buzz asked looking at the stars before he began walking toward Gus.
“Goooooooo Away!” Gus said as he heard footsteps, “Thisss is private prop’ty.”
“When did you start on the hard liquor?” Buzz wondered as he stopped a few feet from Gus.
Gus didn’t move, “I tried two beers, hoping that would start to take away the pain but when that didn’t work I moved on to whiskey.” Gus remarked taking a drink.
“How long have you been at it Gus?”
“Dunno?” he remarked taking a long drink. He knew he couldn’t bear to look at Buzz. He closed his eyes; he couldn’t look at her dad without loosing it.
Buzz walked around to face him. “Look at me?” he asked. Gus shook his head and took another drink. “Harley wouldn’t want you to drink yourself to oblivion.”
“I want the oblivion Buzz --- Go Away!!!”
Her dad sat down by him and took the bottle from his hands, “Hey gimmie that.” Gus replied looking at Buzz
He froze when he saw her dad and felt tears form in his eyes. He grabbed Buzz by the shirt and held on as the memories flooded his being and the heartbreaking sobs began. Gus let go of Buzz and curled up next to him on the lot where their house would’ve stood.
“She’s gone… o god she’s gone.” He kept saying over and over.
Buzz sat still beside the man that he thought of as his son-in-law and laid a hand on his back as he cried the most heartbreaking sobs. Buzz didn’t think he’d ever forget the sounds of Gus’s pain as long as he lived.
“She’s still in your heart Gus and always will be.”
“But she’s not physically here where I can wrap my arms around her and tell her I love her.” He shouted the tears coming harder.
When the worst of the sobs subsided Gus sat up and looked Buzz and saw the man’s tears. “You miss her.” He stated. Buzz nodded, “Yes, I miss her – but my tears aren’t for missing her they are for your broken heart Gus.”
“Me?” he asked Buzz nodded as he handed him a handkerchief to hang on to. “Harley loves you Gus don’t forget that.” “She doesn’t love me anymore.” He replied. “O I know my daughter she never stopped loving you – even after the mistake; she still loves you.” Buzz answered. Gus hung his head.
“She’s my life Buzz.” Gus stated. “I know she is and you are her life don’t doubt that.”
As the memories flooded through Gus again and he said, “I can’t live without her.” He began to hyperventilate at the thought, “Buzz, I—I—can’t breathe.” Gus tried to say.
“I’m right here son; try and relax and take deep slow breaths, your okay.” He replied as Gus grabbed his hand.
When he got his breath back and calmed down he jumped up, “I’m gonna be sick,” he said and ran toward the woods. While he was gone Buzz thought back to what Harley had asked him,
“Daddy, please take care of Gus while I’m gone.” She had asked and he had agreed. Coming back a few minutes later Buzz stood up and saw Gus was shaking. Walking over Gus went into the hug Buzz offered and just held on…<br>

In the Silence of These Moments... Chapter 4
Buzz pulled back enough to see his face, “Let’s go home.” Gus looked back and neither mentioned his tears, “I don’t have a home Buzz.” He said. The older man hugged him, “Come on.” Buzz said as he led him to his car and after Gus got in; shut the door and went to the driver side.
Gus leaned the seat back and closed his eyes. “Tell me if we need to stop on the way home okay?” Buzz replied as he began to drive.
Once he knew Gus was asleep Buzz made a call, “Frank it's me, can you go by Angels Office and bring Gus’ clothes back to Company for me? Thanks Frank; I appreciate it.” He said and hung up. Buzz let the quiet surround him until Gus’ voice broke in, “I’m gonna be sick.”<br> “Okay,” Buzz replied as he pulled off to the side of the road and Gus jumped out and ran. While he waited Buzz thought about Gus and how much he loves Harley. He felt something lean against the side of the car. Stepping out Buzz looked over the hood and saw him leaning with his head down.
“I just needed some air.” “It’s alright, we can take it slow.” Buzz answered.
Without looking up Gus asked, “Where are you taking me, a hotel where I can die in peace? He wondered knowing he’d have one heck of a hang over in the morning.
“No, I’m taking you back to Company so you can stay with us.” Buzz answered.
He turned then to look at Buzz, “I can’t stay with your family.” “Yes, you can Gus – we are your family whether you believe it or not.” Buzz said then continued, “I would like for you to stay.”<br> “But I hurt Harley.” Gus said quietly.
“You are the man that loves my daughter the way she deserves to be loved.” Buzz stated even as he saw the tears.
“Has the air helped?” Buzz asked Gus. “Yeah, but I still feel sick.” He answered. “We’ll take it slow on the way home, if we need to stop again just tell me. Getting back in the car Gus leaned back as Buzz continued to drive.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
As they drove to Company, Frank jumped in his car and headed to Harley’s office to do the favor for his dad. Parking in a spot Frank got out then reached in his back pocket for the keys to the door and headed in that direction. Unlocking the door Frank went in but stopped immediately as he surveyed the room.
“What?!” he mumbled as kicked the door shut. He couldn’t believe what he was seeing.
The room was in a shambles, the desk was turned over, files were strewn everywhere, the hide –away bed was still unmade; the blanket and some pillows were scattered. When Frank walked closer to the bed he saw the one remaining pillow, the one he assumed Gus sleeps on, lying there with an envelope on it; with a written note lying underneath it.
Folding the note around the envelope Frank put them in his jacket then grabbed the bags he saw in the corner and begun packing Gus’ clothes, his files, briefcase and anything else he thought Gus would want or need until he could come back and double check for himself.
Taking another look around he spotted a frame on the floor where the desk had turned over and a drawer had slid out. Going to it he picked it up and turned it over, he smiled when he saw it; it was the picture of his sister and Gus from Reva and Josh’s last wedding. Putting it in one of Gus’ bags he locked up and headed toward Company.
In the parking lot, Frank looked around and saw that his dad wasn’t back yet so he went in and set the bags down in the corner then went behind the counter and began to clean up while Coop waited on customers.
Parking the car, Buzz got out and went around to Gus’s side and opened the door then squatted down and just looked at the sad broken-hearted man in the passenger seat for a minute before waking him up.
“Joe, I’m not you, but he needs someone right now so help me take care of him.” Buzz said softly.
“Gus.” He said putting a hand on his shoulder; he watched him open his eyes.
“Wh--.” He said looking at Buzz. “We’re here.” He stated. Gus looked up and saw Company and all the memories of Harley and him came rushing back and he grabbed for Buzz.
“Take it easy.” He remarked as he helped Gus out of the car and closed the door. He saw when Gus turned slightly pale and they took off running in the restaurant.
“Dad? What is---?” Frank started to ask but was stopped, “Not now.” He answered as he ran with Gus to the bathroom.
A few minutes later, Buzz came out and went to the counter and poured a glass of water and set it down.
“He’d gotten sick a couple of times on the way back and then again just now.” Buzz replied.
“Who dad?” Coop asked. “Gus.” he answered just as Gus came slowly walking out and propped on the wall near the bathroom. Taking one look at him Frank stood with the water and went to him
“Here drink this.” He said. Gus took it with both hands and Frank turned around. When he did he saw Coop make a lunge for Gus and grabbed him by the shirt.
“Back off Coop, take your mad outside.” Frank whispered fiercely even as Gus watched from his spot.
“It’s alright Frank.” Gus said in a gravely rough voice. “No.” was all Frank said as he took Coop outside.
Buzz walked to him, “Gus why don’t you take a hot shower and see if that makes you feel a little better.”<br> Gus nodded, “My clothes?” “Frank went by and got them.” Buzz stated then continued, “I meant what I said I want you to stay here.”
“I know I feel safe here, but the only place to sleep is---.” Gus started to say but stopped.
“—Harley’s room, since I know what today’s been like for you… you tell me?” Buzz asked and Gus understood what he was asking.
“The floor.”
Buzz nodded as they went up and while Gus was in the shower he fixed a pallet on the floor and got a pillow for him then went downstairs.
A little later, Gus came down to find Frank and Buzz talking and Coop who refused to look at him.
“Hey Gus, feel a little better?” Frank asked. He shook his head, “Not really.”
Buzz looked over, “Do you want to try anything to eat?” Gus shook his head, “I think I’m just going to go on to bed.” Buzz went to him, “There is aspirin on the dresser and the light’s on in Harley’s bathroom if you get sick again.”<br> Gus nodded, “I just want the pain to go away Buzz.” “I know, but she loves you remember that.” Buzz said softly even as he saw Gus’s tears. He nodded as he hugged her dad goodnight and slowly made his way upstairs.
“Dad he looks terrible.” Frank stated. Buzz nodded, “when I got to him he was on the lot where Harley’s house is being built drinking himself to oblivion.”<br> “O man, really?” Frank wondered “Yeah, there were a couple of empty beer bottles, and an empty whiskey bottle, and when I reached him he was working his way through a second whiskey.”<br> “He deserves what he gets.” Coop whispered. “No Coop he doesn’t he is the only man I’ve seen who loves your sister the way she deserves.” Buzz answered.
“Has he cried dad?” Frank asked. He nodded, “He hasn’t really stopped Frank – He was with your sister when she signed the plea and then she asked him not to watch as they took her away.” Frank looked toward the stairs as he thought of Gus.
“So he’s staying here right dad?”
“Right, he can stay as long as he wants.” “Dad!” Coop remarked. “He’s staying Coop, your sister asked me to take care of him for her and that’s what I’m going to do.” Buzz said then continued
“Frank I know he’s not your favorite person, but do you have a problem that he stay with us?”
“No Dad.” Frank said thinking about what he’d seen at the office.
As all three men headed up the stairs for the night they stopped on the stairs and listened. They heard the agonizing sounds of a man whose just had his reason for living taken from him.
In the Silence of These Moments... Chapter 5 (Italicized memory is original script)
Buzz checked on Gus before he came down then went to the kitchen to start the day and put the coffee on.
Gus came down the stairs a few minutes’ later in sweatpants, t-shirt, his hair was standing up all over and he hadn’t shaved in two days. He knew just what he wanted to stop the pain and headed to the counter. Leaning over the counter he found it and stood back up pulling a bottle of whiskey with him.
He took two steps back and stopped when he heard, “Oh no you don’t.” then Buzz took the bottle from him. “This is what you get this morning.” He remarked placing Gus’ hand around the handle of the coffee pot.
“No, no coffee… whiskey.” Gus mumbled.
“Yes coffee.” Buzz replied setting down the liquor then the coffee cup. Gently shoving him in a chair he poured him a cup of strong black coffee just as Coop came in from outside. Seeing Gus he slammed the door.
When he did Gus grabbed his head and just held it. “Buzz can you stop the dynamite?” he wondered. “Just sit there and drink the coffee Gus.” he said as Frank came in and set a plate of toast in front of him, “Try eating this too.”
Gus shook his head, “Uh-Uh, I’m gonna be sick.” “No you’re not, take small bites.” Frank said as he sat down with him. While he was eating Frank studied him and saw that he was fighting a hang over and he saw he was there but his eyes were bleak and vacant, and there were tear tracks on his cheeks and he looked like he could cry at any second.
Frank was pouring him a second cup of coffee when Coop set down a dish tub harder than necessary and Gus groaned.
“Coop, knock it off.” Frank said sharply.
After finishing a second cup Gus looked at Frank, “I’m going to go take a shower and I’ll be down in a few minutes, o did you pack the black button down shirt?” “I think, why?” Frank asked. “Because it’s your sister’s favorite and I wanna make sure I have it.”
“I’ll go look while you take a shower.” Frank said as they headed up stairs.
A little latter, when he came back down he was wearing jeans, and a fresh t-shirt. Picking a spot he sat at a booth in a far corner out of everyone’s way and dropped his head in his hands.
“Here Gus, take this, these will help?” Frank replied as he set the aspirin in front of him and he looked up. Taking the aspirin from him and shaking them out he mumbled
“Why are you being nice to me Frank?”
“Because I saw the office Gus and I know you are hurting.” He answered and Gus stopped.
“You don’t want to kill me for hurting your sister?” “No, you love each other and that’s what counts.” Frank said walking away.
Gus sat there by himself most of the day just thinking about how in complete he felt without her. He couldn’t stop seeing yesterday in his mind, he kept hearing the snap of the handcuffs and her words: “Don’t watch Gus.”
Buzz came by occasionally and laid a hand on his shoulder and he’d try to smile but he couldn’t always manage a smile. Gus had noticed that he and Frank had been watching him and they had made sure he ate. He also saw that Coop refused to look at him. He leaned back and closed his eyes to try to hide his tears when he thought of his life and his memories with his girl.
Frank sat at the counter talking to his dad, “He misses her so much dad.” Buzz nodded, “I know he does.” He replied as both went over and they sat down with him, “How ya doing Gus?” Buzz wondered. “I’m hanging in there.” He answered. Then he continued, “I want a drink but being around her family is helping.” Both men placed a hand by Gus’.
“Can I stay Buzz?” he asked softly.
“You can stay as long as you feel you need to Gus, we are your family.” Frank agreed which surprised him and he told him so.
“I know we didn’t get along Gus but you make my sister happy and you treat the boys as if they are yours and that’s all that matters to me.”
“I’ll always try.” Gus answered. “I know.” Frank said.
“Buzz I need to ask you something?” he said. “What?”<br> “Why?”
He didn’t try and misinterpret what Gus was asking so he looked at him while Frank waited.
“Harley asked me too Gus,” he said as he saw surprise in his eyes then he continued, “ She came to me a week ago and told me what she was going to do… I tried to talk her out of doing it but she wouldn’t listen. She then told me that she knew her taking the plea would be really hard for you. Harley then asked me to take care of you for her until she could take care of you again. She knew you would need someone, and made me promise to be the one that was here for you and I agreed. Beside we need you here as much as she knew you’d need to be here.” Buzz said
Gus looked down as he blew out a few calming breaths, “I need some air.” He replied. They watched as he got up and walked outside.
Gus sat down heavily on the bench and after sitting there a few minutes he smiled as he thought of one of their memories, one he’d never forget and he let himself get lost in it. Gus: Lord, you're like superwoman. Not that I'm complaining, I like it. But what is...
Harley: Listen, I want you to tell me something-- be honest. Did you break down and have a cigarette?
Gus: No, I didn't have... No. Look at me. I got all my stuff. I got worry beads, I got my juju beads.
Harley: Okay, that's good. That's good, because I don't want you smoking at all anymore, okay? And I want you to start watching what you eat, and exercising a little bit more, and be careful when you slice bagels.
Gus: Are you saying I'm fat?
Harley: No. And I want you to always, always, always wear a bulletproof vest on the job.
Gus: Bulletproof vest...
Harley: No negotiation, okay?
Gus: Why?
Harley: Because if something happened to you, I don't think I could handle it. I couldn't handle it, because I just... Because I just... I love you so much. Gus: I... You know... Could you say that one more time?
Harley: I love you.
Gus: (Sighs) could you say it one more time?
Harley: I'm not saying it again, because now I've said it twice. You haven't even said it once, I'm so embarrassed.
Gus: The only reason... The only reason that I haven't said it is because, you know, because I've just been chicken scared. I got luggage, I got baggage.
Harley: Don't say it if you don't want to say it.
Gus: Doesn't fit in my overhead compartment sometimes, but it's not that... I do love you. I do. I love you like crazy. I love you.
Gus wasn’t sure how long he had been sitting there but when Frank closed the door he looked around. “Where are you going?”<br> “I need to run an errand I’ll be back in a while.” Frank said then left him. He couldn’t help but smile as he thought of the memory again, “Okay Baby… I won’t smoke anymore, I love you and I miss you.” Gus replied as he stood, stretched then went inside.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Prison…<br> Harley sat in her cell wrapped in her blanket alone, scared, and fighting a fear she wished she didn’t have. Some of the girls there would tease and taunt her at times but for the most part they left her alone.
She tried to block the voices out by thinking of home, her family, her boys, and the man she loved and still loves. She knew she needed to be strong in her but there were times she just couldn’t.
As she sat there thinking an officer came by. “Cooper?” When Harley looked up the officer continued, “You have a visitor.” Harley stood back while the officer opened the door then placed the handcuffs on her. She was taken to the visitors’ room and the handcuffs were taken off before she opened the door.
Opening the door the officer said, “I’ll be right outside.” Harley nodded then turned to see who the visitor might be. Turning she saw Frank standing there and walked to him as tears slipped from her eyes.
“Frankie.” She whispered.
“Sis.” He replied as he hugged her then they sat at a table. “How are you?” he asked. She nodded, “I’m okay, and I miss everybody.”
“How’s dad?” she asked. “He’s good, staying busy with Company and taking care of the boys.
“My boys?” Harley asked.
“They are good as noisy as always and they are working on pictures for you… I’ll bring them next time I come okay?” he said.
She nodded even as tears flooded her eyes, “And Gus?”
“He’s not doing so good sis?” Frank said softly. Harley closed her eyes and made a wounded sound in her throat.
“He misses you and he loves you.” Frank stated. “Is daddy taking care of him like I asked?” Harley wondered.
Frank nodded, “Has he read my letter yet?” “No, not yet… I have it… We had to deal with something first.” Frank remarked.
“What?” she asked somehow already knowing, “A hang over?” Frank nodded “Yeah.” Harley laid her head on her hands.
“Tell him I love him.” She said looking at her brother. “I will. I need to go okay… I’ll be back though.” He said.
When they stood and hugged the officer came in and took her back and Frank watched her go.
Once she was in her cell Harley lay down and let the tears go, “Gus…” she whispered wishing she could hold him.
Back at Company, Gus was sitting in the corner booth again when he rubbed a hand over his heart, “Harley…” he said softly as a tear slipped out of his eye.
He didn’t see when Alan walked in…<br>

In the Silence of These Moments... Chapter 6
“I love you Gus, I love you… I love you.” Her voice echoed in his head. Not realizing what he was doing he reached out as Buzz watched; he heard, “I love you beautiful.” Then he saw Gus drop his hand.
Walking to him, he placed a lunch plate in front of him, “You need to eat.”<br> “I can’t Buzz.” Gus remarked. “Yes, you can… you don’t eat unless Frank and I sit with you and make sure you do. I’m not going let you get sick on my watch Gus, I promised Harley… and right now you’re doing a good job of making yourself sick.” He replied then continued, “Zach and Jude will be here later today, and they’ll need you too.”<br> Gus nodded and her dad moved to another table but neither heard when the door opened and Alan walked in.
“Hello Buzz.”
“Alan.” He replied as he went back to the counter. Over Alan’s shoulder he saw Gus look up.
“I came to get my son and bring him home where he belongs. Gus shook his head so Buzz could see and Buzz looked at Alan again. “He is home and I’m not letting you near him. So please leave.”<br> Gus shrunk farther down in the booth hoping Alan wouldn’t see him, he knew he couldn’t handle him now so he just listened.
“He’s been through too much Alan, he’s not going anywhere.”
“He’s coming home.” Alan said to Buzz “This is his home.” Buzz shot back. Alan walked closer to the counter, “Where is he?”<br> “I’m not letting you anywhere near Gus Alan, I made a promise and I’m keeping it.”<br> “To who?” Alan wondered
“To my daughter.” Buzz replied. Gus saw when Frank walked in and just stood by the door.
Knowing Al wouldn’t leave Gus sat up. “Leave Al, I’m not going anywhere.” Gus said from behind him. Alan turned and saw his disheveled son. “Let’s go son. Once you are away from here you can forget all about her.”<br> Carefully he stood, “No. I don’t want to forget about her.” Gus said as Buzz stood beside Alan.
“Go on upstairs and rest, I’ll check on you later.” Buzz said softly and Gus nodded and all three men watched him head upstairs.
“What have you done to my son?” Alan asked. “Nothing. I won’t let you near him you hear me.” Buzz stated.
Before Alan could reply Frank took him by the arm and took him outside. “Leave him alone Alan.” Frank said through his teeth as he walked him to his car and watched him drive away.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Later, Gus sat on his pallet on the floor and leaned back against the bed and just stared into space through bleak eyes. He heard the knock on the door but didn’t move or speak.
The door opened and Zach came in and just stood there staring at the man he loved. Staring at Gus for a minute he sensed that he was sad so he quietly went over to him and sat in his lap. When Zach did Gus gathered him close and just held the little boy. Getting even more comfortable Zach moved to where he could lay against Gus and hug him at the same time.
Gus realized Zach hadn’t said a word yet and watched with red-rimmed eyes as he felt the little boy begin to rub his back. “He knows I’m sad.” Gus realized as he laid his cheek against the top of Zach’s head and both he and the little boy sat in silence for a long time.
Frank had come to get Zach but stopped when he saw the scene before him. Propping against the door frame he watched as the silence of the scene spoke volumes. As he watched his heart turned over as just being with Zach seemed to comfort Gus.
Not really wanting to but knowing he had to bring Zach down to dinner he straightened up and quietly knocked
“Zach?”
He looked up at Uncle Frank but didn’t move from his position, “Come on buddy, it’s time for dinner you need to come downstairs.” Frank said as he walked in the room and stood by the guys and held out a hand for his nephew.
Laying his head on Gus’ shoulder for a minute Zach carefully stood and looked at Gus then Frank picked him up and before they got to the door Frank turned
“Dinner’s ready if you want to come down, if not dad will keep something warm for you.” He said seeing Gus nod and continued to the door. Zach looked over his uncle’s shoulder at Gus and saw when he turned his head and winked.
A few minutes later when everyone was sitting down and beginning to eat Buzz and Zach looked up to see Gus standing at the bottom of the stairs just watching the family that had taken him in without question. Zach jumped out of his chair and went to him. Holding out his small hand he waited; knowing the comfort Zach quietly offered Gus wraps his hand around the small one and as he sees the love Zach has for him Gus feels a tear roll down his cheek as the little boy walks him to the table.
Sometime after dinner and after Coop and Buzz were giving the boys their baths Frank came too him
“After dad is back down here I need to show you something as well as talk to you.”
Gus nodded, “Anything wrong?”<br> “No but you need to know about something.”<br> “Okay.” Gus answered.
Buzz came down just then, “Gus, Zach wants to see you for a minute.”
Standing he went up the stairs and Buzz grabbed his arm as he went past, “The boys need you.” “I know.” Gus answered as he jogged the rest of the way to the boys’ room. Going in, he went to the beds and stopped when he saw Jude was already asleep. Giving a small smile he made sure he covered then kissed his temple.
Turning he knelt by Zack’s bed, “You wanted something little man?”<br> Zack nodded and reached out to hug Gus, “I love you.” Seeing Harley in the little boy’s he softly said, “I love you too Zach.” Then as Zach snuggled down in the covers Gus covered him up and kissed him. Going to the door he turned off the light and closed the door a bit then went downstairs.
Gus went back to the table and saw a note and an envelope there and sat down. Frank and Buzz watched him for a minute before Frank began.
“You remember when I went on that errand the other day Gus?” He nodded. “I went to see Harley.” Frank replied and saw the shock roll through Gus, “How is she?” he asked.
“She’s hanging in there – but she misses everyone and she wanted me to tell you that she loves you.”<br> Gus leaned back and ran his hands over his face then looked back at Frank as he continued
“Now second, when I went to get your clothes the other day I saw the office Gus and so I didn’t clean up right because I wasn’t sure if you’d want something else so when you’re ready we can go back over there. However, when I got to the bed I saw a note and an envelope that was for you and brought them back.
Gus nodded then handed the papers to Buzz, “We’ll you read these?”
“Are you sure you want me too?”
He nodded, “I’m not sure I can.”<br> Picking up the hand written paper, Frank moved closer to Gus as his dad began to read:
Gus,
I wasn’t sure where to leave this so I figured you’d come back to the office. I am leaving you a envelope that is a letter from Harley that she wanted you to have. I thought you might want to know that even though she asked you not to watch her leave; she saw you as she left.
I’ll be around if you need something – Jeffrey
Buzz stopped and laid the paper down before looking up, “Are you sure?” he wondered
Gus nodded as Buzz opened the envelope and pulled the letter out:
Dear Gus,
By the time you get this I will already be gone away. First let me say I love you and have never stopped. You and the boys are my life. As I sit here I can’t help but remember how much you love me. No one has ever loved me the way you have and still do. You mean everything to me, when we were standing as witnesses in the judges chambers for the couple who were getting married you asked me that day if I meant what I said about forgiveness? … Yes I did.
I realized when all this began after Phillip and you fought so hard to represent me in court that you were sorry about the mistake and you had chosen the side you wanted to be on --- MY side and in understanding that I remembered when you were on my side when Phillip threatened to take Zach years ago.
By now, you know that I asked Daddy to take care of you. I did because I knew my going would be hard for you. But if you choose to go back to your family and help your father I understand. I know you told me you wouldn’t but if you did I understand; there is one thing I ask – please check on the boys occasionally. They love you. Know that you have touched a part of my heart that no one ever has and I’ll always be thankful for that no matter what we went through or may go through.
Take Care of yourself,
Harley.
“O man.” Frank whispered as Buzz put the letter down and passed it to Gus. “I love her Buzz.” “I know.” He said as he saw the brightness in the brown eyes looking back at him.
In the Silence of These Moments... Chapter 7
She knew those hands anywhere. Staying still for a minute she let his hands slowly wake her then she turned to be closer to him.
“Come on babe, I know you’re awake.” Gus whispered as he kissed her ear. Harley snuggled deeper in her pillow. Gus chuckled as he watched her. Moving, where he could see her eyes when she opened them he slowly began to rub her back as she stretched.
“I Love you Gus.” Harley said. “I know you do, open those beautiful green eyes and tell me.” He said and she could tell he was smiling as he kissed the corner of her mouth as he caressed her cheek with his hand. "Just let me kiss you again." He asked knowing Harley wouldn't stop him as he kissed her long and deep.
He watched as she slowly began to wake up. When she was fully awake he smiled down at her. “There are the beautiful eyes I love to get lost in.”<br> “I love you Gus.” Harley said again looking at him. “I love you too sweetheart.” He answered as his lips crushed hers. As he kissed her Harley linked her hand with his. Breaking the kiss Gus looked at their linked hands
“You are my girl Coop, no one else just you.”
Harley smiled, “Your girl huh?” His eyes sparkled as he loosely wrapped a hand on her neck, “Always, Always… I’m lost without you.” He remarked kissing her again.
“Coop I… Hey Cooper?” The voice said and she thought it was Gus but when she looked at him he was staring at her mouthing the words “Love You” but it wasn’t his voice. She heard it again
“Hey Cooper, up and Adam… time for breakfast.” The voice said as Gus reached toward her again but when she tried to say his name he was gone.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Harley opened her eyes and rubbed the sleep from them and she remembered where she was, “It was just a dream.” She whispered as she fought back tears and the officer opened the door then waited to walk her down to breakfast.
Sometime after breakfast Harley was sitting in the exercise yard when Pam, a lady that had become her only friend saw her and came to sit beside her.
“Harley?”
“Hey Pam.” She answered. Pam studied her for a minute, “You’re missing your family and your man?” she asked
Harley nodded, “Yeah I am… I miss him very much.”<br> “Has he come to see you yet?” Harley shook her head, “Not yet… he watched as the officer handcuffed me and my being here isn’t easy for him.” They sat talking and watching the basketball game for a while.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Police Station / prison…<br> “Hey chief?” Officer Roberts replied as he stuck his head through the door. “Yeah?” Frank answered looking up. “There is someone her, says they need to see you about a case.” Roberts answered. Standing Frank followed the officer out and he pointed the person out to the chief as he went his separate way.
Going to the man, Frank held out his hand, “I’m Chief Cooper, you needed to see me?”<br> The man nodded, “I’m Paul Bradshaw sir and I saw something the night of the Spaulding murder Chief.”
“Come in my office Mr. Bradshaw.” Frank said as he showed him in his office. About an hour Frank left the station and headed to see Harley.
Harley saw her brother as they opened the door, “Frank? Is everything okay?” He hugged her then they sat down, “Yeah everything is good sweetie.” He replied. Harley still wasn’t convinced
“Daddy, the boys, Gus?” she answered. “Harley calm down, Dad is okay Coop and I plus Gus is keeping and I on him; he misses you. The boys are good Dad made cupcakes for his class picnic and Jude is great.”<br> “What about Gus?” Harley asked quietly.
“He’s ok, Zach seems to be the only one right now that he’ll let comfort him. But he’s slowly managing to not want to get drunk again. He’s taking it dad by day sis…. He really misses you. I think the fact that you still love him is getting him through.”<br> “I really miss him Frankie, so next time you go by his hotel tell him that.” She asked.
“He’s not at a hotel Harley.” She stared at him as he continued, “Gus is staying at the boarding house with us.” Her brother finished.
“He didn’t go back to Alan?” she wondered. “No, he feels safer with us and dad knew it so dad asked him to stay to be there for your family, himself, and the boys.” Frank said.
They talked for a little longer then Frank left. On his way out he took a detour to the warden’s office to talk with him.
Later that night at Company, Frank stood at the door as he watched Gus put Zach and Jude to bed after he had read then their bedtime story. Seeing Frank there Gus motioned for him to wait then making sure the boys were tucked in and kissed closed the door a bit.
“What’s up Frank?” Gus asked
“We need to talk Gus.” Frank answered as they went back downstairs and sat down.
“Today at work someone came to me and told me that he saw something the night of Phillip’s murder --.” Gus interrupted, “Really?” Frank nodded, “He said he’d come back in a few days with more information. This is where I need you?
“Me?” Gus replied
“Yes, I want you to work with me; you have great detective skills and I need your help.” Frank stated.
“Absolutely Frank… I want your sister free.” Gus remarked.
“I know you do, oh by the way I saw her today and she wants me to tell you that she really misses you.”<br> He watched Gus run a hand over his face, “Go see her tomorrow, she needs to see you… it’s been set up be there by 10 tomorrow morning the warden will tell you where to meet her.
In the Silence of These Moments... Chapter 8
“Beeep…Beeep… Beeep.”<br> He rolled over and slapped at the snooze button when the alarm sounded. He let his hand slip back down over the face of the clock to rest on the floor while he kept his eyes closed and they adjusted to the sun light that was pouring through the window on to the floor where he lay on his back on his pallet.
Hearing a light knock he opened one eye, “Come in.”
Zach carefully opened the door and saw Gus awake and walked in. “Gus?” Zach asked. He opened both eyes when he heard the little voice. “Yeah, little man?” “I just wanted to tell you bye before I left for school.” He replied. Gus sat up and the little boy sat in his lap then Gus cuddled him close. “You have a good day okay and when you come home you can tell me all about it, deal?” Zach nodded and hugged Gus tight. Standing he looked back at Gus and just stared.
“Zach what is it?” he wondered.
“I hope I help Gus.” Zach said quietly. That simple statement took Gus’ breath for a second before he could answer, “You do Zach, you and your brother definitely help and so do Grandpa and Uncle Frank. Now go on and I’ll see you later.” He said as he watched Zach run out of the room.
Leaning against the bed Gus closed his eyes again, “Oh Harley, I miss you baby, so much.” He said then opened his eyes and got to his feet and went to take a shower. After he showered and shaved he walked back into the room drying his hair and stopped to turn on the radio before he went to his bags to get his clothes.
He changed into underwear then he began to pull on a pair jeans, he knew Harley liked and as he did; a song on the radio made him stop and listen. “Harley definitely knows where I keep my better side.” Gus mumbled as he snapped his jeans closed. Going to the dresser he picked up the black button down he had Frank look for and slipped it on, after leaving the top two buttons undone he rolled the sleeves past his elbows. After stepping into his shoes and making sure his hair was dry and done Gus went downstairs.
Buzz looked up when Gus walked to the counter, “Morning.”
“Hey Buzz, I don’t know if I can do this.” He remarked.
Buzz looked at him and put a hand on his shoulder, “You can because you love her.” “It’s not seeing her -- Buzz it is knowing I’ll have to leave her there.” Gus whispered. “I know.” Her father answered.
“Here eat some breakfast.” Gus nodded and began to eat but let his fork clatter to the plate when he heard the voice, “Hello Son.” Alan said as he walked in.
“Go Away Al, leave me alone.” Gus said as he picked up his plate “Frank’s out back.” Buzz replied; he nodded and the men watched him walk away.
“What are you doing to my son Buzz?” Alan demanded. “I told you I’m not letting you get near him; now unless you plan to order food; please leave. Gus has no plans to see you.” Buzz said.
Frank heard the door open and turned, “What are you doing out here?” “Alan’s in there.” Gus answered motioning toward the restaurant.
Frank nodded as they stood together while Gus finished breakfast. When he did Frank took the plate and set it down, “hang on, let me take a picture for Harley that you can bring her.” He replied as he got a Polaroid and took a shot of Gus. “As long as you show the picture to the warden so he sees it nothing else sis can have it and the pictures from the boys.”
“Got it.” Gus said. “I’ll get the boys’ pictures and you can go out this way, so you don’t encounter Alan.” Frank said picking up the plate and going back to Buzz. A minute later Frank handed him the pictures and he was gone.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Prison…<br> Gus pulled into the lot and after shutting the car off jumped out and headed for the warden’s office. Reaching the outer office the secretary took his name and then told him to go on in.
Going in, the warden stood and held out his hand, “Mr. Aitoro I’m Warden Greg Williams” Gus nodded and shook his hand. “I talked with Chief Cooper the other day and we’ve set something up in an exercise yard that’s only used when there is over flow here.
“Oh I was told Harley could have these, if you saw them first.” Gus said pulling out the papers and photo. Williams took them and inspected them, “Her children?” he wondered when he saw the boy’s pictures.
“Yes.”
“She may have these. But I’ll hold on to them for right now and she can get them after your visit. ” Williams answered. “Thank You.” Gus said quietly.
“Now if you’ll come with me I’ll show you to the yard and send Harley in a few minutes.”
As he followed Warden Williams out; he went by the secretary’s desk and told her something then took Gus to the yard. At the door Williams stopped Gus, “You have an hour and a half Mr. Aitoro.” Gus nodded as the Warden left him and he headed outside.
“Cooper?” the officer called as she stepped up to the cell. Harley looked up, “Yeah.” “It’s time for your exercise come with me, by the way Pam the warden wants to see you for a minute.” She said.
“But I’m not due for my time outside yet.” Harley said confused. “Apparently the schedule got worked again; it’s your turn.” The officer said as she opened the door and walked Harley toward the door to the yard as Pam went to the Warden’s office.
“I’ll come get you at the end of the time period okay.” Harley nodded as the officer opened the door then closed it behind her when she stepped outside.
Harley stepped to the edge of the pavement before she stepped on the grass and looked up. He was standing with his profile to her. “I know that profile.” She whispered. It was almost as if the whispered words turned him because in the next instant he turned to face her.
“Oh god… Gus!” she said as he braced himself when she began to run toward him.
When she wrapped her arms around his neck he lifted her in his arms and his mouth crushed hers in an all consuming kiss that spoke of love. Feeling her tears he broke the kiss and looked at her, “I’m here baby… I’m here. I love you.” He said as she cried and he held her tight while he sank to the ground with her.
“How?” she asked as she just stared at him to imprint his face on her brain so she could remember it. “Your brother honey.” Gus said as he traced her features. “The warden has given us only an hour and a half sweetie.” He said as she kissed him hard.
She turned her face into his neck and breathed him in, “You smell so good. He smiled and softly laughed as he just held her.
A few minutes later, Harley looked up as she linked her fingers with his and just stared. She saw it then, the shadows under his eyes and she could tell he’d cried a lot. “O babe I’m sorry.” She said as she smoothed away the fatigue, “Frank told me you had a hangover?” He nodded, “Yeah I just wanted you back and all this to be a dream but that didn’t happen so I got drunk but your dad found me so now I’m staying with them.”<br> “How is everybody?” she wondered. So as he told her about anything and everything they kissed, hugged and he held her tight. “Now that we’ve talked Gus just hold me and be here.” She asked quietly.
He sat with her in his lap and just touched her face, arms and whatever he could as she laid her head against his shoulder.
“Are they treating you okay honey?” Gus asked afraid to hear the answer.
“There’ve been a few scuffles occasionally but nothing major and I do have a friend here, she’s very nice.” “Have you been hurt?” he asked.
“No.”
Gus let out a breath as they continued to snuggle and he sunk his fingers into her hair. “I miss waking up with you.” He whispered in her ear. He kissed her until a voice broke the silence.
“Hmmmmm.” The voice said until they turned to look at another inmate. “So, this is your man?” Pam wondered. Harley smiled as Gus ran his fingers through her hair.
“Pam, this is Gus, Gus this is my friend Pam, the one I was telling you about.” He nodded as Pam smiled, “You got yourself a good one.” She replied. “I do.” Harley replied kissing his cheek.
“I was sent to get you, the time is almost up.” Pam said with sad eyes.
“Nooooo!” she said fiercely as she buried herself closer to Gus. He held her until she had composed herself than carefully she stood fighting tears. Gus jumped up and motioned that he wanted to talk to Pam so she walked to him. She nodded when he finished. “I’ll wait.” She whispered.
Gus took a step toward Harley, when he did she took off running toward the far side and he followed her
“Baby stop. Please?” he said as he ran behind her. Catching her, he wrapped his arms around her from behind.
“I’m here beautiful” he answered holding her tight. “I can’t… I can’t.” she whispered; her tears beginning.
“I don’t want to let you go either sweetheart... I knew coming here the worst was going to be this, Look at me Harley?” he asked turning her to face him.
“I’ll be back, I promise, I’ll be the first visitor here on visitor days and the last out if you want me to be.” He said laying her hand on his heart.
“You don’t have to do that… just come back.”
“I will baby I will.”<br> Gus picked her up and carried her slowly back to where Pam stood. Standing her on her feet he caressed her cheeks, “Go with Pam, check with the warden after I leave sweetheart, He may want to see you.” She laid her hand on his cheek as he held her other hand.
“I love you Gus.”<br> “I love you Coop, I love you. You are always with me.” Gus said as he kissed her deep and lovingly. “Go.” he whispered, memorizing her face, then gently dropped her hand as he saw her tears. Pam slipped an arm around her shoulders and led her away. She turned back and stared at him and he smiled and waved and they walked through the door.
His body seemed frozen; Gus couldn’t do anything but watch her go, “How do I leave when my heart is with you?” he wondered as tears flooded his eyes…<br>

In the Silence of These Moments... Chapter 9
Sorry, this will be short, we needed a Harley chapter-- will get better ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
His body seemed frozen; Gus couldn’t do anything but watch her go, “How do I leave when my heart is with you?” he wondered as tears flooded his eyes…
“Oh sweetie, hang in there, I’ll get you out I promise.” Gus whispered. He couldn’t leave yet, he just couldn’t. At least being here he was closer to her than when he was at Company. Pam walked back out and saw Gus as he ran his hand over his face.
“You wanted to talk to me for a second Gus?” she asked going to him. He nodded, “Harley?” “She’s not said a word since I took her in.” Pam replied. Gus looked out through the fence for a minute and continued not looking at her
“Pam, she’s a cop, you knew that right?” “Yeah.” She replied. “If she ever gets hurt in a scuffle with the other inmates I want you to call me immediately alright?”
“Sure. Your number in her file?” she wondered
He nodded, “The warden gave her---.” He started to say but she stopped him, “I know; he gave them to me to give her after you left the premises Gus, and I will.”
“Thank you. Tell her I’ll be back.” He asked as they walked back through the door and Gus went one way while Pam went to Harley.
As Gus was walking back through the front doors to his car his cell phone rung just as he sat in the car seat. Seeing the id he answered, “Buzz what’s up?” “Hey Gus, umm Zach got sick at school and I brought him home, he wants you.”<br> “Tell him I’m on my way Buzz, I’ll be there soon.” Gus replied as he hung up and backed out of the parking lot. With one last look he said in the quiet of the car
“I love you Harley. I Always will Baby.”<br> Inside, Pam sat on her side looking at Harley who sat without a word. “Did you enjoy the visit?” she asked.
Harley nodded, “Yeah I miss him. I dreamed about him this morning you know.” She stated looking up.
“I figured you did when I saw your eyes as we were going to breakfast this morning.” Pam remarked.
“Do you remember when I was told the warden wanted to see me?” Pam asked. Harley looked at her with puzzlement in her eyes, “Yeah what’d he want?”
“Look under your pillow?”<br> Harley looked at her pillow but didn’t move. She wondered if Pam had lost it. Pam watched her quietly but when she didn’t move she moved to sit by her. When she did she said again, “Look under the pillow Harley?”<br> Harley slowly lifted her pillow and started crying the minute she saw the boys’ pictures. When she started to lift them she felt something else and moved the pictures and there staring up at her with his gorgeous smile was Gus.
Picking up the pictures from the boys she smiled after looking at them she lifted Gus’ picture and stared at it.
“How?” she wondered looking over at Pam
“Apparently Gus brought them for you and the warden ok’d them because he sent me to come get them and told me to give them to you after Gus left.
“He knew you missed him sweetie.” Pam replied as she watched Harley smile as she stared at the pictures.
“I love you Gus.” she whispered even as Gus was headed toward home to take care of the little boys he thought of as his and to be there for Zach who needed him.

In the Silence of These Moments... Chapter 10
Gus pulled into the parking lot at Company and after shutting off the car jumped out and went inside.
“Buzz where is he? What happened?” He wondered.
“First of all, Zach is upstairs with Coop and second he apparently started feeling real achy and stuffy right after lunch and told the teacher; she sent him to the nurse and then they called me. I checked his temp after we got home and he had a low-grade fever. So he’s achy, and stuffy.”<br> “Okay, I’ll check on him now.” He replied as he started for the stairs. “Watch it, Coop is still upset with you.” Buzz remarked; he saw Gus look back at him letting him know he’d heard what he’d said.
Reaching the boys’ room, Gus opened the door quietly and watched Coop while he held his nephew for a minute before going in. “Zach?” he said. The little boy turned his head and reached for him. Holding him Gus whispered, “I’m here little man.”
Coop didn’t bother to move and just watched, “I got sick Gus.” Zach said leaning against his chest. “Grandpa told me, he said you feel achy -- does your tummy feel sick?” He nodded, “not as much as the rest of me though.” He said as Gus gently swayed back and forth.
“Tell ya what; will you let Coop help you into pajamas while I go get you something to drink?” Zach nodded as Coop took him from Gus and he left them and went down stairs.
Buzz already had a sippy cup of ginger ale ready, “Here Gus, O I just got a call from the mom of a friend Zach played with last week, letting me know that her son was sick with the same symptoms that Zach has; so he may be sick at some point as well.”<br> “O well gee that helps.” Gus replied sarcastically heading upstairs and Buzz laughed as he watched. Stopping by the bathroom he grabbed the Tylenol and went back to Zach.
Seeing that Coop had him in his pajamas Gus knelt and Zach looked at him with sleepy eyes. “Here you go buddy, lets take this Tylenol so you won’t be quite so achy then you can have the ginger ale.” Zach took the medicine then Gus held him as he sipped his drink. As Coop watched, his nephew snuggled closer as Gus rocked him.
“Coop you can go now. Thanks for staying with him.”
He shook his head, “I’m not going anywhere, not going to give you the chance to hurt my nephew.” Coop whispered.
Gus’ eyes turned intense with Coop’s words but he continued to rock Zack since he was almost asleep.
“I get the fact that you’re mad at me for hurting Harley… but I WILL not stand here and have this conversation with you in front of your nephew!” Gus answered, “I will talk to you after I take care of Zach, and for the record I would never hurt Zach or Jude… now please leave.”<br> Coop took one last worried look at Zach then went downstairs.
“Gus?” Zach said sleepily.
“I’m here buddy.” “Will you stay with me?” he asked. Gus nodded as he laid the little boy down then covered him up. Sitting on the floor he rubbed Zach’s back
“I miss mommy Gus.”
He looked over, “I know you do little man, I saw her today—she asked me to give you a kiss, can I?”<br> Zach nodded and Gus leaned over and softly kissed his cheek, “From mommy, she loves you.”
“Can you lay with me like mommy does?”
Gus stood and climbed on the bed next to Zach and rubbed his back, “Okay try to sleep buddy Grandpa and I will be here.” Zach closed his eyes and Gus just watched him for a bit.
From the door Buzz watched with a smile as the little boy slept and the man he loved like a father took care of him.
Gus wasn’t sure how long he stayed there but once he knew Zach was asleep he slowly climbed off the bed and went down to Buzz.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Going to the counter he sat and began to talk to Buzz. When Coop came from the kitchen he saw Gus and shot him a dirty look as he slammed down a dish tub. Seeing the look Gus jumped up and went to Coop. “Come with me.” He said taking him by the arm and leading him outside.
“Gus?” “I got it Buzz, Come get me if Zach needs anything.” He responded before closing the door.
Coop wrestled his arm away from Gus as he let go. Gus crossed his arms and leaned against side of Company while Harley’s brother stomped away then turned to glare at him.
“What is with you?” Gus wondered.
“YOU!” Coop shouted, “You hurt my sister deeper then she’s ever been hurt.”
“You wanna hit me again Coop? You punched me once before and I didn’t stop you, I won’t stop you again now, but this will be your last freebie shot at me.” Gus said as he stepped away from the building.
From inside, Buzz watched Gus step away from the building and Coop lunged for him—“O Coop no,” he whispered then he moved to the door where he could hear and watch. His son stopped short when he realized Gus was doing exactly what he said he was doing when he didn’t defend himself.
Gus stood still as he watched the emotions play over Coop’s face as he slowly lowered his hand.
“You hurt her.” He replied.
“I know I did Coop, and you will never know how bad it killed me to know I did.” Gus said.
“Why?” Coop asked
Gus ran his hand through his hair, “Simple answer I wanted to know my biological father.”
Coop sat heavily on the bench and stared at the man his sister loved
“For the long answer, I did the one thing I told your sister I would never do… I told her I’d never let Alan or the Spaulding’s split us. Having Alan in her life was one of her biggest fears. I thought our love was strong enough when we were together that we could still have each other and I could have my biological father in my life.”<br> “But it wasn’t?” Coop stated.
“Our love is strong Coop; don’t ever question that again but with Alan beating at it, its not that strong. So when my father asked me to choose after heaping a quilt trip on me I chose… them… and let the best thing in my life go.” He quietly answered.
“Coop look at me?” Gus asked.
When he did Gus continued, “When you came here, all you had heard was how I’d hurt your sister. What you didn’t hear was how much I love your sister and your nephews; I would do anything for them. Harley is my other half.
I realized Coop after I lost your sister, that my dad was with me and gave me strength and it wasn’t Alan it was the man who had raised me Joe Augustino. I am Joe and Angela Augustino’s son and always will be. The night I came back here I realized I had someone else I could lean on if I needed to and that was your dad.” Gus said as he finished.
“Do you really love Harley?”
“Very much, that’s why being without her is so hard. It hurt us both when I had to leave her today.”<br> “You saw her?” Coop asked. Gus nodded, “I needed to see her, that’s where I was when Buzz called to tell me about Zach.”<br> ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A little later, Buzz said from the door, “Gus?” he turned, “Yeah?” “It’s time for Zach to have more medicine. I’d do it but it's you he wants right now.”<br> Gus turned, “Are we clear Coop?”<br> Coop nodded with a smile then Gus went inside.
Going upstairs Gus went in saw Zach who was awake and lying there. “Hey little man.” Where were you?” Zach wondered, “I was downstairs with Grandpa.” Gus answered.
“I want to go downstairs for a little bit.” Zach replied. “Are you sure?” Zach nodded as Gus picked him up and covered him with a blanket then went down the stairs.
“Coop saw him, “Hey Zach how are you feeling?” “Yucky.” He answered then laid his head on Gus’ shoulder as he sat down.
“Gus since it’s almost dinner why don’t you hold off on his medicine till after he eats,” Buzz requested. “That’s what I was thinking Buzz.” He replied.
“Okay, buzz burger for you Gus and soup for Zach.” Buzz responded going to the kitchen.
As Gus looked down at the little boy Coop sat down, “How’s that sound buddy, have some soup so it can help your achy throat right?” Zach nodded and put his arm around Gus’ neck.
A little later, Buzz set the burger and soup in front of the guys while Gus sat Zach in a chair next to him and they began to eat with Coop watching to see if Zach needed any help.
After they ate Gus gave the little boy more medicine and held him for a while before he stood to take him back upstairs. “Wait Gus?” Buzz said when he saw him on the landing and both Buzz and Coop came over to give Zach a kiss before he went upstairs to bed.
Reaching the boys’ room, he laid Zach down and covered him up just as he opened his eyes. “Go back to sleep Zach, I’ll be here if you need me buddy.” Gus remarked as the little boy closed his eyes and Gus kissed his cheek, “I love you.” He whispered then went down stairs.
“Hey Buzz, when is Jude supposed to be back?”
“Rick and Mel will be back tomorrow sometime, so the day after is when Rick said they’d drop him off – on their way to work.”<br> “Okay, I’m going to shower and stay up here so I’ll say Goodnight.” Gus remarked.
“Night Gus.” Buzz replied before he jogged up the steps.
After taking a long shower and trying to come up with a list of ideas he could give Frank, Gus checked on Zach one more time then went to bed
Several hours later…<br> The sharp ringing of the phone woke Gus as he grabbed the phone
“Hello?”<br> “Gus, its Pam.” She said.
Knowing what he’d asked of her… his next words…<br>
In the Silence of These Moments... Chapter 11
Knowing what he’d asked of her… his next words…
“Harley??” he said in a panic as he sat up.
“She’s at Cedars Gus, the Warden and I are here.” Pam responded.
“Pam, I’m on my way, stay with her!” he said before cutting her off and jumping up as he threw the phone on the bed. Running out he knocked on Buzz’s door.
“What?” he asked when he opened the door?
“Buzz, Harley’s at Cedars.” Gus replied. “What?” he asked still confused. “Get dressed and I’ll explain once we are there. See if Coop can watch Zach and I’ll get dressed.” He said as he went back to his room. He couldn't stop the panic that raced through him. Grabbing a pair of jeans he pulled them on then put a shirt on. Slipping his feet in some shoes he ran down the stairs and met up with Buzz. “Coop will stay with Zach.” He said.
“Good, let’s go.” Gus replied as he ran out the door and Buzz followed as they headed across the street to the hospital.
Finding their way to the waiting room they saw that no one was there and they knew Rick would be out soon.
“Okay Gus, explain please.” Buzz asked. Taking a deep breath he looked at her father, “When I saw her today I had asked if she was ok or had been hurt, she told me there had been minor scuffles but nothing major. When a friend she had made there came to get her I asked if I could see her after she’d gotten Harley settled. A few minutes later Pam came back out--.”<br> “Pam’s the friend?” Buzz asked. Gus nodded then he continued, “Anyway I asked her if she knew Harley was a cop and she told me she knew and as we talked she told me that a few other inmates had been teasing and taunting Harley because she was new in prison but Pam didn’t think they knew Harley was a cop.
I knew with her a cop inmates would be rough on her so I asked Pam, to call me if Harley got hurt.”<br> “So that’s how you knew what was wrong when Pam called. Buzz stated.
He nodded just as Pam, the warden and Frank came in.
“Gus?” Pam said going to him. “What happened?” He asked. When Pam wouldn’t say she glanced at Buzz. “It’s okay this is her father.” Gus remarked then she continued.
“Some of the inmates had been teasing and taunting Harley tonight about why she was in prison and Harley tried to ignore it when I tried to deflect some comments to me but it didn’t work for long. Anyway, some were talking low about her and as I passed by on my way back to my cell I heard one say that Harley looked familiar but she couldn’t place her. I told Harley and she just looked at me. Later I noticed about 4 ladies were staring at her and I heard one say,
“I got it! That’s Harley Cooper, the cop!”
That got them all going about why she was in jail, some thought she might be undercover but one answered by saying, “No, she’s here because she shot her son’s father.” I tried to step in but they knocked me down and turned on her. As she tried defending herself she looked at me and said your name so I ran and told the warden, he called for lock down; told me to call you as he ran out of his office to go where Harley was.”<br> Gus sat down heavily, “Is she okay?” Pam looked at him, “When I got back to her, the warden was with her and so were the paramedics they said there was no broken bones ---.” Gus?” Rick called as he walked out.
His head jerked up, “Yeah?” “You can see her now, there are no broken bones but she’s pretty bruised on her left side.” He nodded then looked at Pam, “Tell the Warden I want to speak to him okay?”<br> She nodded as she watched him walk to Harley.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Going in he quietly closed the door and went to her and stopped when he saw her. Anger came to his eyes when he saw the cuts and scratches on her arm and face. He could see a bruise forming at her shoulder and he knew somewhere else most likely, he could see her eye was starting to change; and a cut at her lip.
“Harley?” he said softly. She slowly opened her eyes, “Gus?”<br> “I’m here sweetie.” He remarked gently stroking her uninjured cheek. “I didn’t think you’d come.” She said. “O baby.” He replied as she reached for him.
“Will you stay?” she wondered as she tried to move but grimaced in pain. “Take it easy baby…. I’m not leaving but I do want to talk to the Warden before he leaves….I’ll send in your dad to keep you company till I come back ok?” Gus said. She nodded, “Tell Pam I said thank you.” She asked. “You got it.” He murmured then softly kissed her mouth.
"I love you Gus." "I love you too sweetheart, I'll be back." he said blowing her a kiss as he winked and he saw her smile.
After talking to Buzz for a second he walked over to Pam, “Harley wanted me to thank you. I wanted to thank you for calling me.”<br> “Gus, I like Harley and she and I became friends ---.” She started to say and he stopped her, “I know you have, she told me this afternoon.” He said and she smiled then continued, “You asked me to watch out for her and I would do it again know that.”
“I do.” He stated then walked over to Warden Williams and Frank.
“Warden Williams?” he said then the warden turned, “Gus how is she?” “She’s really sore and bruised but has no broken bones.” He nodded, “Can I talk to you in private for a minute?” Gus nodded as they walked away as Frank went to sit by Pam until they came back.
When they stopped they turned and faced each other, “First of all Gus let me say this, I know Harley only took the plea to speed her sentence but in watching her for the last few weeks I don’t think she did it.” Gus looked surprised at the warden.
“No she didn’t.” Gus stated,
“Second, let me tell you, that because of what happened tonight I’m going to be moving Harley in order to keep her safe; because I think if she goes back to where she is the inmates will try again. I have talked it over with the chief of police and I have agreed to move her here to the jail where she will be safe. I will expect you and the chief to stand by what I say because I will still be over seeing her case until her time is done.
“Here?” Gus looked on in wondered. “Yes, the doctor says she needs to be here for tonight and tomorrow so he has posted guards and I will call the chief in two days to make sure she has been placed in custody.
“Do we have a deal?” Warden Williams asked. Gus nodded. “I’ll let you and the chief tell her, I’ll be back at the end of the week to check.” He replied walking away.
Gus walked to Frank, “Did he tell you?” Frank asked. He nodded as Frank continued, “I’ll let you tell her.” He replied leaving Gus to have time alone with Harley.
Going back with Harley Buzz stood when Gus walked in, “Since she’s okay I’m going back home… If you need something call me.” Gus hugged him.
“Gus?” Harley called.
“I’m right here babe.” He answered as he kissed her uninjured cheek. When Harley tried to turn she sucked in a quick breath and turned on her back.
“Can’t do that.” She stated. Gus saw her face, “Where, here?” he asked gently placing his hand on her side. “Let me look honey?” When she nodded he carefully uncovered her then lifted the gown
“What’d they do kick you?” he asked biting his lip. She nodded as he saw the bruise on her side. Just then Rick walked in. “Here Harley, I have medicine for you and an ice pack for your side and one for your eye.” He handed the ice packs and towels to Gus while she took the medicine.
After he left Gus wrapped one pack in a towel and placed it on her side while she wrapped the other and held it to her eye.
He started to sit in the recliner when Harley stopped him, “Here.” She requested patting next to her.
Gently climbing on the bed he took the ice and held it to her eye as he said, “Zach wanted me to do this for him earlier?” “What and Why?” she asked. “Lay with him like mommy does because he’s sick.” He answered.
“What?!” she responded. “Sweetie calm down, he’s just got a cold that’s all.”
“You need to be home Gus,” she remarked. He shook his head, “I’m not leaving you and Buzz knows to call me if Zach needs anything.” He stated.
“Beside I need to tell you what Warden Williams told me.”<br> “What?” she asked as she relaxed into him.
“He told me that because of what happened tonight he’s going to move you, so that you’ll be safe.”<br> “Where?” she asked as she fought tears as she tried not to think she’ll be further from Gus and her family.
“Here baby, You’ll be moved to the Springfield PD jail where you’ll be safe and Williams can still monitor your case… because you are still under his jurisdiction.” She looked at him as the tears brightened her eyes, "I get to stay here?" Gus smiled and nodded as he gently kissed her cut lip.
Frank stuck his head in, “Gus the guards are here, I’m going to go stay with dad.” He nodded, “Could you check on Zach for me he’s got a cold.” Frank nodded then blew Harley a kiss and left.
“Guards?” she said looking at him. He nodded, “You’re still a prisoner Harley so guards are outside the door.”<br> Gus gently held her, “Get some sleep babe I can see the medicine starting to take affect… I’m here and not going anywhere.”<br> After laying his arm above her head and getting comfortable he watched as she snuggled into him and seeing her eyes grow heavy he whispered, “I love you Coop.”
She smiled as she put a hand on his chest and went to sleep. Gus knew that if just for tonight he wouldn’t be lost and he too went to sleep.

In the Silence of These Moments... Chapter 12
“What’d you want Frank?” Gus asked when he saw Frank talking to an officer as he walked in.
Frank turned, “Glad you’re here. The witness I told you about earlier that said he had information about the night Phillip was killed is here in my office.
“What took him so long to come back, from what you told me he was supposed to be here several days ago?” Gus wondered.
“I dunno, maybe something came up.”
“Something came up? Your sister’s been in prison for weeks!” Gus said frustrated. “I know just calm down Gus, I need your investigation and detective skills right now.” Frank remarked as they walked toward his office.
“You have ‘em Frank” Gus said as he opened the door.
Seeing a man sitting in front of Frank’s desk, Frank went in as Gus closed the door behind him leaning against it.
“Gus this is Paul Bradshaw, the witness I was telling you about.” He answered then looked at Paul, “Mr. Bradshaw this is Det. Gus Aitoro, he will be helping me. Would you mind telling him what you told me?” Frank wondered.
“Not at all.” Paul answered as Gus came around to sit on the corner of Frank’s desk
“I was out walking that night, I sometimes like to take a walk after dinner so I was walking by Company when I saw a lady, with red hair wearing a coat go in (dressed as Ruth) and a few minutes later I heard screaming and a man screamed “Harley” then a few minutes later I stopped when I heard what sounded like a gunshot. I wanted to check on the woman and make sure she was okay but then I saw a figure come out of the shadows – a man and I know it was a man because when he went in I saw as he past by the porch light he had a beard.
I knew there must’ve been three people in there because that lady hadn’t come out yet. I was looking at my watch when I heard another shot and in just a couple a minutes I saw the man with the beard leaving really fast. I wasn’t sure what to do so I left.” He said as he looked at Gus.
“Mr. Bradshaw, how did you know that the lady you saw that night was the same one on trial for murder?” Gus asked
“Well after I talked to you the first time Chief Cooper something came up with my family or I would’ve been in here sooner. Anyway, after I got back from out of town I heard about the trial of Harley Cooper on the news. Her name rang a bell with me because to me that’s an unusual name for a lady and I realized she must’ve been the lady I saw that night, just in a disguise, so I came in.” he remarked.
“Okay, Mr. Bradshaw I have a question?” Frank said as he picked up a pencil and began tapping it against his open palm, “What time was it when you looked at your watch?”<br> The witness thought, “I’m not sure but I think it was around ten till nine maybe just a little bit after.” He answered.
Frank nodded, “Thank you Mr. Bradshaw if we need to talk to you again we’ll be in touch.” Paul stood and nodded, “If I can help let me know.” He said as he turned and Gus followed him to the door and watched him leave then went back to Frank and sat down.
“Okay the 3 things that popped out at me were 1. He heard two gunshots 2. A second man with a beard went into Company several minutes after Harley and 3. The 2nd shot was fired around 8:50 maybe just a little after.” Gus stated.
Frank and Gus stared at each other for a few minutes, “The only man I know with a beard is ---.” Frank started to say but then looked back at Gus, “Alan.” They said in unison.
“It could’ve been Jeffrey?” Frank stated. Gus shook his head, “Nah, when I think beard I see fuller then Jeffrey’s plus Phillip didn’t have too much to do with him.”<br> “Yeah that’s right… so that leaves Alan.” Frank replied.
“Gus are you okay?”<br> “Frank your sister is what’s important to me, and I’ll clear her no matter what.” Gus answered determined.
“Alright but it’s going to be hard to prove he did it.”<br> “Then we’ll prove it!” Gus stated.
“Okay then lets continue, he said there were 2 two shots, we have to figure why and when the first shot was fired and why Alan wanted to kill Phillip.”
“We will Frank but right now I want to see your sister.” Gus replied and Frank nodded as he watched Gus walk out and toward the steps that led to the holding cells.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Gus walked to the door that led to where Harley was being held and took a deep breath and let it out slowly. He hated seeing Harley behind bars. Going in he walked down to where she was and looked over and saw she was lying down but wasn’t asleep. Gus stopped at the cell and sat down on the floor outside.
“Harley?” he called.
She looked over at him, “Hey You.”
He smiled as he watched her slide closer toward the head of her cot so she could reach him when he slipped his hand through the bars to reach her.
“What are you doing here?” she asked.
“Frank wanted my help with something so I came down and while I was here I wanted to see you.” He said.
“I wish I could go home Gus.”<br> “I know you do baby. I want you home too. Here let me check your bruises.” Gus asked.
Harley moved closer where he could see them. He gently ran his hand over her face as he looked at her eye that was now faded to a purplish black. “Has Frank given you ice for that?”
“Yeah he has but I don’t want it right now.” She answered. He nodded as he pulled the neck of her shirt away from her to see the bruise over her shoulder.
“Sweetheart I’m sorry you were hurt.” He whispered. “I know.” She remarked as she slid to the floor where she could sit as close as possible to him.
“How’s Zach?”
“He’s better sweetie, still stuffy a little and his throat still hurts some but he’s getting better.”<br> “Jude?” Harley wondered.
“He’s good sweetie, he really liked the trip that he went on with Rick and Mel, Me, Buzz, Frank and Coop are spending a lot of time with the boys and I’m still doing their night time routine.” Gus responded.
“You are?” she asked staring at him.
“Yeah, bath time, snuggle time, story time and kisses and hugs.” He answered.
“Tell them I love them Gus.” I will baby.” He started to say but she stopped him, “and daddy, Frank, Coop.” she said.
“They know you do… but I’ll tell them.”
“Gus, can I ask why?” Harley wondered as she reached through the bars to touch his face.
“Why what honey?”<br> “Why do you spend hours with me down here when you could be doing other things?” she stated.
He leaned his face on the bars where she could reach him, “Let me kiss you and I’ll tell you.”<br> Harley leaned in and Gus claimed her lips with his mouth and kissed her for a long time then broke the kiss.
“I do because I love you, and I do because I’m keeping my promise too you. Do you remember the promise I made to you years ago when Phillip had you put in jail?” he asked.
She thought for a minute and he saw when tears came to her eyes as she nodded and took his hand.
“I promised you; you wouldn’t have to do jail time alone and I’m keeping that promise.”<br> “I love you.” She said softly. “I love you too.” Gus answered as he stayed with her for a long time.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Later that night, when Gus pulled up at Company he saw Alan there and waited in his car until Alan left so he wouldn’t have to see him. After Alan left Gus went in and saw one of his employees come in a few minutes later he heard him on the phone and saw him scribble something on a pad of paper then tear the sheet off and after taking a sip of his drink… left leaving the pad of paper on the table.

In the Silence of These Moments... Chapter 13
Gus sat at one of the tables in Company continuously running his hands through his hair. He was trying to think of some contacts he knew were Alan’s. He slowly began to go through his brief case that was open in front of him. Realizing what he was looking for he began to frantically go through his brief case removing everything to look for it.
Buzz stood watching him for a minute then getting a coffee cup poured the coffee then brought it to him.
“Here you go Gus.” Buzz replied sitting the cup down in front of him.
“Thanks.” He said as he picked up the sugar and Buzz watched as he began to put spoon after spoon into his coffee.
“How much sugar do you need?”<br> “I like it sweet.” Gus answered.
He heard his name called and turned toward the stairs as Coop came down carrying Zach with Frank behind them carrying Jude, “Yeah.” “The boys want to hug you before they go down for their naps.” Frank answered.
Frank walked up with Jude and passed him to Gus as the little boy kissed Gus’ cheek. “You have a good nap buddy and I’ll see you when you wake up okay.” Gus answered. Jude nodded then Frank stepped back as Coop held Zach on his side as Gus kissed him then tickled his cheeks making him laugh. “I’ll be here when you wake up okay.” Zach nodded then both men took the boys upstairs.
Gus turned back to his briefcase and looked through his files, then threw his files back in and without realizing it put the pad of paper that had been on the table in the briefcase and closed it.
“Frank?” He asked when Harley’s brother came back down.
“Yeah? “ Have you seen my notebook that I kept some of my notes in, it’s about this big and about this wide?” Gus responded gesturing with his hands.
Frank shook his head, “Was it not in the bags that I brought over?” Gus shook his head, “No, I didn’t see it.” He replied. Frank stood still thinking. “It still may be at the office.” “I need it.” Gus said. “Do you want to go back to the office and look?” he asked.
Gus just stared at empty space and didn’t say anything. Frank tried again, “Gus?” He slowly looked up and quietly said, “Yeah.” “I’ll take you to the office if you want.” Frank said knowing Gus would have a hard time there.
“Okay yeah let’s go.” Gus replied as they walked by Buzz and Gus stopped and looked at the ceiling where he knew the boys slept.
“I’ll be here Gus, go ahead.” Buzz stated. He walked to her father and they just looked at each other for a minute, “Thank you.” He whispered and with that the men were gone.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Harley’s Angels Office…
They pulled up in lot and stopped and Frank watched as Gus stared at the front door. “On second thought, let me go in and find it Gus?” Frank asked
“No.” was his simple answer as he got out of the car and headed toward the office.
Gus was putting the key in the lock when her brother placed a hand on his shoulder as a show of strength. He acknowledged the gesture we a small smile as they opened the door and went in.
He slowly walked in and Frank booted the door shut behind them. Both stood still as Gus surveyed the room. “Desperation so painful ripped through me that I…” he let the sentence die as he motioned to the room that was still in shambles where the desk was still overturned, “I had to get out of here -- I miss your sister Frank.” He nodded, “I know you do.”
“Why don’t you look for your notebook while I straighten up?” Frank wondered.
Gus nodded as he slowly began looking, as he did memories of that day assaulted him. He continued to look but couldn’t find it. Turning he walked to the over tuned desk, knelt and gently ran a hand over the side of it as he remembered the kiss that he and Harley shared the day she asked him not to make his life a prison.
Tears flooded his eyes as he remembered. “Frank, can you help me stand the desk up?” Gus asked. “Yeah.” He replied as he saw the tears in Gus’ eyes as he walked over.
Together both men turned the desk right side up and as they did Gus saw his notebook he was looking for. After making sure the desk was steady he leaned down and picked it up, “I found the notebook Frank, we can go now.”
Frank nodded, as he followed Gus out and after locking up they went to the car.
They had just gotten in the car when Frank’s cell rang and he answered.
“Hello.”<br> He listened for a minute, “What? Okay, tell her to hang tight… I’ll be right there.” After he hung up, he looked at Gus.
“Come on, you’re coming with me.” Frank said.
“Why?” Gus asked. “Something has happened at the station.” Frank replied as they left and headed toward the station.
“What is it Frank?”<br> “Everything’s okay I promise but sis needs you.”
In the Silence of These Moments... Chapter 14
“What happened Frank?” Gus wondered
“I don’t know… but that was an officer that said when he went to check on sis, she wouldn’t talk to anybody and it was like she was shutting down.” Frank answered as they pulled into the parking lot then both jumped out and ran through the double doors.
An officer met them as they came in, “Chief, I don’t know what happened I went to check on Harley and when I did she was sitting on the cot staring into space and shaking and we could see tears in her eyes. I tried to talk to her but she just kept shaking her head. Officer Parker is with her.” Frank nodded as he dismissed the officer then both men headed to the holding cells.
Reaching them, they began walking toward the voice that was softly talking to Harley.
Seeing the chief and Det. Aitoro, officer parker stood from the chair she had been sitting in. “I didn’t want to leave her.” The chief nodded his thanks as both men looked over to see Harley rocking back and forth slowly with her arms wrapped around herself. Gus couldn’t imagine what had happened that would have left her so vulnerable.
“Let me in there Frank.” Gus stated quietly as he looked at her brother. “We can’t Gus, we promised Williams.” He said.
“You told me she needed me Frank, and you wouldn’t have brought me with you if you weren’t going to let me see her. Let me see her Frank please.” Gus asked.
Frank looked at his sister then at Gus as Officer Parker passed him the key and quietly walked back to the desk.
Carefully, he slid the key in the lock and opened the door. Nodding at Gus he replied, “Go… When you get her calmed down I’ll come back.” He said as he locked the cell behind Gus as he stepped in.
Frank took one last look at Harley, “Call me when its okay.” then walked down to wait at the desk with the officer.
Gus walked over to Harley and knelt in front of her, tilted her face up to where she could see him, “I’m here.” He said as he pushed her hair behind her ears and just looked at her.
“What is it Harley?”
She slowly stopped rocking, “Gus?”
“Right here Coop.” he answered then balanced as she clung to him and he pulled her to the floor with him. Turning he leaned against the cot as he cradled her between his arms and legs. He could hear her tears as he gently rocked.
“It’s okay sweetie, I’m here now.” He whispered as he kissed her hair. He felt her slowly relax into him and neither said a word until her tears subsided.
“Baby what upset you so much?” Gus wondered.
“Did you hear officers talking about the murder… were they talking about you? What?”
“I had a visitor?” she mumbled but he couldn’t understand her since her face was turned into his neck.
“Sweetheart, let me get Frank back and you can tell us both.” Gus stated; she nodded even as he called for Frank.
Frank came back and let himself in the cell then sat on the other cot across from them.
“Hey sis why don’t we all sit together and you can tell us why you got upset.” He said.
“No.” she replied. Gus looked at him, “She feels safe where she is.” Frank nodded as he watched them on the floor for a minute.
“Tell me what upset you babe.” Gus asked quietly.
“I had a visitor.” She remarked again. “Who sis?” Frank asked.
“It was Alan.” She said softly.
Gus stared at Frank over Harley’s head as both men’s eyes turned to steel. “What‘d he say honey?” Gus asked.
She closed her eyes as if to bring those moments back into focus. “He came walking in here laughing and smiling at me. He said it was nice to see me where I belonged behind bars but too bad it wasn’t in the state prison where I belonged.” Gus held her tighter. “I told him, he got what he wanted he could leave me alone. But he shook his head and started laying in on me how I was no good to anyone and never would be.” Frank knelt in front of her then and took her hand after looking at him she continued, “He then blamed me for him loosing his sons… that I coerced Gus into choosing sides and if it weren’t for me you would be a Spaulding Gus.” she said leaning back on his shoulder as she looked up.
He looked at her, “Sweetie, I made my choice free and clear when I chose to be your lawyer. When I let you go and chose them… I lost who I was… I won’t lose you again, he was wrong I chose free and clear who my life is with and it’s with you and the boys.” Gus replied.
“Not if my life’s in here.” Harley murmured.
“Anyway he told me I was a loser and that he would never allow his grandson to be a Cooper when he was a Spaulding.” “Baby, neither I nor your family would let that happen,” Gus stated. She touched Gus’ cheek, he then told me I was where I belonged and walked out.” She finished as she leaned into Gus again and he held her.
“Sis I’ll make sure Alan can’t get to you again ok.” She nodded. “Gus I hate to do this but we both have to leave now.” Frank replied as he stood. He nodded as Frank helped Harley to her feet then he stood.
Harley turned as Gus put his arms around her, “I’ll be back sweetheart I promised. I’m going to make sure that you have a home to come back to.” “Gus, no.” Harley started to say but he placed a thumb over her lips, “Yes, I am.” Then he claimed her mouth with his and her heart slowly rolled over in her chest. When they broke the kiss he quietly said as he stared into her eyes.
“I love you, you are my girl remember that.”
She smiled, “I love you too.”<br> With a squeeze to her hand he smiled; she watched as both men walked out of the cell and Officer Parker locked it behind them.
When they reached the door Frank turned, “Take my car.” He replied handing Gus the keys. “I’ll get an officer to drop me off after I deal with Harley’s visitor list.”<br> “Thanks Frank.” Gus replied as he took the keys and left the station.
Spaulding Mansion…
“Nolan, I don’t care!” Gus said as stormed past the worried butler and into the study where Alan was working.
He stopped short when he saw the man that was with Alan; it was the man he’d seen at Company so before saying anything he decided to listen, “But Mr. Spaulding I did what you asked about Phillip.” The man said.
Gus had heard enough for now and knocked loudly on the door jamb as he angrily walked in. Both men turned, “Get out!” He stated looking at the employee. He nodded after seeing the look on Gus’ face and quickly walked out of the room.
“Well hello Gus. What can I do for you?” Alan asked calmly but with a slight smirk.
“Did you enjoy yourself today?” he spat out with disdain. Alan smiled, “If you mean seeing Harley – yes I did.”
“Why you arrogant pompous ---.” Gus started to say but stopped as he just stared at the man in front of him. “Do you enjoy taunting her, terrifying her, belittling her?” Gus wondered.
“Yes.” Alan said. Gus took several steps to lessen the space between them then stopped.
“Why??” he asked frustrated.
“Because she’s not worth it plus she took my sons.” He stated.
Gus’ eyes turned cold as he pulled back to punch Alan. Looking at the man as he warred within himself he stopped, “You know what you’re not worth it.” He stated then let his arm drop.
Turning to leave, Alan’s voice stopped him, “Gus.” Gus didn’t turn around until he reached the door, “Mr. Spaulding, it’s not worth it to me.” He said as he left the study, left the mansion.
Back at Company Gus walked in and Buzz saw the fury on his face as he watched Gus go to his briefcase and began going through it like a madman.
Finding what he was looking for, he laid the pad of paper down and reached for a pencil. Taking the pencil he slowly colored over the imprint that was in the paper.
The more he colored over the imprint this is what he saw:
Mr. Spaulding needs blanks to replace what was used… Phil
Gus stared into space as he whispered, "Alan." Even as he said it he knew there was a question in his voice
