This is a story I began about GusH after the story Line on Guiding Light stated that Gus was sterile.
This is about Gus / Harley & a new baby that they have within the story while Gus is trying to remember the FBI Operation that caused his sterility.
This story was begun in Nov. / 2006

Chapter 1
This is my new story… As with my stories there will be twists & turns. The story is based on the recent storyline about the baby for Gus & Harley. Hope you will enjoy and as always let me know what you think. ~~ GG
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
As the man stands watching his wife he can't help but be flooded with love for her, this woman who is his rock, his best friend, his lover, his wife....His Life. He can't help but worry about what she'll hear today... But whatever it is he knows he knows that their love will be stronger.
“Baby let me go with you to the appointment please?” Gus asked as he watched Harley get her jacket. She placed her hands on both sides of his face, “I’ll be gone forty-five minutes tops, and all Dr. Sedgewick wanted was to tell us the results in person since we’ve been trying—.”
“Honey, I maybe a father now.” Gus stated. “—I know sweetie just please sit tight. I’ll be home as soon as I know anything. I love you.” She said kissing him as she went out the door.
As the time slowly went by Gus couldn’t stay still he paced in his restlessness, he looked at the clock he was hoping they were getting the news they’d hoped for.
“This will be the longest 45 minutes of my life.” He whispered with worry over Harley as he continued pacing not realizing at the same time Dr. Sedgewick was coming into her office.
“Hi Harley, sorry I’m running a bit late. How are you today?” the doctor asked. “I’m fine, nervous about the results but doing fine.” She said as the doctor sat.
“Where’s Gus?”
“I asked him to stay home, whatever the outcome I wanted to be the one to tell him. I wanted to be able to prepare myself to tell him if the news wasn’t good and if it is I wanted to tell him.”
“Alright, lets get the results.” The doctor replied rounding her desk. Pulling Harley’s file she opened it to check the results. “I know you & Gus have been trying for a while with no luck. The lab ran your blood work 3 different times to make sure the results were the same. It looks like you’ll be parents sometime in July.”
Harley sat there not fully comprehending what Dr. Sedgewick had just said. When she finally did she looked up, “I’m pregnant?” The doctor smiled, “You’re pregnant—the baby will be here in July.”
She couldn’t stop the tears that came in her eyes as she stood up and the doctor gave her a prescription for the vitamins she’d need as well as ask her to schedule her next appointment. Harley left after scheduling her appointment & went to get the vitamins before heading home.
Meanwhile…
Gus was still pacing in front of the couch where she’d left him. Sitting he dropped his head in his hands. He couldn’t stand it anymore he was going insane, was she pregnant or not. As he lifted his head he heard a car door close & hoped that was her. Jumping up he rounded it to prop on the back.
Walking through the door she saw him & stopped.
“Well?” He asked just as he saw the tracks the tears had left on her cheeks. Seeing that his heart broke – she wasn’t pregnant.
After taking off her coat she walked in front of him taking his hand she held it palm up as she placed a pacifier in it then looked back to his face. He stared down at it for a full minute before jerking his head up.
“I’m pregnant.” She replied smiling.
“What?” he asked stupidly. Then he snapped out of it.
“We’re having a baby!” Harley nodded as he picked her up & kissed her with so much love. Breaking the kiss he stared at her then carried her around to the couch and sat with her in his lap.
“When?” he wondered
“Sometime in July” Harley answered as he stroked her hair.
“The doctor’s sure?” Gus asked unsure as he remembered the mix up at the hospital shortly after they begun trying.
Harley saw the worry in his eyes and trying to take it away she began to caress his face, “She had the lab run the test 3 different times to make sure the results were the same. It’s my blood work honey, we’re good & 9 months from now we will have a child.
As she rested her head on his shoulder Gus placed a hand lightly over her stomach. “We’re going to have a baby sweetheart.” He replied softly then holding her close they both sat quietly together as they thought of the new life that was growing inside her.

Chapter 2
Quick mention: Gus & Harley’s house is completely finished for this story. This chapter takes place 2 weeks from the last. Enjoy! ~~ GG
As Harley rolled over her eyes flew open and she jumped up. Gus felt the bed move & opened his eyes just in time to see her run to the bathroom. Throwing the covers back he stood & headed to tend to her. Opening the door he propped on the doorjamb and waited. Pulling a washcloth from under the sink he wet it, having it ready for her when she slowly turned around.
Seeing him there; Harley smiled taking the washcloth from him. Once she washed her mouth out Gus stopped her.
“Come back & lay down sweetie.” He said taking her hand as he led her back to the bed; helping her lie down he crawled up behind her.
“I rolled & my stomach pitched… felt like I was getting seasick.” Gus smiled. “I want you to lay here for a bit so your tummy can settle.”
She turned on her back to look at him, “I can’t honey… so much to do today for thanksgiving.”
“Harley, your dad will be here in an hour to start the turkey. Your brothers & I will be there to help. The boys will help us with the small things, don’t worry… all I want you to do today is take it easy for a while at least until the worst of the morning sickness passes. Okay?” Gus asked.
“I’ll take it easy but I’ll still help.” Harley said.
“I know.”
Gus smiled as he kissed her. “Good Morning Coop.”
She smiled as he held her close. “Gus, are sure you are okay with us telling the family today?”
“I told you I was honey… I think this is a perfect time. This is a day for giving thanks & why shouldn’t we give thanks for our little one.” He finished just as his cell phone rang.
Grabbing his phone he answered it, “Aitoro.”
Listening for a minute, he asked the caller to hold on, “Babe, this is the station they need me to come in for a bit.”
“But, it’s Thanksgiving Gus.” She stated. “I know… but something came in on a case & they want me to check it out. I promise it won’t take long. I’ll be home in an hour tops.”
Harley nodded, “Alright, I’ll call you in an hour if you’re not here.”
“Deal.” Turning back to the phone he told the caller he’d be there in 10 minutes and hung up.
After getting dressed, Gus came to her side of the bed, “Would you at least stay in bed until your dad gets here, you need to rest before the activities start?” She nodded, “If it will make you feel better, yes.”
“It will thank you...I’ll be back in an hour I promise.” He said kissing her then headed down stairs.
Once he was in the car he went in the opposite direction from the station… toward his wife’s surprise.
Dialing the number he had he waited for her to pick up, “Susan, it’s Gus, sorry about earlier… had to get away from your mom, I’m two minutes from the airport.”
“Okay, I’ll wait for you in the pickup area.” Sus replied. “Okay, I’ll be in a black SUV; I’m almost to you now.” She said she saw him so they hung up.
Stopping, he hopped out and stepped up on the curb, to see his step-daughter for the first time. “Susan?” he asked hesitantly. She smiled, “That’d be me. It’s nice to finally meet you.”
“It’s nice to finally meet you too.” Gus answered smiling. “Come on lets get you to your mom. She’ll call me if we don’t get back soon.”
“Why?”
“I’ll tell you in the car lets go.” He suggested as he put her luggage in the back then closed her door after got in the rounded to his door.
As he did Susan had a chance to look at him & smiled at the fact Gus made her mom so happy.
They talked on the way home. Gus was hoping this could be a time where he could begin to get to know Susan & she him. Nearing the house Gus told her what Harley would probably do. Pulling in the driveway he saw Buzz’s car & told Susan who was here.
“This isn’t Mom’s house…” she replied.
Gus smiled, “No, after a few things that happened with Phillip, the house was bulldozed & your mom & I decided to rebuild a house that was strictly ours. So, this is our house & your mom loves it very much.”
Getting out of the car, Gus told her that he’d come back out for the bags in a few minutes.
Letting them in he stopped, in the family room, “Honey?” he yelled.
“In the kitchen with Daddy.” She answered
Susan stood where she could see her until Gus sent her the signal “and waited. “Sweetie, I need to see you in here for a minute.” Gus remarked as they both waited. Harley walked in the family room & went to Gus and kissed him.
“Did you get the stuff at the station taken care of?” she asked.
Gus smiled, “Well, actually I didn’t go to the station… I had to pick up something I got for you.”
“You got me something?” she replied excitedly.
“Yep, close your eyes for a minute.”
When Harley did, Susan stepped out and in front of her mom as Gus moved to the side. “Okay babe, open your eyes.”
“Hi mom.” Susan said as she hugged Harley.” “Susan, how—when…?” she asked a bit confused.
“Gus picked me up at the airport.”
“I knew you missed Susan & I wanted to give you something for Thanksgiving, so a couple of months ago during one time Susan had called here, I talked to her about this before you got on the phone & she agreed.” He answered as he saw a tear roll down her cheek.
Going to her, he smiled, “What’s wrong honey?” “I ca-n’t be-lieve you did this.” She tried to say. Holding her close he placed his hand on the nape of her neck, “Shhhh, sweetie I know you missed her & I wanted to do this. I love you.”
Harley wiped her eyes, “I love you too. I’m sorry, I’m a mess, must be the hormones.”
He laughed softly, “It’s okay baby. Go see Susan.”
Susan was smiling as she watched her step-dad; she could see how much he loved her mom. When Harley came over Gus was with her, “Susan I’m going to get your bags out of the car and I’ll put them in the guestroom that’s off the family room down the hall to your left while you & your mom catch up.” He replied as he went out the door.
Several hours later…
Everyone was gathered around the table after eating Thanksgiving dinner when Gus stood up, “Hey everyone Harley & I have something we’d like to say—.” He remarked looking around at Buzz, Frank, Coop, Marina, Susan & the boys. “—Today is a day that we can stop & give thanks for our blessings & so Harley & I thought it was a good time to tell you something we are thankful for.” Harley stood beside him, “We decided today was a good time to tell our family that in July Gus & I will be having a baby.” Harley finished as the men whooped with laughter & hugged them both & Marina & Susan screeched with glee.
Later that night…
Gus & Harley were coming out of the bathroom when Susan knocked on there door, “Can I come in?”
“Sure.”
She sat on the end of the bed, “I just wanted to tell you both that
I’m happy for you.”
“You are really?” Gus asked.
“Yeah, Gus I can see how much you love mom & it only makes sense that you want a child together… I’ll be glad to baby sit any time. Gus, can I talk to you in the hall for a minute?”
He nodded then kissed Harley lightly then followed Susan out in the hall. “What’s up Sus?” She stood in front of him quietly, “I wanted to say thank you for loving mom the way she deserves. And if you don’t mind I want to try & get to know you more while I’m here.” She remarked.
“Susan, first of all, I love your mom very much and will never stop, I love her children as if they are my own & that includes you… and I would love to get the chance to talk with you and get to know each other.” Gus replied kissing her cheek softly.
“You’ve had a long day Sus, get some sleep & we’ll talk in the morning. I gotta get back to your mom.” He said with his eyes twinkling.
As she headed downstairs she turned around, “Gus?” He turned, “Yeah.” She came back up the steps & hugged him. She said. “I love you too.” He answered. Then they both went their separate ways.

Chapter 3
Hi Everyone! I am sorry “Heart of A Child” (HOAC) was put on hiatus so soon after it began. I had to finish out my semester. That being said, I am now on Christmas break until January 9th so I plan to get this story rolling. In this story I will mix my own story with Gus’s secret now on GL. So, sit back and enjoy! ~~ GG
Susan & Harley were sitting at the kitchen table, the next afternoon, talking when Susan saw her mom stop & hold her hand out even though she never stopped their conversation. Looking up, Susan saw Gus leaning against the door jamb watching Harley with a gentle smile. Coming to stand beside her at the table Gus slid his hand in hers and kissed her knuckles.
“Sorry to interrupt, Hi Susan,” he said smiling before turning to face his wife. “Hi Babe.” He replied dropping a kiss lightly on her lips. “You feel okay?” She smiled, “Yeah I’m doing okay, except the morning sickness.” Kneeling beside her he pushed her hair behind her ear, “I just came in here to tell you; that both our sons are in their rooms flaked out for their afternoon naps.
She stared at him, “You’re kidding?” Gus chuckled, “No, I’m not. While their out I’m going to try to get some paper work done on some cases.”
“Are you going to the station or are you going to work up in the office?” She asked.
“Up in the office, I don’t want to leave you so I figured here would be good… I came in to make some coffee.” He replied walking to the coffee pot & beginning a pot.
Susan sat in silence just watching them she couldn’t help but compare Gus to what she remembered Phillip being like. Harley had finally managed to find a man that loves her the way she should be.
After get his first cup ready Gus went to the table, “I’ll be upstairs if either of you ladies need me. Call me if you need me.” He remarked kissing Harley’s cheek then winking at Susan. As he started up the stairs he smiled when he heard, “Mom how did you find him??”
Checking on the boys one more time he headed to the office & closed the door slightly. Sitting down he booted up the computer & began to pull the files he wanted to look through while he waited. After sending out some emails Gus got to work.
He didn’t know how long he’d be working when a quiet knock on the door broke through his concentration.
“Come in,” He called. When Susan walked in he looked up, “Hey there.” She walked over & placed a plate on his desk, “Harley asked me to bring these to you.” She replied motioning to the 5 chocolate chip cookies.
“My favorite.”
“Hey Gus, can I say something to you?” Susan asked.
“Sure, have a seat.” He said as she sat on the small sofa across from him. She looked at him surprised when he stood & walked over to sit beside her, “Phillip would’ve never done that.” She thought to herself.
“What’s on your mind?”
“First, I wanted to thank you for bringing me home.” She said quietly looking down at her knotted fingers. His heart broke for his step daughter, he could see she was scared to face him a man she’d only heard about.
“Susan, look at me please.” When she didn’t he very gently tipped her chin up so she could see his face. “You are very welcome sweetie. Your mom missed you & I wanted a chance to get to know you.”
“You did? Phillip never took…” she started to say then slapped a hand over her mouth remembering who she was talking to.
Gus chuckled, “It’s okay, finish what you were saying.”
“Are you sure?” He nodded for her to continue, “Phillip never took the time where I was concerned. I don’t think he knew exactly what to think about having a step-daughter. Are you the same way?”
He knew what she was asking, “Well, I may have Spaulding blood running through my veins but I am in no way a Spaulding, I am not like Phillip. My parents were Joe & Angela Augustino, that’s who I am… I want to know my step-daughter; I want her to know me.”
For some reason, what he had just said hit her & brought a flood of tears to her eyes & she buried her face in her hands.
Gus saw the tears & gave her a second to compose herself as he gently pulled her hands away.
“You mean it?” she asked softly.
“I didn’t mean to make you cry sweetie & yes I meant it. I want you to know that you can come to me whenever you need too.”
Wanting to give her time & not do to much he squeezed her hand, “You’re mom will send a swat team after you in a few minutes, I’ll bet, why don’t you go spend some time with her or your brothers while I finish up & then I be down for dinner.”
“Okay.”
Standing she wiped her eyes, and then tried to give him a smile. Walking her to the door he watched her leave; turning around he went to the desk & sat again. As he did he heard the signal for new email & pulled up his email.
He got a puzzled look on his face when he saw who it was from…
To: Gus Aitoro
From: Robert Jenkins
Subject: Agent Aitoro
“Nobody’s called me Agent Aitoro in a long time.” He remarked out loud as he stared at the heading. “Why, would Rob be notifying me now…?”
He stared at the heading another minute before he continued reading:
Gus,
I know it’s been a while since we spoke but I need you to call me about some information on one of the cases you were given not to long after you joined the bureau. I don’t want to talk about it via email but first I suggest you access your bureau file then call me ASAP.

Gus flopped back in his chair. He was perplexed as to why all this had to do with when he first joined the bureau. “He wants me to access my file… we can do that.” He mumbled as he sat up; picked up the phone & dialed a series of numbers. He knew every agent that was at the bureau at one time or other had a file, he just assumed when he left there it was put away. Reaching over as he waited he opened his note book he kept with important info & numbers & found his FBI information he was looking for. Entering his file number he waited.
“That can’t be right.” He whispered. Starting over he entered the number again.
Hanging up, he didn’t move, “Sealed… Why has my file been sealed?”
Picking up the phone again, he found Rob’s number & dialed.
“Rob, its Gus… why the hell has my filed been sealed?”
“Can you meet me somewhere, Gus, its important?” Rob asked.
“Now?”
“Now.” Rob remarked.
Rob told him where then hung up. Standing up Gus went to the kitchen & pulled Harley aside,
“Hey Harley?” Gus replied. Harley looked up when she heard the way he said her name, she knew something was wrong.
“Yeah.”
“I need to go out… I was just notified by a buddy from the Bureau--.”
“As in FBI that Bureau?” she interrupted. “That would be the one. Apparently my file has been sealed & my friend knows why.” He stated.
“Do you want me with you?” Harley wondered. “You need to stay here & rest, I’ll be back soon.” He said as he kissed her hard then was out the door.
At Towers…
Gus stepped off the elevator & saw his friend, going over he sat down. “Hey Rob. What’s going on?”
“Hey Gus.” It’s come to our attention that shortly after you began at the bureau… you and your partner that were working the case at that time became compromised.”
“Compromised? What do you mean?”
Rob handed Gus his file & watched as he opened it and began reading
“Do you remember now?” Rob wondered. “Yeah, we were in the middle of the case when we were physically exposed to something.”
“Right, you weren’t exposed for long---.”
“But I feel fine.” Gus stated.
“—however, you were exposed long enough to have physical effects from it.”
“I feel fine.” He repeated.
“I’m just suggesting you get checked out by a doctor Gus, because this can sometime cause all types of physical effects or problems, sterility, & or heart problems.
Gus paused when he heard what this could cause, “Wow.”
“Yeah, just get checked Gus that’s all I’m saying.” Rob replied as he stood up; shaking hands he left. As Gus got in the car he breathed a sigh of relief, “Well, I’m in the clear Coop’s pregnant so no problems there.
But not being sure about possible long term problems Gus dialed & scheduled an appointment with his doctor.

Chapter 4
“Honey, I’m back.” Gus said closing the front door seeing the girls where he left them an hour and a half earlier. Smiling at him, Harley stood then went to him.
“You okay?”
“I will be, just let me hold you for a minute.” He asked.
Wrapping her arms around his waist she held on as he closed his eyes and pulled her closer. Standing still for a few minutes they both enjoyed taking their quiet moments. Breaking the hold after a bit Harley lay both hands on each side of his face & just stared into his eyes. She knew her husband well.
“Something is wrong. I can see it,” she replied noticing the crinkle on his forehead & that his eyes had dulled a bit, a sure sign for her that he had something on his mind.
“Shhhh,” he placed a finger lengthwise over her lips, “We’ll talk about it later… right now I want to have dinner with my wife, my sons & step-daughter & think of the little one.” Once his jacket was off he motioned to Susan who came over & he dropped an arm over her shoulder & together they walked to the kitchen where the boys were coloring at the kitchen table.
After dinner, everyone was in the family room; Harley was playing with the boys while Susan & Gus played Rummy at the coffee table.
“Rummy.” Susan said after 20 minutes. Gus looked at her bewildered, “that is the third hand you’ve won & we’ve only played 3 rounds… where’d you learn to play like that?”
Harley had to hide a smile, when Gus looked over at her, “Did you see that.”
Susan had to hide a smile as well when he looked between the ladies. “Wait, did you teach Susan to play like this?” he asked his wife. When she smiled he threw up his hands, “I should have known.” “I taught her how to play after she came to Springfield to find me.” Harley replied laughing.
Seeing her eyes, Gus stood up, he knew she was tired, “Okay boys… its bath time; head up to the bathroom so I can help you with your baths.” After the boys kissed Susan & Harley they looked at their step-dad, he motioned with his hands, “Go, Go, Go… I’ll time you.” He said as the boys took off upstairs.
“Are you sure?” Harley asked looking up at him, “Yeah, go on & get comfortable, I’ll be in after the boys are down.”
Standing, she went to her daughter & hugged her good night then turned to him, “I love you.” She said quietly. “And I love you.” He stated as he kissed her then went upstairs.
An hour later, Gus walked into their bedroom in only his jeans, “Sweetie the boys are out for the night & I checked on Susan & she’s asleep.
“Good, now can you tell me what you found out today?” she asked. He sighed heavily as he stared at her. As he began to change he told her, “This afternoon after I got that strange email from my buddy at the bureau he suggested I access my FBI file before I call him so I pulled my numbers--.”
“You know your file number?” Harley interrupted as he climbed in bed with her. “Sweetheart, a file is kept on all FBI agents, so we each know our numbers in case we should ever need too.” He remarked then continued, “Anyway, when I tried to access the file, I was told that my file had been sealed. I didn’t think that was right so I tried again & again I was told it was sealed. So, I called him & asked why it’d been sealed. He wanted me to meet him at Towers which is why I left here. When I got to Towers my buddy was there & had my file with him.
Apparently it has come to someone’s attention there that during one of the operations that had been in place for a case that my partner & I got not long after I joined the bureau, they discovered that my partner & I were exposed to something & he advised that I get checked out.”
“But you’re fine.” Harley said watching him.
“That’s what I told Rob, it didn’t matter he said I should get checked anyway because exposure sometimes can cause all types of physical effects or problems, sterility, & or heart problems.”
“Wow, well you’re clear with the physical & the baby proves no sterility problems. But let me ask, did you remember the case when Rob mentioned it & did he say how & why you & your partner might have been exposed?” she wondered
“I did remember bits & pieces of the case but not enough & I’ve been thinking & no Rob didn’t disclose what we could’ve been exposed too or why. But I still didn’t like what Rob told me so on the way home I called Dr. Williams & made an appointment.” He said as he touched her tummy.
“Could he fit you in?”
Gus nodded, “Yeah, said it was no problem so I have an appointment at 10:30 a.m. tomorrow.”
“Good, I’m going with you.” Harley stated.
“Wouldn’t have it any other way.” He whispered as she slid down in the bed. Getting comfortable Harley lay on her side as Gus began to slowly massage starting at her neck. Dropping light kisses he worked his way down until he heard her gasps; moving back up her body he kissed her long & deep as he made them one. Seeing her face he placed one hand on her cheek & she did the same. As their breath was getting back to normal Harley laid her cheek on his shoulder & he lightly wrapped his arms around her.
“I love you baby,” He whispered. He could feel her smile against his shoulder as she fell asleep. Brushing his hand over her hair, he kissed her temple, “I’ll be fine.” He said softly as he drifted off.

Chapter 5
I’ll be bringing back a particular place in this chapter. For those of you that have read my previous Fan fiction; you may recognize it.

Gus headed to the car the next morning while Harley gave Susan last minute instructions for watching the boys. Once she closed the car door she glanced over; and saw he was staring at her & the wrist of his left hand draped over the steering wheel she reached over & laid her hand over his right that was resting on his thigh. He turned his right hand over & threaded his fingers through Harley’s. Not saying a word he pulled her hand to his lips & kissed it before backing out of the drive way.
Dr. Williams Office…
After helping Harley to her seat, Gus went to the counter & signed in then came back to sit beside her.
“Was Sus okay about watching the boys?” he wondered.
She smiled hearing the nickname, “Yep she said she’d watch the boys as long as we needed her too.”
“Good… Good.” He replied trying to hide his nervousness. Leaning against his arm she lightly rubbed up & down his arm; she knew he was nervous.
“Aitoro.” The nurse called opening the door. When he stood Harley stood with him, “Want me to go back with you?”
He shook his head no as she kissed him, “I’ll be right here, I love you.”
Kissing her back, he smiled, “I love you too sweetheart.” He replied as he followed behind the nurse.
Once he was changed into the hospital gown he hopped on the table; a minute later the nurse came in to talk with him then check his temp & blood pressure. After that he was left alone to wait for Dr. Williams.
Five minutes went by when he began to think of Harley & the baby. “Little one, its daddy, I know your safe with mommy but it makes me happy to think about you. To know that in several months you’ll be here & daddy can hold you. But little one daddy’s gotta say he’s scared… You see I’m getting a physical and I’m afraid of what--.” He stopped when he heard the doctor right outside the door.
Taking a deep breath he let it out just as Dr. Williams opened the door.
“Hey Gus.” The doctor said as they shook hands. Closing the door, he sat down, “So, tell me what’s going on?”
“Well a buddy of mine I worked with from the FBI contacted me to let me know that years ago during one of the operations I was a part of... my partner & I were compromised--.”
“Compromised how?” the doctor wondered.
“I’m not exactly sure… he mentioned exposure to something but didn’t say what. All he talked about were the side effects from being exposed.”
“What were the side effects?”
Gus told him and the doctor raised his eyes a bit, “I feel fine, but I didn’t like the sound of the side effects which is why I came in.” he finished.
“Okay Gus, we’ll get you checked out, lets start the blood work then we’ll do the physical.” He replied calling a lab tech in the room. After getting the blood the lab tech left with which tests to run then Dr. Williams began the physical.
“So, how’s Harley?”
He saw Gus smile then, “she’s great, we’re expecting, she found out a few weeks ago. And my step-daughter’s here so we are good.”
“Congratulations on the baby I bet you guys are thrilled.”
Gus nodded, “We are, and I’m going to enjoy getting to know my stepdaughter.”
“Take a deep breath for me Gus.”
Neither Gus nor the doctor said anything for a while as they continued with the physical. The doctor was going to be through for Gus’s sake.
Dr. Williams sat back on the stool, “Alright, Gus you know what comes next he remarked as he leaned over and picked up two specimen cups. As he handed one to Gus he rolled his eyes, “Ah the pee cup.”
“And Gus, since there is the side effect of this, we’ll check this as well.” He replied passing him the second cup.
“Oh you’re kidding Doc.” Gus replied.
“Afraid not Gus, just leave them both in the bathroom when you’re done & a nurse will come get them & take them to the lab, I’ve made sure there is a rush on all lab work. Come back in here & get dressed when your done & I’ll be with as quickly as possible.” The doctor said as he opened the door & followed Gus out in the hall.
In the waiting room, Harley sat working fill –in puzzles while she waited. Seeing doctor Williams she called to him; turning he smiled & walked over, “Is Gus okay?” she wondered. “Yeah, he asked for a complete physical work up so we’re still running a few tests, after I get the results I’ll talk to him about them. I’m sorry but I need to check on a patient while Gus finishes & I get the lab work.”
“I understand… Thank you.” She said as he turned away. Stopping he turned back, “I hear congratulations are in order.” He stated. She smiled sitting back down as he left her.
Forty-five minutes later, Dr. Williams opened the exam room door, “Gus, come too my office.” He asked as he walked ahead. Gus followed right behind and closed the office door while the doctor sat on the corner of his desk with a file on his leg.
“Doc, I really don’t like that look on your face.” Gus said sitting down.
“First let me say, that your actual physical was in the clear, your okay. Now, we did find abnormalities with one test we ran.”
“Which test Doc?” Gus asked quietly.
“Sterility.” Was all he said?
“Apparently this was how you were compromised…whatever it was caused a lot of abnormalities with the sperm motility along with other aspects.”
Gus looked at his friend and doctor, “Which means what?”
“It means Gus that you may never father children.”
“But Harley’s pregnant now.” Gus said trying to breathe, he felt like he’d just been punched in the gut with a sledgehammer.
“I know she is, Gus, all I can say is you just got lucky with this baby.”
“Are you sure there isn’t a mistake?” he asked.
The doctor shook his head, “No, not with the numbers I’m looking at here.” He replied motioning to the file he held.
“Can I go?” he asked standing. He knew what the doctor wasn’t saying, ‘That this baby would be his only baby.’ And that hurt.
“If you need anything Gus, let me know.” Doctor Williams said walking him out.
“Reaching the waiting room he went straight to Harley & pulled her to her feet.
“You ready honey?” she asked?
He nodded then touched her tummy lightly as they walked out & got in the car.
“What’d Doctor Williams say?”
“Let’s go to the park.” He said.

Park…
Walking hand in hand they headed toward the best place to watch the sunset. Helping her down Gus sat leaning with his back against a tree. He was in shock completely as he tried to process what he’d just been told. Harley watched as his eyes glazed over first with what she guessed could be shock since he kept trying to breathe deep then fill with unshed tears.
“Baby, I’m right here whenever you can tell me.” She said quietly.
He couldn’t quite say the words yet but he knew he had to tell her, “Sweetie, you know how swim team divers strive to reach the finish line?”
“What?” Harley asked confused.
“You know how swim team divers strive to reach the finish line? They try but they drown before they reach the goal…”
“The swimmers drown before reaching the finish line.” Gus repeated.
Comprehension dawned at what he was telling her and tears filled her own eyes as she turned to face him, “Are you sure?”
“Yeah pretty positive.” Gus answered.
“But I’m pregnant.”
She saw a tear slip from his eye and slowly roll down as he said, “We just got lucky with this baby, Harley.”
Taking his hand, she held tight, “Start from the beginning for me honey, what’d the lab work say.” Harley remarked
He took a deep breath, “My actual physical came away clean, nothing is wrong with me, however, when they ran a sterility test Dr. Williams found a lot of abnormalities. When I was compromised in the FBI whatever I was compromised with left me unable to father children.” He stated unable to still say the word. At this point he didn’t try to stop the tears this time as his wife sat beside him, her heart breaking for what Gus must be feeling.
He stood & walked several feet away from her. With his back to her he said, “I’ve failed you.”
Before she could reply he turned & begun having problems breathing… she could see he was hyperventilating. His eyes flew to hers as she stood going to him. Placing her hand over his heart, she replied, “Breathe sweetie, take a slow deep breath. When he did he reached for her hand. “Keep breathing like that Aitoro. You’ll be fine, I’m right here. Listen to me, you did not fail me, you have not failed me. You have 2 stepsons that adore you, a step daughter that wants to know you & we have this little one together that will know how much mommy & daddy want him/her.
When he could breathe again he hugged her tightly as he buried his face on her shoulder. She felt as he began to shake with the force of his shock & tears. Placing her hand on the nape of his neck she just held him
“I love you honey. The fact that this has happened hasn’t made me love you any less, it never could.” She said as they stood there.
Once his sobs died down he didn’t take his chin from her shoulder but said, “Harley I need to remember, somehow I’m going to find out how & why I was compromised.”

Chapter 6
Hey Everyone, I’ve done this chapter a bit differently; adding an event that happened with Early GusH in with the recent story. I promise the story will be better. Let me know what you think. – GG

“I need to remember, somehow I’m going to find out how & why I was compromised Harley.” He repeated quietly looking into her eyes.
“I know you do Gus, and I’ll be right here every step of the way.” She replied.
He pulled her down slowly so that she sat in his lap. “I’m sorry baby.” Since they were forehead to forehead she tunneled her fingers through his jet black hair.
Leaning his head back to rest against a tree Harley let her fingers trail down his face and with the backs of her fingers caressed his throat.
“Why did we have to fall in love?” he asked tiredly closing his eyes.
She didn’t take offense to his question; she could still hear the sadness along with how tired he was. Laying her head gently on his shoulder she answered him. “If you had ask me that same question 6 years ago when we met, I would have said we wouldn’t have… never in a million years.”
He opened his eyes at her answer; trying to remember what he’d said, when he did his eyes got big, “Ah honey I didn’t--.”
“--Will you stop; you don’t need to apologize to me sweetie. We’ve been through a lot together in the last 6 years honey; we’ll deal with this too.”
“I fell in love with you because I need you more than I need to breathe.” He replied as he breathed in her scent & let himself steady. She brushed her fingers thru his hair as they sat in silence.
“I never told you--.”
“Told me what?” he asked.
“Do you remember when I was pregnant with Jude?”
He grinned, “Yep, I never thought I’d fall for a pregnant lady. Why?”
“Because at one point, I dreamed he was yours.” She answered.
He stopped, “What…”
“I dreamed I’d already had him & we were going into Company to meet with daddy & when I walked in I said something about here’s daddy & then smiling I looked up & when I did you turned around.”
“We still weren’t sure about each other.” Gus remarked.
“No, we weren’t & I wanted to be away from you but my subconscious apparently already knew what I was trying to fight. Does knowing any of this help?” she asked.
“A little but it still hurts knowing that this baby--.” He laid a hand over her tummy protectively. “—will be the only baby we ever have together—.”
“Maybe not honey, we could get lucky again.” She interrupted.
“I don’t think so Harley.” He commented.
“If not sweetheart, we will have three children already.”
He nodded, “I hope baby Aitoro will love me.” She placed her hand over his heart, “He/she will love you Gus, no question… let’s go home baby.” She said.
Carefully, he helped her stand then stood up and they headed to the car.
In the driveway, Gus let out a heavy sigh as he turned off the motor. Reaching over Harley rubbed his back slowly. Getting out they went into the house.
“Hey Mom, Gus.” Susan said as she walked in the family room.
Harley caressed his cheek as he looked at her, “Honey, I want you to go upstairs & sleep for a while, you are so tired.” He nodded, you going to be okay if I do?” She smiled, “I’ll be fine.”
“Things go okay at the doctor?” Susan asked. Before either could answer, they heard “Gus! Gus!” coming from Jude as he ran in the room. Leaning down Gus caught Jude as he reached him. Lifting him up he hugged the boy tight as both he & Harley shared a look.
“He is mine.” Gus mouthed to her as he continued to hug the little boy. She nodded.
Susan spoke up then, “Gus he’s been fighting a nap until you got home.”
“Oh, really? You wouldn’t sleep huh?” he asked Jude. Jude shook his head.
“How about if you come up & take a nap with me? I’m going up in a minute to sleep for a while. How bout that?” Gus wondered. Jude nodded.
Pulling Harley close, Gus hugged her as he spoke quietly, “I’ll be back down in a little while… come get me if you need too.”
Kissing him lightly, “You rest now honey, just shut down; I’ll check on you in a bit. I Love you.”
“I love you too.” He whispered then kissed her, “Alright buddy, let’s go.” He replied bouncing the boy as they headed upstairs.
Susan followed her mom to the kitchen. “Hey mom, everything okay?”
She turned, “It will be sweetie, Gus’s just trying to deal with news he heard; he’ll be okay.”
“Can I do anything?”
“Just get to know him Susan.” Harley replied. “I will; I want to… he makes you happy. I can see how much he loves you.”
Both ladies sat at the kitchen table as Harley began telling her daughter about Gus. A little while later she looked at the clock, “I’ll be right back Susan I’m going to check on Gus & the boys.”
Once at the bottom of the stairs she slipped out of her shoes then headed up. At the boys room she opened the door & saw that Zach was still napping so closing the door a bit she went to their room. Quietly going in she smiled, Jude was snuggled close to Gus sound asleep. Stopping by his side of the bed she gently pulled the covers up of her husband & son.
Watching him a minute she saw the worry line on his forehead. Carefully she began rubbing the line away. “I love you sweetheart.” She murmured kissing his cheek. Caressing his face lightly she saw him relax then she left the room with their door cracked incase he needed her.

Chapter 7
In this story, I have more than 1 story going but they will all tie together by the end I promise. In this chapter I have moved up time just a bit, Harley is now showing at 3 months & Susan has decided to stay in order to get to know Gus as well as be with her family.
Hope you enjoy – GG
Hearing the door open, Susan headed to the family room. “How was the doctor’s appointment mom?”
“It was good honey.” She replied as Gus helped her sit down. “I’m fine, so far no problems to be seen, the baby’s fine.” Susan sat beside her as he went to the kitchen. “Here babe.” Coming back Gus passed her the glass of water as he lightly kissed her. Then he hung his jacket in the closet.
“We heard your brother or sister’s heart beat Susan.” Gus stated as he sat down by Harley so she could lean on him.
“What’d it sound like?”
“It was so strong but so fast… I asked Dr. Sedgwick about it being fast and she said that was normal. Before anything could be said they all heard a series of beeps.
“That’s me.” Gus remarked pulling out his beeper. Stopping he looked at the screen:
I need you to check your email!! – R.J.
He knew who R. J. was, “Ladies, if you’ll excuse me I need to check on something for work.” He stood & headed upstairs.
Booting up the computer he logged into his email:
To: Agent Aitoro
From: Rob Jenkins
Subject: Hey Buddy
Gus, I did some checking on the event I told you I would check, I have sent you some info on the event that I hope helps. I’ll try to send you more when I can but I think you’ll have to do the rest. I’ll talk to you soon.
Let me know if I can do anything else.

He sat back & studied the message, “So, it’s up to me now huh Rob. I have to remember what happened. I’ve got to remember, not only for me but for my family.” He stated. Leaning over he saved the email then shutting down he headed back down to the family room.
“Done so soon honey?” Harley asked. “Yes and no.” he stood behind the couch. “Susan did you get the mail in today?” When she nodded he went to the kitchen table & began sorting through it. Coming across a manila envelope he looked at the Sender information
R. Jenkins
FBI Headquarters
Quantico, Va.
Pulling it from the stack he placed it on the mantle; he’d look at it later when Harley & the kids were asleep. “You okay sweetie?” He looked over at his wife, “yeah, just something from Mr. Jenkins for me but I’ll look at it later. Her eyes widened at the name; he knew she would know the name & who he was.
When the phone rang Harley reached to answer it. “Hello? Oh hi daddy… what’s going on?” she asked as both Susan & Gus stood by listening. Hearing the boys come in from the backyard Gus went to them.
“Hey boys.” He replied as they hugged him. “Mamma?” Zach wondered looking toward her. “You can go to her in a minute when she gets off the phone with grandpa.” Zach nodded and the boys waited.
Hanging up, she looked at her family as she motioned the boys over. “That was Grandpa… he’d like company for dinner & wanted to know if we’d come eat with him & Coop.” She looked up at Gus to see what he thought. Nodding he smiled as they all began get their coats. Grabbing the keys from the hall table Gus shut the door & locked it as everyone headed to the car.
Company…
“Grandpa! Grandpa!” The boys shouted as they ran into Company. Both Gus & Harley smiled, “Honey can we stay here for a second?”
He wondered. “I’ll go look after the rug rats until you come in.” Susan said laughing.
Once inside, Susan made sure the boys were fine then went to the window.
“Honey, are you okay?” Harley asked even as he placed her arms around his neck. “Yeah, I just really wanted to kiss you & didn’t want an audience.” He remarked. Moving closer she watched him as he watched her.
Inside, Buzz came to stand behind his granddaughter, “What are you doing over her sweetie?” he wondered. “Watching them” Buzz finally looked up & saw Harley & Gus. “Why Sus?”
“Just look at him Grandpa, you can see by the way he looks at mom; by the way he holds her… how much she means to him. They continued to watch & could tell they were talking.
Gus gently took her face in his hands, “Do you have any idea how much I love you?” he asked softly. She smiled slightly then ran the tip of her finger lightly down what was in her mind a gorgeous nose. “It maybe the baby vibe honey but tell me?” she responded.
“Why don’t I show you?”
Very gently Gus laid his lips on hers & neither moved; his heart tripped over itself as it filled with love as he stood there mouth to mouth with his love, his soul mate. After a minute the kiss changed as he hugged her close. Once the kiss was broken he continued to hug her even as her arms tightened.
“I love you.” He said. “And I love you; lets stay out here another minute.” He nodded as he held her.
Buzz saw as tears came to Susan’s eyes as she watched her mom. “He loves her very much; he’d be lost without her. When I first met Gus I couldn’t stand him & I didn’t think he was any good for your mom.”
“Why?”
“I think that’s Gus’s place to share his story with you… but for now just know he loves Harley. Come on lets get dinner, they’ll be in here in a minute.” Buzz said leading her away from the window.
“Well there they are,” Buzz remarked as Harley & Gus walked in hand in hand. “—took you long enough.”
They smiled, “The bench outside was calling our name.” his son-in-law replied. Buzz smiled. “Dinner’s done, come sit.”
As they walked to a table Coop walked up stopping his sister. “You okay?” he asked. “Yeah, we’re good.” She said touching her tummy. Smiling he hugged her then helped her sit next to Gus.
After a nice family meal & spending time together; they made there excuses; gathered up the boys and headed home.
Getting home, they took the boys upstairs & put them to bed since both had fallen asleep on the way home. Once they got their clothes changed Susan came to tell them good night. After she left Harley, stopped Gus, “Alright where were you at dinner. You spaced out at one point.”
He shrugged, “I was thinking about what Rob had emailed me earlier.” “We’ll come to bed sweetheart, you can have a better thought about it tomorrow.” She stated.
“I can’t honey, not until I look at what he sent. But I want you to go on to sleep, I’ll be up soon.”
“You sure.”
“Yes, here let me help you to bed.” He pulled the covers back; waited while she got comfortable then covered her up. She took his hand so he leaned over. “I want you to sleep Coop— you & the baby need to rest.” She nodded, “—I’ll be up soon.” He said then kissed her. “I love you.” He smiled as she mumbled something he could see she was already drifting.
Turning out the light he headed to the family room. Going to check & make sure Susan’s door was closed he came back. Getting the envelope from the mantle he sat down on the couch and opened it placing the papers on the coffee table.
Now he had to try & remember long forgotten details of a case that was years ago.

Chapter 8
For this particular chapter anything that’s italicized is part of Gus’s memory.

“How am I supposed to remember that, something that at the time went as smoothly as a regular operation goes?” He mumbled to himself. He was trying to make sense of what Rob sent him.
Beginning at the first of the paperwork again he tried to remember the background information he was given on that particular case. Looking at the Supervisor’s name he pictured the man. Seeing that man Gus read though the sketchy details in the report again.
Agent Thompson barreled into their office. “Agents’ Aitoro & MacIntyre we just caught a new case & you two are on it.”
“What is it sir?” Gus had asked. “It will require you two to go undercover in different areas of the same crime family operation…”
“Gus?” Hearing his name he snapped out of it. Looking around he saw Susan standing there. “Hey Sus what are you doing up?” he wondered.
“I couldn’t sleep, my brain won’t shut down.”
“Is there any reason why?” When she nodded he patted the couch, “Wanna talk about it?”
As she sat down he put the papers aside so he could give Susan his full attention then looked at the clock it was 1:00 a.m.
“I was thinking of you & mom.” She stated.
“Us?”
She nodded, “I saw you both outside at Grandpa’s & in all honesty it brought me to tears.”
He watched her but didn’t say anything as she continued, “Why her?”
He turned to sit sideways on the couch, “why your mom? She saw through the angry walls I’d built around myself & she seemed to understand. And even though we fought a lot when we first met she called me out one day at the station. I figured when I looked at her that day all I’d see was anger at me. But what I saw Susan, was frustration for the man she could see behind the walls I’d built. When she reached out to me; I saw the love she wanted to give & my protective walls came down.”
“When we finally began to get to know each other I began to be able to see myself with her. I liked knowing she was the one I could trust with my past, as well as with anything else.”
“If you can & don’t mind saying, why were you angry?” She could see as she watched him that he seemed to be somewhere else. He went back in time as he told Susan of there first meeting…
“When I first met her, the FBI had sent me to follow up on the Santos Crime family operation that was here. At that time I was out for revenge against Danny & I wanted to take him down any way I could. At his house my partner & I met Frank, your mom & their partner. She had told me this case was theirs but then I told them that it now belonged to the FBI. Harley asked who we were & at that time I was with the Organized Crime Division. Because I was acting on orders of my supervisor I had to stay in Springfield & work with their police to finish the Santos’. In doing so I became Harley’s boss for a short while. It was during this time that your mom found out that Danny Santos father killed mine in an authorized mob hit.”
“Stop Gus.” Susan asked. Hearing her voice tremble snapped him out of the past. Looking up he tried to smile. “I didn’t mean to upset you.”
“You didn’t sweetie, I think of my dad constantly. He’s a part of me; he was a great cop Susan. That is part of the reason I wanted to be a cop because I wanted him to be proud of me. At the time what I was doing was what I thought was right. At the station that day your mom had called me out I had Danny Santos brought in to have him arrested on anything that would stick. Something Danny had said made me realize I had to give up the vendetta against his family so I let him go. Your mom came in and asked why I let him go… as I said when she reached out to me; I saw the love she wanted to give & I broke down. That’s when I realized it was her I needed.”
“You love mom the way she deserves to be.” Susan replied.
“I’m trying Susan.” Gus said smiling.
“You’re tired Sus, go back to bed… we’ll talk more tomorrow I promise.”
She leaned over & hugged him; surprising him. “Goodnight.”
He watched as she went back to her room. Turning back to his papers he read through them again then looked at the clock; it was 2:30 a.m.
“I can’t I’ll look again tomorrow.” He said tiredly to himself. Placing the papers back on the mantle; he turned off the light & headed to the bedroom.
Reaching their room he went in quietly, climbing in bed he turned to face Harley. As he was pulling the covers up he heard “Honey?”
“It’s me Coop, I didn’t mean to wake you, go back to sleep.” He responded.
“Are you just coming to bed?”
“Yeah.” Pulling her close she lay her head on his shoulder, making sure they were both covered & warm he drifted off… as he did he mumbled “Rossetti”

Chapter 9

Watching Harley walk away to go get them lunch, Gus smiled, as he turned toward his desk. He had been occupied with the mound of paper work for several minutes when he happened to look up as a woman slowly came in carrying a child as well as a couple of suit cases. She went to the sergeant’s desk. As he looked on he became angry… this woman had been beaten pretty badly.
“Gus, can you help here?” the sergeant asked. Nodding he slowly walked toward her so he wouldn’t scare her. She looked at him, “Help me?” “Ma’am I’m Detective Aitoro, come sit down & you can tell me what’s going on.”
Looking back to the sergeant he said quietly, “Find Chief Cooper.” Then he took a step toward her; when he did she shrank back from his hand as he started to lead her toward his chair. Gus let his hand drop, “You’ll be alright we promise.” He stated as he pointed to his chair.
Once she was seated he sat on the corner of his desk facing her, “Can you tell me your name?” She sat watching him trying to see if she could trust him. “It was during this time the sergeant quietly
pulled him aside, “Chief Cooper is on his way back, he’ll be here in about 5 minutes. Nodding Gus took his place on the desk again. Finally, after several minutes of studying the detective & seeing no malice in his eyes she mumbled, “Karen.”
“Karen, I’m Gus & I need you to answer questions for me okay? We’ll go slowly? & then we’ll clean up those cuts & scratches.” She nodded.
“Can you tell me who did this to you?”
“My husband, I finally had enough & I ran with Mark while he is gone to his buddies.” She said trying not to cry. Seeing her tears he grabbed a tissue & passed it to her. While she was trying to compose herself he saw Frank walking toward him. Motioning for him to slow down Frank did & came to stand beside him. “Gus?” Frank asked. Hearing another voice made Karen jump.
Gus smiled, “This is the Chief Karen.” Frank held his hand out, “Ma’am we’ll help you.” At this point the little boy began to cry, she bounced him in her lap. “He’s scared with so many strange faces.”
They nodded, “Let me see if I have something he can play with.” He rummaged in one of the drawers of the desk until he came up holding a toy car. “Here ya go buddy.” He said holding the car until Mark held it in his chubby fist. Karen looked at Gus a little perplexed. “I have two sons & I keep a few things here.” He said as a way of explanation.
Harley came up to him and sat the food bag down, “Hey sweetie, glad you’re here.” Frank took over, “We’ll help you. But right now we need to take some pictures for our report okay then we’ll get the cuts & scratches taken care of?” She nodded. Frank went to get the camera then came back, “Will you let me or Gus hold your son long enough for Harley to get pictures?” the Chief wondered. Karen looked at Gus, “We’ll you take him?”
“Sure.” He replied carefully taking the baby from her. “Karen you can come with me, will go in the chief’s office.” Harley stated. Staring at her son wide eyed she shook her head. Seeing her worry Gus held Mark closer, “I won’t let him go, we’ll be right here.” He sat down in the chair that Karen left.
She nodded handing Gus a bottle, “Now?” he wondered. “Yes.” She then walked away with Harley. As the men watched the door close Gus uncapped the bottle & begin feeding Mark as Frank watched. Several minutes passed before the door opened & they came back to the desk. “Chief, the camera is on your desk, she wanted to come back out here where she could see Mark; I'll go get the first aid supplies & be back.” Harley said smiling at Karen even as Gus stood still holding the baby so his mom could sit down.
“Do you think we can ask you some more questions while Detective Cooper-Aitoro patches you up?” The chief asked. Karen’s head shot up. “She’s my wife.” Gus replied softly so he wouldn’t wake the baby. She nodded again as Harley came & knelt beside her.
“Karen, do you want to press charges against your husband?” “Yes, but I don’t know where to go that we’ll be safe.”
“We’ll help you find a shelter.” Harley said as she happened to look over at her husband & saw him watching the baby. At the same time the mother saw it too. “Congratulations Detective.” She said. Hearing her Gus looked up, “Thank you.” But he was a little confused.
“I’m not that little anymore honey.” Harley replied laughing as she gently wiped the blood from the cuts on Karen’s cheek.
Frank looked over at the woman; let me go process the papers for you to sign okay? Where's your husband now, I’ll have officers pick him up.” he asked. Getting a response from her he walked away.
After getting Karen cleaned up Harley stood & Gus passed Mark back to his mom. It’ll be a little while so rest okay, you’re safe here. Harley & I will call shelters & check them out.” She stood & moved to the chairs by the wall so that detective Aitoro could have his desk back.
Gus & Harley worked at each others desks going back & forth as they called shelters. A little later Frank called Gus over where he was standing out of ear shot of Karen, “The two officers I sent to pick up her husband just radioed in; they got him. I told them to hold him down in lock up away from here; I don’t want him brought up here to be questioned until she’s safely at a shelter.” Gus nodded then went back to Harley.
“I found one Gus, The Safe Haven Shelter has got room for them, and I talked with the owner. The owner assures me that the shelter is for battered women or children she said they have 12 ladies there now.” Harley said.
“Great honey.”
Frank walked back in, “Karen here are the papers, all you need to do is sign them.” She came over as he laid the papers on a desk.
“Are you okay with this?” Frank asked gently. “I thought he loved me.” She said through tears. “He’ll be charged once the papers are signed.”
Taking a pen she scrawled her name to the papers allowing the police to deal with her husband.
Harley came to her, “We found a shelter that has room & can take you now, if you’re ready.” She nodded.
Harley looked at her husband, “I’ll take her, having a man there might scare the others.” He nodded. He saw Karen trying to pry the toy truck from her son, going to her he smiled. “He can have it Karen.”
“Oh I couldn’t.”
“You didn’t, it’s my gift to him.” Gus remarked.
She turned, “Thank you for being so nice to me & to Mark.” She hugged him. Loosely hugging her, his words moved her hair a bit as he replied, “Stay healthy & safe Karen.”
As they left & Frank went to lock up to get the husband, Gus sat to work on the paperwork that he’d been doing before Karen walked in. He tried for a full 20 minutes before he gave up; he wasn’t able to concentrate. Gus finally sat back & stares off into space; there are times he doesn't think of his sterility but then there are days like today where it snuck up on him then slammed into him with full force… he knew it had hit him as he held Mark & then watched Harley, “I Can’t Father Children…I Can’t Father Children!” he thought angrily. That’s all he can think of as he sits in silence & frustrated with himself... now all he can see are the turn of events that the universe has left him with.
At that he let himself dream of what could have been…
He walks through the door after a long day at work. Zach & Jude come running in, “Gus… Gus your home! They say as he drops his keys on the table. “Hey Guys!” he replies hugging them close. “Where’s everyone else?”
“Susan & Laurie are outside.” Jude replied as he answered & Gus smiled, “What about Momma?”
“She’s upstairs with the baby.” Zach answered. “Okay can you go tell her I’m home & I’ll be up in a minute, I’m gonna see Susan & Laurie.” As they started to head up he turned & called, “Don’t wake your brother!” as he reached the back door then stepped outside.
“Daddy!!! Daddy!!!” Laurie yelled as she jumped up & ran to him. Reaching down he lifted her when she reached him, “Hi pixie.” He said to his 5 yr old; giving her light kisses all over her face making her laugh. When Susan reached him he looked over, “Hi Sweetie.” He said kissing her check. After she hugged him back he replied “How was your day girls'?”
He listened as they told him then standing Laurie on her feet again he went inside as Susan raced Laurie to the swing.
Jogging up the stairs he went to the nursery where he knew Harley would be. Seeing her sitting in the rocker he walked in & knelt beside her.
“Hey baby.” He said as he stretched up to kiss her. “How was work?” she wondered. “It was okay, but it will be better once you are back from maternity leave, I miss seeing my partner.” He said with a smile.
“I’ll be back there soon.”
“How are you feeling?” he questioned as he watched his son sleep. “I’m okay just a little tired.” Gus gently stroked the baby’s cheek, “Well I’m here now so I’ll help out with whatever you need as well as Mat--.”
“Gus?” hearing his name he was startled from his dream. Looking over he saw Lizzie standing there. Seeing her he smiled, “Hi sweetheart. Are you okay?”
She smiled, “Yeah I’m fine. I know you don’t like to be around Granddad but I wanted you to meet Sarah.” Standing Gus walked around to sit on the side of the desk by his niece. Lizzie carefully placed Sarah in his arms.
“Lizzie she’s beautiful. Hi Sarah I’m Uncle Gus.” He said softly as he watched her sleep.
Harley walked in, “Honey, Karen is safe.” Seeing Lizzie she stopped.
“Hey Lizzie.”
“Hi Harley, I wanted Gus to meet Sarah.” Harley walked to where she could see the baby. Lizzie smiled when she saw Harley’s expanding stomach. “When are you due?”
Harley grinned, “July.”
“Can I talk to you Gus?”
He nodded to his niece, “I’ll be in the interrogation room writing the report Gus.” Harley stated as she left them alone.
“I want her to know you Gus.” Lizzie replied nodding toward Sarah. He reached for his niece’s hand… “I would be honored. But Alan may not be okay with it.”
“That’s granddad’s problem.”
“Do you remember when you rescued me?” Lizzie asked. Gus watched her as he nodded. “As I remember I told you that you’d be a great mom to your daughter.”
“You did & that shocked me because you said you had faith in me.”
“I still do.”
Sarah started to whimper so Gus passed her to Lizzie, “I better get her home, can I bring her by to visit at times?” she wondered.
“Absolutely.” Harley answered coming back over.
He hugged her, “If you need me, give me a call sweetie.” She nodded the he kissed Sarah lightly.
After she left, Gus reached for his wife & hugged her tight, “Babe, are you alright? When I first came in you were looking at Sarah and you seemed a million miles away.”
“Yeah I was, I was thinking what a day this had been, first Karen & her son then Sarah plus something I was thinking about earlier. It all just got me down. You know some days I don’t think about it then…” he let his sentence drop.
“Oh Gus.” She said knowing seeing 2 babies hurt him. “Come on Coop, your tired & need to get off your feet. Let’s go home so I can take care of my beautiful wife.”

Chapter 10
This chapter is the 1st of two that are strictly GusH & their TLC. Hope you enjoy! – GG

Gus slipped his arm around Harley as they walked outside. Helping her into the car he jogged around to the driver’s side. Once inside he took her hand, “Relax sweetheart.” As he drove he kept his hand in hers.
Reaching the house he pulled into the driveway.
Looking over he caressed her cheek. “Are you okay Coop?” he asked as he remembered how tired she looked at the station.
Yeah, just tired.” She replied.
Together they walked into the house, when the boys saw them they jumped up & went to them. After Gus hugged them he guided her to the couch & helped her down. Before anyone could say anything Buzz came from the kitchen.
“Hey guys, I wanted to let you know that I have dinner started for everyone & that after everyone eats, if no one objects I’ll take Susan & the boys with me for the night. Both of you need a night to just spend time together.” He said as he walked over and stopped; facing his daughter.
“How ya doing baby?”
“Tired; thanks daddy for doing this for us.” She said. “No, problem honey.” She closed her eyes. Buzz shot his son-in-law a look then tilted his head. Gus nodded, leaning in to softly kiss Harley’s cheek, but she turned away. “Babe, I need to go make a phone call while your dad finishes in the kitchen.” She nodded. “Boys, can you do me a favor?”
“Sure.” The boys said in unison. “Can you take care of mommy until I get back?” They stood up & climbed on the couch with Harley as both men headed to the kitchen.
Reaching the kitchen Buzz pulled Gus to the sink out of earshot of his daughter. “Is she okay Gus?”
“She had a long day, when I tried to get her to come home at lunch she wouldn’t, so when I saw how tired she was I brought her home.” Buzz nodded, “after everyone eats we’ll get out of here.”
“I need to go make that call while you finish up.” He replied then headed out to the backyard as he pulled his cell from his pocket.
Dialing he turned as he waited for the other person. “Hey Frank, it’s me… take me off duty for tonight; I’m not coming back in. See if Mallet will cover for me. Harley needs me more tonight than the station.
“Yes, she’s okay, she’s just really tired & I’m not going to leave her.” He answered. “Thanks.” He said then hung up.
Going back in, he knelt by the couch, “Hey Boys… Grandpa has supper on the table; go on mommy & I will be right behind you.”
“M’lady, could I walk you to supper?” Harley looked up as he took both her hands & balanced her as he helped her up. Kissing their joined hands they went to the table.
Everyone enjoyed the family time that they had at the kitchen table. They talked & laughed at the boys’ stories & antics. Susan filled her mom in on some of the things she was apart of at school.
A little later after dessert Gus cleaned up the kitchen while Buzz kept Harley company while Susan helped the boys pack for the night then packed her stuff.
“Sweetie, I meant to ask the other day, how’d the latest doctor’s appointment go?” Buzz wondered.
She smiled, “Dr. Sedgewick said everything looked good with the baby… said I was where I needed to be for 5 months. I was gaining the right amount of weight but not too much. So, everything looks good at this point.”
“Grandpa, we’re ready?” Susan replied as she and the boys came downstairs. “Alrighty.” “Gus…?” Harley called “dad & the kids are leaving.”
He came from the kitchen wiping his hands on a dish towel. “You guys all set?” he asked as he stood by his wife. Susan nodded as the boys ran over too them. After hugging Jude Gus lifted him, “Bye mommy.” He said as he kissed her cheek.
“Bye sweetie. Have a good time with grandpa.” “I will.”
Putting him down, Gus lifted Zach, “Zach you’re getting heavy little man.” He responded as Zach giggled; hugging him again he turned to Harley.
“Bye momma, I love you.”
Smiling she kissed his cheek. I love you too bug. We’ll see you tomorrow.” He nodded as he was set on the floor.
Gus stood & went to the door to close it after them. Before Buzz walked out he leaned in as if to hug his son-in-law but spoke quietly in his ear. “Take care of her.”
“I will.” He stated then he closed the door behind them. “Now to take care of Harley…” he thought.
Knowing that Gus had to go to the station tonight Harley pushed herself to her feet & headed to the kitchen to fix him a snack.
After closing the door Gus turned to look at her only to find she had moved. He followed the sound to the kitchen & watched as she made sandwiches. “Why are you pulling away from me…” he wondered. As he watched he could see she was tired but couldn’t relax.

Chapter 11
Chapter 10 was too long so I divided it into 2 chapters. Chapter 11 picks up where 10 leaves off.
Chapter 11 is rated PG-13 for content. Hope you enjoy! –GG

“What are you doing?” he wondered coming to her & lightly kissing her. When he did she pulled away.
“You’re going back to the station… I’m making you something to take with you.”
“I’m not going in honey.” He said quietly
“But you’re on duty tonight.” she wouldn’t look at him.
“Look at me?”
“No.” Walking to her he stopped in front of her & held out a hand, “Come with me?” he asked. Slowly she placed her hand in his & he led her from the kitchen up to their room.
“Wait here sweetheart.” He responded as she sat on the bed. Going in the bathroom he closed the door then began filling the tub with the bubble bath that Harley loved. In doing so he remembered how withdrawn she had become earlier at work. A few minutes later he came to kneel in front of her
“What’s wrong?”
“Nothing.” She mumbled.
“You need me tonight more than I need to be at work so here is where I’m staying.”
She stared at him, “There is a hot bath waiting for you—.” He helped her up, -- “if you need help getting in let me know.” He said as he shut the bathroom door behind her.
Not hearing her call out after a few minutes, Gus went to his closet & got the present off the shelf & placed the box in the middle of the bed. Then undressing he grabbed a pair of shorts & put them on then softly knocked on the door before opening it. Walking in he closed it behind him while Harley watched.
“You take my breath away… you are so beautiful.” He replied as she sat there covered in bubbles, her hair up & their baby she carried making her skin glow.
“What are you doing in here?”
Stopping at the tub, “scoot up baby so I can get behind you?” he asked. She didn’t move so he gently kissed the top of her hair she then moved forward & he stepped in & sat behind her.
“Lean back Harley.” When she did he held her.
Sitting in silence letting the water surround them she began to relax.
“Tell me what’s wrong?” he pleaded softly. “You know you can tell me anything. You were okay when you went to get us lunch but soon after you came back I noticed you were pulling back from me.”
“I’m as big as a house Gus.” She replied but he could hear tears in her voice. He was going to say something but sensed she wasn’t finished.
“What else?”
“I’m scared you don’t love me anymore because I look like this.” He held her closer…. “Oh Coop, what brought this on? Tell me?”
“I was in the deli getting lunch when this beautiful slender, long legged brunette walked in & seeing her; the first thing I thought was “Gus probably wishes I was still slender & beautiful & sexy. He doesn’t want me.” She slowly finished.
Bringing her face around to his; he kissed her deep, “You are the only woman I want, and I will love you forever. Even pregnant you are still my beautiful, sexy wife.” He responded.
“Are you sure?”
“Absolutely.” He said as he grabbed the wash cloth & soap & began to wash her back. Dropping kisses along her shoulder he nuzzled her neck, I want you to relax Coop he replied taking her hand & draped her arm around his neck. After he placed her arm around his neck he dropped his hand into the water & slowly ran his hand along her leg. “You have no idea how much I want you. Knowing her sensitivity to touch now; he went slowly. He stroked back up her leg to the inside of her thigh. Feeling her tense a little he stopped.
“It’s just us sweetheart, this is our time… Get to a more comfortable position.” When she did he wrapped around her. Leaning back she whispered in his ear. Smiling he did as she asked & dropped his hand back to the water & her thigh. Sighing at what he was doing she stretched as he took her weight. Realizing how heavy she must be she started to sit up. Stopping her he pulled her back to him. “I’m too heavy.” “No, you’re not, its nice being like this.” He slowly messaged the nape of her neck for a while. Then he helped her with her bath. After rinsing off he smiled. He levered himself up out of the tub. “I’ll let you finish.” Drying his shorts he kissed her. “Gus?”
“I won’t be far.” He said as he left the bathroom. Reaching for the box on the bed he cracked open the bathroom door placing the box on the sink.
Changing to dry pants he sat on the end of the bed & waited. In the bathroom Harley dried off then opened the box what she saw made her smile. She pulled out a royal blue slip nightie – “How?” she wondered shaking her head then saw the tag: “Should’ve known – “Lovely Mommy Maternity Wear.” She started to laugh. After putting the nightie on she pulled her hair down. Brushing through it she put it back up; she knew he loved it up for when she took a bath.
Opening the door she waited, “You look absolutely beautiful.” He said as she walked to him.
“I love it, thank you.” She whispered running her hands over his hair then kissing him. She knew where this would lead but of all her pregnancies this was the first where someone wanted to be with her when she was as big as a house & it concerned her.
“We can’t.”
Gus caressed her cheek, “we can honey I won’t do anything to hurt you or our child believe me, trust me.”
“I do.”
Standing they turned down the bed, “Turn toward my side.” He stated even as he sat down on the edge behind her.
“What are you doing?” “You’ll see.” He replied as he began to rub her back. “Oh I love it when you do this.” Gus chuckled; “Anything for you.” He responded while running kisses along her neck. After several minutes he climbed under the covers then struggled out of his clothes then dropped them on the floor.
Kissing her, he felt her let go & give into the kiss. A kiss that made her feel sexy & loved. Gently he moved her leg over his. Harley stared at him in surprise. “Don’t look so surprised babe, we can be creative when we need to be & this is one of those times.”
“That we can.” She replied laughing as she remembered some of those times.
Starting at her throat he kissed his way down until he reached her chest & lightly kissed the fullness of her breast. When she shrank away his head shot up, “Tender here?” he wondered. Harley nodded. Carefully he ran his hand under her gown until he reached her then placed a warm hand over her breast. “I love you beautiful.” He said seeing the look on her face. Through her gown his mouth replaced where his hand had been. After a few minutes she began to kiss his neck & his head came up to meet her kiss. With a whisper only for her he made them one. “She held him tight when she heard, “My Love.”
A little later as their breath was returning Harley laid her head against his heart & couldn’t help but smile as his heart raced.
“I still got it.” She thought to herself.” Then she looked at her husband. “See, that didn’t hurt a bit, did it?” Gus asked with wink.
“No,” she replied laughing. She stared at him, “I figured you would feel better.” He said answering her unspoken question.
“Gus honey, I love you & love looking at you but I need to turn over.”
“Sure.” Getting out of bed he slipped on the royal blue pajama pants & went to her side. Holding her hand to help her turn, he got her body pillow & waited until she was comfortable.
“Ready for this?” he asked motioning to the pillow. Nodding he helped her get situated so that she could sleep.
Going back to his side he climbed in then resting his head on his arm like Harley was he laid his other arm over their child, “Daddy loves Mommy very, very much.” When Harley looked over her shoulder they smiled.
“I love you Gus.”
“I love you too Harley, forever.” He held her closer. Making sure they were covered & warm Gus caressed her cheek, “Rest.” He said quietly before kissing her deeply. Lying behind her as he went to sleep he held her hand as they drifted off.

Chapter 12
Gus smiled as he walked through the door, he couldn’t wait to see his girl.
“Harley where are you honey?” he calls
“In the kitchen.” Pulling off his jacket he lays it over the banister then heads to his family.
Stopping at the door he admires her for a minute; lying what he has in his hands on the table. Wrapping his arms around her from behind; he holds her close.
“Hi handsome.” She says laughing as she turns in his arms & places her arms around his neck. Without waiting he claims her mouth with his. Breaking the kiss he looks down in her eyes.
“Close your eyes for minute Harley?” he asked. Doing so he lets go & picks up what he brought home.
“Okay sweetheart open them?”
“Gus!” she exclaims as he hands the roses to her. “Why?”
“Because I wanted too.”
Seeing her arch her back, he covers her tummy then turns her away from him, starting at the lower back he massages his way up her back as he feels the muscles loosen.
“That better.” He wonders feeling her sigh.
“You have wonderful hands.” She responds
“So, you tell me.” He chuckles “do I have time for a shower before dinner?”
“Yeah go ahead.” She says standing straight. “Gus wait…” he starts to walk away but turns when she stops him.
“Thanks for the flowers, I love them.” She replied; going to him, hugging him.
“And I love you.” He answered. “I’ll be back.” Reaching the door he stops.
“What the hell? He mumbles seeing what’s before him. His family room had disappeared and turned into a snow covered field. “Harley?” he called but there was no answer. Turning to look back at her he realized he was alone.
Taking a step he saw that a rose grew from the snow. With every step he took a rose grew. After several patches of flowers could be seen he stopped; as soon as he did the scene changed. He was standing in his back yard with Harley by his side and they were watching the kids play. He turned to go in to get a drink but stopped… the house they so lovingly built turned to roses before his eyes. Turning he found himself on a loading dock.
“I’m with you buddy… will get her back!” the man replied. “We have too.” Gus replied.
“Gus!!!!” he heard Harley shout.
“I’m coming baby.” He said softly, then glanced at the man beside him, “you come in behind him.” Nodding the man ran around to get in position as Gus continued thru to the area where he knew she was.
Once inside Gus stopped, “nice of all 3 of you to join us.” The man in the suit stated as one of the henchmen pulled the man that was behind out in the open.
“I want my wife & child back!” Gus growled. The man in the suit smiled, “The boss sends you his regards.” He laid a rose on the front hood of his car. “I don’t care.”
“Now, now when the boss speaks you listen, you know that.” The man with the suit said laying another rose down.
“I want my wife & child back!!” Gus growled again. “By all means Aitoro? Would you & the other gentleman join me first though?”
Neither man saw when the henchman turned a valve & walked away.
Both men walked to the man in the suit. “What?”
“Mr. R sends his regards.” He said again handing each man a rose.
As the man in the suit walked away he motioned to the men guarding Harley & the baby.
“Gus do you smell that?” MacIntyre asked.
“Yeah, lets get them out.” He replied as both men ran to where Harley was tied up all except for the arm holding the baby as the room began to fill with the strong smell.
Reaching her, they saw the ropes. Each pulled a knife to cut the ropes. Once she was free Gus helped pull her up. “Go, Gus!” MacIntyre shouted as they all fought to keep from inhaling whatever was opened. Gus reached to take the baby & when he did all he had was an empty blanket…
Gus bolted up in bed, when he did his stomach lurched. Throwing the covers back he ran to the bathroom before he was violently sick. Hearing him, Harley opened the door; wet a cloth & waited. Standing he refused to look at her even as he took the cloth. Not saying a word she watched while he moved to the sink & hung his head.
She placed her hand on the back of his shoulder as she looked at him in the mirror, “what happened?”
“I’m okay.” He said weakly. If he had sounded like himself she would’ve believed it.
“No, you’re not sweetie,” she replied holding him tighter.
He watched her in the mirror as she began to rub his back like she does with Zach when he’s scared.
“How did I ever live without her in my life?” He thought to himself as he continued to look at her in the mirror. Turning he pulled her into his arms & just held on for a few minutes before taking her hand & pulling her from the bathroom
“Come with me?” he asked.
Following him into their room he stopped in front of the rocking chair that was already in the corner, “Dance with me beautiful.”
“What? Now?” she asked confused.
“Now.” He stated as he wrapped her carefully in his arms. Together they danced a few steps then just swayed as he tried to settle. After a few minutes he sat down in the rocker. As he started to pull her down Harley stopped
“Gus, no I too heavy.” She started to complain.
“Harley, look at me please.” He responded.
When she did he squeezed her hand, “You aren’t too heavy babe, I wanna tell you but I need to know you’re real.” he said. Hearing the weakness back in his voice that she’d heard earlier she let him pull her to sit in his lap. After making sure she was comfortable he grabbed the blanket that had been on the dresser & threw it over both of them.
“Tell me?” she requested
“I dreamed of roses.” He said. “I don’t know why, I came home from work & brought you roses, as I stared to leave the room in the dream the dream itself changed & I was alone in a frozen field but Roses grew. The longer I stayed there the dream changed again & this time I was on a waterfront dock & you & our child where being held hostage ---.”
“We’re right here.” She said quietly placing his hand on her stomach.
“But I still can’t figure it out babe, the guy I was talking to acted like he knew me… he kept telling me & MacIntyre that ‘Mr. R. gives me his regards.”
“MacIntyre?” Harley asked.
“Yeah, he was my partner on my first case. But I can’t figure out how I would know this guy or who ‘Mr. R would be.”
“Sweetheart, it sounds like in your dream the past & present collided.” Harley said kissing him softly. “When MacIntyre & I tried to rescue you… there was no baby.” He said looking at her dejectedly. “I have to figure this out Harley before this drives me nuts honey.
“You will baby, I’ll do whatever I can to help you figure out what happened in the past to cause this problem now.” She replied. He nodded knowing what she referred too.
“Will you still love me when we find the answer? I wanted to be the man that gave you everything… not a lot of baggage.” He stated as he slowly began to rock.
Looking up at him he saw the love in her eyes & believed her.
Sitting in silence, both comfortable where they were & not wanting to move. “I’ll find the answers I’m looking for.” He thought to himself as he leaned his head back & Harley placed her head on his shoulder; her hand over his heart.
In that moment Gus had peace as he rest his cheek on the top of her hair.

Chapter 13
I have moved up time… Harley is now 7 months pregnant. ~~ GG

Gus carefully unwound himself from around Harley. His mind was to busy to sleep right now. Climbing from the bed he quickly pulled the covers up on his side so his warmth would stay with her. Going to her side he knelt, kissing her cheek softly, “I love you baby.” He whispered standing then pulled the covers up over her shoulder even as she snuggled deeper underneath them.
Leaving the door cracked where he could hear her he headed down the hall but stopped at the boys’ rooms to check on them before going into the office & booting up the computer.
“Okay Mr. R, let’s see who you are & why you’re invading my dreams.” He mumbled.
Pulling up an FBI crime browser he typed, Mr. R, Chicago, 1984 in the search box & hit go. While he was waiting he let his gaze wonder to the picture & smiled.
Looking back at the screen he saw that there was a list compiled. Very carefully he began to read the synopsis on the cases to see which fit the case he was looking for. After scanning 3 more pages his eyes drew him to a synopsis that had chills going up his spine.
Aug 2, 1984- Two of our operatives Detectives A & M went undercover for Mr. R in a drug running ring. Drugs run through his organization are Cocaine as well as the street drug Delirium. Both operatives are in tight w/ Mr. R. as part of his entourage. Due to a misfortune in our knowledge we didn’t realize that Mr. R also dealt with DCP & we had to remove our operatives rather quickly when they became exposed to it for a while. Maybe they were lucky & weren’t exposed to the DCP very long.
“That’s gotta be it, that has to be the operation McIntyre & I were put on.” Gus replied staring at the screen.
“Gus?” he heard come from the doorway. Looking up he pushed away from the desk as Harley walked in. “Hey baby, are you okay?” he wondered.
“I woke up with my back hurting & when I reached for you, I realized you were gone.” She remarked.
“Ahh I’m sorry Harley, come here.” He held out a hand as she stopped in front of him. He patted his leg; “I want you to straddle my leg honey.” He pulled her gently down. Slowly he began to rub up & down her back as he did he felt her arch. After several minutes he placed a kiss on her shoulder, “Maybe that will help.”
She nodded and stood, “I think I’ll stay in here with you for a while.”
“You need rest honey.”
“I’ll sleep here on the couch.” She replied. “You won’t be comfortable.” “But you’re here.” She amended as she went & lay on the couch.
“Are you sure?” he questioned. “I can sleep while you work.” Standing he walked to the corner & grabbed a blanket & pillow & came back. She gave him a smile as he handed her the pillow; then covered her up. Squatting in front of her he pushed the hair off her cheek, “You sleep baby, I’ll be finished in a while.” Going back to the desk he sat & watched as she drifted off then turned facing the screen.
Going back to the crime browser he switched pages & in search box typed Chicago crime families starting with R then pressed enter & waited. It only took a minute for the names to come up since there were only two names, Crime family Rodriguez, & Crime family Rosetti.” Clicking on the link for Rodriguez he began to read the dossier for the head of the family Paulo & his activities. Not seeing anything about “Mr. R” or any reference to the drugs Cocaine or Delirium or to a DCP Gus moved out & clicked on the link for Michael Rossetti & began reading his dossier.
Name: Michael Rossetti
Head of the Rossetti Crime family
Area: Chicago, this has been his marked territory that the FBI knows of for at least the last 15 years.
Alias Names used: Mr. R
Deals in: Drug running of the drugs Cocaine & the “Street drug” Delirium as well as has control of something by the code name of DCP.
Side note: He is the only crime boss that we know of that will use a certain symbol when leaving messages… he will has his henchmen leave roses for the people he deals with.
“That’s it!” Gus whispered realizing he was looking at the dossier of the Crime boss he & McIntyre were undercover for.
“Now only if I can remember the details of the operation.” Just then Harley jumped straight up, “Gus! She called.
Seeing her jump up he went to her taking her hand, “I’m here babe, what happened.
She looked up, “My water just broke.”

Chapter 14
“What, you’re not due for another 2 months sweetheart?” Gus said just as a contraction came. “I know.” She tried to say as she did her breathing.
When the contraction stopped he squeezed her hand, “I’ll be right back baby, let me wake Susan.” He said as he ran out the door. Running downstairs & across the family room he pounded on Susan’s door, “Sus I need you to get up now… it’s your mom!” he called. A minute later she opened the door, “Mom?”
“Yeah, her water just broke I have to get her to the hospital now. Will you watch the boys?”
“Yes, yes go!” She said as he ran back into there bedroom. Quickly pulling on jeans & stepping in shoes as he pulled the black t-shirt on then went back to Harley.
“Okay babe, we’re outta here.” He replied as he helped her down the stairs. As he helped her step in shoes then pulled her jacket around her sweatpants & shirt she looked at Susan, “Granddad will be here in 15 minutes to bring you guys to the hospital.” With that they were out the door.
Once in the car, Harley grabbed his hand “Relax & take a breath Gus before you pass out on me.” He looked at her & took a deep breath, “Gus, we'll be fine.” She replied as they headed to the hospital; on the way they called Dr. Sedgewick.
At the Hospital…
Dr. Sedgewick met them outside as they parked. Once Harley was situated in a wheelchair the doctor took over & pushed her down the hallway forcing Gus to walk beside her.
Changing into a hospital gown Harley was about to climb on the bed when a contraction hit. Seeing her, Gus loosely held her as she wrapped her arms around his neck. Swaying slightly he took her weight while her breathing was like a gust of wind by his ear. Feeling her begin to relax he waited. She didn’t let go when he thought she would.
“I’m scared Gus.” She replied in his ear.
Pulling back he looked at her, “I am too but you & I are strong sweetheart & whatever happens we will get through this together.” Helping her on the bed, the doctor turned toward them, “Gus I need to examine her now to see if we can stop her labor could you step outside for a minute.” She asked
With a desperate look to each other Gus slipped from the room & closed the door behind him. Leaning against the wall with his head back he ran his hands over his eyes & left them there.
“Gus?” a voice said as he moved his hands. Looking up he saw his father-in-law & Coop standing there.
“How’s Harley?”
“I don’t know Buzz; the doctor’s examining her now to see if the labor can be stopped.” Buzz nodded. “It’s too early Buzz, the baby…” Gus started to say but his voice broke.
Shaking his head he took a deep breath. “What about Susan & the boys?” he wondered.
“They are in the waiting room; Frank couldn’t leave the station when I called him but he’ll get here as soon as he can.” Buzz responded.
The door beside Gus opened just then & doctor walked out. “Gus, can I speak with you?”
He nodded as she turned to speak with the men that Harley loved. “I finished the exam & unfortunately there is no way we can stop the labor, the baby will be born today.”
“Will it survive Dr. Sedgewick?” Gus asked as the blood pounded in his ears. “Yes the baby will survive it is just premature. Harley’s contractions are beginning to come faster, she’s asking for you.”
Not saying a word Gus slipped inside, seeing her fight with a contraction he ran to her & sat down on the bed, “Look at me, honey.” When she did he continued, “Looser babe.” Watching the contraction fade on the monitor he faced her again, “So, we’re having this baby today.” Tears pooled in her eyes, I’m only 29 weeks, the baby’s too small.” She replied anxiously.
Gently rubbing the back of her hand, “If this baby has a stubborn streak anywhere near like yours & mine it will pull through.” He said slowly trying to get her to believe it.
They sat in the quiet holding hands as Harley’s contractions came faster. After an hour Dr. Sedgewick appeared & checked her, “It’s time Harley.” She said as the orderlies moved her down the hall.
“No, can’t we wait?” she begged. “You can, but apparently your baby doesn’t want to wait…” the doctor replied. Going in they got Harley set as her husband tightened his hand around hers.
“I love you sweetheart.” He whispered as he sat beside her. “Harley, I need you to push now.” Dr. Sedgewick said as Gus counted for her.
“Again Harley.”
Gathering her strength she did what was instructed. Gus leaned in close and quietly spoke to her as she pushed. After several minutes she opened her eyes & looked straight at Gus, meeting her eyes he whispered, “Push, again you’re doing good.” She knew he was giving her strength.
“Stop Harley.” Dr. said just as a cry filled the room.
“It’s a boy!”
Gus smiled at Harley even as the parents listened to the doctor. “He is 3 lbs. 4 ozs. Guys we will have to take him to the ‘Preemie Nursery’ so he can be put in an incubator & monitored.”
“Will you go with him Gus?” Harley asked fighting tears. He nodded then walked to the doctor. “Can she see him before you place him in the incubator?”
Dr. Sedgewick smiled, “Of course.” Then walked over, “Here you go little guy, you’re mommy wants to see you.” She said passing the baby to Harley.
She stared at her son gently tracing his tiny ear. Looking up she saw Gus, “He looks like you.” She whispered. He nodded silently as a single tear rolled down his cheek.
“I need to take him now.” The doctor replied as she took him & a nurse placed him in an incubator. “One of the nurses will take you back to your room Harley & when I know more I’ll let you know.”
“I’ll be with him.” Gus promised; kissing her he followed them out the door & to the nursery.
Once at the nursery Dr. Sedgewick began her assessment as Gus looked on. Watching he saw when she placed a tiny blindfold over his eyes & placed him under a bright light and ordered that they alter 10 minutes with light & 10 minutes without the light for the next hour.
“What’s going on.” He asked immediately. “Gus hold on.”
“No, damn it. That’s my son Dr. Sedgewick.” Turning to him she placed her hand on his arm. “Because he is small he has developed a slight case of jaundice so I’m placing him on the light so that it can help with the jaundice.”
“Let me finish the exam & then I’ll talk to both of you.”
“Can I see him a second before I go back to Harley?” he wondered.
“Yes of course. Just slip your hands through the hand holes & you can touch him.”
When the nurses moved in to surround the incubator Dr. Sedgewick held them back, “Give him a minute.”
Slipping his hands through the hand holes on one side he began to softly caress his son’s skin. “Hey kiddo, I’m your daddy. I wanted to let you know that I was here & that I love you. Kiddo your mom can’t be here right this minute but she’ll come see you soon. She loves you very much. I know you’re strong just like your mommy so you fight to get better okay? I’ll be back to see you soon I promise but right now I need to go see mom okay. Know that Mommy & Daddy love you so much!” He said in a fierce whisper. Standing there he just continued stroking his son for a minute.
Turning he nodded at Dr. Sedgewick. “I’ll be up in a few minutes Gus.” She said as he left the nursery with a look at his son.
Back at Harley’s room… He quietly walked in carrying a package, setting it down he went to her.
“Is he okay?” Harley wondered the instant she saw her husband. The doctor’s still doing a few things to check him out, she’ll be up in a few minutes to fill us in.” he replied as he sat next to her.
“How are you?” he wondered. “Sore, they gave me something to help the soreness.” He kissed her hand. “Did you see the family?” She nodded. “Dad came in after he found out about the baby & sat with me a few minutes before Frank came in to let me know he was taking the boys home & get them ready for school; & he’d stay with them. Dad & Susan are in the waiting room.”
Why?” she whispered.
“I don’t know baby, but our son’s a fighter he’ll be okay.” Just then there was a knock and Dr. Sedgewick came in.
“I wanted to update you on your son, Harley the baby has a slight case of jaundice so we have him under a light to help that… it will most likely fade within the next hour or two. Because he was premature the baby will need to stay in an incubator, he needs to gain weight so we are feeding him a supplement & when its time you can get the bottles ready & will add the supplement along with your milk. He hadn’t developed far enough to learn how to suck so he can’t go home until he does.”
“So he has to stay in the hospital.” Gus stated. “Yes, until he manages to be able to learn the sucking reflex & gains a few more pounds.”
Harley reached for Gus wrapping her arms around his neck. Holding her gently he looked back at the doctor, “I saw some babies had their incubators a little decorated could we do that for our son?”
“Absolutely, that’d be great, the nurses would love it & letting your son know that you guys are there will help him. I’ll leave you now but if you need something; tell the nurse or have them page me. Harley try & rest.” The doctor replied then left them.
Going to the package in the chair he picked it up and brought it back to Harley as he sat down. She watched him. Leaning over he kissed her
“Let’s give our son a name.” he responded.
She smiled as they dumped the bag upside down on the bed and they began to pull colored construction paper out of the pack as well as getting the markers.
“Did you have a boy’s name picked out sweetheart?” Gus asked. She nodded & told him, “Hey I like that.”
“You do?” Harley asked. He nodded, “I think it will go well with the name I picked as his middle name.”
After hearing the names together they both loved it got to work constructing a sign. Once the colors were picked Harley waited as Gus quickly drew out things like a football, baseball, baseball bat of different colors & then they cut them out & glued the shapes on the sign. Once the sign was liked they liked it Gus took the sign & laid it out on the floor then sat on the floor as he wrote on the sign.
Afterward, he held it up for Harley & she grinned, “I love it.” Standing Gus placed the sign against the wall, “We’ll take it to him later but you need to rest first.”
Gus came & carefully climbed in bed with her & they stared at the sign, “Harley, Thank you sweetheart. He’s beautiful.”
“I want to see him.” She replied. Brushing her hair back he kissed her temple, “I know… you will soon.” They both smiled as they looked at the sign and like what they saw as they read it:
