“Daddy, will you call Kevin and tell him that we are having a family meeting tonight at the Bar & Grill and Nick and I need him and Lindsay there.” “Listen dad, somebody is at the door I gotta go, yeah, kiss the boys for us… Bye.” She replied hanging up. She watched as he sat up carefully then she opened the door.
Both were surprised at who stood there but Nick waved her in, Sarah shut the door behind her. “Joanie what are you doing here?” Sarah wondered. “My mom called me earlier, saying she’d talked to you Uncle Nick? He nodded as she moved to sit by him on the couch. “I’ll finish the calls upstairs honey.” Sarah replied as they both watched her go up the stairs. “Yeah I did call your mom Alyssa because I wanted to talk with her about a few things--.” “That’s what mom said” Joanie interrupted, “She wanted you to know that since she and dad are still out of town on his business trip and couldn’t be here tonight that’s why she sent me.” He nodded slowly, “What is happening tonight? Joanie questioned. “It’s a family meeting at Nate’s” Nick looked up when he saw her unsure of something, “Joanie what is it sweetie?”
“Greg? She asked hesitantly. Nick glanced away as he smiled, he knew she liked him. “Greg will be at the Bar & Grill?” Joanie wondered. “I would imagine so since he’ll be working tonight; why? Her uncle answered. “Well I really like him & we are going out but I’m not really sure how well he likes me, it’s just ‘He sees me; I mean really sees who I really am. He gives me the chance to 'fly’ even when he’s right beside me holding my hand. He’s my strength when it all gets too much for me, all I have to do is look at him and...” she stopped as if trying to find the right word.
Nick smiled as he waited -- he knew what she was trying to say, since he had gotten to know Greg he also knew that the young man liked Joanie quite a lot since they’d been spending time together, “He’s a quiet strength for you.” Her uncle stated.
“How did you know?” Joanie asked, looking at him startled, “because Sarah is that for me, when I don’t think I can handle anymore all I have to do is look at her.” He responded as he looked up at his niece. Joanie smiled then continued, “Anyway Greg can calm me down when I need it. They both looked up as Sarah made her way into the room & sat down in front of them on the coffee table. “So what did I miss?” she asked. “Just talking about stuff.” Joanie replied grinning. Nick nodded as Joanie took his hand. Sarah saw the frustration play across his face when Joanie took his hand then he looked at her & she knew he couldn’t feel her touch.
Sarah lightly ran her fingers over the back of his other wrist, as Joanie continued, “He says he likes me but I just don’t know?” she replied. Nick realized how unsure of herself when they saw tears fall. “I’ll go get her some water honey.” He looked over to her and she stood. The frustration showed in his eyes as he looked at their niece as she buried her face in his shirt.
Coming, back, Sarah leaned over and quietly spoke in his ear, “Greg is supposed to be with her tonight.” He bunched his free hand in her hair in acknowledgement that he heard her, “How can I break her heart?” he mouthed to his wife as Nick ran his hand over Joanie’s back.
“Joanie honey, drink this okay and try to steady a bit.” Sarah said as she sat up and took the water from her aunt. “I’m sorry Nick.” she said seeing the wet spot on his shirt. “It’s okay. I want you to know that I’m here if you need me and so is Sarah.” He said lightly squeezing his niece. She looked over as Sarah nodded. “We are both here if you need us.”
Nick carefully sat straight up and took Joanie’s hand in his, “Aren’t you supposed to meet Greg?” When she nodded he winked, “Okay wipe those eyes and take some deep breaths and go see him and let him make you smile.”
Sarah herself smiled as she heard that. Standing Joanie hugged her and then leaned over to hug Nick, after she left Nick looked at Sarah, “let Greg make her smile before I tear the smile off her face.” He whispered. “Oh honey” Sarah said quietly caressing his arm.
Taking her hand he just stared in her eyes and didn’t blink for a minute so he could have that strength he was telling his niece about then gently he took the phone from her and dialed a number.
“Hey Greg its Nick.” he said “Yeah everything’s okay Joanie just came to see me and now she’s on her way to see you, can you do something for me and make her smile?” he asked
On the other end of the phone Greg was puzzled but answered, “Sure Nick I’m supposed to see her tonight but with Nate calling the family meeting ---.” Greg started to say but Nick cut him off. “See her Greg and make sure she stays with you for the meeting no matter how much she protests… Oh & I know you like my niece so make sure she knows that, we’ll see you later.” Nick replied and then hung up.
“Sweetheart how can I do this…?” he asked with frustration in his voice and his eyes.
Both Nick and Sarah sat in silence for a few minutes when she turned on the couch to face him, "What did your sister say when you told her?"
He gave a dismal laugh as he laid his head back against the cushion, "What could she say honey? It was five minutes of silence on her end of the line. I knew mom and dad were in London visiting with her and Daniel, so I asked her to go ahead and fill them in so they wouldn't be bombarded with all this when they get back in a few days since they aren't staying the entire time Alyssa and Daniel have to until Daniel's company finishes this deal. Until Alyssa and Daniel come back, sis said she'd check in with me every week and see how we were doing; but if something happens or comes up to call her."
