Walking in Nick’s hospital room Jeff stopped quickly when he saw their private moment stepping back out. He’d let them have a minute. Waiting a minute longer he knocked on the door frame to warn them and then went in.
“Hi guys.” He said as he walked in. “Nick, I need to let you know that Dr. Johnson will be taking over your case so he’ll be your primary doctor from now on. I’ll still consult but he knows more about the symptoms than I do.” He finished as Nick nodded.
“He did ask me to put you on a heart monitor so that’s what I’m about to do okay?”
“Heart monitor, why?” Sarah asked worried. “Relax sweetie.” Jeff replied calmly. “Dr. Johnson just wants to make sure whatever is causing these spells isn’t affecting his heart.” Jeff reassured her as he placed two small round electrodes on Nick’s chest then clipped something over his left finger to monitor the pulse. Turning the main monitor on the sound of Nick’s heart could be heard.
Dr. Johnson walked in with a lab tech behind him, “Dr. Garrett get you all set Nick?” he asked. He grudgingly gave a thumbs up before Dr. Johnson propped on the sink, “There is a set of preliminary tests I want to run now that is a why the lab tech is here to take some blood okay?” The lab tech took blood as the Dr. told them about the second test. Once the blood samples were in the doctor’s hands, the tech left and Jeff and Dr. Johnson stepped out in the hall. Sarah closed the door and then pulled the curtain around the bed. She stood on the other side of the curtain until Nick was done. Outside in the hall, Jeff spoke to Brett in a low voice, “There is something you need to know about Nick and his wife, they love each other very much and if what he has is what we think then you’ll see how unified they are as a couple. But I know them; Sarah is scared about this whole thing and about loosing him and even though Nick tries to hide it he’s scared for the same reasons. Even though he’s the patient you’ll need to include Sarah as well because she needs to know what’s going on and he won’t hide things from her, so when you talk to him talk to her too. If you should need her to leave, explain why?”
Brett nodded, “Are they that tight?” Jeff answered, “You’ll see.”
“Dr. Johnson, Jeff, he’s done.” Sarah replied opening the door. The men followed her inside. “Okay, let me take these to be tested and see what we see…I’m not going to lie if there is anything specific I see Nick; that I think you have I’m going to run a another test and the test for your symptoms is a spinal tap.
Nick reached for Sarah even as she took his hand. “What do you think I have?” he asked his anxiety spiking when she saw him cross his arms over his chest. “I can’t be certain right now plus I’d rather not say until I look over these two tests here. So for now just rest and the tap won’t happen unless I need it to tell me more. I’ll be back when I know more.” Dr. Johnson stated as he walked out. “I’ll check on you guys later okay.” Jeff replied.
“Sarah, Dr. Johnson is a neurologist.” Nick said quietly closing his eyes “I know baby, Jeff told me.” She sat beside him threading her fingers through his. When he felt her fingers she saw relief come in his eyes when he looked at her. She remembered the jolt he had tried to hide out in the parking lot. “Nick, can I ask you something?” He nodded and she continued, “Why did you jolt and pull away while we were in the parking lot?”
He looked at the ceiling then at her, “Because when I ran my hands down your back out there I couldn’t feel your back as I touched you.” He responded softly. “Oh honey, can you feel my touch now?” She asked squeezing his hand. “Yeah, now I can.”
“I’ll be fine.” Nick stated. He wasn’t sure which one of them he was trying to convince more, himself or Sarah. She smiled slowly as she ran her hands through his hair; something was definitely wrong and it scared her more than Nick realized; that neither of them knew what it was.
Reaching for the phone by the bed Sarah glanced at him, “Baby I’m going to call daddy and let him know what’s going on.” Rubbing her arm as she dialed he couldn’t help but stare; he loved to watch her. “Sweetheart, Dad wants to talk to you.” She passed him the phone. “Yeah Nate,” “Hey Nick, I just wanted you to know the boys are fine you just concentrate on you and my daughter okay… oh Billy asked me, to tell you he loves you.” Nick felt his heart swell with love, “Tell both the boys I love them very much.” He said passing the phone back to Sarah. When she hung up he said on a whisper, “What if this is something I can’t fight baby? I can’t leave my girl or my boys.”
“Shhh Nick, we’ll fight whatever it is together.” Sarah said quietly as she caresses his cheek. Seeing her when he opens his eyes again he reaches a hand up to place against her face, “How did this lonely, unsure, scared, man get so lucky to end up with a woman like you?”
“Fate, Adams. It was fate.” She responded as he laughed but she saw him shiver under the covers. “Are you cold baby?” “Yeah, just a bit,” He answered as he shivered again. She stood pulling the covers up around him. Moving to where his clothes were she grabbed his socks and came back to the end of the bed. Pulling the covers up from the bottom she uncovered his feet; he smiled watching her. Carefully she put his socks on then covered his feet again. “Thanks.” Sarah wanted to hear him laugh so she carefully pulled the covers up so she could see his legs, “Anytime, Handsome, anytime.” He chuckled as she covered him back up and leaned over to kiss him.
“Hmmmm, Nick, Sarah.” Dr. Johnson said as he walked in early the next morning. When they looked up Sarah’s eyes went to the doctor’s, “The tests are back?”
Nodding they watched him slide a stool over to the bed and sit down.
“Give it to us straight doctor.” Nick replied when he saw the doctor’s face, “You need to do the spinal tap?” he asked.
“Yes I do Nick, I put a rush on the tests so we have the results back and from the first tests they show that you have a high level of protein in your system, which based on the symptoms you have is not a good sign.—-.” “What does he have Dr. Johnson?” Sarah interrupted.
“Based on the results of the exams that Dr. Garrett and I did and looking over the symptoms that Nick told me he’s had – the falling, loss of balance, cramps in thighs, tingling and pins & needles sensations, etc. He may have what’s called Guillain-Barre Syndrome or (GBS) for short; however I can’t tell for certain without the spinal tap, so Nick if you can handle another test I’ll like to get it done.” He finished.
“Can Sarah come with me?” he asked.
Dr. Johnson looked at them for a minute, “I’d rather not Nick let’s try it first and if I see you’re having a hard time relaxing even with what we have to give you for the test I’ll come get her deal?”
They both nodded as Sarah leaned over to touch his lips, “I’ll be waiting right here when you come back.” When she tried to stand he pulled her back to him and kissed her again, “I love you” Running a finger over his lips she stood and the orderlies wheeled him out of the room, “Sarah the test will take about 30-45 minutes after that I’ll come back with him and explain.” Dr. Johnson replied as he walked out leaving her there to wait.
Once the door shut she slid to the floor where the bed had been and leaned back. Not able to hold back the tears she’d been fighting she let them go she couldn’t hold them in any longer.
“No…No… Don’t let me loose him, god don’t let me loose him please!! She begged. We’ll fight whatever illness this is together; just don’t let me loose him.” She repeated over and over as the tears fell.
A little bit later, when someone called her name; she looked up, it was the doctor and he was bringing Nick back. Jumping to her feet she moved out of the way so the orderlies could put the bed back in place. Glancing over she saw that Nick was asleep; the doctor pulled the stool over and sat in front of her. “Sarah, let me explain the test we just ran on your husband.” He replied as he watched her with her husband.
“He’s asleep, he’s okay.” When she looked back at him he continued, “With this test we removed a little fluid from around the spinal column. I’ll have this tested and tomorrow I’ll have the results. I want you both to come in my office here at the hospital about 11:00 and we’ll talk about all? Ask Dr. Garrett where my office is and he’ll show you.”
“Dr. Johnson? Why is he asleep?” she wondered. “He’s in a twilight sleep, he was having a difficult time relaxing; while we were trying to give the anesthetic so I was about to come get you and he asked me not too so I changed and gave him an anesthetic with a very mild sedative.”
“Did he finally calm down?” The doctor nodded, “Yes, he started rubbing his wedding band as the medicine took effect and he relaxed. His back will be sore as the medicine wares off, he may complain of a headache; if he does notify the nurses’ station and they’ll bring him the medicine I’ll prescribe for him. It’s best for him to sleep right now, if you need something let me know.” He said and with a goodnight he left.
She sat by the bed holding his hand and listening to his heartbeat; that’s how Jeff found her a little later when he stopped by. “Sarah?” Jeff said quietly walking in. “How is he?” “He’s sleeping now.” She replied. “Did Dr. Johnson need to do the spinal tap?” he questioned. “Yeah, that’s why he’s asleep. He’ll check the results tomorrow morning before Nick and I meet in his office at 11:00. Can you come by in the morning and show me where the office is?” Jeff nodded, “You get some sleep and I’ll see you in the morning,” After kissing her cheek he left her.
Sitting back in the recliner she took Nick’s hand in hers stroking the back with her thumb she watched him. “Sarah?” Nick tried to say waking up even though his mouth felt like a cotton ball. Hearing him, Sarah leaned over, “I’m here love; I’m here.” She responded stroking his cheek. Turning his head he saw her, “Are you hurting?” Shaking his head he cleared his throat, “Just sleepy. Come sleep here?” he asked trying to pat the spot next to him.
Standing she slipped in next to him knowing he couldn’t fall with him between the rail and her. “Better?” she wondered as she got comfy laying her head by his. “Yeah I need my girl with me.” He said drifting off.
“I’m here sweetheart, just sleep.” Sarah whispered kissing his lips softly. With a smile Nick linked his left hand through hers and both slept as their rings could be seen side by side.
“Hi guys.” He said as he walked in. “Nick, I need to let you know that Dr. Johnson will be taking over your case so he’ll be your primary doctor from now on. I’ll still consult but he knows more about the symptoms than I do.” He finished as Nick nodded.
