Soulmates II... Chapter 1
As promised here is my next story! For my readers who liked my story Soul mates… this is Soul mates II. A few mentions here… This story will be a little different since Gus and Harley still have their history since they were 10. *** Writer’s note: The timeline will not match. (This event happened like it did in GL original history. (Please consider this sort of a “missing chapter” that fit between Harleys discovering Buzz was her father and GusH’s engagement…I left this event out of my original story for a reason) Gus was there as he always was to help Harley through difficult times just as she has been there for him. They are already married in this story; have been for 3 years. I will play off the history from the original Soul mates story. You will understand how I’ve written it. With that being said, I hope you enjoy the next venture of Gus and Harley as they experience ups and downs.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“Harley!” Gus called after her as he watched her run through the door. She heard him call her name but she just couldn’t stop she had to get out of there. Jumping in the car she drove away leaving Gus there watching from the door. He stood there staring for just a minute before he grabbed his jacket and the keys, thankful that both Zach and Jude were at the Bauer’s he locked up and drove away not sure where to look for Harley but he knew he had to find her.
As Gus drove he kept looking for her car even as he tried to think of what could be bothering Harley. She knew she could tell him anything after all they have been together since they were 10 and even now being married; she knew he’d understand. Looking out the window he kept hoping for his cell phone to ring. Gus wasn’t sure how long he’d been driving when he happened to look out the window to his left as he past the cemetery. He slowed when he saw a man he thought looked familiar standing at a grave.
Watching he saw the man lay flowers down and stay crouched in that position. Getting a good look at the man’s face he realized it was Frank standing there.
“Why are you here Frank?” Gus wondered out loud as he watched his brother-in-law.
Sitting there Gus began to think and realized what today was and what it meant. “Nine years ago today.” He whispered. Then he took off knowing exactly where he would find her. Stopping in the parking lot of the docks Gus jumped out and looked around then ran to the dock. Stepping up he saw her sitting there staring at the water. Shrugging out of his jacket Gus wrapped it around her as he sat down behind her.
Knowing she wouldn’t want to talk just yet, Gus let himself remember and think back to the day that Frank had gotten the call to come to the docks because a body had been found. Frank and he had come down to survey the scene and they both had seen when the body had been brought up. As Gus had been getting some gloves on he’d watched as Frank crouched down and removed the carpet from around the persons face.
When he heard Frank’s sharp intake of breath and saw his face go white Gus walked over, “What?” he asked looking down at the face. Gus knew he should recognize the face but he wasn’t sure where
“Frank, who?” Gus asked afraid he already knew by the look on Frank’s face. “It’s Nadine.” he replied slowly staring at his mother’s face. “She didn’t disappear willingly Gus.” he whispered.
Gus slowly nodded to an officer as he began to walk Frank away from the body. Realizing what he was doing Frank tried to walk toward his mother’s body, “Gus No!” he remarked. Gus put his arm up to stop him. “Frank, Let me take care of it, I’ll be gentle. Go wait over there he said to him pointing to where the other officer was waiting for Frank and after we finish here you and I will go tell Harley together.” Gus replied before he walked away. Frank watched as his heart broke as he said goodbye to his mother. After a little bit, Gus led Frank away from the dock and to the car and then drove to Harley.
At the house…
Frank opened the door, “Sis!” He called as he came in with Gus behind him and he closed the door as Frank disappeared down the hall.
“I’m in here Frank.” Harley yelled from the den. Both men started in that direction and they saw her sitting on the couch looking through reports that she had brought home the night before so she could go over them on her day off. Her brother kissed her cheek as she looked up. Seeing Gus, she got off the couch and went to him.
“Hey honey.” She said as she kissed him.
“Hey Baby.” He replied as he hugged her tight. When she looked up in his eyes she saw the smile didn’t reach his eyes. Knowing him she asked, “What’s wrong?”
“Sweetie come sit with me ok? There is something you need to know about.” He replied as he walked her back to the couch then sat down pulling Harley to sit on his lap as Frank sat on the coffee table in front of them.
“What?” she asked now seeing the look on her brother’s face? “Sis, Gus and I got called to the docks this afternoon because apparently the river has melted from where it froze this past winter and a body was found there today. “Really?” Harley wondered. “Yeah, so Gus and I went to see what was going on and when I checked the body… Frank started to say but let his sentence die as the three sat in silence.
In the silence, Gus held on to Harley tighter as he fought tears back seeing how hard this was for Frank. Her brother began again, “When I checked the body I recognized the person sis.” Frank stated.
“Sis, it was mama. She didn’t disappear, she was killed.”
“No, Frankie.” She replied as she looked at Gus. When she did Gus placed a hand on her cheek as he looked in her eyes
“I’m so sorry Harley, It was your mom.” He whispered.
Seeing her tears and feeling when she grabbed his shirt and balled herself up tighter in his lap she leaned into Gus and really began to cry. Frank sat there watching as Gus wrapped her in his arms and with his cheek against her forehead began to gently rock her as she cried.
Gus stared at Frank, “I’ll be back I need to go for a walk then figure out how to tell Buzz since she was his wife.” Frank whispered. He nodded, “I’ll be here.” Her brother nodded; he stood up and walked to Harley. Gus stopped rocking her long enough for Frank to kiss the top of her head then as continued. When he heard Frank close the door Gus let his tears fall for the woman he was holding as her heart broke. He continued to rock her and whisper I love -----.
Gus was drawn back to the present when he heard Harley whisper; “It’s been nine years ago today. I still miss her Gus. ” “I know sweetheart.” Leaning back against him she continued to stare at the water
“You were there for me then and you’re here now.” She replied. He kissed her neck below her ear as he replied, “You knew I would be; we’ve been there for each other since we were ten, honey.” “Can you hold like you did then?” Harley asked looking up at her husband. Nodding he pulled her into his lap and slowly rocked her. “Where were you a few minutes ago?” she wondered “I looked at you and you were miles away.” He looked at her, “I was remembering.”
Caressing his face she whispered, “Take me home.” Without letting her go Gus stood with her in his arms. Standing there she quietly said, “I love you mama.” He then said, “She’s safe Nadine take care.” And carried her out to the car and drove home.
Soulmates II... Chapter 2
This will pick up where chapter 1 left off…. The Nine year anniversary of Nadine’s death. I know you all are probably screaming at me for starting off this way LOL I promise it will get better.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“Sweetheart I need to make a couple of stops before we go home alright?” Gus asks. She nodded as she leaned her head back and closed her eyes. He glanced over to her as he drove. Reaching over Gus picked her hand up and laid it on his thigh and held it there. Stopping at the store he went in leaving her in the car. A few minutes later he came back but Harley didn’t look at him when he got in the car and drove to the next stop. Coming to the next stop Gus looked at her
“Harley, honey we’re here I need you to come with me.” When she opened her eyes she saw they were at the cemetery. “Come on sweetie.” He replied as he got the roses then left the car and walked toward Nadine’s grave. Getting closer they saw a cemetery worker pulling weeds up at the grave next to Nadine’s. The man looked up and smiled when he saw Gus.
“Hey Mr. Aitoro, bringing Nadine her roses I see.” Gus nodded as he noticed Harley looking at him a little puzzled. “Well, I’ll leave you two alone.” “Thanks Tom.” Gus remarked as he lead Harley up closer.
“Hey mama, its Harley I miss you still.” She said as she knelt and fingered the flowers that already lay against the headstone. Gus knelt and placed the flowers against the headstone seeing the flowers Frank had laid there earlier. “Hey Nadine, its Gus, here are your flowers, I got red this time instead of yellow. They are from both me and Harley, we love you.”
“How did that worker know you honey?” Harley wondered.
He gave her a small smile, “Every year I bring your mother roses, most of the time it’s on this date. You know when I said at the dock that I was remembering – I was, I was remembering holding you as you cried after you found out your mom was gone and how I stayed with you that night.”
“Why?” Harley asked him. He looked at her knowing what she was asking
“Because on the anniversary of my father’s death you’ve put roses at his grave since we were 17. You’ve also put them there when I couldn’t and helped me through that day. So for the last 9 years I’ve done the same with Nadine, and I help you. She’s my mother-in-law baby and I love her even though I didn’t know her that well.” He kissed her softly, “I’m going to give you time alone ok?” She looked at him as he stood, “I love you.” Winking at her he walked several yards away and propped against a tree and waited. Several minutes later he wrapped his arm around her waist as she walked to him and they went to the car. “Now I can take you home and take care of you.” Gus replied as he kissed her temple then helped her in and drove home.
At the house…
He followed her in the house and after closing the door hugged her from behind resting his chin on her shoulder, “I want you to come upstairs in 5 minutes ok?” he asked. She turned in his arms
“Gus, you don’t have to d---.” Harley started to say but stopped when he placed a finger on her lips. She watched as his mouth replaced his finger with a kiss that spoke of tenderness yet possessiveness. Breaking the kiss he whispered, “Come up in 5 minutes.” Then he was gone.
In the bedroom, Gus stripped off his clothes then pulled on a pair of black sweatpants and went into the bathroom. Grabbing her favorite bubble bath he began to run the water as hot as he knew she could handle and poured in the bubble bath. Picking up a pitcher he placed it by the tub along with her shampoo then went in the bedroom. A few minutes later she came in and looked at him; going to her he led her to the bathroom. When she saw what he’d done tears flooded her eyes as she hugged him and then went in and closed the door.
A little later, Gus quietly walked in the bathroom with a book and after he closed the door sat down on the floor beside the tub and rubbed her arm.
“I can’t help but remember mama.” She said quietly as tears ran down her cheeks. “I know sweetheart.” He remarked.
“I'm sorry.” Harley said as she quickly tried to wipe at the tears. Moving to a kneeling position Gus tilted her face so she could see him.
“Harley, look at me babe.” She looked at him, “I’m here with you, like I was that night its okay.” He said as his hand went up to caress her cheek gently. Feeling her relax Gus sat again as he leaned against the sink and began to read his book as she took this time to relax.
After a little while Gus lay his book down and scooted around to where her head was resting and kissed her hair, “Baby let me wash your hair for you?” he whispered. She opened her eyes, “I love you.” He kissed her and then filled the pitcher with warm water then carefully poured it over her hair. Working the shampoo to lather in his hands he began to wash her hair; when she sighed he smiled, “feel good honey?”
“hmmm, you ran a bath for me and stayed with me as well did this for me that night when you stayed with me.” She replied
“I know.” He answered as he shampooed her hair a second time. “But this time I didn’t have to wait for you to put on a shirt before I did your hair.” He remarked laughing. Harley smiled as she remembered, “That’s right I made you turn around and close your eyes so I could put the shirt on since the bubbles were starting to disappear didn’t I?”
“Yeah.” He replied as he rinsed her hair. He checked the bath water and saw she was beginning to get cold. Standing he grabbed a towel
“Sweetheart, you’re beginning to get cold, let me help you out.” Taking her hand helped her out and wrapped her in the towel. Walking her to the bed she sat as he got her clothes and handed them to her. Once she changed she climbed in bed and lay down.
“You’re not going to sleep on top of the covers, like you did that night are you?” she asked Gus.
He smiled, “No, I’ll be right beside you this time.” He answered climbing under the covers and facing her. Pushing her hair behind her ear Gus saw the tears flood her eyes. “Harley, you stopped the tears earlier, you don’t have to stop them now… I know you miss her baby.”
Pulling her close he held her as the tears came. He held her as she fell asleep, “I love you Gus.” she whispered. He looked at her, “I love you too.” As Gus watched as she slept, only he knew how much she missed her mom because he knew how much she wanted her mom when she was little only to find her years later and have Nadine in her life for a while and then have her mom brutally taken from her. He knew how it felt to have a parent taken from you. That’s why he’d wanted today to be of Harley and her memories.
After watching her sleep for a little longer Gus held her tight as he drifted toward sleep with the woman he loved beside him.

Soulmates II... Chapter 3
This chapter takes place 2 weeks after the last. This chapter also indirectly kicks off Gus and Harley’s new case. (Both are still cops) You know me just as I did with Soulmates this story will also have twists and turns! So, to the readers, hang on for the ride and enjoy! I know this is not a great chapter but this was the only way to write it
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Gus and Harley had only been at their desks for a little while when Chief Franklin walked in. “Hey Guys, since its slow today I’m going to asks both of you to clean out the evidence room so we can have room for new stuff. Will you guys do that please?” he asked.
“Sure chief.” They replied in unison. With a nod the chief turned and left. Together Gus and Harley walked to the Evidence room and went in. Taking one look at the room they looked at each other, “Okay, honey you take that side.” Harley said pointing to the left. “And I’ll take the right.” She answered looking at Gus.
“Sounds good to me beautiful.” He said as Harley began to walk away. “It will be interes--.” Gus reached out and pulled on the back of her shirt stopping her words as well as her. Turning to face him he smiled as he tugged on her shirt again as he pulled her closer.
“If we are going to be up to our eyeballs in cleaning this room today, I want a kiss before we do, so come here and let me give my girl some sugar.” He remarked smiling. He wrapped his arm around her and kissed her until she was dizzy then hugged her tight, “I love you.” She hugged him, “I love you too, and will that do for now?” “Yeah it will let’s get to work.” He answered letting her go as they walked to opposite sides of the room.
“Sweetie, since we’ll be sorting we are going to need boxes. I’ll go down to maintenance and get boxes and markers for us.” Gus remarked as he headed to the door. “Okay.” Harley answered absently as she started going through old evidence. A few minutes later Harley jumped up when she heard banging, going to the door she opened it and had to stifle a giggle when she saw a stack of boxes with legs.
“Gus?” she questioned. “Hmmmm w-uld u elp me ere. He tried to mumble.
Grabbing the top two boxes she moved them only to see the markers carried in his mouth. Carrying the other boxes in Gus kicked the door shut and dropped the boxes where he stood and took the pens out of his mouth.
After getting boxes they went back to work sorting through evidence. They had already decided to keep the last two years boxed up in a corner there in the room and the rest would be boxed up and placed in storage in the basement. Getting to work they each worked in a companionable silence sometimes looking at each other knowing no words were necessary between them.
They had both been working for quiet awhile when Harley stopped to stretch. When she did she heard soft singing. She realized Gus was softly singing as he sorted through the files and evidence.
“Sometimes it's so hard to believe when the nights can be so long and faith gave me the strength and kept me going on
Smiling Harley didn’t bother to look over at him and went back to work listening to Gus as he sang.
You are the love of my life and I'm so glad you found me you are the love of my life baby, put your arms around me I guess this is how it feels when you finally find something real my angel in the dark you are my love the love of my life”
Harley knew he didn’t normally sing out loud except for when he was lost in thought or doing something like this. The only time she normally heard him was when he was singing to the boys. Harley soon began to be preoccupied with cleaning again as Gus was equally preoccupied on his side.
A little later, Harley looked at her watched and saw that it was a little after two o’clock. Standing she realized the room was really quiet. Beginning to wonder if Gus stepped out for a minute she called his name.
“Gus, honey?”
She heard a faint reply from somewhere in the room so she tried again, “Gus?” The reply came again, “I’m over here babe.” Still not able to see him she remarked, “Keep talking so I can follow your voice.” Harley followed his voice until she had found him. Seeing him she smiled he was sitting against the wall behind some boxes which had blocked his voice. “Sweetie its two o’clock do you want to stop and take a lunch break then we can keep going.” She wondered. Gus stood
“Yeah, I didn’t realize it was past lunch already, I’ll go get us something babe. I need to stretch anyway.” He said as he stepped out from the piled evidence they had yet to go through. “I’ll be back in a few minutes.” He said giving her a quick kiss before he walked out the door.
Going to the door she called officers in then went to the box she had just finished and labeled it. Turning she pointed to the three labeled boxes she had and the three that Gus had labeled and watched as the two officers piled the six boxes on dollies and wheeled them down to the basement for her. Harley began sorting again waiting for Gus to come back with lunch. He walked in and over to her and dropped down beside her before passing her lunch to her.
While they ate they both surveyed the room, “Well I think we will be finished with the major stuff by the time we leave today.” Gus stated. “Yeah, I agree.” She remarked. Eating in silence for a few minutes Harley glanced at him
“I heard you singing earlier.”
“You did? I didn’t realize I was singing.” He replied. “And you didn’t go screeching from the room? He said smiling. Harley lightly hit him on the arm, “You know I didn’t! I love you too.” She answered as they both went back to eating and then they talked about some of the old evidence they each had found.
Sometime shortly after they had eaten they both went back to work. Chief Franklin walked in a little later. When they saw him Gus and Harley stopped
“Wow guys, this looks great, you can actually walk around in here.” He stated laughing. “Where is everything though?” Harley stood, “All the evidence that’s for the last two years will be boxed up and placed in a corner here in the room all the rest of the evidence has been boxed, labeled and placed in the basement.”
The chief nodded, “Good I’ll let you go back to sorting.” He replied as Franklin closed the door behind him.
For the rest of the afternoon, they worked at sorting, packing, and labeling the evidence and moving the boxes out that went to the basement.
Gus glanced at his watch and saw that it was 4:30 so he stood and went to Harley. Running his hand slightly over her hair; she looked up, “Sweetie its 4:30 why don’t we go to the office and close up and go home.” He replied helping her stand, “Good idea.” Together they walked out the door. After they had closed up the office and started to walk out of the office Harley realized she didn’t have her purse. Harley stopped, “I’ forgot my purse babe, I left it in the evidence room; I’ll get it and meet you in the car.” Gus nodded as he headed out and she walked in the evidence room.
After looking around for a minute she saw it. After she picked it up just as something else caught her eye. Reaching over she picked up the small pouch. When Harley looked in it she saw a small picture and pulled it out.
The picture was black and white and of a baby of what she guessed a month or so old. Turning it over Harley thought there might be some information but what she saw made her freeze
N.James Augustino
Soulmates II... Chapter 4
Harley stood frozen as she stared at the picture, flipping it over she read the name again, N. James Augustino. Without realizing it a single tear fell down her cheek. Wiping at her cheek she placed the pouch in her purse and headed back to the car.
“Honey did you find --?” Gus started to say as he looked at her when she climbed in but seeing her face stopped his words. She was pale, shaky and he could see where a tear had slipped down her cheek.
“Sweetie, what is it?” Gus questioned. Shaking her head she didn’t answer as she laid her head on the back of the seat.
He had just started driving when he felt Harley move next to him and lay her head on his shoulder. As she laid a hand on his thigh Gus moved to where he could put his arm around her as he drove. When Gus glanced at her he saw she had her eyes closed and her silence worried him.
Continuing home Gus began think to himself, “Baby what happened when you went back in there… “Did Franklin tell you something? You were spooked that’s for sure, like you’d seen a ghost or something.” He hated feeling helpless. When they got home Harley got out and went in without stopping to wait for Gus.
After, getting their things and locking the car he followed her in the house. Not seeing her in the family room Gus dropped their stuff on the table and went to the bedroom. Seeing her clothes scattered on the floor he stopped and listened for a minute realizing she was in the shower. Picking up her clothes Gus hung them in the closet then changed into sweatpants and t-shirt and sat down to wait for her.
Fifteen minutes later he heard the door open and watched as she walked into the bedroom. Seeing her face he went to her; taking the towel from her hand and grabbing her brush from the dresser he led her to the bed. Pushing her gently down Gus climbed behind her and started to towel dry her hair. Once he’d carefully dried her hair he began to brush through it. Feeling her lean against him he put the brush down and rested his arms around her shoulders.
“Won’t you tell me what’s got you upset Coop?” Gus asked quietly.
Resting her cheek against his arm she thought to herself, “How do I tell him?” Even as she said, “I need to be with you right now.” She said turning and giving him a gentle but deep kiss. Laying her down he shed his clothes and then slowly undid the belt of her bathrobe. Watching her for a minute Gus smiled then claimed her lips with his. Letting her hands feel his body she lost herself in his kisses… his touch… his love.
Gus felt when she let herself go and all he could think was “love her” so his kisses and caresses showed how much he loved and cherished her. Each feeling the desire take over the other Harley looked into Gus’s eyes, “I love you” she said when she saw him smile; then closed her eyes. Hearing his voice her eyes opened
“Look at me Harley.” He whispered as the passion for each other ruled them both.
Later as they lay side by side as their body’s cooled Gus touched her face lovingly. “Sweetheart, talk to me and tell me what upset you.” She looked at him, “Can we eat first then I’ll explain.” He nodded as they got dressed.
Taking her hand he smiled, “I’ll make us a quick dinner then we can talk okay?”
She nodded and kissed his cheek and together they went down to the kitchen.
While Gus fixed them dinner Harley sat at the table watching him as he worked. She knew she needed to tell him but she wasn’t sure how. As Gus sat her plate down in front of her he saw that she was staring off into space. Kissing the top of her head, he said, “Baby its ready.” Looking up she smiled; he sat down and began to eat. As Gus ate he watched to see as she slowly ate but mostly played with her food. When he finished he slowly began to rub her arm wanting have contact with her to hopefully let her know she could tell him anything. Once she was done she looked at him
“Can we go upstairs?” she asked quietly. He nodded as they stood and walked out of the kitchen.
Reaching the stairs Harley stopped and looked around until she saw her purse. Letting go of Gus’s hand she went and got it even as he looked at her strangely. Taking his hand they went to the bedroom and together climbed in bed. As Harley propped herself again the headboard Gus sat Indian style facing her.
Harley was quiet for several minutes and wouldn’t look at Gus. Watching her he began to get a little concerned.
“Babe, you’re beginning to scare me, what is it?” he said slowly.
Looking at him she took his hand, “I don’t mean to scare you sweetheart I’m just trying to figure out how to say this to you.”
“Just tell me—you know we can get through anything together.” He remarked as he leaned in and kissed her cheek. She nodded as she reached out and ran her hand lovingly over his face. Taking a deep breath she began.
“You know when I went back to get my purse today?” Gus nodded waiting for her to continue, “Well, it took me a minute to find it and when I did my eye caught something that was against the wall so I picked it up.” She said taking the pouch out of her purse to show him.
“I didn’t know what it might be; I thought it was a piece of evidence we had forgotten so I looked in it, Gus what’s in it is why I was so quiet tonight. It’s something you need to see.” She said passing him the pouch.
Carefully taking it from her Gus opened it and pulled out the picture of the baby. After looking at it for a minute he looked at her, “It’s a baby picture.” She nodded, “The baby looks to be about a month old Gus.”
“Okay sweetie so this is a picture of a missing baby, but it’s a black and white photo so it’s and old picture. Do you want us to try and find this person?” Gus asked.
Harley nodded, “Gus I think we better, turn the picture over.” Gus turned it over then dropped it as if it were on fire as he read the back. Whispering the words he said them again, “N. James Augustino.”
“Is this Joe when he was a baby?” Harley asked. Gus shook his head, “No I saw dad’s baby pictures and he didn’t have one like this.” He answered. “Gus, honey was Joseph your dad’s first or middle name?”
“Middle.” Harley’s eyes got big, “I didn’t know that.” She said.
“Yeah his full name was Thomas Joseph Augustino. He didn’t like Thomas so by the time he was on the force the Thomas had been dropped; and he just when by Joseph or Joe. Mom told me one day when I'd seen something dad had signed and he'd signed it T. Joseph Augustino. Crawling under the covers to be next to her Gus held her as he looked at the baby’s picture again. Laying his cheek against the top of her head she felt a tear land in her hair
“Honey?” she said softly looking up at him. “Why me babe? First I find out that Joe and Angela aren’t my real parents then I find out that Alan is my father and now this.” He says wearily waving the baby picture. “If this isn’t my dad, then who is he?”
Harley laid her head against his heart and just held him, “Who is he sweetheart? Gus repeated.
“I don’t know Gus, but we’ll find out, I promise.” She answered. “We’ll find out together.
As Gus lay Harley down and held her as she fell asleep, he watched her for a while since he couldn’t seem to stop thinking of that picture.
Who are you? And where are you…
Soulmates II... Chapter 5
Harley sat at her desk watching Gus as he worked. She could see the worry lines on his forehead as he tried not to think about that picture she’d showed him two weeks ago but she knew he couldn’t.
“Stop” she said as she got up and went to close the door to their office.
He looked up, “Huh?”
“I should have never have showed you that picture honey.” Harley said as she felt tears rush in her eyes.
Seeing how quickly her eyes brightened with tears surprised Gus so he sat up and reached a hand out for her, “Sweetie, what are you talking about?”
“I’ve been watching you, and I know when you can’t concentrate Gus. You’ve been working on the same report for 2 hours.” “It was a complicated case baby.” He replied rubbing his thumb back and forth across her hand.
“Don’t give me that!” she said loudly. Gus had never seen her quite like this. "Baby, calm down." he said standing and hugging her.
She blew out a breath, “You’re wondering who the little boy was. And where is he?” Harley said quietly. Gus slowly leaned back in his chair and as he looked at her ran a hand wearily over his face.
“Okay Harley, I can’t help it but yeah I am. If that baby picture has anything to do with the Augustino part of my family I want to know; but I don’t think I’m ready to dig in dad’s past without a lot of memories. Plus honey what if I find something about him.”
“Sweetheart you’ll never know until you investigate. I’ll be by your side every step.” Harley said as she sat in his lap as his arms went around her.
“What are we going to tell Franklin about this?” Gus asked looking into her eyes.
“The truth honey and see if he’ll give us the okay to investigate until you have answers.”
“I love you, you know that?” Gus whispered against her lips as he gave her a tender kiss.
She nodded as she kissed him back then leaned over and called the chief to see if he could come to their office for a minute. After she hung up she stood and walked behind him, laying a hand on his shoulder just as Franklin walked in.
“Guys what’s up?” he wondered as he closed the door and sat on the corner of Gus’s desk.
“Chief, I found some strange evidence the other day.” Harley remarked.
“What do you mean?”
"The day when we were cleaning the evidence room, right before Gus and I left for the day we were locking up the office when I realized my purse was still w/ the evidence so I went back to get it. Something caught my eye so I picked it up it was a pouch with a picture in it.” Franklin stopped her, “Where is it?” he asked. Turning Harley went to her desk and pulled it out of the drawer. Seeing it he told her to continue, “After seeing what was in it I took it home to show Gus, because I thought he needed to see what was in it.” She finished.
“Okay wait, why did you need to see it?” he said looking at Gus. Looking at Harley then at Franklin, Gus waved toward the pouch, “See for yourself Chief.”
Taking the pouch from Harley Franklin opened it and pulled the picture out and looked at it. Confused, he looked up. “Turn it over chief.” Harley said quietly as she wrapped her arm around Gus’s waist as he stared ahead.
Seeing the name Franklin’s head snapped up, “Augustino?” Gus nodded, “Yes sir now you see why Harley said I needed to see it.”
“Who is this?”
“I don’t know it’s not my father.” Gus said quietly. “But you want to find out who it is?” Franklin stated. “Yes Chief I do, I need to find out.”
Taking a look at the picture once again the Chief stood, “Consider this a missing persons’ case and it can be yours and Harley’s.”
Harley stepped away, “You mean it sir?”
Franklin nodded as he handed the picture to her, “Yes, until further notice or unless I need you elsewhere this is the case that you two will work on. You guys check in with me but otherwise Gus take the time.”
Stopping at the door on his way out Franklin turned, “I hope for your sake Gus there’s an answer to this picture whatever it turns out to be, Good Luck!” he said as he softly shut the door behind him.
Kissing his cheek Harley said, “I’ll be right beside you the whole time; but you know what we have to do next baby.” He nodded as she followed him out of the station.
They stopped and stood there as Gus gripped Harley’s hand and stared. “Hi Dad its Gus and I brought Harley with me. I found something out today that’s about your side of the family and I’m not sure if I can get through this investigation. I don’t want to dad but I have to know who the baby is, I know its not you. Will you help me and Harley dad?” Gus asked even though he knew there would be no answer.
At the curb a car pulled up and the person got out and walked to the other side of the car. Looking up the person saw the couple at the grave and stared at the man for a minute. With a soft sigh he reached toward the couple then stopping his hand in mid air let it fall. Turning without a thought he got back in the car and drove away.
As Gus and Harley stood at Joe’s grave Harley pulled the picture out of her pocket and passed it to her husband.
Together they stared at it both wondering about this baby boy…
Soulmates II... Chapter 6
He looked over at her; eyes turned stormy as he watched Harley cooking dinner. “What next step do I take baby?” he asked even though she didn’t know either. As he watched her, Gus didn’t know what he would have ever done had she not come in to his life?
“I’d still be the chain smoking, coffee drinker, FBI agent with a vendetta.” He thought to himself. He loved her with all his heart and couldn’t help remember what he’d said to her on their wedding day.
Harley, beautiful I love you with all my heart and you will forever be my moon and stars. I remember when I first saw you—that little girl defending herself against the street bully. I never thought that on that day I rescued you; that you would rescue me as well—from myself. We have been a constant support to each other through our lives. Somehow I think I knew the first time I kissed you when we were 16 that deep down in my heart; I’d always be committed to you. Know now that as I join my life with yours you will always be my love and heart until we are parted by death.
Not realizing Harley had called his name until she’d caressed his cheek he looked up.
“Where were you sweetie?” she wondered, “Were you thinking about the next step to take now that you have the okay from the Chief to investigate?
“No, actually I was thinking about us and my vows to you.”
“You were, why?”
“Yeah, I was because I know I couldn’t get through this without you.” He stated as he kissed her cheek as she sat down to eat. After they ate he pulled the picture out and looked at it then looked up
“I know the boys are with their fathers’ tonight but—.” Gus started to say but stopped shaking his head.
“But you need to see them don’t you?” she finished for him. He nodded, “Come on then.” Harley said grabbing his jacket and helping him into it before pulling her own
They waited at Rick and Mel’s door as they heard the door being opened.
“Hey Guys!” Mel said as she stood holding Leah. “Hey Mel, were sorry to come by but I needed to see ---.” Gus started to say but she stopped him, “Rick’s with Jude in the den; go on in.” She said once she’d seen how tight he was holding to Harley. Mel closed the door once it was just her and Harley.
“Oh Mel, Leah’s a doll.” Harley said smiling.
“Would you like to hold her?” When Harley nodded she took the baby as they walked in the den where the guys were. What the women saw had them both smiling as they watched two grown men and a little boy all in a circle with their feet touching rolling a ball to each other.
“Let’s go in the kitchen and give the guys time.” Mel suggested. Harley nodded and followed her to the kitchen.
“Is he okay?” Mel asked nodding to where Gus was in the den.
“Yeah he will be, he just had a tough day and seeing the boys makes him feel better.” Harley remarked. “Oh so you guys have seen Zach already?” Mel said setting a cup in front of Harley as she sat down.
“Not yet, Gus wanted to see Jude first.” After about an hour, Gus walked to the kitchen and stopped when he saw Harley. Smiling he just stood looking at her with Leah asleep on her shoulder. With a strange feeling she was being watched Harley looked toward the door and saw Gus standing there smiling at her. Pushing himself off the door jamb he went to her and carefully took Leah from her as he said, “Rick’s getting Jude ready for bed if you want to go kiss him before we leave.
“Can I hold her Mel?” he asked as she nodded and Harley started upstairs. While he was holding Leah Gus just watched her sleep. “She’s beautiful Mel.” He whispered. “Thanks Gus.” A few minutes later Rick and Harley came downstairs, “You ready hon?” Harley wondered. He nodded as he passed the baby to Mel then said their goodbyes and left heading toward the Mansion.
Once in the mansion they headed to the study where Phillip was and Zach was playing. When Zach saw Gus he jumped up and ran to Gus just as Gus bent to catch him.
“Hey little man.” Gus said as he hugged Zach. “Harley what are you doing here?” Phillip asked. “We wanted to say goodnight before Zach went to bed.” “Well, you could have used the phone.” Phillip stated.
“We won’t stay long Phillip.” Gus replied still hugging Zach. Without a word Harley sat on the couch and watched as Gus took the time he needed.
After they got in the car Gus just sat in the driver seat staring out the window.
“Baby, what is it?” she asked. When he didn’t answer her and kept staring she slowly began rubbing his back. Turning to face her she saw a tear roll down his cheek.
“Harley, seeing the boys tonight made me realize what I have to do.” He replied as he pulled her to him and hugged her tightly. “I’m right here baby.” She whispered into the soft skin of his neck.
As Gus drove closer Harley realized where he was going and took his hand in hers. After getting out and going in they stopped as he saw the man in front of him.
“Ray?” Harley whispered.
Turning he smiled as he walked to them. “Hi Harley it’s nice to see you. Gus you too.” He stated then saw Gus’s face and looked back to Harley.
“We need to see Lucia if she’s free.” Understanding Ray nodded, “She is, I’ll let her know you are here.” He replied as he left.
“Sweetheart, I can’t.” Gus said softly. “Gus, look at me honey?” Harley said as she took his face in her hand and turned it so she could see his eyes.
“I know this won’t be easy for you but we’re together and I’ll be right here.” “I haven’t seen her since I found out--.” He started to say but stopped when he heard
“Hello Harley, Gus.” Lucia said as she stopped at the doorway. Gus stared at her as she walked toward them.
“Ray said you needed to see me about something, why don’t we sit down.” She suggested as she led them over to one of the church pews.
Lucia slid in the pew then Gus and Harley followed to sit on Gus’s other side. “We just need to ask you a few questions if that’s okay?” Harley asked.
“Of Course.” Lucia replied
“Since you were friends with my mo--.” Gus started to say as his voice died then stopped before he looked at Harley for strength then tried again.
“Since you were friends with my mom and dad we thought you maybe could tell us something about this.” Gus said as he slowly pulled the picture out of his pocket. As he did Harley noticed his hand shaking and laid her hand on his as he past the picture to Lucia.
Taking the picture Lucia looked at it closely for a minute even as Gus studied her. “Who is this?” she asked. “Turn it over.” Harley said. When she did her eyes flew to theirs.
“Who is it Lucia?” Gus said. “Did you ever hear my parents talk about another baby?” She looked up wide-eyed at her son. “No, I never heard this name at all Gus.”
“You mean to tell me of all the times you were with Momma and Dad they never said anything?!” Gus all but yelled at her.
“Excuse us for a minute.” Harley stated as she took Gus’s hand and led him to the door. Pushing him to lean against the door he rested his head and closed his eyes. Harley slowly began caressing his face and neck on both sides as she talked to him.
“Sweetheart, take a deep breath okay.” She said as she watched him take the breath. “I’m sorry honey.” He said quietly. “It’s okay.”
“I don’t think I can finish.” He replied as he stroked her cheek. “Do you want me to finish talking with her?” Harley wondered.
Gus nodded, “I’ll wait right here.” Harley nodded as she went back to Lucia. “Is he alright Harley?” “No, this isn’t easy for him. Since you saw Joe and Angela quite a bit, did they have something they kept family records in like a family Bible or something like that?” Harley asked.
From the door Gus watched as Harley and Lucia talked for a few more minutes then they stood and Harley walked to him.
“We can go honey.” She said he nodded as they turned to leave. Gus looked at Lucia one more time then said, “I’ll be back baby.” He went to Lucia as Harley waited silently.
Reaching her she looked at her son, “Yes Nicholas.”
“I’m sorry about before. I didn’t mean to.” He said softly.
“It’s okay.” Lucia answered as she smiled.
He looked at her for a minute before he leaned in and gently kissed her cheek then whispered again “I’m sorry.” Before walking back to Harley.
“Let’s go home honey.” He suggested. As they turned to leave they stopped just before they ran into someone.
“Oh I’m sorry, excuse me.” They said as the man looked at them and made eye contact with them for a minute. “It’s quite alright.” He said as they left.
Outside Gus and Harley climbed in the car and headed home. “Are you okay Harley?” he asked as she leaned back. “Yeah I’m fine just really tired.”
Soulmates II... Chapter 7
Rolling over in bed the next morning Gus looked at Harley as she slept. He loved watching her sleep because it was peaceful to him. Skimming his finger over her cheek he smiled when she sighed.
After watching her for a little longer he couldn’t take it anymore; he just had to kiss her. Propping up on his arm he leaned over and placed light kisses on her cheek and then a gentle one on her lips. Very slowly he watched her wake up.
“Morning beautiful.” He whispered. “Hi, that was a nice way to wake up.” She replied smiling.
“I know you’re still tired but I couldn’t wait another minute to kiss you.” Gus remarked as he kissed her again. “I have to get up anyway.” She answered as she pushed Gus off her. He rolled off her and watched as she swung her legs over the side and stood up. As Harley stood up a wave of dizziness hit her and she started to sway. From where Gus sat watching he saw when she started to sway and he jumped up and went to her and steadied her.
“Whoa honey, what’s wrong?” he asked as he helped her sit back down. As he knelt down in front of her she smiled, “I’m okay I guess I just stood up to fast.”
“Are you sure?” Gus asked watching her. “Yes sweetie.” She said as she started to get up and he helped her stand and walk to the bathroom. When she opened the door he walked her back to the bed.
“Honey, I want you to take it easy today okay, you were so tired last night and I can tell you still are. So in case you have some type of bug just rest today and let me take care of you okay?”
“But I was going to help you today?” she replied.
“Well I was going to stay here today and do some investigating through the stuff I have here of my parents. So, just rest and sleep and I can look through the stuff and we can pick it apart after you rest… deal?” he asked.
“Deal.” She answered as she lay down.
“How about this darlin’… I’ll stay with you until you fall asleep then when you wake up I’ll make us something to eat? Gus asked.
“That sounds good.” Harley stated as Gus climbed in bed behind her and wrapped his arms around her.
“Good, now you rest honey.”
As Gus saw Harley’s eyes close he slowly began to run his fingers over her hair until he felt her breathing steady and become even. Carefully he climbed out of bed covered her up then kissed her cheek. Grabbing some clothes he quietly closed the door and walked to the boys’ bathroom so he could take a shower without waking Harley up.
Coming out of the bedroom after putting his clothes in the laundry basket he left the door cracked so he could her Harley in case she needed him. He walked to the closet and pulled out the garbage bag that he kept that still had things of Joe and Angela’s in it. He smiled ruefully as he stared at the bag thinking he should change how he keeps their things but when he moved in that was all he had to carry stuff in.
Taking the bag downstairs he went to the couch and slowly began looking through the things. Gus had just opened the bag when the phone rang. Grabbing the phone before it woke Harley, he answered.
“Hello.”
“Gus its me.” The voice said. Hearing who it was Gus stopped, “Zach what’s wrong little man.”
“I had a bad dream last night and I’m still scared, I wanna come home.” “Tell me about the dream and maybe I can help take away the scary.” Gus remarked. Listening he talked to him but when Zach said he still didn’t like the dream Gus asked, “Buddy I’m sorry did you tell Daddy or Grandpa about the dream?” “Yeah but I need you.” Zach said. “Okay can I talk to Grandpa for a minute?”
“Gus?” Alan said.
“Yeah, hi I’m sorry he wants to cut his visit short. He said. “If he needs you he needs you, I’ll bring him by myself as soon as we get his things together.” Alan replied.
Gus hit a pillow when he said, “Zach said Phillip wasn’t there?”
“No, he had a meeting this morning, we’ll be there soon.” Alan replied as he hung up.
An hour later, Alan stuck his head in the partially open door, “Gus?”
He looked up as they walked in and as soon as Zach saw him held his arms out. “Ahh come here little man.” Gus replied as the little boy buried himself in his chest. Forgetting about Alan Gus walked to the couch and sat down. Alan moved away as he began to watch the man he knew was his son.
Rubbing the little boy’s back Zach began to tell him about the dream. “It was really scary Gus.” “I know it was… I’ll tell you something my daddy used to tell me every time I had a bad dream.”
Zach looked up, “What?”
“He would tell me to imagine that I had a big batch of balloons with long strings and every time I had a bad dream to take it and roll it up and tie it to the balloon and blow it away.”
Gus looked down at Zach as he kissed his temple then said, “That’s what you and I are going to do okay?” Zach nodded.
“Here, little man you hold the balloon.” Gus replied pretending to take a balloon from the air and passing it to the little boy. Gus then looked at the top of Zach’s head and pretended to pick something up.
“See buddy here’s the dream.” He said holding it up, “now we’ll roll it up like this.” Gus said pretending to roll something long ways. “Now you keep holding the balloon while I tie the dream up ok?” Zach nodded. Gus tied the dream to the string. When he finished he took the balloon and looked at Zach. “Now you blow it away little man.” Gus and Alan watched as Zach blew the pretend balloon away.
“All gone buddy, all better.” Gus said as he began to softly sing the little boy to sleep. Alan with a sad smile turned and left quietly shutting the door without a word. "You are a wonderful stepfather son." Alan said as he looked at the door one more time.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Gus gently laid Zach on the couch beside him and once he’d covered Zach; began to look through the bag. “Okay momma, dad who is this baby?” he wondered out loud as he pulled his dad’s favorite book out and lay it on the coffee table. Then he saw the scarf Angela always loved and slowly looked at it as he held it close.
“I miss you momma.” Gus whispered.
Laying it carefully on his dad’s book he continued to search. After he’d taken almost everything out and searched through it he saw another book at the bottom when he heard from behind him
“Gus?” she said quietly as he turned
“What’s he doing here?” Harley asked motioning to Zach. “He had a scary dream last night and was still scared this morning and wanted to come home. So Alan brought him home.” Gus looked at the clock, “Almost two hours ago, honey.” Harley nodded even as he stood and walked to her and caressed her cheek. “You look better sweetheart. Zach’s out let me take him upstairs then I’ll fix us something.”
She nodded as he went upstairs and then came back down and went to the kitchen.
“How are you feeling, did sleeping help?” Gus wondered as he kissed her.
“Yeah it did, but I’m still a little tired, but I want to help you.” Harley replied. “Okay, we can eat while we look.” He said as they went to the family room and he began to tell her what some of the things he’d found were.
“What’s this babe?” Harley asked picking up the book that was Joe’s. Gus smiled, “That’s a book that was my dad’s favorite when he was a boy and when I was little he used to read it to me.” She grinned when she read the title: “Tales of Winnie the Pooh.”
“Aww that’s cute honey.”
“I had just found this when you came in.” he replied pulling the second book out and passing it to Harley. She opened the book and was surprised at what she saw.
“Sweetheart, look at this!”
He turned, “What?” Gus asked looking down and was surprised to see the book open and where the pages were to be there was a hollowed out compartment. Taking the book from Harley he lifted out what was inside.
Harley saw his hands shaking and laying hers over his; helped him take the bag out. Gus closed his eyes as he grabbed for Harley and held on as he read the piece of tape that was across the front of the bag.
“What’s its say?” Harley wondered watching the pain come in Gus’s eyes.
“Baby boy #1 and Baby boy #2…

Soulmates II... Chapter 8
Editor’s note: for This part plays off the early history I created in Soulmates)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Almost as if in slow motion Harley watched as Gus stood and walked taking heavy step after heavy step to the front door and opened it.
“Gus, what are you thinking?” she asked when he didn’t move.
“Honestly? The first thing that ran through my head, I have to go ask Dad.” He answered softly. When he looked up she stood and started toward him. Reaching him she wrapped an arm around him even as she pushed the door shut.
“Oh, sweetheart, I’m sor--.” She started to say and when he looked at her he saw her go pale just as she broke out of his arms and ran for the stairs. Following her, Gus reached the bathroom just as she got sick. Standing behind her he held her hair out of the way with one hand as he gently rubbed up and down her back with the other.
“Stay still baby.” He replied when she reached for his hand to let him know she wanted to stand. Grabbing a wash cloth from the closet he wet it then carefully helped her stand. He gently washed her face and neck and waited till she rinsed her mouth out then helped her back down stairs.
“Harley, are you okay?” he asked. “Yeah I’m better, where were we?” she wondered. “I was going to look at the bracelet.” Gus remarked as he opened the bag and took it out. He carefully looked at the small beaded bracelet and saw a piece of paper wrapped around it. Before looking closer at the bracelet, Gus removed the paper handing the bracelet to Harley as he read it which said, “Bracelet in his baby book.”
“What’s that mean?” he whispered even as Harley was examining the bracelet. “Honey look?” she said and he looked over as she pointed out the tiny blocks that spelled, NATHAN.
“So this baby, whoever he was or is; is Nathan.” Gus stated. Harley looked up, “Sweetie, daddy may recognize this type of bracelet, why don’t I go see him and find out what he can tell me.”
“Are you sure you feel up to it?”
“Yeah, I want to get some air.” Harley said. Gus took her hand, “Okay, do you have a problem if we call a sitter?” Because now that I have a name I want to get to the courthouse and check the birth records.” He said as he gently ran his fingers over her cheek.
“No, go ahead.” She said as she stood. “Go ahead baby, I’ll call Sarah and leave after she gets here.”
Smiling she blew him a kiss after she picked up the bag with the bracelet and grabbing her keys left as he went to call Sarah.
Little did Gus know but Harley had another mission she had to do.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Harley sat waiting for Dr. Sedwick and when she came in she smiled.
“Hello. Dr. Sedwick, thank you for fitting me in.”
“Not a problem, Harley what can I help you with?” Dr. Sedwick asked.
“Well for the last few weeks I’ve been tired and have had bouts with Dizziness and today I got sick, I think I might be pregnant?” she replied.
“Have you been sick before today?” the doctor asked. When Harley shook her head the doctor nodded, “Okay Harley we’ll draw blood and run a pregnancy test.” She replied as she turned and got what she needed then took some blood. After that was done Dr. Sedwick smiled, “I’ll put a rush on the results Harley.”
“Thank You, just call my cell when they come in I need to go to Company and see my dad for a minute.” Harley said.
“I’ll call you when they come back.” The doctor replied.
While Harley had been running her errands Gus was looking through Birth Records.
“Okay Nathan who are you?” he mumbled as he looked through the records he knew his birth certificate would be in.
After an hour passed he realized there was no Nathan Augustino born the year he was so he began to look in the previous years.
Gus wanted to give up, but something was nagging at him to keep going so he continued until he’d reached the year his dad was born 1945.
As he flipped through the records he came to his dad’s birth certificate and as he read it thought of his dad.
THOMAS JOESPH AUGUSTINO B. APRIL 18, 1945 Time:4:05 p.m.
PARENTS: FATHER Michael A. Augustino. MOTHER Rosa A. Augustino
Gus smiled as he looked at the next record but what he saw made his heart stop
NATHAN JAMES AUGUSTINO B. APRIL 18, 1945 Time: 4:08 p.m.
PARENTS: FATHER Michael A. Augustino. MOTHER Rosa A. Augustino
“What the hell?” Gus whispered to himself.
Slowly he picked up the birth certificates and went to make a copy and head home.
Across town Harley waited as Dr. Sedwick looked at her blood test results. “Harley your instincts were right?”
“What?” she replied astonished?
“Your blood work came back positive, you’re pregnant.” Dr. Sedwick replied. “Congratulations.”
“Thank you! I’ll call and make an appointment tomorrow.” Harley stated smiling. After talking with the doctor a few more minutes Harley left. As she passed by the gift shop she went in and a few minutes later came out carrying a small box that was wrapped. Later when she came through the front door she saw Gus lying on the couch with his eyes closed. Walking over she knelt by him and caressed his stomach. Opening his eyes he saw her smile, “Hey ho---.”
“Shhh…” he interrupted as he sat up and pulled her up beside him and into a tight hug.
“What is it sweetie?” Harley asked as she kissed the softness of his neck.
“What did your dad say?”
“Well he said those bracelets were used during the 1940’s and 1950’s he showed me his bracelet from his baby book and his was like Nathan’s.”
Gus ran his hands over his face, “You found something didn’t you?” Harley asked.
“Oh yeah and you won’t believe it.” He replied he told her how he’d started with his birth certificate and when he didn’t find anything he worked his way back to his dad.
Taking one paper off the coffee table he handed it to Harley and she saw it was Joe’s birth certificate. The certificate behind dads' is what threw me off guard and showed her the second paper.
When she saw the name her eyes widened, “Your dad had a brother?” she wondered. “Not just a brother hon… look at the times.” He remarked.
She looked at the times and her eyes flew to his, “Your dad… Your dad?”
“Was a twin.” Gus finished for her.
They both sat in silence for a while when Harley touched his arm, “I wish I could have met your dad.” “Me to babe.” Gus said as he didn’t bother to stop the tears. Knowing why he was crying she gently touched his face until he looked at her, “We’ll find Nathan sweetheart, we’ll find him.”
“I can’t do this alone.” Gus stated as kissed the palm of her hand. “You won’t be alone.”
Harley looked at her purse that was sitting on the coffee table and knew this was the time to give Gus what she had bought for him.
Leaning over she pulled the small box out, “I have something I want to give you Gus.”
“What?” Gus asked.
“I ran another errand while I was out and got this for you.” Harley said passing him the small box.
She watched as he opened the box and he saw what was inside. “Beautiful, what are these for?” he asked looking at the pair of pink booties and the pair of blue booties.
When she didn’t say anything he stared at her then as comprehension dawned on him he looked at the booties again
“Are you… Are we… going to have a baby?” he asked amazed.
When she nodded tears flooded his eyes as he pulled her into his arms and his lips captured hers.
When they broke the kiss Gus gently looked at her still flat tummy for a minute then gently lay his hand there where his child lay inside the love of his life.
“I can’t believe we are having a baby?” Gus said softly. She smiled as he held the booties in his hand. She smiled as she leaned in and kissed him, “I love you, I have since we were kids.” when she pulled back he was smiling, “I love you too beautiful.” He said as he lay down again and pulled her with him where she was laying in front of him.
“What about Zach?” Harley asked.
“He’s okay; he’s upstairs playing; besides I just want to hold you for a little while.”

Soulmates II... Chapter 9
As stated early this will now begin to play off the history they have from Soulmates. This takes place several weeks after the last chapter. Since I’m not sure of Gus’s birthday I am picking a day LOL. They have already told the boys about the baby. This will be a little different than my other chapters.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Watching from the kitchen door Harley stared at the man sitting on the couch. She couldn’t tell what he was thinking but she knew he was staring off into space. Smiling she went to him and ran her fingers through his hair. “Where were you?” she asked when he looked at her.
“Well, I had come in here to get my date book to mark the due date down but then I got sidetracked thinking about when it must have happened.” He answered with a silly smile on his face.
“You were thinking about the night after we’d cleaned out the evidence room?” she asked. “Yep.” He replied. “You’re crazy Aitoro.” She answered laughing.
“Only for you Mrs. Aitoro, only for you.” He said as she watched him pick up his date book and flip to November then draw a heart around the 18th and write in Baby Aitoro. Taking the book from him; Harley flipped back to April before she looked up and said, “Baby your birthday is next week on the 16th what do you want to do?”
“I was thinking about that, this is going to sound strange but I want a picnic with our family and friends honey.” Gus said.
Harley looked at him, “Are you sure?” She asked picking up a note pad and pen. When he nodded she continued, “Let’s make a list of who you want there so I can call them.”
“Okay.” He remarked than thought for a minute as he watched her write on the list Daddy, Frank, Marina and then he said, “Ross Blake (the kids) Edmund and Cassie, Chief Franklin, Greg, and Mike from the station, Josh and Reva, Rick, Mel and Leah
“Okay honey, what about Alan and Alex? If you want them there I’ll ask them.” Harley said carefully. He looked at her, “After all he’s put us through not to mention how he treats you.”
“Sweetie this is your day not mine, if you want him there I’ll ask him.” She replied. “But I want you to be able to relax with me on that day Harley.” he said shaking his head no as he walked away. “Who else?” she asked. Leaning against the wall; Gus tilted his head back and closed his eyes. Harley waited.
“Lucia.” He said quietly as she got up and went to him.
“I can’t leave her out Harley. I try and forget that she’s here because I’m afraid she’ll leave, but I can’t explain why I want her there but I do.” Slipping her hand in his he looked at her as a tear slipped down his face. “We’ll ask her babe.” Harley said. “Can we go now?” he wondered. She nodded, “If you want to.”
As they came in the church they saw Lucia lighting a candle. When she turned she was surprised to see them. “Gus, Harley, what are you doing here?” she asked.
“We had something we needed to ask you.” Harley replied. “What is it?” Lucia wondered as she stared at Gus for a minute then looked at Harley. “As you know Gus’s birthday is on the 16th and we are planning a picnic to celebrate.” Harley replied and Lucia nodded. Gus spoke finally from beside Harley, “I’d like you to be there.”
Lucia looked at him surprised, “Are you sure Nicholas?” she asked. He nodded. “I’d love to come, thank you.” “It will be at the house but I’ll call you with the time okay?” Harley asked. Lucia nodded as they talked for a minute then said there goodbyes.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Gus’s Birthday…
Gus felt the bed give and opened his eyes as he watched Harley run to the bathroom. Wiping the sleep from them he waited for her to come back to bed. When she did he reached for her
“You okay?”
She nodded as she laid her head on his shoulder and looked at him. “Sorry I woke you up like that today.” She replied. He turned his head toward her and softly kissed her. Placing a hand on her tummy he said “Its okay sweetheart, I love you and this is one of the best birthday presents I could have wished for.” Before he could say anything they heard the bedroom door open and watched as the boys came running in and climbed on the bed.
Zach inched his way up Gus’s chest and as Gus wrapped his arms around him; Zach looked at him, “Happy Birthday Gus.” he said as he hugged him tight. Jude who was sitting in front of Harley crawled over and Gus made room as he laid his head on Gus’s shoulder. “Happy Birthday from me too Gus.” Jude said. He laughed as he looked at the boys, “Thank you guys that means a lot.” He replied as he kissed the tops of their heads. When he looked up at Harley she was smiling.
“Get over here mommy.” Gus requested as he held out a hand. Taking it Harley scooted closer as she ran her fingers over his hair as they all snuggled closer.
“This is the way I wanted to start my birthday… with my family.” Gus replied as he looked at the two little boys that he loved and thought of as his own and the love of his life and their child.” They all stayed like that for another hour before he said he’d help the boys get dressed while she showered.
A little later Gus came in the bedroom as Harley finished dressing. Wrapping his arms around her from behind; he kissed her neck. “I love you.” He whispered as he turned her in his arms and his lips captured hers. When the kiss was broken she looked at him, “I love you too.” “Can I talked to you for a second honey?” he wondered.
Nodding Harley pulled him over and they sat on the bed. “I finally realized why I want Lucia here.” He replied.
“Why?”
“Joe and Angela are my parents and will always be my mom and dad, nothing will ever change that.” Harley stroked his cheek as he continued, “Today means something to her and sweetie she was my friend—the friend that took me to the park when I was little or baked cookies for me. She was that before I knew she was my mother. I can’t let today pass when it means something for her. Does that make sense?” he asked.

Soulmates II... Chapter 9 Continued
“Yes, honey it does.” Harley said hugging him. Looking at the clock Harley gave him a quick kiss before she said, “Come on lets get outside and set up, everybody will be here soon.” She said. “Okay sweetie, but I don’t want you to lift anything heavy… promise me?” he asked. “I promise.”
Later that afternoon Gus looked out over the back yard watching his friends and family have a good time when he saw Lucia standing by the back gate watching him. “Harley?” He called. When she walked up he motioned to the gate and she saw Lucia. Linking his hand with hers they walked over.
“Happy Birthday Nicholas.” She said softly. “I didn’t know what to get you so I made these.” She replied handing him a foil wrapped plate.
Harley took the plate so he could take the cover off… when he did he saw the plate of chocolate chip cookies. He looked over at Harley, “My favorite cookie.” He answered picking one up and biting into it.
“Thank you Lucia, for coming today and for the cookies.” He said taking her hand and squeezing it for a minute then letting go.
Before Harley could say anything Zach came running to them and pulled on Gus’s pants pocket and he squatted down. “Hey little man what is it?”
“Daddy, can I have…” Zach let his sentence die when he realized what he said; looking from Harley to Gus as tears flooded his eyes he took off at a run going to the house.
Harley looked down at Gus, “He’s never called you that before. I’ll go check on him.” She said. “Are you sure?” Gus asked; she nodded. Lucia watched as he watched Harley walk away.
“You love her very much don’t you? She asked when he looked at her again.
“Since I was 16.” He replied and when she looked at him confused he explained, “We’ve been best friends since we were 10 and she was there for me when Dad died… Listen, can I talk to you for a minute?” When she nodded he pulled her to a quieter spot and told her why he’d asked her there today. When Gus looked toward the house again Lucia touched his arm, “Go Nicky.” He smiled at her and took off only stopping long enough to tell Frank he’d be back then ran in the house.
Reaching Zach’s room Gus leaned on the door jamb and watched Harley as she gently rocked him. Looking up when she heard him he saw her bright eyes and walked in. Kneeling in front of them he began to rub Zach’s back.
“He wants to call you Daddy.” Harley stated watching him. Gus reached for the little boy.
“Aww little man I’d love for you to call me daddy but you have a daddy, I’m your stepdad since I married mommy. “Why can’t I call you daddy too?” Zach wondered.
“You have a daddy sweetie.” Harley replied. “Little man, listen mommy and I will figure something out okay? It may take us awhile but we’ll think of something. In the meantime I want you to help me blow out the candles on my cake… will you help me?” Gus asked looking at Zach.
When he nodded he stood as Zach held on tighter and together they went to the back yard. “Sweetheart ask dad to come to the kitchen would you?” Harley said as she kissed him and headed to the kitchen as he and Zach headed outside. Gus nodded then stopped and gave Buzz the message.
Seeing Lucia sitting there talking to Cassie, he walked over and tapped her shoulder. Standing she turned and smiled when she saw Zach. “Lucia I’d like you to meet someone… this is Zach.” When the little boy held out his hand she laughed as she took it.
Turning when they heard Buzz and Harley they saw them bring the cake out.
“WOW!” Zach replied and Gus laughed. Walking to the table everyone sang Happy Birthday, when they finished Gus looked at Zach
“You ready?” the little boy nodded “Okay on 3 you and I will blow them out together… 1…2…3” Together they blew them out and everyone clapped. “Okay buddy you go play.” He requested as he put Zach down.
A little later, Lucia got up and motioned Harley over, “I need to go.” Harley nodded and called Gus over, “Yeah Sweetheart?” Lucia has to leave babe.” She answered. “Thank you for inviting me Gus.” “Thanks for coming.” Gus said softly. She nodded and together they watched Lucia leave.
“Baby come sit with me.” Gus replied pulling her back to where he’d been sitting with Rick.
“Thanks for the picnic beautiful” he whispered as he kissed her. Little did Gus or Harley know… someone was standing by the fence watching?

Soulmates II... Chapter 10
He looked around while he walked the area. Stopping at a local park he watched the kids as they played and wondered if that was where Gus played. He smiled as he thought a little boy with worn jeans and skinned knees. Continuing to walk, he stopped and stared at the church for a minute before walking to the door and laying a hand on it as a look of sadness came over his face as he thought of two young boys. Going in he lit a candle for each person that he was thinking about then kneels and taking out his rosary begins to pray. Father Ray watches for a moment then walks to him.
“Sir? Is everything alright?” he asks. The man looks up and smiles, “Yes Father. Thank you” the man answers holding the rosary closer and Ray notices. “That’s a beautiful rosary.”
“Thank you, it was a gift from a friend.” The man replied. “Well if you need anything I’ll be here.” Ray said as he stepped away and the man began to pray once again. A few minutes later he stands and leaves.
Looking back he thought of Gus as an alter boy like he would have been and the look on his father’s face. Taking a moment to let every thing sink in, the man continued down the street to a small house on 5th street. Reaching the house the man looked around as he imagined how much that house was loved and lived in. Putting the rosary in his jacket pocket he didn’t notice when a slip of paper fell out and landed on the grass.
Gus parked the car in the empty lot facing where Harley’s grandfather’s diner once stood and looked at her.
“Sweetheart are you sure you feel okay to do this with me?”
She turned to look at him, “Honey, I’m fine, we’re fine. Walking is good exercise.” She replied touching her tummy lightly then continued, “Today’s your dad’s birthday let’s remember him.”
“I love you very much.” Gus replied leaning over to kiss her before getting out. Breaking the kiss he got out and went around to help Harley out then they began slowly down 5th street. As they walked they talked about stuff that happened when they were kids. Stopping when they got to the park they looked at each other and with a nod of agreement they walked to the tree near the swings.
Standing behind her, Gus wrapped his arms around and laid his head on her shoulder. “This spot’s had a lot of conversations.” Harley said. “Yeah, some good and some not so good.” He replied kissing her shoulder. “I still remember the day you found me here the day dad died.”
“Me too, your eyes were so glassy when I found you I knew you’d pulled inside yourself. You knew I was there though.” Harley said. “I always knew you were there and I knew why you had pushed me to run from you that morning.” Laying a hand on her stomach he smiled, “Little one, your mommy and daddy spent a lot of time in this park and one day we’ll bring you and your brothers here to watch the sunset.” Gus remarked as he took her hand and they continued walking.
They stopped next in front of his dad’s police precinct. Harley rubbed his back as they stood in silence. “Do you want to go in?” she wondered. Not saying anything he shook his head no as he hugged her tight, “He is this baby’s grandfather, not….” She interrupted him, “Yes, Joe is the grandfather and we’ll make sure our children know about him.” Sitting on the bench for a little bit they watched the business of the precinct.
Standing Gus held out a hand and together they walked down the street. Halfway to where they were going Gus stopped and stared across the street then began to laugh.
“What are you laughing at honey?”
He pointed to the street light, “That’s where I saw you for the first time. I happened to see you kicking the street bully in the shins and you were right about there.” “Well, it surprised me when you yelled out at me… I almost didn’t come to you but the way you were looking at me told me you wanted to help me.” Harley said caressing Gus’s face.
As they continued walking they came across a little boy playing in his yard who waved at them as they went by. All three stopped when the door opened and a couple stepped out and called to the little boy. The man made eye contact, “Can we help you?” he asked walking to them. Gus and Harley looked at each other and smiled, “No, we were just passing through” Gus answered wrapping an arm around Harley holding her close. “Well if you have questions about the neighborhood my name’s Karl.”
“Well, thanks Karl but my husband and I know the neighborhood.” Harley said as they began to walk, “We grew up here.” She remarked.
Later when they reached where they were going they stopped and looked at the house. Gus started to the door but realized Harley wasn’t beside him and turned around
“Honey what are you doing?” he called. “Give me a second, I never saw where you lived remember?” she replied as she took in the house where Gus grew up. Looking over the house something lying in the grass caught her eye and picking it up she saw a paper with what looked like a number on it and slipped it in her pocket
Meeting Gus at the door she asked, “Are you sure the house is empty?”
“Yeah it hasn’t been lived in since mom died.” Gus answered as he let them in the door. Taking a few staggering steps as all the memories flooded his mind; Harley held him steady,
“Sweetheart?”
“I’m okay; I’m okay…its just strange being here with all my memories again.” Gus answered looking at her with sadness in his eyes. “You don’t have to do this babe.” She said softly. “I want to, come on.” He remarked taking her hand to have that contact as he told her stories as they went through the house.
Going into a bedroom he looked at her, “Sweetie, this was my room and there” he said pointing “is where my bed was and I’d say goodnight to you on the stars.” She smiled as she watched him go to the closet and open it and look around. When he did he spotted a box and looking puzzled pulled it down.
“Harley” he whispered as he turned to face her, “What?” “This has my name on it but I don’t remember seeing this before. Walking out Gus went to the couch and sat down and she sat next to him as he looked through it.
When he opened it he found a letter addressed to him and began to read:
Dear Nicky,
If you are reading this it means I am no longer with you to tell you where to find this box and you have found this. This box holds something that I wanted you to have but when you where older. So when you see it know that both your father and I are proud of you. Also as I was going through your dad’s things that I still had with me I discovered he’d hidden letters for you so they are here as well.
I Love you,
Mom
Putting down the letter Gus opened the box and what he saw made his breathe catch. “Harley look?” He replied. Seeing it she placed a hand on his chest. “Gus look at me honey, breathe slowly.” As she watched him she said, “I thought you had your dad’s badge?” He shook his head, “No, they gave it to mom along with the flag and after we got home she put it away.”
Harley took the badge to hold for him as he picked up the two letters. Seeing the first envelope with Gus scrawled across it he looked at the second one and was surprised to see Harley (Gus’s Friend) written on the front.
“There’s a letter for me honey and one for you.” He said seeing the expression on her face. “Me?” He nodded lets go see dad then when can read these at home.
Helping her up Gus placed the letters in his jacket pocket while Harley placed the badge in her purse. Walking back to the car they drove to the cemetery.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Carefully making there way to Joe’s grave they stopped.
“Hi Dad, Happy Birthday. I love you.” Gus said quietly as Harley rubbed his back. “Harley’s with me today because we wanted to tell you something. You’re going to be a grandfather dad; Harley just found out a few weeks ago that we’re having a baby due November 18th. We are happy dad—she makes me so happy.”
“Hi Mr. Augustino, Gus and I wanted you to be the first to know about the baby.” Harley said as she wiped the tears off Gus’s face. “You know I couldn’t have come see you without bringing you the flowers.” She replied laying a yellow and red rose on top of the marker. As she did she saw the rosary lying there and picked it up.
“Gus, who would have left your dad a rosary?” she ask turning to show him. “A rosary?” he replied taking it from her
“I don’t know babe.” He answered looking at it. Turning it over they saw the shiny mounting on the back; looking closer Gus saw engraving and began to read it out loud
N. James
2001.
His eyes flew to hers, “Sweetheart? Nathan was here.” Harley took his hand, “Let’s go home and figure this out?”
Soulmates II... Chapter 11
Harley never fully waking up rolled closer to Gus and snuggled with him so his body heat could keep her warm; when she did he sighed in his sleep and held her closer.
Several hours later Gus woke when Harley made her way quickly to the bathroom. Jumping up he went with her and kneeling beside her held her hair back while the morning sickness took over. Rubbing her back with his other hand Gus talked to her so she could hear his voice. Standing he wet a washcloth and when she finished helped her sit down. Then he knelt in front of her and bathed her face and neck knowing she was shaky. Throwing the cloth in the sink he stayed with her and tucked hair behind her ear
“Take it easy sweetheart.” He replied caressing her face. “I’m okay now; go ahead and get dressed and I’ll be out in a few minutes.” Harley said as he helped her stand. Nodding Gus left her and went to shower in the boys bathroom then dressed in jeans and blue button down shirt. Going down stairs he began to fix Harley some light toast and tea that he knew she ate on the mornings the morning sickness was pretty bad.
When Harley saw what Gus had fixed for her she walked to him; sensing her there he turned and she wrapped her arms around his neck as he held her close. Leaning down his lips claimed hers as he kissed her good morning.
“Hmmmmm hey beautiful.” Gus whispered breaking the kiss. “Thank you.” She said softly. Knowing what she was talking about he winked at her, “Anytime, now sit down and eat.” He said turning away from her to get his coffee and bagels and joining her at the table.
“What time did you say the doctor’s appointment was?”
“11:00” she answered, “So we’ll have plenty of time to get the boys’ to dad’s and get to Cedars.” She finished just as Zach and Jude came running in. Looking surprised she said, “They’re dressed!” “Yeah after I showered and dressed I got them dressed.” Gus said as they hugged him then he got up and fixed them their favorite cereal. Later as the boys ate Gus stood
“Sweetheart?” Gus called. When she looked up he continued, “I’m going to run to the station and check in with Franklin but I’ll be back in plenty of time to leave okay?” She nodded then he kissed her hair and headed to the door.
Once Gus was in the car he dialed home, “Hello.” Harley answered. “Hey honey, I’m going to see Phillip while I’m out, Zach asked while I was helping him get dressed why I couldn’t be called daddy.” Gus replied.
“Be careful.” She replied. “I will.” He said looking at the clock, “its 7:30 now I’ll be back by 10.” “Okay love you.” She said. “Love you too.” Gus answered as he hung up.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“Nolan, I DON’T care if he’s busy, I need to see him.” Gus said getting frustrated as the nervous butler went to let Phillip know.
When he was led into the study Phillip turned, “Gus what brings you here at this time of morning?” he asked as he packed his briefcase. “I came to talk--.” He started to say but stopped when he saw the luggage by the desk.
“Going somewhere Phillip?”
“Actually I’m leaving for a business trip in an hour.” He answered.
Phillip didn’t see the muscle jump in Gus’s jaw as he continued, “I wanted to talk to you about Zach for a minute.”
“What about Zach is something wrong?” he asked looking at Gus but then checked the luggage.
“Zach has asked Harley and I why he can’t call me daddy, he wants to be able to call me that.” Gus said slowly as Phillip looked at him.
“He has a father.”
“Does he?” Gus wondered.
“What’s his favorite ice cream? Gus asked. “I don’t know
“Did you know that when he’s sick he likes to have his back rubbed until he’s asleep? Or when he’s scared he wants daddy to scare the monsters away or that he likes to have a story read at night? A daddy knows these things; I know these things because I see that little boy and spent time with him more than you do.
I do those things with him and for him like a father should, I hold him when he’s scared, I try and make him feel better when he’s sick, I love him no matter what--- he comes before any business deal or trip I do. He means more to me than a deal or a meeting.” Gus said loudly.
Phillip stared at Gus, “Okay he can.” He said quietly. “Excuse me?” Gus asked, “I won’t stop him from calling you daddy, but I’m his father.” “I’ll never try to take your place.” Gus replied as he left.
Out in the hall Alan walked in, “A daddy can send a scary dream away on a balloon.” He said softly to Phillip and he turned. “I have to go dad, I’ll be back tonight.” he said as he left.

Soulmates II... Chapter 11 Continued
The nurse showed both Harley and Gus in the exam room and few minutes later Dr. Sedwick joined them.
“Hello Harley, Gus lets get started.” She replied as she started the exam. After the exam and sonogram Gus helped Harley dress; then Dr. Sedwick joined them again.
“Everything looks good Harley.” She said and smiled when Gus kissed Harley’s hair. “Everything’s on schedule, how bad’s the morning sickness?” she asked. “Some days, it’s not so bad, other days it’s pretty bad.” Harley replied. The doctor nodded and handed Harley the prescription she had. “I’ll want to see you next month alright?”
They nodded and left her office and once the prescription was filled they headed to Company. When they walked in Zach saw them, “Mommy!!!” he yelled running to her. She picked him up and kissed him
“You okay?” he asked just as Buzz came up. She smiled and nodded as Gus took him from her so they could tell Buzz.
“What did he mean honey?” Buzz wondered looking concerned. “Daddy, I want to tell you something, you’re going to be a grandfather again. Gus and I are having a baby.” She said as she watched the news sink in.
“What?! When?” Buzz asked
“November 18th.” Gus said chuckling as Harley hugged her dad. After Buzz hugged her he shook hands with Gus. “You take care of her!” he stated.
“Absolutely.” Gus remarked as he winked at his wife. Walking to the calendar Buzz pulled it off the wall and came back to them. They watched as he marked the 18th. They gathered the boys and went home.
“Sweetie you get comfy and I’ll fix us sandwiches for lunch.” Gus said as he watched her go upstairs. When she came down she saw Zach sitting in Gus’s lap and he was tickling him.
“Daddy stop!” Zach said laughing. Zach stared at Gus realizing what he had said again. Harley sat down. “It’s okay Zach.” He said softly. The little boy snuggled closer, “I love you daddy.” “And I love you.” Gus said looking at Harley.
“Okay buddy you eat okay then mommy and I need you and Jude to play upstairs for a while. After everyone had eaten and the boys were playing Gus went to his jacket and pulled out the letters then sitting back down past Harley her letter.
“I talked to Franklin and told him what we’d found and he asked if we connected anything.” “So let’s get to work.” Harley said.
As they began working and talking and going over where’d they had been Harley remembered the paper.
“Okay, babe, we know Nathan did exist then when we visited your dad we found the Rosary with his name and the year 2001 on it so he had to have left it. But I just remembered when we were at your house I saw something in the grass and picked it up and this is what it was.” Harley said handing Gus the paper and he saw the number
709-555-8974 “Baby this is a phone number.” He said. “I know but for what?” she replied “Or Who?” he wondered.
“Hang on…” Gus said grabbing the phone and calling someone. “Hey Eric, its Gus how are ya? I was wondering if you could find out where and to whom a number belongs to for me. He asked giving Eric the number and then hung up. “He’ll call us back when he knows he’s looking into it.” He said as they continued to work. Twenty minutes later the phone rang and Gus answered.
“Gus? It’s Eric that number belongs to a James Augustino in Chicago.” He answered as Gus closed his eyes. “Are you sure?” “Yeah I have the address if you want it.” Eric said as Gus shakily wrote the address. “Thanks Eric.” He replied then hung up.
“Honey?” Harley asked looking at him worried. “That number belongs to a man named James Augustino who lives in Chicago. Eric gave me the address.” He said staring at his wife as he tried to steady himself.
“My uncle is alive honey.” He whispered grabbing to hold her as she ran her hands through his hair. “Let’s see what your dad said to us honey.”
He looked at her as she handed him his letter, opening it he began to read it:
Dear Son, August 29th 1980
This is a letter I wrote mostly for me but one day I hope you will read this; which means I’m no longer with you. I hope I say these words to you personally instead of through this letter. You know being a cop is a hard job and there can be hard choices to make. As you grow son you will be faced with making choices some tough some easy. You’ve said you want to be a cop like me. Know son that if you choose that career or any career momma and I will behind you. You will grow into a fine caring man. Even now at ten I see the caring heart. Son, I hope you know that when the times are rocky you can come to me or mama and we will listen. Or if you have a close friend or friends and don’t want to come to us; spend time with them. I am so proud of you and so proud to call you my son. Knowing the life of a cop let me say this: Even though I will come home distracted and preoccupied at times know that you, your momma, and sister are always with me wherever I go.
I love you son and always will,
Dad Joe Augustino
Gus sat in silence for a minute and pulled Harley close. “He knew I’d be cop.”
She nodded, “Let me read what he says to me and began reading:
Dear Harley, August 29th 1980.
You and I have never met and I hope one day we will. Gus has told me about you and how he’s helped you avoid the street bully. I remember the day he came home with a fat lip and told his mother and me what happen. After dinner that night he asked me if he’d done good by keeping Karl away from you and I told him yes he did, I would have done the same.
I don’t know if he told you I was a cop or not and if he has I hope you don’t hold that against him. I’m telling you something that Gus doesn’t know for a reason sweetheart. I’ve seen you -- one day my partner and I were watching the 5th street beat and we saw the bully begin to harass you. We watched as you held your own with him for a while; however when he began to be to much and you started to cry my partner told me, “I’m going to take care of this punk.” And he and I were just about to step out when I heard Gus and I told my partner to wait. We watched as Gus dealt with Karl and took you home.
Harley, you have become the friend that my son needs, someone who will listen and care when things get rocky for him. You are someone he depends on and cares about. Please be there for him. I know he’s worried about my current case, be there to reassure him everything’s okay and I love him. Please be there to steady him when he’s shaken.
He needs you now! I hope we get to meet but if for some reason we don’t; know that I love you because you love my son, Be with him because he’ll need you.
All My Love,
Joe Augustino
When Harley laid down the letter she looked at him and saw tears, “He knew Harley.” She scooted closer, “He knew why I’d need you.” Hugging him she smiled, “Joe knew we depended on each other.”
As they sat in silence Gus leaned back, “He knows you’d steady me now.” Harley kissed his temple, “I love you.” “And I you.” Gus whispered. “Thanks Dad.”
“I love you too Mr. Augustino.” Harley said lovingly. They sat in silence thinking about their letter.
The ringing phone broke the warm silence…

Soulmates II... Chapter 12
Authors Note: For this chapter I have blended the history I created for GusH with various aspects of the current storyline just a little and put my spin on it… that is why I have written parts of the story up until now, the way I have… You will see where (please no tomatoes LOL)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The ringing phone broke the warm silence…
Gus jumped up to answer the phone and Harley walked to the window to look out; she’d thought she had seen raindrops. As she turned a loud crack of thunder sounded.
“Hello.” Gus answered “Are you sure? Okay I’ll be there in 10 minutes.” He said hanging up.
“Baby that was the station… there’s been an accident on route 16 and I’m the closest, I’ve got to go.” He said going to the closet.
“Ok I’ll call a sitter and we’ll go.” Harley stated.
“No, honey, its raining hard and I don’t want you out in this… stay with the boys and I’ll be back as soon as I can.” Gus said grabbing his jacket and throwing it on.
Harley opened the door and they both saw how hard it was raining, “Damn!” he muttered as he grabbed an umbrella. Going to her he ran a hand down her arm. “I’ll be back as soon as I can sweetheart, try to rest.” he replied as caressed her face then kissed her, “I love you.”
“I love you too Gus.” she whispered, “Please be careful” she remarked as he hugged her.
“Absolutely.” He stated opening the umbrella and running to the car. Shutting the door she went back and read both letters again, finally saying out loud what she’d been thinking when Gus was with her, “You knew you weren’t going to make it out of the Santos bust alive didn’t you Joe and you wanted me to be with Gus when he found out.”
“What’ve we got?” Gus asked walking up next to the officer as they watched the paramedics, “Car Accident, apparently that little red car was in the right lane and was going to merge behind the silver Lincoln which was in the left lane. Because of the rain the driver of the red car misjudged when to merge; hit a slick spot and lost control and hit the Lincoln broadside; flipped the Lincoln twice and as he flipped, the car slid into the guardrail and stopped.
The Chief walked up then, “Gus thanks for coming until I could get here.” He said. “Not a problem, I’ll stay now until we know something.” Gus replied as he walked over to the Lincoln to check on the driver.
They were just pulling the driver out when he got there. “How is he?” A paramedic walked over, “He’s not going to make it. The internal injuries are severe and he’s bleeding out internally and he’s not stable yet.”
Just as they moved the man to a gurney Gus saw his face and ran too him, “Phillip??” He opened his eyes, “Gus?” “Yeah, I’m here.” he answered. “Take care Harley and Zach.” Phillip said as blood appeared on his lips.
“You got it. Always.” Gus answered laying a hand on Phillip’s shoulder and his blood pressure began to plummet then his heart quit. The paramedics worked on him but there was no saving him.
“Chief, what about the other driver?” “He didn’t make it either.” Franklin said. Gus nodded. “If you don’t mind I need to go home and tell Harley.” Franklin nodded, “Go ahead… I’ll deal with the Spauldings.” Gus walked slowly to the car not caring that he was getting soaked all he wanted was to get to Harley.
He quietly let himself in the house. After locking up Gus looked at his watch 1:00 a.m. it had three hours since he’d left; and in those hours a little boy’s life had been changed. Pulling off his jacket he hung it up and slowly walked upstairs.
Stopping at the boys room Gus went in covered them again, kneeling by Zach he rubbed his back as he whispered, “I’m sorry buddy, your father loved you so much.” Standing he kissed the boys gently then left and headed to the bedroom. Stripping out of his clothes; down to his underwear as he went Gus threw them in the bathroom and grabbed sweatpants and pulled them on then slowly climbed on the bed.
Feeling the bed dip beneath his weight Harley woke, “Gus?”
“Yeah Harley it’s me, Sorry I didn’t mean to wake you.” He replied.
She rolled on her back, “Are you just getting in?” she asked But when he didn’t answer she watched him as he lovingly covered her stomach with both hands and look at her face.
“The accident was bad wasn’t it?” She stated. He nodded then reached over and turned on the light and she saw his face.
“Come here Coop.” Gus replied helping her sit up and turning where he was sitting behind her.
“I need to tell you something?” he said not exactly sure how to say the words.
“What?”
