The Man Who Loves... Chapter 1
A few mentions: This happens before they became a couple and Harley has Zach who has just turned 3, Gus and she are partners and he is obnoxious.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Harley walked into the station so mad she couldn’t see straight. Phillip had called this morning to let her know he couldn’t pick Zach up this afternoon for the weekend because something came up and he wouldn’t be able to take him this weekend.
“Cooper.” Gus called loudly while she wondered what he wanted now. When she heard her partner Harley rolled her eyes as she walked toward their office mumbling, “I can’t stand him, I can’t stand him, he’ll be the death of me yet.” To her he was obnoxious and she didn’t like the man, he was rough, rude, and at times mean and she wondered if he even had a heart; or was a human being.
To make matters worse she was coming down with Zach’s cold she realized as she sneezed when she walked in the door. Stopped she said, “You bellowed Aitoro?” then went to her desk. Gus looked up and watched as Harley walked in. “Yeah where have you been? You were supposed to be here an hour ago? You know Franklin wants us to spend today and probably tomorrow on paperwork.” he replied. He couldn’t seem to quit looking at her she was so beautiful. As she sat down, he saw she was ready to hit something.
“What’s wrong with you?
“If you must know even though it’s none of your business, Zach’s father can’t take him this weekend plus I’m catching the cold he had and was going to use this weekend to rest. But now I guess I’ll nap when Zach does.” She answered. “So take him to your dad’s or Frank’s.” Gus replied looking at the papers on his desk. “I can’t, dads out of town and Frank’s on duty this weekend. She said as she sat down. “And yes I know we have paperwork Aitoro.”
Throughout the morning Harley had been dealing with her sore throat. Drinking tea and taking cough drops.
Later that afternoon, when Harley had just come back from getting some hot tea she walked back in the office and started sneezing and coughing again. She grabbed to hold on to her desk when she started to sway. Gus saw her an jumped up and held out a hand to her
“Take my hand.” He said softly as she placed her hand in his and he held her steady until she gained her equilibrium back.
Sitting down, she started trying to write update reports on certain cases for Chief Franklin as Gus began cleaning his desk of the candy wrappers from his candy stash. While he did that she tried to work on the report and ignore him. After fifteen minutes past she put her pen down and looked at him
“Will you STOP that?” Harley asked irritated
Gus looked up, “What?” “The crackling and wadding up of your numerous candy wrappers when you throw them away, its annoying.” She replied
“Well if I don’t clean I’ll be up to my eyeballs in candy wrappers Harley.” He answered as he went back to cleaning.
As she watched him, she couldn’t help but stare, he was as good looking guy. She shook her head, not wanting to think about that as she tried not to stare and get back to work.
She glanced up and found him staring at her, “Will you quit staring at me?” she said as she quickly stood.
“You want me Coop, I know you do.” Gus said smiling.
“Aitoro, I don’t want anybody right now and you’d be the last man I’d want.” She answered as she stood turned toward the door and opened it. Not realizing he’d moved she jumped as a hand reached around and closed the door then pulled her to her chair and sat her down. Kneeling beside her he placed an arm across her chair as he looked in her eyes
“Prove it?” he whispered.
“I’m divorced Aitoro with a 3 year old in case you’ve forgotten that fact.” She tried to answer but being this close to him was driving her crazy. “I haven’t forgotten.” He answered. “Then--.” She started to say but was cut off when Gus’s mouth met hers in a kiss she felt to her toes. While he kissed her she realized she couldn’t help but be affected by him but then realized what was happening and pushed him away.
Letting her go Gus sat on his heels. “You want me I knew it!” “Don’t do that again.” She asked “I just had to kiss you before it drove me crazy.” Before he continued, she said, “You know I just got divorced and I’m not ready for that, you knew that!” “We can forget about it Harley, call it my experiment; it won’t happen again.” He replied standing and going to his desk.
Nodding she forgot about leaving and going to get more forms as she went back to work as did he and were silent as they thought about the kiss that they shared. Each tried to forget but they couldn’t.
Twenty minutes later when Gus turned to ask her something he smiled when he saw she was asleep. Getting up he went to her, sitting on the edge of her desk he watched her sleep. While watching her, he saw just how tired she was. Hiding the emotion in his face and eyes he touched her shoulder
“Hey Coop, we don’t sleep on the job, since the cold’s wiping you out go home!” he said. “Are you sure?” “Yeah I’m a big boy I think I can handle my job.” He answered. “You don’t have to be rude Aitoro” she said as she gathered her stuff and left the station. Watching her leave Gus thought to himself “Go rest baby.”
Once Harley reached home she crawled in bed and slept till she had to get up when the sitter brought Zach home from his play date in the park. After he was home and she was awake she spent time with him then fixed them dinner afterward he played on the floor while she worked on paperwork. Harley couldn’t concentrate because she kept thinking of Gus and his kiss. Remembering how it felt to be kissed by him she smiled.
After giving Zach his bath and reading him a story he went to sleep. Going to her room Harley got in her pajamas she took some medicine then crawled in bed. Turning on the baby monitor so she could her Zach she fell asleep and dreamed about Gus and his kiss.
Gus’s room
He sat on the bed finishing up a report before going to bed but in the back of his mind he thought of Harley and he wondered if she’d managed to get any sleep before Zach got home today. He’d seen how flushed she was when she left and knew she probably had a fever but if he’d said something she probably would’ve told him he didn’t know what he was talking about. “If you let me in I’ll prove I’m not like everyone else.”
Putting the report down he climbed in bed realizing what he wanted to do tomorrow more than anything. As he thought about Harley and what it’d felt like to kiss her he drifted off.
The Man Who Loves... Chapter 2
When Harley heard the doorbell the next morning after breakfast she went to answer it and stopped when she saw who was standing at her front door. “Aitoro what are you doing here?” Harley asked. “I’m here to watch Zach.” He answered as he walked in and shut the door behind him.
“Excuse me, you’re here to do what?” she asked looking completely surprised.
“Harley you’re sick sweetie, you need to rest so I’m volunteering to take care of Zach today, I’m not leaving.” Gus replied as he laid a hand on her cheek. “Let me help Coop.” He laid his other hand on her forehead checking for a fever. When he felt how warm she was he led her to the couch and made her sit down.
Harley couldn’t stop staring at Gus. When she found her voice she asked, “Okay who are you and what have you done with Gus?”
He laughed, “Do you even know how to take care of a 3 yr old?” she asked just as Zach wondered in from the kitchen “Mommy? I’m done with breakfast. Hi Gus.” He said climbing on the couch beside her. When she tried to stand Gus placed a hand on her shoulder, “Coop I’ll take Care of Zach, let me do this for you?”
“Are you sure?” she asked.
He nodded as he knelt, “Buddy come here for a second? He asked looking at Zach. The little boy went to him, “I’m going to stay with you today so mommy can rest because she has a cold, will you help me take care of her?” Gus asked as Harley watched not sure what to think about the man in front of her. Zach nodded as he went back to sit by his mom then took her hand.
“Now where’s the thermometer Coop?” Gus asked “It’s in the bathroom medicine cabinet why?” she started to ask but watched as he ran upstairs. Coming down a minute later he went to her. He placed the thermometer under her tongue; she watched him trying to figure out what happened to her obnoxious partner.
While he waited for it to beep he went around and sat beside the little boy as he ran a toy truck up and down Gus’s arms. When Gus looked over after the thermometer beeped he saw Harley with her head resting on the couch. Gently taking the thermometer he looked at it.
“Harley?” he said. She opened her eyes, “Go upstairs your temp’s 100.” When she stood and started to sway he jumped up then went to steadied her. Propping her against the arm of the couch he said, “Wait here and don’t move; I’ll be right back.” Disappearing in the kitchen she could hear him in the refrigerator. When he came back he was carrying a glass of orange juice. Placing an arm around her he looked at Zach, “Buddy stay there on the couch and play with your trucks and I’ll be back after I help mommy okay.” He nodded as Gus walked with Harley upstairs.
The Man Who Loves... Chapter 2 Continued
Reaching her room, she crawled in bed, “Where’s your Tylenol?” he asked. Pointing to her bathroom he walked away and came back holding two. “Take these and drink the juice for me.” He asked as she took the pills from him still trying to see the obnoxious man she worked with. After sitting the glass down he covered her up
“I’ll come check on you later okay, you rest. If you need me call.” He replied kneeling by the bed. She nodded, “If you need help with Zach wake me up. He likes peanut butter and Jelly for lunch and I make him a half of sandwich then cut it in half… unless he wants a whole then I cut it in half twice.” She said. Gus smiled, “I’ll bring you soup later okay.” Harley just looked at him
“Are you real?” she asked beginning to drift off.
Taking her hand he held it, “I’m real honey.” Gus answered as he stayed with her until she was asleep. Closing the door a little he went back downstairs with Zach.
“Gus I wanna watch cartoons.” Zach asked. Nodding he found the cartoons Zach liked watching and then he sat by him and worked on paperwork and occasionally checked on Harley until time for lunch.
In the kitchen Gus had soup heating for Harley while he asked Zach what he wanted. Pulling out the PB & J Gus began to fix the sandwich when he felt someone staring at him. He turned and saw Harley propped against the door frame watching him.
“What are you doing up?” he asked. “I wanted to check on Zach when I heard you two talking.” She said.
Going to her, Gus helped her sit at the table then went back to making Zach’s sandwich. “What are you making?” she asked. “Well I’m heating some soup for you and right now I’m fixing a PB & J sandwich.” He answered cutting the sandwich in half then putting it on a paper plate. Taking the plate to the table Zach climbed in a chair as Gus poured milk in a sippy cup then handed it to the little boy. Turning he went to the stove and brought back two bowls of soup then fixing some juice brought it to Harley.
While they ate he asked, “How are you feeling?” “My throat feels like its on fire and I’m still tired.” She replied. “When you finish go back to bed okay, Zach and I are going to go play outside after lunch.” Nodding, she looked at her son, “Has he been okay?” “Yeah he’s been fine.” Gus answered.
“Why are you being so nice to me Gus?” Harley asked.
“Honestly?” She nodded, “You remember last month when I broke down with you over the Vendetta I had?” She nodded again not saying anything but letting him talk
“You are the first person who’s seen me cry over my dad and understood why. When you told me I had you I wanted to believe it so much. I realized that day that I love you.” He looked at her. Not looking at him she took his hand
“There’s something about you that makes me want to trust you but I’ve been hurt so many times and when Phillip divorced me it hurt so much. I told myself I’d never trust a man again. I just can’t take that chance.” She answered as she let go of his hand and finished eating.
Seeing that she was tired he gently rubbed her cheek, “Sweetie go on back to bed. We’ll be outside for a while then I’ll check on you when I come in.” She nodded as she stood then kissed Zach on the top of his head. Looking over at him, “I’m sorry.” She said then went back to bed. “Harley I love you and I’m going to prove I’m not like the other men in your life.” Gus said quietly as he and Zach went outside.
Zach and Gus played outside most of the afternoon. After they went inside he got Zach settled playing with his toys on the floor then went to check on Harley.
Reaching her room he quietly opened the door and went in. Seeing she was still asleep but uncovered he carefully covered her up then placing a soft kiss at her temple he walked out closing the door just a little then went back downstairs. Making sure Zach was okay Gus went back to work on the reports he brought over. Around 6:00 Zach walked to him
“Gus, I’m hungry what’s for supper?” Checking his watch, “I don’t know what do you want?” he asked. “Macaroni and Cheese like last night.” Zach answered. “Did mommy put some in the refrigerator?” When Zach grinned Gus jumped up, “Okay let’s go find it.”
After he’d looked through the refrigerator and finally found it he pulled it out plus the left over soup from that afternoon. While those were heating he made himself a turkey and cheese sandwich. Turning he looked at the little boy, “Why don’t we have a picnic Zach? “Yay!!” Zach said jumping up and down then stopped, “But what about mommy?” “You want to go upstairs and have it with her?” Gus asked. He nodded. Once everything was ready he placed it on a tray and looked at Zach
“Let’s go eat with mommy okay.” He nodded as both guys made there way upstairs. Reaching the hall Gus said
“Buddy I need you to open the door for me but be quiet mommy’s still sleeping okay.”
“Why’s she sleepin’?” Zach asked. “You know how yucky you felt when you were sick last week and you wanted to sleep?” He nodded, “Mommy feels real yucky like you did.” Gus replied.
“Go open the door buddy please?” Gus asked when they reached her room. Carefully opening the door Gus and Zach walked in then he sat the tray on the table and went to Harley. Leaning over he lightly shook her shoulder
“Harley, Harley.” Gus said softly. When she opened her eyes and focused on him he said, “It’s time for you to eat okay… I brought it to you.” She slowly sat up and as she did she saw Zach standing there.
“What is this?” she asked. He smiled, “Well see Zach and I decided to have a picnic but we didn’t want to have it without you so we brought the picnic to you.” Gus replied.
Seeing everything on the tray she smiled. Gus looked at the little boy and told him to sit by the bed then went in Harley’s bathroom and grabbed a towel and came back. Laying the towel on the floor Gus set Zach’s Mac and cheese on the towel in front of him and he began to eat. Facing her, Gus took his sandwich and he and Harley ate their supper.
After they finished eating Gus got two more Tylenol for her to take after he’d checked her fever. When she started to get up he stopped her,
“Where do you think your going?”
“To give Zach his bath at 7:30.” She answered. Gus shook his head, “Coop, your fever is still up, let me do it.” “But you’ve already done too much.” She said. “Honey get back to bed, I’ll give Zach his bath and put him to bed I want to.” Gus looked at Zach, “Do you mind if I give you a bath and put you to bed?” he shook his head no. “Baby come here and give me a kiss night okay.” Harley said as Zach kissed her. Walking to the door with Zach, Gus turning to look at her saw that she was staring and he smiled and all she could manage to say was, “He likes a bedtime story.” “Got it.” He answered as he carried the stuff downstairs.
While the boys were downstairs the phone rang and Gus grabbed it before it could wake Harley.
“Hello.” He answered.
“Who is this?” Phillip asked when he heard a man answer at Harley’s.
“It’s Gus Aitoro… Who is this?” Gus asked. “It’s Phillip Spaulding, Zach’s father; what the heck are you doing there.” He demanded.
“I’m taking care of Zach today so Harley could rest since she’s sick with a cold.”
“What do you mean?” Phillip asked. Gus didn’t say anything for a minute as he counted to 10 then said as nice as he could
“Phillip had you picked Zach up yesterday you would have known Harley was sick, but instead you had to do something else so I volunteered to watch him so she could rest. Now why were you calling?”
“I was calling to say Good Night to my son.” Phillip replied.
“Hold on?” Gus answered as he turned and told Zach who had been sitting at the table playing. Giving the phone to him he waited while Zach said goodnight to Phillip. When Zach went back to playing Gus said goodbye and hung up.
Walking to the table, Gus said, “Okay bath time buddy.” Zach climbed off the chair and ran upstairs. After the bath was done he carried Zach to his room and got him changed into his pajamas. Settling him in bed Gus picked up the book by the bed; sitting down he leaned back. When he did Zach leaned on him as he began reading. Halfway through the story he saw the little boy was asleep and carefully lay him down as he climbed off the bed. After tucking him in Gus made sure the monitor was on then went to Harley.
Walking in, he went and knelt by the bed, gently caressing her cheek he waited till she opened her eyes.
“Gus, what?” she asked sleepily.
“I just wanted to let you know I’m leaving okay. Zach had his bath and story and is sound asleep. He also talked to his father.”
“Phillip called?”
“Yeah he wanted to tell Zach good night, he freaked when I answered and found out I was here.” “What’d you tell him?” Harley asked.
“That you were sick and I was watching Zach while you rested.” “I’ll tell you what he said to me when he gets back.” Harley said with a tired smile.
“Okay, you go back to sleep.” She nodded as he continued, “The Tylenol is right here if you need it and I’ll get you some water.” Gus said walking in the bathroom and she heard him filling a glass then brought it back setting it on the table by her. Kneeling again he pushed hair off her face
“I’ll lock up as I leave. Zach’s monitor is on.” Taking his hand she held it just watching him. Standing he made sure her monitor was on as he started to walk away she stopped him
“Gus?”
Walking to her he softly answered, “Yeah Coop?” “Thank you.” She said as she continued to watch him. Gently rubbing her cheek, “You’re welcome; call me if you need anything alright. Go back to sleep babe.” She nodded and drifted off as he left her room and headed downstairs. Opening the door he made sure the locks were turned then quietly closed the door behind him. With one last look at the door he laid his hand on it then walked to his car and drove to his hotel.
The Man Who Loves... Chapter 3
“Cooper, Aitoro, I need to see you both in my office please.” Franklin said as he turned and went back to his desk.
Gus and Harley looked at each other then went to see the chief. “What’s up chief?” Harley asked as she sat down and Gus stood behind her.
“I need you both to do stake out surveillance tonight.” He replied passing Harley the file while Gus read over her shoulder. “Surveillance?” Gus asked. “Yeah I got a tip about an hour ago that there might be a possible drug ring being run and I need proof. I want you both to go on a stake out tonight to watch for any strange activity, such as people in and out fairly quickly and frequently… you know the drill.” Chief Franklin stated then gave them the address.
Going back to their desk Harley called Frank as Gus went back to work. “Frank?” “Hey its Harley, could you watch Zach tonight, Franklin needs Gus and me to go on a stakeout tonight.” Listening she answered,
“Yes Frank I’ll be careful, the sitter’s still at the house now …. Give Zach a kiss for me and tell him I love him. Thanks.” She said then hung up. “Was everything okay with Zach?” he asked. She nodded, “He’s going to stay with Frank tonight.” She said a little distracted.
For the rest of the day they worked in a comfortable rhythm. At five thirty she glanced up and saw Gus coming back from Franklin’s office.
“Okay Coop, the chief’s sprung us since we’re doing the stake out tonight.” He replied seeing the surprise in her eyes. “He did?” Smiling he sat on the corner of her desk facing her, “Yeah, I’ll follow you home.” Without thinking she nodded as he followed her out of the station. As she drove home Harley couldn’t help but smile as she thought the man following her.
When her cell rang she checked the caller id then answered, “Gus?” what’s up?”
“Sweetie I’m going to make a stop at the grocery store and pick up snacks for us, what do you want?” She thought for a minute then told him. “Got it, the turn off is coming up, I’ll be ten minutes behind you.” He said as he hung up. Harley looked in the rearview mirror just in time to see him slow for the turn as he did he flashed his interior light twice and turned.
Reaching the house, Harley let herself in. Before going upstairs she carried the mail to the table and began looking through it. Twenty minutes later she heard a knock on the door and looked up as Gus stuck his head in. “Harley?” he called. “I’m in the kitchen come on in she answered as she heard the door close and he walked in.
Taking the sack of snacks from him she realized Gus was holding a duffel bag. “Do you mind if I change here Harley?” Shaking her head, “The bathroom’s over there.” She answered pointing towards it. “I’ll change and be back down in a few minutes.” She said going up the stairs.
“Take your time.” Gus replied watching her.
A little later, Harley walked in the family room just as Gus walked out of the bathroom. When she saw him she had a hard time breathing as he walked toward her; he was wearing black jeans and a white sweater and carried a leather jacket.
“Harley are you alright?” Gus asked smiling while she stared at him. He couldn’t help but stare at her either; she looked fantastic in jeans.
“Yeah, I’m fine.” Harley replied, “Are you ready to go?” “Yeah I am; which car do you want to take… mine or yours?” he asked. “Let’s take mine.” Harley said tossing him the keys. Grabbing the snacks off the table he followed her to the door and waited as she locked it then placing a hand at her back they went to her car.
Smiling to himself Gus started the car then turned, “Harley, we need to make a stop before we head over there.” She nodded somewhat distracted as he started driving. Twenty minutes later they stopped, taking her hand and squeezing it gently he replied
“Go say goodnight to your son Coop. I’ll wait here.” Gus said softly.
The Man Who Loves... Chapter 3 Continued
When Harley heard him she realized that they were sitting outside Frank’s house. Not letting go of his hand,
“I’ll be back.” He nodded as she let go and opened her door.
While Gus waited he saw Frank walk toward the car. “What the heck are you doing here Aitoro?” he asked. “Well Frank I knew Harley really wanted to see Zach and tell him goodnight so before we went on the stakeout I wanted Harley to be happy Frank.” Gus looked out the window to see Harley carrying a pajama clad Zach out to the car.
Reaching him she said, “He wants to tell you goodnight.” She replied.
“Excuse me Frank.” He said opening the door causing Frank to take a few stumbling steps back as he climbed out of the car.
Zach reached for him when he stood and Gus took him from Harley. “Night Gus.” Zach replied hugging him. “Night buddy, you be good for Uncle Frank okay and mommy will see you tomorrow. Zach nodded while Gus rubbed his back; Harley stepped closer and kissed her son’s cheek again before Frank reached over and took him out of Gus’s arms.
Frank stood there holding his nephew as they watched Gus and Harley back out. When they did they both waved at Zach then drove away.
While they drove Gus asked, “What time is it?” Looking at her watch Harley answered, 7:45 why?” “Why don’t we stop and get dinner and eat once we get to the stakeout spot.
“Sounds good.” She replied as they went and picked up food then went to the stakeout spot that gave them an unrestricted view of the house even though they were hidden.
They had only been there for a little bit and were eating when they saw a car pull in the driveway. Putting his cheeseburger down Gus picked up the camera and leaned out the window snapping pictures while Harley called Franklin to let him know the person who was probably the dealer just showed up.
After Harley hung up she just sat and watched him. She couldn’t believe some of the nice things he’d done for her. No man had ever thought of her first. When he turned Gus saw that she was looking at him. Reaching over he caressed her cheek with his fingers
“What is it Coop?”
“Why did you do that?” she asked. “Do what?” “Drive over to Frank’s.” she asked.
He smiled, “Because I saw your face after you hung up from talking to Frank earlier and I could see that you were sad about not being able to see Zach before he went to sleep. I wanted to see you smile.” He replied.
Watching the house as the continued eating they sat in silence. When Harley’s phone rang she answered, “Hello?”
“Harley, its Phillip we need to talk.” He stated.
“I can’t now, I’m working Phillip.” She replied. Gus turned to look at her when he heard who it was; she looked at him then he continued to watch the house as he heard Harley’s end of the conversation.
“What do you mean working? Where’s Zach?” he asked. “Phillip, I’m a cop remember – that’s my job. She said sarcastically making Gus smile. “As for Zach he’s with Frank for the night.” She replied as she leaned her head back and closed her eyes
“I CAN’T tal--.” She started to say but was interrupted. “Is he with you?” “If you mean Gus, yes he is.” She answered.
“I still can’t believe you let him near my son last week.” Phillip replied. “We’ll Phillip I was sick and needed help.” He cut her off “why didn’t you call me, your dad, or Frank?” Taking a deep breath Harley exhaled, “We have been through this before remember, when you called me to chew me out. I don’t wanna go through it again I will say again Gus volunteered to help me. He took care of Zach and ME!” Harley said slamming her phone shut then looked over at Gus.
Gus looked up seeing she’d leaned her head back and closed her eyes again he asked softly as he lay his hand over hers
“What happened honey?”
She knew what he was asking and realizing she wanted him to know she told him about Alan- Michael and Phillip. When she finished he said,
“I really can’t say anything on Alan-Michael but Harley it was Phillip’s fault not yours I’m not to fond of him myself.” He watched her as she gave a weak smile as he continued, “but I can say the one great thing Phillip left you is your little boy.”
“Now you see why I just can’t risk taking a change with you?” she asked “I’ve been hurt and I don’t think I could go through that again.”
He nodded, “But that doesn’t mean I don’t want to stop being there for you.”
Not sure exactly what to say she didn’t say anything for a minute. Then she replied, “Why don’t you get some sleep Gus, I’ll take the first watch. I’ll wake you up if anything happens.” He nodded as he shut his eyes and went to sleep and Harley watched the house as people frequently came and went.
Sometime later, Harley noticed a flurry of activity; checking her watch she saw that it was 3:00 a.m. Shaking Gus hard he came awake
“What?” he as groggily.
“Major activity at the house look?” she said pointing out his window. When he turned he saw it and grabbed the camera and started snapping pictures. They watched 10-20 people come and go. After he put the camera down Gus said turning
“My guess is with that many people coming and going at once means that the dealer must have a new batch and the people we saw earlier were the workers that were to let suppliers know when the new stuff is ready or people coming to get the last of the previous stuff, with that many now its suppliers most likely.”
She nodded as they watched what looked to be a well organized bee hive. After it began to slow down Gus looked at her and saw how tired she was. He grabbed a payday from the sack between them and tore it open then said
“Harley, why don’t you get sleep now I’ll watch from here on out alright?” he said. “I’d like that, if you’re sure.” She answered.
“I am, just close down for awhile and sleep sweetie.” He replied. While she made herself comfortable in the passenger seat she watched him shrug out of his jacket and lay it over her. She opened her eyes and snuggled in his jacket and whispered as she drifted off
“You’re not --.”
He smiled when she didn’t finish the sentence but he knew what she was trying to say. “No sweetie I’m not the man you believe me to be and I want to show you that.”
Watching her for a few minutes in silence he whispered, “Your ex’s thought only of them and didn’t see what they had in you, but I want to take care of you and I want to show you that you come first with me and that it’s okay to love again.”
For the rest of the night Gus watched the house and at sunrise he drove Harley home.
The Man Who Loves... Chapter 4
When Harley walked in the office late that afternoon she didn’t see Gus at his desk and turned to the nearest officer, “Where’s Det. Aitoro?” He looked at her, “He and Chief Franklin are in the interrogation room.” The officer replied. Harley nodded and headed there. She stopped when she heard voices and she heard Franklin say her name.
Slipping into the room next to them she turned the lights off and flipped the switch for the mike and listened.
“Alright Aitoro what’s going on with you and Cooper.” Franklin asked.
“What do you mean?”
“I mean I’ve noticed how the two of you look at each other.” Franklin replied. “And if the two of you have been together I can reprimand Cooper since she’s the senior detective.” As Harley listened she covered her face with her hands and shook her head.
“Oh, chief don’t do that, we haven’t been together I promise.” Gus said. “Tell me why I shouldn't.” Franklin said.
“Because...” Gus started to say.
“Start explaining Aitoro or as much as I hate to I’ll reassign you both different partners.”
“I love her chief.” Gus said softly.
Franklin pulled out a chair across from Gus and sat down then crossed his arms over his chest, “I’m listening.” He said.
“I love her.” Gus repeated.
Looking up, he sensed Harley was near and stood up and began slowly pacing and walking as he talked
“I love her, I’m head over heels in love with her and I’ve loved her since the day that I, the moment that I saw her.” Gus began as he walked over to the glass and laying his fingers on the glass and continued to talk to the chief. On the other side Harley placed her fingers against his and listened
“I can’t stop thinking about her when we are apart and I can’t stop feeling the way I do when we are not together. When we are together; it doesn’t matter.” Gus replied softly as he glanced up. Harley felt the tears flood her eyes as she turned off the mike, turned the lights on and walked out the door. Feeling all these emotions well up she took a deep breath and sat down at her desk.
Ten minutes later, when Gus and Franklin walked back in Harley looked up and both men saw her eyes as she jumped up and ran out of the station.
“Go ahead Gus; I’ll see you both tomorrow.” Franklin said letting him know he could have the rest of the day off. Nodding Gus took off at a dead run after Harley.
Reaching the parking lot he looked around for her car but didn’t see it. Gus climbed in his car and drove to the hotel; he’d call her from there. Once he was at the hotel he climbed out and walked to his room. When he turned the corner to his room he stopped, feet frozen to the floor when he saw her.
“Harley?” he asked when he saw her sitting on the floor by his door. When she looked at him he saw the tears on her cheeks. Holding his hand out Gus whispered
“Ah baby come here.”
Gus watched as she stood and ran the few feet that separated them. Swaying with her as he balanced Harley was caught in Gus’s strong protective hold as he held her and she buried herself in his arms. While he held her he felt the side of his neck wet with tears.
“Let’s go inside ok?”
She nodded as he kept one arm around her and dug in his pocket for the key with the other. Once they were inside Gus slipped out of his jacket and pulled Harley to him as he saw tears brimming her eyes again. Pulling away from Gus just enough to look at him she whispered
“You love me, you really love me?”
Taking her face in his hands he softy answered, “Yes, I really love you sweetheart. “I heard you talking to the chief Gus.” “I know. I sensed you were near.” He said smiling. “I don’t know if I can do this?”
“We’ll take it slow I promise. I want to ask you something Harley?” Gus asked.
“What?” Harley answered.
“Based on what you heard why did you come here?” he asked slowly.
“I don’t know?” she said on a shaky breath.
“Take my hand babe and look at me.” Gus said holding his hand out. Slipping her hand in his she looked at him. “I think you do.” he replied.
“Because I trust you.”
He rubbed his thumb over her hand as she continued, “I’m afraid I’ll be hurt again.” She replied.
“Honey I know Phillip hurt you and I wish I could take the hurt away but I can’t. I want the chance to love you the way you should be loved. I know I might hurt you at times but I’ll want the chance to make it right. I want to show you it’s alright to have faith in love again” Gus said.
Laying her hand over his heart, she caressed his face “Show me.” She said quietly as he kissed her.
Walking with her to the side of the bed Gus flipped the covers back and sat her on the bed. When she reached for him he looked at her, “Let me do this for you, only you.”
Slowly he kneeled in front of her he kissed her as he did then rid her of her clothes. When she tried to touch him again he shook his head and just looked at her.
“Do you know how beautiful you are Harley?” he asked; when she shook her head he smiled.
Standing he picked her up in his arms and lay her in the middle of the bed then rid himself of his clothes. Going to her he gave her an earth shattering kiss then smiling in her eyes he whispered
“You are SO Beautiful sweetheart.” Then he proceeded to show her just how beautiful she was. As their desire took over he saw the tears glistening in her eyes as he kissed her.
As their breathing slowed Harley traced his face with her fingers. “Did you mean what you said to the chief?” she asked “Every word.” Gus answered kissing her fingers. Feeling her shiver he jumped up and went to get a shirt for her.
When he came back he gave her a shirt and she slipped it on. Wrapping his arms around her she laid her head on his shoulder
“I love you beautiful.” Gus replied placing a soft kiss on her lips. “We’ll take it slow okay.” She nodded as he held her closer and when he saw her getting sleepy he said
“Get some sleep baby, we’ll talk later.” He held her as she drifted off.
“I promise Harley you’ll always have me….”
The Man Who Loves... Chapter 5
Harley sat on the blanket watching Zach play while she leaned back against the tree. She’d promised him they’d go to the park today and he was so excited. When they’d gotten there he had dragged her with him as they went on the swings, the slide and she’d even kicked the soccer ball around with him.
Eventually she’d told him to play; she was going to be sitting over on the blanket if he needed her. She watched Zach for a little bit but then thought about Gus. Ever since that night in his hotel room he’s done little things for her. Harley couldn’t help but smile when she remembered what she saw on her desk the next day. She had walked in that morning and gone to her desk but stopped when she’d seen the two roses lying there, one red and one yellow and a note lying between it that read
Red is for love and yellow is for friendship. You are that to me and so much more. I love you I really do.
She’d slipped the note in her pocket and waited for him to come back to his desk. Ever since then he’d come over to see her and spend time with Zach which would lead to him staying for dinner with the two of them.
Gus leaned against a tree a few feet behind her and just watched her. He’d known they’d be here but he’d wanted to give them time together before coming. Zach had gotten used to seeing him around which is what he wanted but he knew that Harley still wanted times of just her and Zach so that was what he’d given her. She had asked him to meet them for lunch so she’d packed enough for three. Pushing himself off the tree, he walked up placing a kiss on the top of her head, “Hey Babe.” He said falling to his knees as he sat back on his heels. “Hey honey.” She said smiling as she softly kissed him. She then watched while Gus pushed his sunglasses to the top of his head. “I wondered when you’d get here.”
“I wanted to give you and Zach time together.” Gus replied. He saw her eyes fill with surprise at what he’d said. “Really?” she asked. He nodded, “Of course, now I’m hungry can we eat?” he asked. Laughing she nodded and called Zach over telling him it was time for lunch.
When Zach saw him he ran to him and Gus caught him in a tight hug. “Hey little man, how are ya?” he asked the three year old as Harley pulled out the food.
As they ate Gus listened as Zach told him everything they’d done at the park that day. Watching them Harley realized just how much Zach had come to mean to Gus. She turned and watched the man she’d come to trust. She thought about when she’d actually fallen in love with him.
It was the day at the station when he’d pulled Danny Santos in for a busted taillight. She’d walked in the room to speak with him and Danny had told her he was free to leave. Gus had looked at her as they were leaving. It was at that moment she’d seen a broken man and it was at moment she could see his love for her and Zach. She realized also at that moment when she looked at him; she’d fallen in love with him.
She was brought back to the present when he called her name.
“Harley?”
I’m sorry honey what’d you say?” she asked. “I said Zach’s asleep.” He replied as she looked down and saw Zach laying on his stomach sound asleep.
She watched as Gus stood up and walked to her; then sitting behind her leaned against the tree with his legs stretched and her between them; she leaned back against him.
“Where were you?” Gus asked.
“I was thinking about when I fell in love with you?” she answered.
Not expecting her answer he froze “when you what?”
“When I fell in love with you?” Harley repeated. Gus tilted her chin where he could see her eyes.
“I love you Gus.”
Not saying a word his lips crashed with hers as he kissed her. “When’d you fall in love with me?” he asked after he broke the kiss.
“After I saw your face; when you decided to give up the vendetta.” Harley said softly. They sat in silence for a while just enjoying being with each other. Gus could tell Harley had relaxed against him and was almost asleep when his beeper went off and woke her.
“I’m sorry baby.” He said as he grabbed the beeper turning it off then checking it. Pulling his cell phone out he called the station. Ten minutes later he hung up, “I have to go in.” he answered.
She nodded, “I need to get going to.” Standing Gus helped her up then leaned down and picked up Zach who was still asleep,
“I’ll put him in the car for you.” He replied as Harley grabbed the blanket and basket and they walked to the car.
After unlocking the door, Gus leaned in and fastened Zach in his car seat. Just as he climbed from the car Zach opened his eyes, “Gus?” he called. Leaning back in he stroked the boy’s cheek he answered,
“I’m here but I have to go to work now. You be good for mommy and I’ll see you later ok?” Gus stated then climbed back out as Zach closed his eyes.
Hugging Harley he said, “I’ll call you later.” She nodded, “Be careful sweetie.” He smiled, “Always.” He replied then kissed her. Jumping in his car he waited till Harley climbed in hers and drove away before he turned and went in the opposite direction toward the station.
Station
“I’m here Chief what’s going on.” Gus asked when he walked in the chief’s office and closed the door.
“It’s about the surveillance you and Cooper did for me.” Franklin said.
“What’d you find?”
“Based on what was in the photos this guy here--.” Franklin said pointing to a man in the picture, “--is a supplier to a supplier and he reports to Salerno.”
“Do we know who this guy is?” Gus asked.
“No we’re running checks on the guy now.” Franklin replied. “Are you going to tell Harley?” Gus asked. “I’ll let you tell her, I wasn’t calling her because I knew she was with her son.” Franklin answered.
Gus nodded then for the rest of the day he worked with Franklin to get information. After they’d gotten the information Gus went and gathered Salerno’s files and for the rest of the day went through them.
“Chief look at this?” Gus said as he walked in the office.
“What?”
“Apparently Salerno runs a major drug ring and has been doing this for years. He runs marijuana and heroin mostly.” Gus said “So more than likely it’s a heroin supplier?” Franklin asked. “That’d be my guess.” Gus replied.
“Ok I’ll get to officers for undercover as buyers.” Franklin said.
“Before you start Gus I want you and Harley behind the scenes with this, the undercover officers will report to the two of you.”
For the rest of the day and into that evening Gus was in meetings with Franklin and the two officers’ that were going under cover as buyers.
When Gus walked back to his desk he sat down heavily then looked at his watch he saw it was 11:00
“Go home Gus.” the Chief said standing by the desk. “You can fill Harley in tomorrow then you both can work on it.
Gus nodded and stood up and with a tired “See ya” left the station
The Man Who Loves... Chapter 5 Continued
Getting in the car the only place he wanted to go was Harley’s so he drove there. Harley was sitting on the couch when her cell rang
“Hello?”
“Baby it’s me; I’m outside let me in.” Gus said tiredly as he hung up.
Going to the door she opened it for him. “I didn’t wanna wake Zach.” She nodded as he put his arms around her and just held her. Taking his hand she guided him to the couch when she saw how tired he was.
“Have you been at the station all this time?” Harley wondered.
Nodding he replied, “Yeah.” While he ran a hand over bleary eyes.
Watching him, “I think you left a pair sweat pants here the other day, go change while I warm something up for you. She replied as she sent him upstairs then went to the kitchen. When she came back fifteen minutes later Gus was sitting on the couch sound asleep. She hated to wake him but he needed food.
Sitting by him she rubbed his arm and watched him wake up, “try to eat.” He nodded as he began to eat and tried to fill her in on what had happened at the station.
“Therewillbetwoofficersworking—.” He said but she interrupted him.
“Gus; honey your too exhausted to fill me in; your words are running together you’re so tired.” Harley said. “See if you can finish eating before you absolutely crash. I’ll be back in a second.” He nodded as he watched her leave.
Fifteen minutes later, when she came back carrying blankets and a pillow Harley saw he was curled up with his head on the couch; facing her asleep.
Moving the tray to the table she caressed his face as she said, “Honey.” Slowly opening his eyes he looked at her,
“I’m sorry baby I’m wiped out, I’ll go.” He said standing.
“Sweetie, you’re too tired to drive. You’re not going anywhere.” Harley said. “You can sleep on the couch tonight.” He looked at her puzzled as she fixed the blankets then pulled him to the couch and pushed him to lie down.
“I can’t Zach.” Gus started to say. “Your tired honey its okay.” She said covering him up. Kneeling by him she kissed his cheek.
“Thanks.” He whispered.
“I’ll be out of here in a minute; I’m going to take this stuff to the kitchen. Just close down honey.” Harley whispered as he watched her walk toward the kitchen then closed his eyes.
After Harley had washed the dishes she put them in the cabinet and turned the light off. Walking quietly to the couch; she checked on Gus and saw that he was asleep. Leaning over she placed a soft kiss on his lips
“Good night my white knight.” She whispered then turned and walked to the stairs.
She stopped when she heard him, “Harley?” Going back to him; ran her hands over his hair, “I thought you were asleep?” she asked.
“I was but I wanted to kiss you goodnight.”
Smiling Harley knelt by him as he turned to face her. Wrapping a hand around her neck; he pulled her to him as he kissed her.
“I love you.” He whispered after they broke the kiss. “I love you too Gus. Get some sleep.” Harley replied as he closed his eyes.
While she started upstairs she couldn’t help but smile as she thought of the man sleeping on her couch…
The Man Who Loves... Chapter 6
Slowly opening his eyes Gus lay there trying to focus on where he was; he knew this wasn’t his hotel room.
He turned when the bright sun coming through the blinds on the window fell across his face. He saw the picture of Harley with Zach on the mantle and realized he was in her house. Throwing the covers back he looked at his watch and saw it was 6:00. Knowing Zach wouldn’t be up yet Gus went upstairs to Harley.
Reaching the top he went to check on Zach and saw that he had kicked the covers off. Gus carefully covered him up then kissed his cheek and closing the door went Harley’s room. Walking to her side he knelt and watched her sleep for a few minutes before caressing her face gently.
“Harley?”
When she didn’t move he laid a hand on her cheek and lightly touched her lips with his. As she opened her eyes he pulled back. “Gus what’s the matter?” she asked sleepily.
“Nothing, I just wanted to let you know I was leaving and I’ll see you at work.” Gus replied.
“You’re leaving?” she asked sitting up.
He nodded, “Yeah, I don’t think it’s a good idea for me to be here when Zach gets up. Thanks for letting me stay last night.” He said.
“I could see how tired you were.” She said softly as she hugged him. Running his hands over her hair, “Go back to sleep baby, there’s still time before Zach’s up.” Gus replied standing as Harley lay back down. Once he covered her up she took his hand
“Can I have my good morning kiss now?” she asked. Smiling he leaned toward her and let himself sink into her as he kissed her. Breaking the kiss he whispered
“Good Morning Beautiful.”
She smiled, “I’ll see you at work honey.” Gus nodded as he watched her snuggle under the covers then he went downstairs. Before he left Gus went to the kitchen and made the coffee and set the timer for 7:00 then grabbing his clothes from the night before and locking the door jumped in his car and drove to his hotel.
Station
Harley went to her desk as soon as she walked in and set her stuff down. She was pulling a report for a write up on a case when Chief Franklin called her in his office.
“Harley, come in here please.”
Laying the report down; she walked in his office and sat down. “I wanted to fill you and Gus in on the drug operation. “Where’s Gus?” she asked. “He’s talking to the officers that are undercover; he’ll be here in a minute.” She nodded as Franklin passed her the file to look over while they waited for Gus.
Harley had just begun to read when Gus walked in. “Sorry chief, hey Coop.” he said as he stood behind her. “Did you tell her the plan Aitoro?” Franklin wondered. Shaking his head he moved to sit beside her, “I was too wiped out last night.” Gus answered.
“Well, someone tell me please?” Harley interjected.
The chief laughed, “I told Gus yesterday I want the two of you working behind the scenes on this case. Vinnie Salerno is running a drug ring specializing in marijuana and heroin. Based on the surveillance you did for me we are looking for a supplier named Zeke Johnson, he’s one of the head suppliers that deal directly with Salerno. I have pulled two officers who are going to be working undercover as “newbie” drug buyers. They will get the word to the other dealers that they are looking for what Salerno manufactures and this will start drug buys between our guys and Don Salerno.”
“What’d you get from our guys Gus?”
“Well each of our people made contact with a different dealer so that it won’t look suspicious. They made the first buy last night and the dealers told them that they’d be in touch when they had more stuff.” He replied
Harley looked surprised when Gus in front of Franklin took her hand and held it and looked at her with love in his eyes. She looked to see if the chief had noticed, when she saw him watching them he smiled but didn’t say anything.
“Um – um um, chief were do we come in?” Harley asked trying not to turn red or loose it in front of the boss.
“Our undercover guys will report to you any strange actions their dealers may take per whatever Salerno’s demands are. They will each write up detailed reports of any of the conversations they have with the dealers. Should something big happen you and Gus will go on surveillance to watch our guys and see what happens. “But I don’t want Salerno to get wind of you guys working this case, that’s why I pulled in the other officers.” He answered
“What about the drugs our guys get?” Gus asked.
“I personally have set aside an evidence bag strictly for that, the drugs we get will be put in that bag and kept under lock and key in the evidence room. Our guys will bring what they get to either of you or me and then we will but it away.” Franklin answered then showed them where he kept the key. Harley listened as the chief and Gus discussed what would be the next step.
As he listened Gus glanced at Harley and noticed that she looked like she was in a daze. When the Franklin dismissed them Harley only nodded as she walked out in front of Gus. When he turned and walked in their office she slapped his arm as soon as he’d closed the door.
“Why did you do that!” she said through clenched teeth. Before he could answer she turned and left the office just as Gus caught the brightness in her eyes.
He turned toward his desk and sat down and tried to work. When she didn’t come back thirty minutes later he pushed back from his desk to go look for her a female officer walked in
“Gus? I think you need to come with me?” she said as he followed her to the women’s restroom. When they got there he saw Frank talking to Harley through the door.
“I asked the officer to get you. What’d you do to her Aitoro?” Frank snarled. “I didn’t do anything.” He replied as he stood next to her brother and tapped on the door.
“Harley, its Gus… what’s wrong?” he asked. Inside Harley sat in the corner holding on to her knees and crying harder when she heard his voice.
Without thinking Gus handed Frank his jacket and with determination looked at him and said
“Go away Frank!”
“You can’t tell --.” Frank started to say but was cut off by Gus as he replied, “— I can and I did just Go away.” Frank fumed as he walked away without another word. With a quick look around Gus slipped in to the ladies restroom.
When he turned he saw she was staring at him, “You can’t be in here.” She whispered.
He walked to her and knelt before her, “What’s wrong babe?” he asked laying his hand over hers. Pulling her to stand with him they stared at each other; when Gus heard the door open he said matter of factly
“Use the other restroom downstairs, and now get out.”
When the woman didn’t move he repeated with a growl, never taking his eyes from Harley’s, “Get Out!!!!!”
When the door was closed he went and locked it. Walking to her he heard her say softly,
“I’m afraid this is all a dream.” She said taking a deep breath then continued, “I’m not supposed to find someone like you… Someone that puts me first.” She said
“What scared you honey?” Gus asked quietly
“Phillip never looked at me the way you did and held my hand as if you wanted to caress it.” Taking her hand he walked with her in front of the mirror and wrapped his arms around her.
“Who do see in the mirror?” he asked. “You and me.” She answered
“I’ll tell you what I see?” he replied. “I see a woman who is amazing, loving, a great mom, a wonderful sister and friend, a loving daughter, kind, gorgeous, amazing --.” Harley stopped him, “You already said amazing.” She replied staring at his eyes in the mirror. He smiled, “-- she’s my best friend, my lover, and the woman I love with all my heart.” Gus finished.
“But you’re not --.” She started to say but stopped when he turned her around. “Honey I’m not Phillip, Do you remember me telling you I want to show you it’s okay to have faith in love again?” he asked.
When she nodded he leaned his forehead against hers, “Then let me, I know you’re scared that something will happen and I’ll walk away from you and Zach but that won’t happen, I’m here and I love you.”
“Your mine, do you understand and I’ll do whatever I can to heal your heart.” He replied as his mouth claimed hers in a kiss that spoke of passion, desire and most of all love, trust, and forever.
When he broke the kiss she hugged him tight as he softly ran his hand over her hair. “You wanna go to the office now?” When she nodded he turned hugging her tight as they went to the door and unlocked it then walked out the door.
Look back at him, “I can’t believe you came in the woman’s restroom.” She replied as she laughed.
Thw Man Who Loves... Chapter 7
Harley and Gus were sitting at Company with Zach before Phillip came to pick him up for his weekend with him. As they were talking Zach kept looking between mommy and Gus and smiling, he liked having him there. He would play with him, read him stories and take away the scaries when he had bad dreams.
Just as they finished, Phillip and Beth walked in and over to them. “Hey Harley, Zach.” He replied. “You ready to go Zach?” He shook his head no and climbed in Gus’s lap and held on to him. Holding him tight he and Harley glanced at each other as he said
“What is it little man?”
“I want to stay with you and mommy.” Zach whispered. “Mommy and I will see you Sunday, we promise.” He answered as he hugged him. Phillip and Beth watched in shock as Zach held on to Gus. “If I have a scary dream can I call you?” the little boy asked. “Sure but daddy will be there.” Gus answered. “You need to go with daddy now okay and we’ll see you soon, kiss mommy one more time.” Gus said as he stood up and held Zach for him to kiss Harley.
Without a word Gus passed Zach to Phillip then looked at Harley, “I have to go babe.” She nodded and watched him leave. Turning Phillip handed Zach to Beth and said, “I’ll get us lunch, you go ahead and take him home.” She nodded as Phillip walked away to go get lunch. Beth picked up Zach’s bag left Company.
Realizing Gus left his coat with her Harley jumped up knowing he must have had to leave before he said something to Phillip. Hoping to catch him she ran to the door but stopped after she opened it because she heard Phillip ask Gus
“What have you done to my son?”
“I haven’t done anything Phillip.” Gus replied as his anger and protectiveness where Zach was concerned sparked in his eyes.
“You must have done something when he’d rather stay with you and Harley than his own father.” Phillip demanded.
“He is three years old Phil, I live with him and his mother of course he sees me more than you. I’m there for him.” Gus answered.
“Humph” Phillip replied as he stared at Gus.
“Let me ask you, what’s Zach’s favorite bedtime story?” Gus asked. “Beth usually reads to the boys.” Phillip answered.
“The Poky Little Puppy. I know that because Harley or I read it to him.” Phillip stared at him. “Or when he as a bad dream he likes to be held or sung to until he isn’t so scared anymore. Let me ask this, what does he like to drink with his lunch most days? Do you know that Phillip?”
With one softly spoken word he shook his head, “no.” then turned and started to walk away but Gus’s next words stopped him
“You are his father Phillip and always will be but I am the one man that’s been a constant in his life and has been there when he’s needed someone to wipe away his tears, or make him feel better, play with him, or take away the scaries. If you won’t take time to be there I will and I am.” Gus answered.
Without another word Phillip walked to his car and drove away.
“Chocolate milk.” Harley whispered.
Gus turned and went to her, “How long have you been standing there?” “Since Phillip ask to know what you have done with his son.” She replied.
“I’m sorry babe, I just couldn’t stand hearing him think just because Zach wanted to stay with us; that little boy did something wrong.” Gus answered just as Harley leaned in and kissed him
“Thank you.” She replied when the kiss was broken. “You know I’ll do anything for you honey.” He replied.
“We have to go are you ready?” She nodded, “Wait I was bringing you your coat here, put it on before you freeze.” She said as she helped him into it. Hand in hand they left for the station.
The Man Who Loves... Chapter 8
Station
Gus and Harley sat at their desks going over the notes the undercover guys had supplied for them.
“Okay so we know that that the dealers have made contact with Salerno about two more “newbies” for his drug list.” Harley replied. Gus nodded as he slowly linked his fingers with hers. “Yeah we know from some of the conversations – the dealers keep list of new contacts and when they have a new contact the dealers go let Salerno know so he can add the name to his books.”
“What about the stakeout we went on two nights ago Gus?” Harley asked.
“What about it?” he asked.
“It just reminded me of the first stakeout we went on for this case. It was relatively calm until about 2 a.m. when the dealers and suppliers fill up there stashes.” Harley replied. “Yeah I noticed that.” Gus answered.
As they were going through the files the two undercover officers walked through the bullpen and went into the chief’s office.
Ten minutes later, the chief walked out and over to them. “Guys come in my office for minute.” He asked then turned and they followed him. When they walked in they sat down as the undercover guys began to fill them in on the conversations they’d had with their dealers two nights earlier.
“Okay MacDonald why don’t you start.” Franklin asked. He nodded, “My dealer called me and told me to meet him in the park so got ready and went to meet him. He told me that he has to meet with his contact “Johnson” in a few weeks to get the new batch of stuff, when he has it he’ll give me a call.” MacDonald said.
“Zeke Johnson?” Harley asked. “That would be my guess.” He answered.
“Did he say anything else about Johnson?” Gus wondered.
“Nothing other than when my dealer got the stuff from him he’d call me.”
“What about you Andrews?” Chief Franklin asked. “Well my guy basically told me the same thing Chief, but he didn’t tell me the name of who he had to meet to get his supply for me but he’d call me when he had it.” Andrews replied.
The chief nodded “Alright Guys good work, if you get any calls in the next several weeks let me or these guys know.” They nodded as they left and returned to their office.
“Okay so we have to wait several weeks before the next contact between our guys and Salerno.” Gus stated.
Franklin nodded, “Now we wait….”
The Man Who Loves... Chapter 9
“So what you do with Grandpa today little man?” Gus asked as he carried Zach in the house once Harley opened the door.
“We went to the playground.” Zach replied excitedly. “You did, what’d you do?” he asked smiling. “We went on the swings, the slide, then he took me to the park and we kicked the ball around then we went and had lunch before going back to Comp’ny.” He answered grinning.
“Wow! Sounds like you and Grandpa had a busy day?” Gus asked setting Zach on his feet.
“Uh huh.” the little boy answered already distracted by his toy trucks.
“Sweetie, can you stay with him while I go take a shower?” Harley asked. Gus nodded, “Yeah hon go ahead.” “I’ll make it quick.” She answered as she started upstairs and disappeared from his view.
While he waited for Harley to come back down he loosened his tie then walked to the kitchen and got something to drink then coming back to the couch he watched Zach play. Fifteen minutes later, she came down drying her hair with a towel. Leaning over she kissed Gus and he smiled as he ran his hands through her wet hair
“I love the smell of your hair.” He whispered as he held handfuls of it and buried his face in her hair. “Matter fact sweetheart I love everything about you.” He said softly as his lips captured hers. When the kiss was broken he didn’t move for a minute as she held on to his shoulders to steady herself.
“You can go take your shower now while I start dinner.” Harley said as he walked around to her. Wrapping his arms around her he placed his lips by her ear
“We’ll pick this up later.” He whispered then dropped a kiss on her lips then went upstairs.
Smiling Harley just stood there for a minute with the goofy grin on her face before she said, “He’s mine, he’s really mine.” With another glance toward the stairs she went to the kitchen.
After they ate dinner, Gus and Harley sat on the couch talking while Zach played for a little longer. Taking hold of his arm she turned it where she could see his watch. Seeing the time she sat up
“Zach, bath time baby.” She said. He looked at her then ran upstairs and she followed him. A little while later Gus went upstairs to Zach’s room just as the little boy was climbing in bed. “Will you read me my story?” he asked. “You bet scoot over.” Gus replied as he picked up the book and got on the bed as Zach got comfy and listened as he began to read. Harley smiled as she pointed downstairs and Gus nodded and she closed the door a little.
Out in the hall Harley stood by the door and leaning her head against the wall she closed her eyes; listening while the man that was showing her it was okay to open her heart read a bedtime story to her three year old.
Thirty minutes later, Gus walked in the kitchen and found her washing the last of the dinner dishes. Picking up a towel he went to her and dried the dishes she had there and put them in the cabinet. When she finished he held her still as he wrapped his arms around her from behind. They were silent for a few minutes then she turned to face him as her lips met his. Backing her until her legs hit the counter he lifted Harley and sat her on the counter their lips never parting.
Breaking the kiss Gus stared at her as he heard the words of the song that was playing on the radio behind them. Smiling he kissed his way over her face, dropping gently kisses along her jaw. As they kissed they slowly felt themselves drowning as he pulled her to him as she wrapped her legs around him and he carried her to the couch. They each wanted closer and he managed to rid them of the clothes except for his shirt she was wearing.
Harley was about to loose it with the kisses and his hands moving over her. She pulled his face to hers and kissed him with all the love she had. Seeing the love and desire in her eyes Gus smiled and as their desire took over
“I love you beautiful!” he whispered.
As they lay there quietly in each others’ arms they looked at each other as Harley laughed softly and said, “I love you.” “I love you too.” Gus said. “Why don’t we go upstairs to our bed sweetie?” He replied. She nodded and together they picked up the discarded clothes and hand in hand went to their room.
Once they were in their room, Gus put his pajama pants on and climbed in bed then watched as Harley stepped in to pajama pants but leaving on his shirt climbed in next to him.
With her head resting on his shoulder he thought of her and the words of the song he’d heard and smiling to himself held her close as they drifted off to sleep.
The Man Who Loves... Chapter 10 (Conclusion)
Gus smiled as he thought of Harley, he couldn’t help but picture her at the mall with Cassie; both carrying many shopping bags. He chuckled even as his cell phone rang.
When he answered it he grinned. “Hey sweetheart.”
“Gus hey I’ll be home in about ten minutes.” Harley replied “Okay see you in a few.” He said then hung up. Going to the kitchen he checked on their dessert then grabbed the lighter from his pocket and went back to the family room and began to light the candles he’d placed on the coffee table next to the note.
Finishing downstairs he headed to the bedroom and started lighting those candles and getting everything ready. Five minutes later he heard her open the door.
When Harley walked in she stopped when she saw the candle light. “Gus?” she called. When he didn’t answer her eyes landed on the coffee table and saw the note. Walking over she picked up the note and began to read,
Honey,
I’m home; I have a surprise I’ll be waiting.
G.
Dropping her bag by the stairs she ran up to their room. When she opened the door her breath caught as she saw him standing and waiting for her wearing black pajama pants. Going to her he picked her up as he kissed her and carried her toward the bathroom. Seeing what he’d done brought tears to her eyes as she saw the candlelight flicker and a bubble bath drawn. Looking at him she saw him smiling as he whispered
“Your bath awaits milady.”
“G--?” she started to ask as he set her on her feet but he stopped her as he placed a finger across her lips, “Just enjoy and slip this on when you finish.” He replied laying the matching shirt that went with his pants on the corner of the sink. With a kiss he left her alone.
While she enjoyed her bath Gus got the room ready. Turning the covers on the bed back he smiled. Going downstairs he turned the oven down to warm so the dessert would be okay until they were ready for it then grabbed the picnic basket. Walking through the family room he picked up a blanket; throwing it over his shoulder headed upstairs. Sitting the basket down Gus placed the blanket on the floor and then going to the closet got the candles and placed them around the room.
After that was done he found a radio station that played love songs and made sure the volume was low. Gus went to the bathroom door and tapped,
“Baby, dinner’s ready.” He said. “Okay.” She said through the door. Turning he went to stand on the blanket to wait for her.
When Harley walked out of the bathroom she stopped seeing what he’d done to the bedroom. Gus turned to smile and say something but no words came while he looked at her. She grinned
“Do you like?” she asked modeling his black shirt for him. All he could do was nod as he took in the sight of her from her wet hair to her in the shirt.
Walking to her he gave her an earth shattering kiss. Breaking the kiss they stood their staring into each others eyes for a minute and Harley could feel herself drowning in his eyes while he looked at her; she could stare into those eyes forever.
Taking her hand he let her to the blanket and sat down. As they were sitting down she saw the basket and smiled. “Why?” she wondered.
“Why what?” Gus asked when he saw her face. She made her hands in a wide circle to indicate everything. “Well two reasons babe, 1. I thought it would be nice; I wanted to do this for you and 2. I thought we could have some “us” time and so we have a romantic picnic.” He answered as he leaned in and softly kissed her lips.
“I love you.” He stated as he began pulling food out.
When she saw what he was pulling from the basket she had to laugh, “Sandwiches?” she asked. With a wink he answered, “Yeah thought we’d have a fun romantic picnic!”
While they ate they talked and laughed and Harley realized he had taught her it was okay to love again and her heart was his. When they finished she looked at him, “What no dessert?” she asked laughingly.
Looking at her, “Do you want it now?” Shaking her head no; she replied, “Not yet let’s listen to the music for a while.” He nodded as he stood and went to the radio and turned up the volume. Turning he went to her and sat down behind her. Harley leaned against him when he sat down and as they listened Gus ran his fingers through her hair. She turned her face into his neck and breathed in the scent that she could only distinctly say was Gus.
In the background, Gus and Harley could hear, “Hey everybody this is Melanie gonna be with you from now until one a.m. If ya want to hear a love song give me a call. Stay with us.”
Resting her head back on his shoulder again she rubbed his arm as she replied, “I love this program.” “Do you?” he asked. When she nodded he smiled. A little later he said, “Why don’t I go get dessert.” She grinned as she watched him leave the room.
Once in the kitchen Gus spooned up chocolate mousse then headed back toward the family room. Passing through the room he checked the clock and smiled when he saw the time; going to the stairs he went back to Harley.
“What'd ya bring me, what'd ya bring me!” Harley asked.
He couldn’t help but laugh as he watched her eyes dance. He loved when she was happy. “Well I brought us chocolate mousse.” He answered as he sat back down.
Taking the spoon he fed her a bite and when she closed her eyes dropped a kiss on her lips. When her lips parted he let himself sink in to her. Breaking the kiss he softly said, “You are soo sweet.” He replied grinning. After they ate the dessert they went back to listening to the radio. Turning to where he was looking at her they both heard from the radio:
“A dedication came in to night from Gus to Harley.” When Harley heard that she stared at him, “Gus??” she started to say but he stopped her with a kiss
“Listen.” He said replied as he saw tears in her eyes.
She listened as Melanie continued, “When I talked to him, he is so in love with his lady he loves her so much and he asked me to play a special song for her so Harley if you’re listening this is from your guy. Here ya go Gus; snuggle up with your lady and enjoy!” Melanie’s voice faded and the song began:
If you need someone to take you by the hand And help you heal your broken heart Show you how to find the faith in love again So you can make a brand new start If you’re looking for the man to chase away your clouds And be your morning sun Oh, baby I’m the one.
Believing in tomorrow is so hard When all your yesterdays are filled with pain Trusting in the future isn’t easy When the past is just pouring rain All you need is someone to take away The memory of what he’s done Oh, baby I’m the one
Harley caressed his face, “You have showed me its okay to have faith again, I could have never done that without you.” He shook his head, “you’re strong you would have even without me.” He answered even as they listened.
I’m the one who longs to kiss your lips And hold you tight I’m the one who longs to love you For the rest of your life So if you’re looking for the kind of man who loves Forever and will never run Oh, baby I’m the one
I’m the one who longs to kiss your lips And hold you tight I’m the one who longs to love you For the rest of your life So if you’re looking for the kind of man who loves Forever and will never run Oh, baby I’m the one Oh, baby I’m the one
When the song ended she hugged him tight. “I can’t believe you requested a song for me.” She whispered.
“Harley look at me sweetheart?” he asked.
When she did he held her hand, “I told you I’ll do what I have to heal your heart. You come first with me and always will, never forget that. When you’re happy I’m happy. I will always be here for you and Zach I pro----.” She stopped him with a kiss.
“I know you love me and I love you.” Harley answered breaking the kiss.
When he saw the look in her eyes he picked her up and climbed in bed and together they showed how much they loved each other.
