He watches the door as Sarah walks away and then begins to drift off as sleep begins to take him. As he relaxes he thought he heard his mom & dad come in but didn’t want to open his eyes to find out.
“Where did Sarah go?” Ted wondered as they both went to each stand on the side of the bed. “She probably went to stretch her legs & back as well as get something to eat since she’s been here constantly except for when Jack’s taken her places.” Aubree replied as she placed her hand against Nick’s face.
“Nicky it’s mom, I’m here & so is dad.” His dad, sat down as he took his son’s left hand & gently squeezed, “I’m here son. We’ve both been here the entire time.”
"Mom, Dad?" Alyssa said. coming in the room. Her parent's turned when they heard her, "Sweetheart, we were going to call you later tonight, what are you doing here?"
"Well, after Joanie called her dad and I to tell me about what was going on with Nick, I told her to keep us posted since Daniel and I knew we couldn't leave London immediately because of his business trip. But unfortunately as the weeks passed Daniel could see I wasn't able to concentrate since I was thinking of the family and being here with my brother, which wasn't helping him; so with Daniel's love he told me to come home, but keep him informed on what was going on with Nick."
Ted moved where Alyssa could reach Nick, since this was the first time seeing her big brother like this it was a shock for Alyssa. Her dad held her up, "he's coherent, you can talk to him." She leaned over kissing his cheek and squeezed his hand at the same time. "Nick, it's Alyssa, I'm here. Did you have to go to all this trouble to get me to come home though? You could've just asked ...sheesh! she remarked teasing him. Ted and Aubree laughed. "But seriously, I'll be right here with everyone else when you wake up."
Alyssa turned, "Where's Sarah? Joanie?"
Her dad answered, "Sarah's stretching her legs, the baby needed some exercise and Joanie's in the waiting room with Greg. We've been trading when Sarah needs breaks since someone can stay when she's not here other than that it's only two visitors, with the exception of Sarah, fifteen minutes every hour. Alyssa nodded, "Okay I'm going to find some coffee and go see Joanie again to fill her in on her dad then I'll be back in a bit." Her parents nodded watching her leave. "I'll be glad when Daniel can come home from this trip too, Joanie misses them." Ted stated then saw where his wife was looking.
Aubree pushed her chair up where she was closer to the head of the bed & leaned on the rail, “Son, Sarah is doing okay and so is the baby but she needs you to be here.”
Ted reached over and smoothed Nick’s hair on his forehead, “Do you remember when he called us after he met Sarah?” Aubree laughed, “He was on cloud nine, said he’d found his soul mate.”
Both his parents kept their connection with him while talked to each other about random things. “So, Granddaddy what do you think they’re going to be having next?” his wife asked.
“Well speaking as Granddad I’d love spoil a little girl” Ted said. Aubree chuckled. “Ted honey, if they had a girl your grand-daughter would have her granddaddy wrapped around her little finger.”
“That she would.” He responded grinning. Aubree thought for a minute, “I agree I’d like a grand-daughter but we already have two grandsons so we might get a third.”
Neither of Nick’s parents noticed that he was trying to wake up; he just barely moved his head to the right and saw his mom’s face and listened to her talk to his dad. He closed eyes listening and remembered a conversation he had with her about joining the police force:
“Nick do you realize how dangerous joining the Police Force will be?” his mom asked, as she placed a cup of coffee in front of him when it was just the two of them one morning.“Yes mom I do, but this is something I really want to pursue. You and dad have always taught us kids to go for our dreams.” Nick said. “I know we did, but a police officer, baby?” Nick remembered he’d laughed at the face his mom had made before he continued, “I’m really good at what I already know how to do mama & I’ll be careful, I’ll be smart about it.” He remembered he’d hugged her as she’d said, “Ever since you were nine you were wanting a toy police set so you and your friends could play “Cops & Police, so I think I always figured you’d be a cop eventually. Just promise me you’ll do as you said and be a smart cop that doesn’t take stupid risks.”
He laughed. “Yes mama, I’ll have to take risks that come in the job description.”
She’d lightly slapped his arm laughing herself, “I know that comes with the job description but you don’t have to be a cop that takes stupid risks.”
Nick thought back to the last part of the conversation now as he listened to his mom again, she had reached over and wrapped both arms around him while they had been sitting at the table, “If you want to be a police officer, you will make me and your dad both so proud and we support you fully in whatever you want to pursue. Just always remember I love you son very much.”
Nick could see sister come back in the room when he looked toward his dad, he was glad she was here but he really wanted to see his father’s face so turning his head brought his dad into his eye-line, seeing his dad brought tears to his eyes. Nick let the baritone of his voice flow through him as he remembered back to when he told his dad he had met the girl of his dreams & he’d one day marry.
“You want to talk son?” Ted had asked coming out on the back patio where Nick had been sitting lost in thought. “You have a goofy grin on your face; it must be about a girl.”
Nick blushed as he buried his face in his arms. “Can I tell you about her dad?” “Of course. What’s she like?” Ted had asked gently slapping his son’s shoulder. “Her name is Sarah Wilson, and well, I was undercover and rescued her from a mugger that was beating her up; so I broke cover since my informant didn’t show because she screamed so I found her then got her to a hospital.”
“Is she alright?” his dad wanted to know.” Nick nodded as he continued telling his dad all he knew about Sarah.
“Well that’s all well and good son but she may not be ready.” “I know dad, but we both seem to really like each other and I told her, we’d take it slow, at her pace if and when we start dating. Right now we are just slowly getting to know each other while Josh and I help her with her case.”
“Good idea son. She sounds really special” His dad had said, smiling.
“Sarah is dad, she is. She’s the girl I’ve been waiting for, and if I’m lucky one day I will marry her.”
Nick couldn’t help it, just thinking of Sarah made him happy and that made his heart monitor do the double beep.
Hearing the double beep both his parents and Alyssa turned looking at the monitor, “What’s happening?” Aubree asked in panicked concern. Touching her son’s face she leaned down, “Baby, were here, relax its okay.” She whispered while Nick tried hard to calm so his monitor would go back to normal, so his parents wouldn’t worry.
Sarah with a smile saw her in-laws were still with Nick as she came back into his room; as she stepped in the room she heard the double beep of the heart monitor. Seeing the look on her mother-in-law’s face she was quick to say, “Aubree, he’s okay, I promise. He knows I’m here.” Ted looked over at his son with a puzzled look then at Sarah, “his monitor beeped like that just a couple of minutes before you got here, that’s why we were concerned.” He replied. “Oh okay, he must have been thinking about me, it only does that usually when I come in the room.” She also saw her sister-in-law and they hugged.
Going to the side of the bed she sat down, “Honey, I’m back.” She said softly taking her husband’s hand as Ted stood so she could have the seat he had been using. Ted looked at Aubree and motioned toward the door. “Sarah honey, we’re going back to the waiting room so you can sleep alright.” Her father-in law said. “No, don’t go on my account.” She said just as she felt Nick squeeze her hand.
“Everybody wait.” She replied leaning over to touch his cheek. “Nick, your mom, dad are still with me and Alyssa's here.” She stated as they moved in closer. Very slowly Nick opened his eyes. When he did his parents had tears in their eyes as they grinned.
“When Sarah?” they said in unison. “Earlier today, I thought Jack told you.”
“Well he did, but he said it was only for a minute and might not again until the paralysis faded so we didn’t want to get our hopes up until we talked with you.” She nodded, “Well, he’s fighting as you can see.” She remarked. Nick was slowly taking in his mom and sister's faces, then he turned looking at his dad and his dad saw his eyes fill with tears. “Son, dad’s got you.” Ted said quietly, in his ear leaning over. He saw Nick’s eyes go to Sarah, “We’ll take care of her until you get out of here too. Now we are going to the waiting room so you and Sarah can rest, we love you both.” Nick blinked twice. Sarah chuckled telling them, “That means “Yes,”
Both his parents and Alyssa leaned over kissing his cheek and telling him they loved him then together left the room. Sarah touched his face, “I love you too handsome, you go back to sleep and I’ll be here sleeping next to in the recliner.” She responded opening the recliner, he blinked twice. Nick felt his body relax -- Sarah was there he could rest; as they slept his breathing rhythm from the monitors changed.
“Where did Sarah go?” Ted wondered as they both went to each stand on the side of the bed. “She probably went to stretch her legs & back as well as get something to eat since she’s been here constantly except for when Jack’s taken her places.” Aubree replied as she placed her hand against Nick’s face.
