This is a story takes place after Gus & Harley's seperation.
I wanted this to be my version of when GusH got back together.
** The Characters of Gus & Harley do not belong to me, they are property of the soap opera "Guiding Light"
I am in no way affliated with Proctor & Gamble, CBS, or Guiding Light. Also I am in no way affliated with the actors who portray Gus & Harley.
This story was begun in August 2007.

Chapter 1:
This story popped in my head as I watched the ITL on 8-22-07… It’s my version of what might / could happen. This will pick up as Gus leaves the house. Italicized writing is actual script ~~~ Let me know what you think. Enjoy! GG
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Gus sat the jar of mud on the counter & stood there desperately committing Harley’s face to his memory while she stood on the opposite side from him fighting the urge not to look at him.
“Alright. So I guess I should go.”
Harley picked up the pickles & mayonnaise in order to put them away “Yeah. It's just temporary, you know. It's just temporary. It's best for now. It's not forever.”
"Right.” Gus said quietly.
Coming back from the refrigerator, “I have your dry cleaning slip so I'll just bring your shirts to you?” she asked.
“No, that's all right. I'll get them. And the boys are going to be in that little show at camp. So should I not go?” He wondered
Standing in front of him, Harley finally looked at him, “No, of course you should go. If you don't go, they'll be devastated.”
“All right. I'll be there.” Gus said.
“All right, I'll just give you a call if I need you.” Harley said all the while fighting tears.
“You can call me if you don’t. Even if you don’t. All right.” Gus stated, he knew his wife—he knew this was killing her.
“I mean it babe call me even if you don’t need me.” He could see the sheen of tears in her beautiful eyes.
She quickly nodded as he watched her. Gus desperately wanted to take her in his arms but he knew he couldn’t so without touching her he leaned in, “I’m so sorry I hurt you.” He whispered staying where he was figuring she’d pull away. When she didn’t move he quietly said his next words, “I love you.”
Standing he turned & went to the door picking up his trash bag luggage. Turning to face her once again he gave her a small smile then turning went out closing the door behind him.
Taking his hand from the doorknob he began to hyperventilate, quickly going to the bench he sat down. “Harley… Harley…” Gus continued to sit there he just couldn’t go yet. He wasn’t sure how long he’d been there when he heard a noise from inside the house. Standing he went to the door & looked through the window.
Harley had broken a plate, seeing the piece that Daisy held he saw it was Harley’s favorite. He almost went back in until he saw his girl’s tears as she fell apart. Sensing a presence Daisy turned to face the door even as her mom continued crying on her shoulder. Seeing Gus standing there & seeing his face she nodded to him then turned back to her mom. As he stood there watching the tears-- her tears, he laid his hand on the door & let his own tears fall.
Spaulding Mansion…
Gus stopped when he got to the door as he looked at who stood there, “I wanted to let you know that Harley & I decided to take a break for a while so we could regroup in order to work through our problems but I wanted to come spend some time with you.” He said holding his hand out. When he did Rafe shook it. “Okay.”
“Alright I’m going to go put my stuff in a room, take something for my ulcer & then I’ll be back.” Gus said & without another word left Rafe standing there.
Once in his room Gus dropped the trash bags. Digging for the bottle of pepto bismol he pulled it out & took a dose. He then lay on the bed with a hand over his stomach, it was killing him. As he lay there all he could think about was what Harley looked like when Daisy was holding her.
“I can’t let you go.” He said quietly as he fell asleep.
The next morning he sipped his coffee he stood in the hall debating if he really wanted to go in & face Alan, Natalia & Rafe.”
“Good Morning,” Natalia said coming up behind him wearing only an old Cubs T-shirt. “Rafe said you brought your stuff over last night.” Gus nodded, “Harley & me decided to take a temporary breather.”
“So she kicked you out?” Natalia asked bewildered.
“No, she didn’t kick me out… it was a mutual decision.”
“I can’t believe she did that to you Nick. I’m here for you. I’ll wait for you.”
Gus sat on the edge of the small hall table, “I am going to try & repair my marriage Nat, you don’t understand; I know Harley & how she reacts when she’s hurt… but the thing is I know I hurt her & knowing her reaction it’s not like I hurt her with just any woman… I hurt her with you.” He replied as he stood & walked past her into the den to get breakfast.
“Well, Good morning son.” Alan said when Gus walked in. “Alan. Hey Rafe.” He said as he went to the sideboard for food.
“This is nice to see.” Alan replied when Natalia walked in, “Gus & his family together.”
Gus turned to face his father, “Stop.” “Why son, I’m right you have Natalia here who is perfect with you & you have your son.”
“Harley is mine.” Gus stated. Alan dismissed his remark with a hand, “Her? The woman who stole 3 sons from me… no she’s trash & the sooner you realize that than you & Natalia can be together.”
“That’s it!” Gus ground out as he slammed the plate down. Turning he stormed out the door & ran up the stairs.
“Gus where?” Alan asked as he stood at the bottom of the stairs watching Gus pick up his bags. “Forget it Al.”
Gus came purposefully down the stairs, “I don’t know why I always do this…”
“Because you’re a Spaulding son.” Alan said with a knowing smile.
“NO,” Gus all but screamed. “I’m outta here!” Gus said as he quickly ran down the front steps to his car, throwing the bags in the seat he jumped in gunned the motor & peeled out of the drive way.
After taking 3 deep breaths to steady himself Gus slowed down, “Where now Gus?” He asked himself.
Thinking a minute Gus turned the car around & headed to his destination.
Chapter 2:
Reader(s) may want to go back & find Chapter 1 of this story to refresh yourselves on how this began. This is based on the current Storyline involving GusH but w/ a different spin. ~~ GG
He pulled into the parking lot; stopped then staring for a minute got out & before locking the door grabbed his bags.
“I never thought I’d be here again after 6 years.” He muttered as he walked through the door.
“Good afternoon sir, how can I help you?” the woman asked.
“Could you tell me if you still rent the rooms here; because I know you did several years ago.” He asked.
“Yes sir we still do & we changed things a bit; rent must be due every Friday by 5 p.m. “That sounds better than every other day by 5 p.m.” Gus said to her. “The rented room will have housekeeping unless you state otherwise.”
The woman smiled, “would you like a room.” She asked quietly she could see this man was hurting.
“Yes I would & here is the money for the 1st two weeks.” Gus replied putting the money on the counter. Turning the woman handed him a key, “you’ll be in room # 5” she said. Hearing the room number stopped him. He thought about asking if another room was available but realized he didn’t want too. “Thanks” he said & headed to his room.
“Hasn’t changed.” He thought as he looked through the open door then going in closed it after him. As he turned he was assaulted with all the memories of them he saw in this room. “Oh god!” he’s legs buckled as he slid to sit on the floor in front of the door.
“Harley… Harley…” he whispered over & over again as he slowly rocked.
He scrubbed his hands over his eyes then looked up & his eyes landed on the microwave. In doing so he remembered when the microwavable lasagna that had been their dinner had exploded because he’d left the foil cover on. He smiled sadly at the memory then sat in silence remembering. The quiet was broken in his memory when another memory of Jude crying from the other room took its place.
“I’m coming buddy.” He said as he stood then headed there. Reaching the edge of the bed he stopped remembering Jude was no longer there & his mom was no longer on the bed.
He avoided looking at the bed because he knew what he’d see there. Gus knew he could avoid it no longer so he turned to face it & saw Him & Harley there when there first time being together had been right here in this room. He saw them together with the ice cream & saw himself leaning in to kiss her.
Crawling on the bed he let that memory surround him completely. After about 10 minutes he sat up & thought about what problem had landed him here & hurting & Harley crying on the kitchen floor with Daisy beside her. Both were hurting an unspeakable hurt that only the other would understand.
Seeing only her face through the door now he grabbed for the phone & dialed a number then waited for the person to pick up.
“Hello.” She answered when she picked up.
“Daisy, its Gus.” He waited figuring she’d hang up on him.
“What happened between you & mom” she asked quietly.
“We decided to separate for now cutie.”
“Oh Gus.” She responded sadly.
“Listen Daisy is there any way you could meet me for a few minutes.” He asked.
“Yeah where?”
“Main Street.”
“Okay give me 15 minutes.” She said then he hung up.
Placing his phone in his pocket he headed to the nearby bench to wait for his stepdaughter.
Chapter 3:
Okay please let me state this… in this story it will include Rafe/Daisy separately at times & when the time is right I will add things about Daisy’s abortion & the fall out from it. However, it will have my own spin to it so I will write around the subject & it will be different than what we saw on screen. So, enjoy! & watch to see Gus & Harley fall in love again. ~~ GG ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
She stopped when she saw him & just looked at him, he looked as bad as mom did or worse & her heart went out to him. “Gus?” she called to get his attention as she walled toward him.
“Daisy, hey sweetie.” He said as she hugged him tightly.
Rubbing his hands over his face he leaned over to place his elbows on his knees as she sat beside him. “Gus, you don’t look so good.”
“I haven’t been sleeping so well Daisy.” He replied leaning back, “I don’t sleep well without your mom. But my sleeping habits aren’t why I asked you to meet me.” He said.
"Mom?"
He nodded, "I saw through the window." She nodded then, "I know I saw you… Mom fell apart when the plate broke."
"It wasn’t the plate sweetie." Gus said on a sigh. "Daisy, I wanted to give you this." He said reaching into his pants pocket & pulling out a small piece of paper. Handing it to her she stared at it & waited for him to continue. "That is the number to where I’m staying so, if you can’t reach me on my cell or work try there. I want you to call me if you, the boys or your mom needs anything. Okay?" "You’re not staying at the Spaulding Mansion?" Daisy asked
"No I’m not, & just because I’m not doesn’t mean you can still see Rafe." He stated.
"I take it you don’t want mom to know about this?" She replied holding up the paper. "No." Daisy leaned back & began to program the number into her cell phone.
"Mom really misses you Gus." Daisy said not looking at him as she continued with her phone. “I really miss her sweetie.” He tried to fight the tears but just couldn’t. She looked up as she saw his eyes fill.
“Gus I need to get going, I promised mom that I wouldn’t be to long.”
He nodded, “Kiss the boys for me.” He asked. “I will. Are you going back now?” she wondered. Shaking his head, “I think I’ll just sit here for a while.” “Okay.” She hugged Gus tightly. Sitting down heavily Gus watched as Daisy walked away. Turning back she called to him when he looked up she continued, “I’m glad you are my step-dad.” “I love you too Daisy.” He tried to smile as she left him; he knew that was her way of letting him know she loved him despite the rocky start they had. The tears were too much now… he couldn’t fight them anymore as he sat up & gave into the sharp pain he knew to be his heart breaking as the tears came silently.
Watching silently from a few feet away someone bought a Snickers Bar & then headed to the man. Standing there without saying anything he saw Gus’s tears as he stared into space. Getting closer, he passed him the candy bar & waited. Gus looked up surprised to see Rafe standing there holding out a candy bar to him. Sliding over Gus made room for him & he sat down. Neither said anything they just sat side by side. Rafe knew he probably wouldn’t have come had Daisy not sent him a text saying that he needed to see something.
When he had arrived he’d seen Gus sitting with Daisy & the look on his face. It was the look that had thrown Rafe back to what had gone on earlier this morning at the mansion. As he sat now beside Gus as he tried to finally make since of this morning. He’d never seen Gus react so fast & as final as when he ran upstairs grabbed his stuff & left the house & peeled out of the driveway.
“You love Harley, I see that now.” he stated.
“Very much Rafe.” Gus said without looking at him then realized what his son had said & looked over.
“I get that that you love but Harley has your heart now instead of mama.” He stated having seen his love for Harley in his eyes as he’d left.
Gus moved to where he could see Rafe better, “Let me say something to you here.” The teen nodded, “I love Harley now & always, & I’m going to do everything I can do to get her back; however, Rafe that doesn’t mean I don’t love you, I do very much! Now as far as your mom, I did love Nat very much at another point in my life or we wouldn’t have you. But to see her now, I love her as a friend nothing more. I will never be able to love her again the way she wants me too.” He said to his son.
“You’re staying somewhere else?”
Gus nodded, “I am but if you need to reach me at anytime you can always call my cell & we can figure something out about seeing each other but after this morning I’m not going back to that house.”
“Because of Alan and Mom?” Rafe wondered.
“More so because of Alan than your mom but she does play a part in that.”
“I’ll do what I can to help Gus, I can see how much you love her & miss her.”
“Thanks, but your mom will need you. Look I’m going to try & go to the station & see if I can do some work.” Gus said standing up.
When they both were standing Rafe shook hands with him & watched him walk away.
“Oh Rafe?” Gus said turning around, “Tell Daisy she didn’t have to.”
His son smiled, “Yeah she did… we want to help. Talk to you later.”
Gus turned & headed to the car.
Chapter 4:
Gus took a deep breath before he opened the door into the station. He knew Harley would be inside. He knew her schedule better than he did his own sometimes. Heading in he went straight to his desk. Harley stopped still when she saw him.
“Gus.” Frank called as soon as he saw him, “Can you come into my office?”
He nodded but never said anything as he grabbed a file & headed into Frank’s office. Closing the door he saw Mallet sitting on the edge of the desk. “Hey Gus.”
“Mallet.” He said looking at him.
“Why don’t you sit down?” Frank said motioning to a chair.
“No, thanks, I’ll stand.” Gus replied as he leaned up against the closed door.
“Alright, I’ll get to it…” Frank rubbed a hand over his face he hated this. “I’ve done some rework of your schedule & Harley’s. I know that it’s hard for you & sis so I have changed it where you’ll be partners with Mallet; Marina will partner with sis. This way all current files can still be worked on but it’ll be easier for you & Harley.”
“It won’t be easier period but it’ll work.” Gus responded.
“I know Gus… this isn’t any easier for sis.” Frank remarked. “I know.” He looked at Mallet, “Let me grab a box to pack up my main stuff & we’ll get to work.”
“Sure.” Mallet answered as they watched Gus leave & head for the storage room.
Coming back from the storage room Harley saw him head toward their desk. She scooted her chair out of the way as he knelt in from of the desk drawers.
“Did Frank fire you?” she asked startled
He looked up, “Oh it hurts not to be able to touch you.” He thought to himself. “No, I didn’t get fired; Frank partnered me with Mallet in order to make it easier for you… hell us… I don’t know which.” He answered frustrated as he opened the bottom drawer & began looking through what was there & placed things in the box that he’d want or need. He looked through all the drawers & then stood. Reaching over he picked up the triple frame; that sat on his desk & looked at the pictures. He smiled when he looked at them, one frame had the kids, the middle frame was of him & Harley & the third was of just Harley. Placing the frame on top of everything he balanced the box & looked over to the woman that still held his heart.
“I still love you Coop.” He said quietly & walked over to the desk that he’d now share with Mallet.
“You alright?” Mallet asked looking up. “Yeah just peachy…” Gus answered roughly as he arranged his side of the desk. Mallet looked around to see Harley & seeing her face he slowly shook his head for her. Harley bit her lip & fought tears. They were working on paperwork when they heard Harley answer her desk phone.
“Hey Daisy, what’s going on?”
“I’m hanging in there… I’m doing okay. I’ll bring tacos when I get off. Yeah I love you too baby. See you in a little bit.” She replied & hung up; getting back to work. An hour later he saw when Harley clocked out & left.
“Breathe Gus.” His partner stated looking at him. “I can’t it hurts to much right now. “Go home. I can handle the rest of this.” He replied holding up papers.
“Are you sure?” “Yeah, go.” Gus stood & grabbed a few files & then wearily left the station.
An hour later, after Gus had ordered Chinese; eaten & was now going over some files he stopped when he heard knocking on his door.
“Go Away!”
“Can’t do that.” Recognizing the voice Gus went & let him in then turning walked to the bed & sat.
“What are you doing here?” He asked Mallet. “How did you find me?”
“First, I thought you could use one of these.” He said passing him the cold beer. And second something told me you wouldn’t be staying at Alan’s so I just drove until I spotted your car. Now let me ask you- why here?”
Gus smiled sadly, “Memories I guess.”
Mallet looked around a little surprised. “Here?”
Gus nodded, “Yeah, I want her back so much it hurts.” “She is hurting just as much man.” Mallet said as he sank to the floor.
“I know she is… I know my girl better than she realizes. But I don’t think she’ll let my stupid mistake go to where I can reach her again.” Gus stated.
“I take it by mistake you mean Natalia?”
Gus nodded, “Yeah.” He replied wearily.
“Do you love Harley, Gus?”
“Absolutely, she’s my present & I hope my future… I love her so much.” He replied rubbing a hand slowly over his heart.
“I saw her watching you the other day; I could see she was a million miles away though so when I asked if she was okay her only answer was “He’s not the same guy I fell in love with 6 years ago.
His breath caught in his throat when he heard that statement, it hit Gus like a ton of bricks. “Do you know what she meant?” Mallet wondered. Seeing his partner’s eyes change Mallet knew Gus did
“Gus?” Mallet called. When he looked up, Mallet continued, “If you really love her as you say you do -- he stopped for a minute then with a sad smile continued, “Do what I didn’t do man… fight to get her back. Help her remember why she fell in love you; make her fall in love with you again.”
Standing Mallet straightened his pants before he said, “I’ll see you at the station tomorrow.
Gus only nodded as his partner let himself out.
“You saw it didn’t you Coop. You knew the minute I saw her again… I would change didn’t you?” He asked himself then answered his own question.
“I let my past with Nat get the better of me.” He stated just as the phone rang.
“Hello,”
“It’s me.” Gus recognized Daisy’s voice. “Hi sweetie. Is anything wrong?” He asked.
“No, mom took the boys out for ice cream but I didn’t want to go. I just thought while they were gone would be a good time to check on you.” She replied.
He smiled, “I’m okay Daisy--.”
“You promised not to lie to me.” She said interrupting him.
He ran his hand over his face as he listened.
“Daisy what do you want me to say, I don’t want to upset you sweetie.”
“Are you okay?”
“It kills me to be without your mom?” he answered
“She cried tonight Gus, we were eating tacos & she just started crying. All she was doing was eating her 3 crispy tacos.”
“My order.” He mumbled.
“Daisy, listen hang in there I’ll see what I can do.” He said quietly.
“Can I keep checking on you?” she asked.
“Of Course…. Let me know if anybody needs anything.” He replied then hung up.
Gus moved the files he’d been working on before Mallet showed up to the table then grabbed the Chinese carton to throw it away, “Wouldn’t want it to fossilize.” He mumbled pitching it in the trash. He changed clothes & put on his sweat pants & climbed in bed.
“We’ll fall in love again babe.” He said as he lay facing what would have been Harley’s side of the bed as he drifted off to sleep dreaming of his girl.
Chapter 5:
Author’s note: (A/N: ) This chapter begins the slow build of Gus & Harley getting back together. A week has past since the last chapter. Gus has taken that time to think out a plan so he can put it into motion. I hope you enjoy! – GG
Harley walked in to the station after lunch. After hanging her jacket up she went to her desk & without really looking at it placed her purse in the bottom drawer then went to get coffee.
Gus stood at the evidence cage door watching her. Finally getting her coffee she headed back. Seeing what was on the desk she stopped & picked up the two roses that were waiting for her, 1 red & 1 yellow. Lifting her head she locked eyes with Gus. He saw as she held them close and their special meaning for those colors was remembered. Not saying anything to her he went back into the evidence cage to pull the evidence for the case he was working on.
“Why did you do this Gus?” she asked in her head. She knew why.
“Gus, Mallet, can you come in here?” Frank asked opening his door.
“Sure.” They replied in unison.
“Okay guys sit down; on the phone I have Captain Stewart of the Chicago PD. I’m going to let him explain why he called me.”
Frank punched the hold button, “Chief Stewart, Detectives’ Aitoro & Mallet are here… go ahead sir.”
“Hello gentlemen. As I was telling your chief my office has been tracking the movements of 2 rival gangs & their activities that are here in the area. All has been quiet until recently when a homicide passed through here that we think was the work of the Cobras.
Gus’s eyebrow arched at hearing the name as he continued to listen.
“Who is the other gang?” Frank asked. “16W” Chief Stewart replied.
“Who are --?” Mallet started to say but stopped when Gus spoke up.
“16th street Warriors.”
“How did you know Detective?” Stewart asked surprised.
“It’s Detective Aitoro sir… I know the area you refer to sir because I grew up in the Chicago area & my father had knowledge of that sector.”
“Detective Aitoro would you be willing to work with us on this homicide?”
Gus watched Frank, “If my Chief signs off on it I’ll be happy to help anyway I can Chief Stewart.”
“Chief Stewart I’ll be sending 2 of my best detectives to help you out.”
“Thank you… I’ll fax you the file that we have for this homicide.” He replied.
“I’ll be in Chicago in the morning sir… which precinct are you?” Gus asked as he began to jot down notes.
“18th. I’ll see you in the morning.” Chief Stewart replied then hung up.
“I’ll leave for Chicago in the morning Frank. Mallet can you handle things here until I get back?”
“Whoa pal.” Mallet stopped him by grabbing his arm. “You aren’t going without me. We’re partners; somebody’s going to watch your back.”
“Mallet’s right, I’m not sending you into help with gang activity without backup.” Frank said as he placed 2 copies of the homicide Chief Stewart sent over in folders & handed them to Mallet & Gus.
“You guys, knock off the rest of the day in order to get ready to leave… I want daily reports for you in order to have a heads up in case things start moving in this area.” Mallet nodded. Opening the door they went back to their desk.
Both Mallet & Gus got to work doing research about the activity in the Chicago area they printed out everything they could find & placed it in their briefcases. “I’m going to check the files for old data about them?” Mallet replied.
“Good, we may need all the information we can get besides what Chief Stewart can gives us.” Gus stated. “I’ll be right back.”
Harley saw him heading toward her; he leaned against her desk facing her.
Gus just stayed still a minute as he let her perfume wrap around him. Shaking himself back to the present he found Harley watching him quietly.
“Can I talk to you for a minute?”
She nodded, his nearness was affecting her & she didn’t want it too.
“Can I come by & see the kids tonight for a little bit please?”
Seeing the look on his face, she smiled “Yeah if you want… stop by about six.”
“Thanks.” He replied. Going back to his desk he looked over, “I’m headed out Mallet –.” “Okay Gus I’ll update you on anything that pops tomorrow. I’ll be going in a minute to.”
Gus grabbed his jacket & briefcase & left the station.
Back at his room, he changed into comfortable clothes & then pulled out his suitcase & garment bag & began to pack.
Throwing his jeans & t-shirts in the suitcase, he knew he’d need those if he had to come in contact with any of the gang members. He also packed his dress pants & a few sweaters along with his other stuff. Pulling his dress shoes out he packed one pair & left the other out for tomorrow. Going to the closet he began to put his suits & dress shirts in the garment bag; leaving the suit, shirt & tie out that he would wear in the morning.
In the bathroom he packed his toiletries & then threw the bag on the suitcase as he looked at the clock. Seeing the time he grabbed his jacket, keys, & phone & left for Harley’s.
He sat in the driveway for a few minutes just looking at the house; he missed it so much. Finally getting out he went to the door & rang the bell.
“I got it!” Daisy said when she heard the doorbell. Seeing who it was she smiled and hugged him & closed the door after him. “Where is everyone?” He asked. “We were just about to sit down to dinner, come on.” She responded & he followed her.
“Look who I found!” Daisy said as they walked in. “Gus!” the boys shouted as they clamored out of their seats to get to him. Kneeling he hugged them both then looked up to see Harley smiling.
“Since you are about to eat, I won’t stay long.” He said. “There’s enough if you want to join us.” “Are you sure?” She nodded so he sat down & had dinner with his family.
Later once everyone sat in the den, Harley in the chair as far as she could get from Gus who was on the couch with the boys. Gus just let the feeling sink in—he knew this case he was helping with could get dangerous & he wanted the memories of tonight.
“Hey Daisy, Zach, Jude, I want to talk to you for a minute okay.” He knew what he was about to tell them his girl didn’t even know. They all were looking at him.
“I came by to see you tonight because tomorrow I have to go to Chicago to help work on a case with the Chicago P.D. & I’m not sure how long I’ll be there.” “Can we still contact you?” Zach asked, “Not always by phone but if not by phone & if your mom says its okay you can send me email okay?” Gus responded & chucked him under the chin.
“I’ll stay for a little longer, you guys go play.” He said smiling.
When the boys jumped down, Daisy took Zach’s place by him, “Does contacting you—include me too?” She asked shooting him a knowing look. He hugged her tight and whispered in her ear, “Yes, you still keep me updated okay.”
An hour later, Gus had to go so he hugged the boys & Daisy & then she took the upstairs leaving Harley alone with Gus. She walked with him to the door.
They stood staring at each other for a few minutes before Harley asked, “Gus? You know something what is it?”
He leaned against the door frame, “Take Care beautiful, please.”
Without a thought, Gus reached out & pulled her to him as his mouth took hers & he deepened the kiss. She stood still a minute then wrapped her arms around his neck as he kissed her.
Breaking the kiss he stepped back, “Ask Frank. I love you Beautiful.” Then closed the door and left her standing there.
Leaning weakly against the door, she touched her fingers to her lips, “His kisses haven’t changed.”
Chapter 6:
Harley finally gave up trying to sleep & flipped the covers back, then stood. She began to prowl around the bedroom as the look on Gus’s face before he’d kissed her came to her mind. She couldn’t get that look nor his last “I love you” out of her mind.
“Why do I have chills run down my spine every time I see that look?” She wondered out loud.
Not caring that it was 3:30 in the morning, she grabbed her cell in order to call him. She had flipped her phone open then thinking better of it snapped it closed as she began to prowl again holding the phone in her hand. Harley didn’t know how long she’d paced as she talked herself out of calling him.
“I can’t call him.” She said, “We’re separated. She paced again.
After a few minutes she flipped her phone open once more, and then stopped.
“But you love him.” She heard so clearly in her head. “No!” she replied fiercely. Once again she saw his face. Finally giving in she hit the button for his cell & waited.
“Hello?” came the sleepy question.
“Gus.”
Hearing her voice shot him awake, “Harley, what’s wrong?” he asked.
“Nothing’s wrong… oh never mind!” she stated feeling stupid. As she started to hang up, she heard, “wait.”
“Why’d you call baby?”
“I keep seeing that look on your face before you left tonight.” She said & he could tell she was worried
He rolled on to his side, “Harley don’t worry about me. You don’t need to be since we’re not together anymore.” He wasn’t going to tell her everything right now; he knew she’d talk to Frank. He did want to reassure her because he knew that she’d realized he had been apprehensive before he’d left so he said, “To ease your mind I was just preoccupied with the Chicago case I’m helping with that’s all I promise. I’ll stop by when I get back & see the kids. I need sleep Harley, try to sleep okay.”
“Are you sure?”
“Yes, I’m sure; I’ll see you when I get back. G’nite.” He replied then hung up.
“He’ll be okay, he promised she said to herself as she climbed back in bed & drifted off. At the same time Gus drifted off knowing he’d talked to his girl.
Later that Morning…
Harley went to her desk & sat down. “I need coffee.” She said to herself. Heading in that direction she passed by the guys desks & detouring knocked on her brother’s office door.
“Come in” she heard after she knocked. Opening the door Frank looked up when she started in. Closing the door behind her she leaned against it not saying a word.
“Harley?” Frank asked puzzled.
“What is it that Gus wouldn’t tell me about this case in Chicago?”
“Sis, they are there to help with a case since Gus is familiar with the area.” Frank stated hoping she’d stop there; he knew if she knew why she would just worry.
Harley knew her brother, “Damnit Frank you’re lying to me; tell me what type of case sent them to Chicago; tell me all of it… tell me all of it now!” she said loudly.
He knew she wouldn’t stop until she knew the truth, “Sit down sis.”
When she sat he continued, “Chief Stewart of the 18th precinct called to let me know & to give me a heads up in case any activity began in this area. I wanted Gus & Mallet to know because a homicide happened & when Gus let it be known he knew the Chicago area, Chief Stewart asked if he’d be willing to help. I agreed & I sent the guys.
“What type of homicide?”
“It was a gang related homicide.”
“No!!!”
“Tell me all of it Frank!” He nodded and sat beside her to tell her the rest.
In Chicago… 18th precinct…
Everyone in the room stopped & looked up when two men entered, both were wearing black suits, white dress shirts, one was wearing a red tie, the other a blue & they both were still wearing their sun glasses.
“I’m looking for Chief Stewart’s office?” Gus said.
“I’ll show you… follow me.” An officer said as he took them to the Chief’s office.
“Chief, the detectives from Springfield are here.” His officer replied opening the door.
“Thanks Daniels.” Stewart said as he stood to shake hands with Gus & Mallet when they entered.
“I’m Det. Gus Aitoro & this is my partner, Det. A.C. Mallet.” Gus said as they shook hands.
“Thanks for coming gentlemen, close the door & we’ll get to work.” Chief Stewart responded as Gus went & closed the door.
“A week ago, two of my Detectives were called down to ‘The Alley’ on a homicide.” Gus whistled low.
“Det. Aitoro, you said your father was familiar with that sector. How so?” Chief Stewart asked.
“My dad was a cop many years ago & in the unit he was with they had knowledge of The Alley.” Gus replied. “Who was your dad?”
“Joe Augustino--.” Stewart interrupted, “with the Organized Crime Division?” “Yes sir.”
“I knew of him. Gus he was a great cop.” Chief Stewart stated. “Thank you sir. What happened?”
Understanding that he didn’t want to linger the chief pulled the file of still shots & as Gus & Mallet looked over them the Chief told of what his detectives found.
“The victim we believe was murdered by the Cobras.” “What makes you think that sir?” Mallet asked.
“The Cobras have a certain way they kill their enemies & they like to show off so they leave a mark on the victim to show they killed the victims.”
“Is this their calling card Chief?” Gus asked when both men looked at the picture & he pointed out the CG on the body.
“Who was the victim?”
“Det. Mallet the victim was a member of “16W” the Cobra’s rival gang. This is why I asked for help especially since you know the Chicago area Det. Aitoro. Now that one from this gang has been killed the 16W will retaliate & if not watched a gang war between these two could erupt quickly.”
“Will help anyway we can Chief.” Gus replied. He nodded, “I would like you both to take a look at all the files that I have gathered for these gangs & look over them & we’ll start fresh tomorrow.”
Mallet & Gus each took the groups of files & with a nod they left the station. As they were walking to their car Gus heard his phone. Holding the files with one arm he answered.
“Hello?”
“Are you out of your mind?” Harley shouted when she heard his voice. “Hello to you to.” He answered just glad to hear her voice.
“You can’t take on the Cobras or the 16W gangs Gus, not by yourself.”
“Harley, I won’t be; that’s why Mallet’s here to watch my back & the entire 18th precinct will cover both our backs.” “I’ll wait in the car Gus.” Mallet replied as he took the files from Gus & headed to their car as Gus leaned against the building.
He could tell their were tears, “I’ll be safe, I promise I would never leave Zach or Jude.” Gus said softly.
“You promised me.” She stated, “I want emails or phone calls from you while you’re gone.”
“I’ll do what I can Harley. I need to go, Mallet’s waiting for me.”
He heard her tears now, “Baby, I love you.” He waited.
“Come back.” She said through her tears. He smiled sadly, “Come back, in general or come back to you? Love you.” Gus snapped his phone shut & waited for his own breathing to level out.
In Springfield…
Harley sat at her desk crying, “Come back.” She said. “Don’t leave me.” She whispered & gave into all her tears. Standing at his office door Frank watched his sister realize she couldn’t live without Gus.
Chapter 7:
This Chapter will be about Harley more so than Gus. I don’t really know if this will be a long or short chapter. Sorry I didn’t get it sooner, I had a bit of writer’s block trying to figure out which direction to take Harley in this chapter.
Author Note: The door that we usually see people going in & out of at GusH’s house I have made the back door NOT the main door. For this chapter I have people coming in there front door (which we do not see on screen)
Harley’s memories are italicized
** IMHO we should have seen something like this as Harley grieved over the loss of her marriage NOT what we saw the day they didn’t renew there vows.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Standing at his office door Frank sees his sister’s heartbreak over Gus. Going to her he squats down in front of her. “Sis.” He says as he lays a hand on her knee. When she looks at him he continues, “I want you to go home, you need time.”
“But work.” She mumbled.
“No, your mind’s where it should be.” He said softly.
“Gus.” She said as tears welled in her eyes.
He nodded in agreement, “Gus.” “I’ll be right back Harley.” Frank added as he stood.
As he turned away he motioned to two officers, “Patterson, I need you to drive my sister home okay? Stevens will follow in a squad car in order for you both to get back. Here are her keys.” He said taking them off her desk and handing them to Patterson.
Frank walked his sister out & watched as the cars drove away. Wanting someone to be with her until he could check on her again; Frank hit a number on speed dial & waited.
“Hey Coop it’s me, are you doing anything important right now? Would you be willing to go over & stay with Harley, she found out what type of case Gus & Mallet are on & she fell apart… she misses Gus so much. Thanks; give her awhile then go over, tell Ashlee I said Hi & I’m sorry.” He replied than went back to his office.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
After Harley let herself in the front door, she stood in front of the closed door & looked around as if she were lost, leaning against the door she closed her eyes.
“Hi Beautiful” Gus replied as he came down the stairs to stand in front of her then kissed her lovingly. “You look tired.”
“I am.” She replied, “I thought you were in Chicago on a case.”
Gus smiled, “I am Harley.” She quickly opened her eyes & realized she was totally alone. She wiped the tears away.
“I need coffee.” She said as she walked toward the kitchen. As she was waiting on it to drip she was looking out the window at the back yard when she felt arms come around her, she knew his touch anywhere.
“Hi Baby.”
In an answer Gus propped his head on her shoulder & slowly kiss down her neck. “I miss my girl.” He said for her ears only. She smiled. Harley loved it when he called her ‘his girl’ it made her feel special. When she turned to kiss him there was no one behind her.
“Gus?” she called. Not hearing an answer she realized feeling his touch & hearing him had all been a memory. She knew there were some nights he had surprised her while she was cooking & he’d come up behind her just to hold her & he’d kiss her neck.
“This is his house too.” She said sadly. Not tasting the rest of her coffee she dumped it out. Stepping out of her shoes as she went she headed upstairs to lie down.
Reaching her room she went in & headed for her closet to change clothes. Harley stopped in front of the bed when images assaulted her. She let her memory take her back. She saw them on the bed cuddled close, happy & laughing as the desire between them slowed.
“I love you so much Harley.” Gus had said as he held her tighter. “What would I do without you?” Facing him she smiled, “I don’t know but knowing us we’d be so miserable without each other. Good thing we’ll never find out, because I’m never letting you go.”
“Never huh?” Gus had asked. She had nodded her response. “Good!” He added as he began to lightly kiss her. She giggled, “Your kisses are tickling me.” Lifting his head Gus grinned that sexy grin, “Tickling you?” He slowly began his tickle torture until he was making her laugh. That imaged blended with another.
This time the image wasn’t of them laughing.
She was sitting on there bed watching him pack his clothes. “Take suitcases Gus” She saw herself say. “No, I’ll leave the same way I came in.” he had replied placing his things in the black garbage bags. “You made it plainly clear I don’t belong in your life or the boys’ lives anymore. He added as a tear slipped down his cheek as he picked up their wedding picture & placed it in the bag.
“Always the boys’ lives Gus.” She had answered. “Just not yours huh.” He said straightening to look at her. “I told you I will always love you. The day we decided not to renew our vows.”
He stopped & ran his hands thru his hair as he stopped trying to fight his tears. “You mean the day that you decided to stop fighting for us.” Harley remembered how she had just stared at him. “You decided to let go, not me… you… even when I told you that you Harley are my love not Natalia. She saw herself about to say something but he held up a hand.
“No, I’m not going to fight with you anymore.” He had said as he walked to the door & she followed. Stopping at the door Gus turned & pulled her quickly to him as he took her face between his hands & devoured her mouth in a kiss that had all his love poured into it. “I still love you Harley, my love for you will never die.” He replied softly before he took his bags downstairs to leave them by the door so he could get the stuff he wanted & to see the boys one more time before he left.
As the memory began to fade, her knees buckled and she slid to the floor in front of the bed.
“What have I done?” she said softly as she stared into space as tears ran silently down.
Downstairs, Coop let himself in & as he placed his key in his pocket & closed the door he called out her name. When she didn’t answer he looked around puzzled. Seeing her shoes he bent to pick them up, “Maybe she’s upstairs.” He said & started up the stairs toward her room. Reaching her room he heard weeping & slowly opened the door. What he saw tore at his heart.
“Oh god! What have I done?? She said through her heavy thick tears as she silently rocked back & forth,” Gus… what have I done to us.” She said again as she continued to cry.
Knowing that his sister needed this time he slowly turned & headed back downstairs to wait.
Chapter 8:
Coop walks into the family room & sits down after pulling his cell phone from his back pocket. Dialing Gus’s number he waits.
“Aitoro.” Gus said when he answered.
“Gus, its Coop, do you have a minute?”
“Yeah, Mallet & I are just doing some research what’s up?”
“It’s Harley.”
“What about her?” Gus asked anxiously as Mallet looked up.
“Gus, she flipped out. She’s upstairs crying her eyes out & murmuring “What have I done to us.”
Gus closed his eyes when he heard Coop’s words. “Does she know you’re there?”
“No, not yet.” Coop responded. “Okay, I’ll call back, knowing your sister she’ll let the machine pick up… Coop don’t answer.” “Okay.” They hung up.
When Gus hung up, he let out a sigh, “You okay partner.” Mallet asked. He shook his head, “Harley.” Was all he said as he picked up the phone once again & dialed the number he knew by heart.
Coop sat outside his sister’s door as he heard the phone ring. After 3 rings the machine picked up. “Hi you have reached Harley, Zach & Jude… we are not home right now so please leave your name, number & a brief message & we’ll get back to you. Have a great day!”
“Harley it’s me. I missed you… I don’t know if your home…” Gus was silent for a minute then continued, “You’re there aren’t you baby? Please pick up when I call back in a minute. Bye.” Gus asked before he hung up. Once he hung up, he hit redial & waited.
“Hello.” She said quietly when she picked up. “Hi Coop.” he answered. “Why are you crying honey?”
“I’m not, you woke me.” She started to say then stopped. “I know the difference between when you wake up & your tears… I hear the tears.” He replied. “Why?”
“Can I be honest?” she asked. “Of course, even though we’re not together I’m still your friend I hope you know that?”
“Yeah. I miss my ---” She said quietly as her sentence was left unfinished.
“You miss your… what tell me?”
“I miss my best friend.” She answered as tears once again slipped from her eyes.
Gus closed his own eyes for a second placing the palm of his hand over his heart as if to stop it’s hurting. Opening them again he continued
“I miss mine too. Talk to me, I’m right here.”
“It just hit me today how much this house is still yours.” She said.
“The house was ours baby… I was never going to make you leave that house.” Gus said as Mallet saw him rub his wedding ring. “Sweetheart, unfortunately I have to go apparently Mallet found something… but I promise we will talk when I get home. Love y--.”
“Gus,” Harley interrupted. “Yeah?” “Please be careful.” She added. “I will baby; tell the boys I love them… I’ll be home soon. Bye.” Gus said then hung up the phone.
“What did you find?” he asked Mallet who was sitting there tapping a file against his palm.
“Apparently there’s a drug ring” Mallet replied. He saw Gus as he began to pace. “What else?”
Mallet looked down, “There is one drug dealer working that area & it looks as if he has snitches on both gangs so when the Cobras saw some guys on the Warriors had a stash of drugs on him---.”
“The Cobras thought that the Warriors were infringing on there territory.” Gus finished. “Do we have any leads on the head of the drug operation?”
“Yeah” Mallet replied. “They have a name?” Gus asked surprised. Mallet nodded, “Apparently it was overheard through the ranks & the members know its not a name to be messed with even though he’s a fair boss. Let’s go tell Stewart & see what he says.”
Gus started to speak but stopped because he was getting this feeling in his gut. “Wait? Have I heard of the name before?” His partner nodded slowly. “Yes.” Gus slammed his open hand down on the desk, “Not—.”
“Yes.” Mallet said watching his partner. “Damnit!!! Damnit!!” Gus said fiercely as he punched the wall with his fist. “Let’s go.” He said slowly as they both stood & headed to the Chief’s office.
Thirty minutes later, when the guys came back to their office there was a game plan in the works now the chief was filling in the gaps for the Task force that would be working with Mallet & Gus. Sitting down at his computer, Gus began to compose an email:
To: Frank Cooper From: Gus Aitoro Subject: Game Plan
Frank, it’s apparent that there is a drug ring in the works here. The homicide of the gang member happened because the rival gang thinks the other gang is infringing on there drug deals. The head of the operation has been identified all we have to do is catch him before anymore lives are taken either by his order or in retaliation.
A plan is being formed now to infiltrate however M & I will have to do leg work; one of us will update you on events.
Gus
Hitting the send button Gus wiped his face with his hands. Then he began to compose another email:
To: Harley Cooper From: Gus Aitoro Subject: Wanted to say Hi
Hey Sweetie, I know I shouldn’t call you that anymore but I need to at the moment. We have a lead we’re working on at the moment. I wanted to just let you that I was thinking of you & missed you & the boys very much.
Today I was reminded of the story of the “white panama hat” that I had years ago? You know the one I mean…. You never know when you’ll be reminded of things that should stay in the past but don’t. LOL
Anyway tell the boys I love them & that I’ll be home when I can. Take care of yourself Harley & I’ll talk to you soon.
AML, (All My Love)
G.
He began running searches knowing Harley would catch what he meant. Knowing she would know what he was feeling & going through made him feel steadier.
Back in Springfield…
After Harley had woken up once she’d spoken to Gus she washed her face & headed down stairs. Reaching the bottom she saw her little brother sitting on the couch writing in a notebook.
“Hey Coop.” she said. He turned & smiled. “Hey Sis. Frank wanted me to stay with you; is that okay?”
She nodded and sat down beside him, “How are you?”
“I miss Gus.” She remarked closing her eyes as the last conversation between them played back in her head. “Where’s Ashlee?”
“At work… she’ll be over in a little bit.”
Before he could continue, Harley heard her computer beeping which was the signal that she had new email.
Going to the desk, she sat down & pulled her email up. After going through a couple she saw the message from Gus.
“I got one from Gus Coop.” she said
Standing Coop walked over & stood behind her as she began to read:
To: Harley Cooper From: Gus Aitoro Subject: Wanted to say Hi
Hey Sweetie, I know I shouldn’t call you that anymore but I need to at the moment. We have a lead we’re working on at the moment. I wanted to just let you that I was thinking of you & missed you & the boys very much.
“I miss you too Gus. It was good to hear your voice.” She murmured out loud.”
“They have a lead.” She said looking at Coop. “That’s good… means he may be home quicker. Her brother said kneeling beside her as she kept reading.
Today I was reminded of the story of the “white panama hat” that I had years ago? You know the one I mean…. You never know when you’ll be reminded of things that should stay in the past but don’t. LOL
“White panama hat.” She murmured. Harley went still. “You okay?” Coop wondered. She nodded be stayed silent. She re-read that portion again as his words sunk in. When they did she quickly read the last part.
Anyway tell the boys I love them & that I’ll be home when I can. Take care of yourself Harley & I’ll talk to you soon.
AML, (All My Love)
G.
Grabbing the phone, she dialed Gus’s cell phone. “Hello?” Gus said answering. “Are you sure?”
“Pretty sure, you know how I’d always get that feeling in the pit of my stomach?”
“Yeah. She answered. “I got it now.”
She leaned back against her chair. “Please be careful.” I will Harley, don’t worry. I gotta get back to it. I’ll send emails.”
“Okay.”
“Love you.” He whispered then hung up.
“Not again. She whispered then turned to hug Coop.
Chapter 9:
“Santos?” Chief Stewart said surprised “Yes sir.” Gus replied. “When I did some research; I found that after Danny left Springfield with his wife Michelle & their two children they came to Chicago where Danny started a few legal businesses but shortly after, the illegal activities began. One was the drug ring. He figured that if he used the gangs he would never be caught so he has runners with both gangs in order to distribute the drugs.
“He distributes them through the ranks of the gangs who in turn reach the smaller people.” Mallet said picking up where Gus left off.
“You know how Santos works Gus?”
He nodded, “I do sir, when I was with the FBI I was tracking the movements of the Santos mob family.”
“Am I too understand that his father had yours killed?” the chief asked.
“Yes sir.” Gus answered quietly. “Can you do this job Aitoro?” The chief asked seriously, “If you can’t tell me now & I’ll take you off.”
Gus knew he had to do this not only for himself but also for Harley to show her that when he ended that vendetta against the Santos family years ago he meant it. He wanted everything in his past that she knew of to stay there so that they could rebuild there life together. “Yes, sir I can do the job sir.”
“Good, now let me fill you in on what the Task force has planned. They both nodded as they listened to the chief. An hour later both he & Mallet were brought up to date & were told of there places in the team plan. Once in there office Gus sat down & Mallet leaned against his partner’s desk. “Are you sure you can do this?” he asked concerned.
“Yes, I can… Harley gave me the strength to let all of that go. Now all Danny is a mob boss & criminal that needs to be put away.” Gus replied tiredly. “Now, I need to call Harley & see if she’ll be willing to run interference with her brother… because once he knows its Danny he’ll want to pull me from the case.” “You better get to it.” Mallet said sardonically, “I’m going to talk to the guys on our end of the task force here.” Gus nodded. Once the door shut behind him Gus called Harley at the station.
“Cooper.” She answered
“Hey.” He replied. Hearing his voice Harley smiled. “Hey you.”
“Coop, I know you don’t want to have to help me, but I’m asking… I’ve got to tell Frank who the lead is & once he knows he’ll want to pull me from this case knowing my history, would you be willing to be there when I tell him & run interference against pulling me off, since I’m not there in person?” he asked hesitantly.
“I don’t mind helping you Gus, of course I’ll help with Frank anyway I can. I’m headed to Frank’s office now.” She stated as she made her way across the bull-pen to Frank’s office. Knocking, she waited until he allowed entry then walked in; closing the door behind her. “I’m putting you on speaker.” She said. “Are you there?”
“Yeah.” Frank heard Gus answer then looked at Harley puzzled.
“He wanted me here as he filled you in on the lead they have in Chicago.”
“Go ahead Gus.” Frank said. “Frank we have discovered that the homicide that happened here was because a drug ring in the works here. The homicide of the gang member happened because the rival gang thinks the other gang is infringing on there drug deals. The head of the operation has been identified---”
“You told me all this in the email.” Frank interrupted. “Have you learned more?” “Yes. The name of the head guy was learned through the ranks, & the two officers that are undercover within the gangs told us.”
“So who is it?”
Gus let out a shaky breath. “I’m here.” Harley said.
“It’s Danny.” He said slowly. “Danny?” Frank questioned waiting for Gus to continue; but as the name slowly began to register Frank stared at his sister. “Santos… Danny Santos?”
“That’d be the one.” Harley answered. Frank slapped the desk making the phone jump & making Gus move the phone from his ear. “Damn… you’re off the case Gus, Mallet can take over.”
“Now wait a minute Frank.” Harley said stepping in. “There’s no waiting sis he’s out!” “Don’t take me out Frank, I can do this.” Gus appealed to his boss. “You have a history with him!” Frank ranted.
Harley pushed her brother to sit then held up her hand to keep him from continuing, “Hear me out, Frank.” She asked, “Yes, Gus does have the history with the Santos, but think about this, because of that he knows how Danny works, how Danny thinks… considering he tracked him during his time in the FBI. He can give the Chicago Task force scenarios on Danny’s movements that those officers don’t catch or don’t understand. Gus knows how Danny works!” Harley said again emphatically. “Gus can help the Chicago PD stay ahead of Danny & maybe be able to catch him this time.”
Frank sat in silence trying to comprehend if what Harley said had merit or if Gus would follow through instead of letting the vendetta come back to haunt him.
“Harley?” Gus called when all he heard was silence. “He’s thinking Gus.” Harley answered. “Hold on.”
Harley saw Frank’s face & knew where her brother’s thoughts were going. “Don’t pull him from this case, he needs to do this.” She said. Gus’ heart stopped when he heard her. “I believe in him Frank.” Harley added. Hearing her next words made him close his eyes; when he opened them twin tears spilled & ran unheeded down his face.
“You have a point sis, he can stay on the case… but Gus I’m giving you two chances here; if you screw up your off this case. Got it?”
“Got it?” Gus said. “Thanks.” “You or Mallet will still send me emails keeping me up to date with the progress of the investigation.”
“Absolutely.” He answered then Harley took him off speaker. “Okay, you’re off speaker.” She remarked going back to her desk.
“Thanks, for your help Harley.” Gus responded. “I’ll let you get back to work.” He told her goodbye then hung up. He wanted so badly to ask if she meant what she had said but he couldn’t push the fragile friendship that still remained in place between them.
Harley slowly hung up the phone. She knew he had heard what she’d told Frank but he never asked if she’d meant it. “Did he know I meant it without asking?” she wondered.
“Wanting to make sure he knew it she picked up the phone again & dialed.
“Aitoro.” He answered.
“I meant everything I said.” She said quietly. He let out the breath he didn’t realize he’d been holding. “I know… or I thought I knew without you saying but…”
“I did mean it. You do need to do this.” He sighed. “But most importantly I need you to know that what I said is true- I do believe in you.” Quiet filled the line as he heard her hang up.
He twirled his wedding band for a minute after he hung up. Pulling his wallet out he flipped to the picture of the two of them that he always kept with him even though Harley never knew it. He memorized her face as he stared at the picture. The memory of where & when the photo was taken made him smile. She still loved him but she didn’t want to admit it. He knew his girl’s heart.
Sitting at her desk at the station Harley looked at the picture that she had on her desk. “If the plan is going into motion soon please be careful Gus.” She murmured out loud then got back to work.
Chapter 10:
The next morning when Mallet & Gus arrived at the office Chief Stewart called them in. Closing the door they saw the Task Force member that has been under cover with Salerno’s operation as well as the two men that have been undercover in the gangs. “Mallet today you start undercover. He nodded.
“Danny had a drug shipment come in last night. Apparently it is to be delivered to Mike here who is with the Task Force & undercover within Salerno’s operation. Mike will be bringing you to meet Danny at the same time he delivers the shipment to him.” The Chief paused a minute before continuing, “Your past with Griggs will be spoken of & used as your cover. Are you okay with that Mallet?” He rubbed a hand over his face, “If that’s the credibility I need to reach Danny – I’ll do what I have to.”
“How will Salerno be okay with passing me to Danny when neither has ever seen me?” Mallet asked.
“Oh but you have been seen… Salerno knew of you when you worked with Griggs. He saw your work. He knows you would be good in Danny’s organization.”
“Can you give me a minute.” He replied & left the room. Gus had been watching his partner then followed him out.
Gus didn’t say anything for a minute, “You okay?” Mallet opened his eyes, “These guys find out everything don’t they?”
“Yeah, Salerno knows where to dig if he wants background on someone.” Gus replied.
“My past with Griggs is not something I’m proud of & when he hurt Dinah & then kidnapped Marina I thought I was done with him.”
“I know. My past with Danny is not something I’m proud of either. Harley helped me come to terms with it. But I never thought I’d be thrown back into a situation like this with Danny.”
“We both have a lot to work through don’t we?” “Yes, we do. Let’s go back.” Gus remarked as they went back into the chief’s office.
The chief continued once they were back, “You will meet Danny this afternoon & you’ll have a note from Salerno stating that he knows of your work & that he thinks you’d fit well in Danny’s operation. He will realize since Salerno sent you that you must be really good at your job… You may have to field questions that Danny may ask of your previous work.” Mallet nodded. “Once he okay’s you as part of his operation he will place you in a gang.”
“Then what?”
“Whichever gang you are placed in that that Task Force member either Rocky or Jake will befriend you in order to show you the ropes.”
“What about me?” Gus asked.
“You will stay here for the time being. If Danny spots you he could easily split. Mallet you will be Gus’ eyes & ears. The sunglasses that you’ll wear are wired for both sound & video so Gus can follow the movements for you & Danny. That alright?” The chief asked looking at Gus.
“Yes sir, but how can I follow Danny?” He asked looking puzzled. “Danny will be impressed with the dossiers on both Mallet & the taskforce agent & they both will be placed in the elite few of guards that are always with Santos.” The chief explained. “Now let’s get you set Mallet, as I stated earlier Danny will be checking that shipment.
Danny’s Office – Somewhere in Chicago…
“Did that shipment come in?” Danny asked.
The guard by his desk nodded; “Yes sir it did, it’s being held in the warehouse down at ‘the Alley.’
“Good. He looked haphazardly through the correspondence on his desk.
“Give me an hour then we’ll go check the shipment.” With a nod the guard left him. Turning the chair Danny turned on the computer. Checking his email he saw he had a few from Michelle; he smiled as he answered them. Seeing another that caught his attention he opened it.
To: D. Santos From: V. Salerno Subject: Item Found
Santos-
The special “hammer” you requested as been located. - Salerno
Pushing away from his desk & going to the door, “Let’s go gentlemen.” He remarked & they followed him out.
Mallet stood with his contact Mike in front of the warehouse. “When will Danny be here?” Mallet asked casually as he pulled the collar of his black leather jacket up.
“I’m told he’ll be here in twenty minutes… but something tells me he’s already here on site.” Mike answered.
He was in deed already on site as he sat in his black-tinted window limo watching the two guys at the warehouse. “There a Mike around here?” a guy asked walking toward them.
“I’m Mike, what’s it to ya?” “Nothing man, I was just delivering this shipment & I was told you’d get it where it needs to go.” He replied passing Mike an invoice. “Yeah I’ll do that.” He replied then they waited for Danny. Fifteen minutes later Danny stepped out of the limo & headed over.
“Mike? You have something for me from your boss?”
“That’s me; yes sir I do, it’s right in there.” He said motioning in the warehouse.
After he stepped from the warehouse he came back to them, “And you—who are you?” he demanded looking at Mallet.
“From Salerno.” He returned passing Danny the note. Taking he opened it & began to read:
Danny-
This is Mallet; I hear he works for Griggs; so I’m pretty sure he’ll fit nicely within your operation. I did see his handiwork – he’s good! –Salerno.
“Griggs huh?” “Yes sir.” Mallet answered. “Were you any good?” “My targets never saw it coming—I never had any complaints from my previous boss.”
“Show me?” Danny requested. “Hit that crate over there.” He motioned to one several feet away. Mallet drew his gun & silencer; once the silencer was on he turned to say something to the men then without warning raised his gun & fired hitting the crate dead center.
“Very good, you’ll fit nicely within the operation. Come with me, I’ll place you within the 16W gang you can work with them.
Chapter 11: takes place several weeks later. Mallet has been under cover & established in the operation. He has given Gus plenty of information to give to Chief Stewart.
Mallet along with others knows that there is a new shipment coming in this afternoon. Chief Stewart has asked Gus to go to the drop off point to see what he thinks with Fresh eyes.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“The boss says we’re to head to the drop point.” Jake said as he looked at Mallet & Mike who they knew to be Task Force yet be a contact between Salerno & Danny.
“Does your boss want me to come as well?” Mike asked. “No, he wants you to tell your boss it’s taken care of.”
“Yeah.” Mike answered slipping on his sunglasses. “Mallet, Jake see ya.” He walked from the building then left a quick text to Mallet.
As the group headed out they saw Mallet pull his phone out, “You guys go on,” he remarked. “It’s my girl I’ll catch up to you.” He said hearing the chuckles from the other guys & they left to head to the drop point.
“What is it?” Jake said.
“It’s Mike, he’ll call Salerno & let him know then come in just in case if any of us need back up.” Jake nodded. “Time to fill Gus in.”
“Gus can hear me?”
“Yeah, I can Mallet… where do I need to go?”
“The drop point is the abandoned movie theater on 10th street; you know where that is?”
Gus froze; “Yeah I know where it is. I’m just about there.” He said as he came around the back & went in & found a place to hide & after arranging the stacked crates so he could still see everything he crouched down to wait.
“I’m in place.” He commented through Mallet’s ear piece.
Jake & Mallet walked up to the rest of the group & stood waiting for Danny.
“I thought the boss was going to be here?” Jake commented. “He will be he’s running late.” One of the group stated. “Gentlemen, sorry for the delay.” Danny said as he arrived. “The shipment is being placed here as I speak.” Danny stopped an answered his phone; “we can go in.” he said as he turned & opened the door.
Upon entry the men saw the open crates of a white powdery substance. Going over to a crate Mallet held up a bag where Gus could see it while he pretended to inspect it.
“Nice merchandise boss.” Mallet murmured. Danny grinned, “Of course only the best.”
After forty-five minutes of inspecting the crates Danny began to go through & have his men move the crates he selected from the movie theater.
Once the hand-selected crates were removed Mallet walked back into the movie theater where Danny had been supervising the distribution of the crates, “We’re all done sir.” Mallet stated as he nonchalantly pulled his sunglasses from his jacket pocket & put them on.
“Good Mallet. When you were with Griggs, did you sometimes get a cut of the monetary profits?” He nodded, “Yeah if he liked the outcome & style of the job I did. It was my bonus for a job well done as Griggs called it.”
“Well, depending on what I see there maybe bonuses in your future.” Without warning Danny turned & fired a shot into the boxes that stood stacked in the corner. “Thought I saw an animal crawl back there.” Danny commented as he & Mallet walked from the theater. .
Gus felt the bullet graze his left arm; feeling the impact against his arm he let a hiss of breath waiting for the pain to slow even as he knew the bullet lodged in the wall behind him. He didn’t have enough time to even try to clamp his right hand over his wound he heard footsteps come back in & stand in front of his hiding place.
Before he could move all the boxes were tumbling down on top of him and he hit the floor as one of Danny’s men pushed them over on him.
At the same time outside Danny & his men were stopped by the police & all booked & taken to the station for questioning. As the were Mallet slipped away & back inside the movie theater where he saw Gus knocked out cold & his arm bleeding. After summoning a paramedic Mallet turned pulling out his cell & speed dialing Harley; he knew she’d want to know about Gus.
“Hello.”
“Harley, its Mallet… I think you need to come to Chicago, it’s Gus he’s been hurt.”
Harley froze as she fought tears. “Where is he?” After he told her & hung up she cleared it with Frank then called her dad to watch the boys then left headed to Chicago… to Gus.
Mallet met her in the waiting room, “He’s okay Harley.”
“Where is he?” she said anxiously. “He was just taken down to x-ray.”
She looked at him confused. “Gus was hidden in the drop area when we entered so he was able to see & hear everything that went on. As Danny & I were leaving he shot into the crates Gus was behind, apparently the bullet grazed him. Once I was able to slip back inside I found Gus out cold with several of the crates on top of him. The paramedic said that when he tried to lift his left arm Gus winced but never came too. They are x-raying his left side to see if there are any other injuries.”
“Det. Mallet?” The doctor said walking up to them. Mallet & Harley turned. “Yes.” He stopped & questioned Harley’s presence there. “This is Detective Aitoro’s wife.” Mallet replied. The doctor nodded.
“Mr. Aitoro was knocked out cold & is still out at the moment. He was grazed by a bullet in the upper part of his left arm. Due to our information from the paramedic we x-rayed him & discovered that when the crates fell on him it dislocated his left shoulder pretty severely. So while he was still out we put the shoulder back in place. However that means that he will be wearing a sling for at least 6 weeks until his shoulder heals completely. We have cleaned the bullet wound & bandaged it. Once he’s awake we’ll give him something for the pain.” The doctor finished.
“Can I see him?” Harley asked. “Of course.” The doctor turned & led them to his room.
Mallet opened the door for her then closed it behind her. When she saw him she closed her eyes for a minute then opened them. She studied him as she sat down by his bed. His upper arm was bandaged then placed in a sling. She saw cuts & bruises all around his face from the accident. Taking his hand she held it as she looked at him.
“Gus, sweetie its Harley… I’m here.” She said as she placed a soft kiss on the back of his hand. “You’re in the hospital & banged up but you’ll be fine. Just rest, I’m not going anywhere.” She stated as she caressed his face & talked to him so he could hear her voice.
After an hour passed, Harley felt him squeeze her hand. Stopping she watched as he slowly opened his eyes. “Take it slow Gus.”
“Harley?” he whispered with a rough voice as he turned his head to look at her.
“You’re here?”
She smiled. “I came as soon as Mallet called me.”
“What happened?” He tried to move his arm but stopped when pain radiated up his arm. “I’ll let Mallet tell you.” Harley answered.
“Before you do can I kiss you?” Gus asked hesitantly. She leaned in & his lips locked on hers. Pulling back he let her go get Mallet.
A few minutes later Mallet walked in with the doctor. After examining him the doctor told him of his injuries. “I’ll go get something for the pain. Seeing the look Gus shot Harley made her squeeze his hand. “Doc, I once had a problem with prescription pain killers.” Looking at Gus he nodded, “I understand I’ll see what I can find that’s just as effective.” He responded then left them.
“Danny?” Gus said quietly to Mallet. His partner nodded and began to fill him in. Once he was done Gus told them what happened to him.
“Do you think Danny knew it was you?” Harley asked. Gus shook his head, “No, but he knew someone was following him. “I gotta get out of here to question Danny.”
“Whoa partner.” Mallet said pushing Gus gently to the bed as he tried to pull himself up. “Danny’s being held for 72 hours. You can question him tomorrow. Today you need to take it easy.” The doctor came back & gave Gus his pills & left again.
“I’ll be with you tomorrow to question him. Just let Harley take care of you right now.”
Gus nodded while Mallet pulled her aside then with a wave left them.
He reached for her hand when she came back. “I have to tell someone this or I’ll lose it babe.” He replied as she helped him roll on his uninjured side.
“You okay?”
“Physically I will be emotionally I’m not sure.”
“What happened Gus?” She knew that tortured look he sometimes got… he had it now.
“I was meeting the Task Force at the drop area, I was waiting on someone to tell me where. When they did they told me 10th street the old abandoned movie theater.” She squeezed his hand tighter as she saw a tear run his face, “That theater on 10th street was where my dad died all those years ago Coop.”
“Oh Gus.” She said as she let the bed rail down where she could reach him. “All I could think as I watched the crates come down was I was in the same place where Dad died.”
“I’m sorry sweetheart so sorry. I know that was horrible for you.” She said stroking his face. “You’ll put your past to rest this time I promise you will. You are so much stronger now than you were then.
“Don’t leave me Harley?” Gus asked. “I won’t. But you do need to rest so the meds can take affect. Close your eyes & sleep.” He did but he never let go of her hand.

Chapter 12:
This Chapter picks up where the last one ended. ~ GG
Harley made herself more comfortable in the recliner beside Gus’s bed and continued to gently run her thumb over the back of his hand until she knew he was asleep. She’d only been sleeping about an hour when he cried out “Dad!” and woke her.
She saw the panic in his eyes as he fought to find her in the dark, “I’m here.” She said gently reaching over to him. “Gus, he’s always with you; you know that.” He nodded. “How did you know?”
“You called for Joe when you woke up.” She leaned in and ran her fingers over his hair as he became lost in thought.
“I always hoped I could become the kind of cop he was…” Gus let the sentence drop. “You are.” She replied leaning on the bed rail looking at the man she knew she still loved.
“No.” he answered.
They were both quiet for several minutes because she didn’t want to intrude on his thoughts of Joe Augustino.
Gus dropped his head tiredly back to the pillow while he looked away and out the window. After more minutes of silence she heard him sniff as he wiped a tear from his cheek. “Why the tears what memory are you thinking about?” she wondered.
He turned to look at her, “I’m thinking about you and me… about us.” He replied as a tear fell. “I don’t want to talk about this right now.” She commented walking away from the bed giving him her back. “I can’t” he heard her say. “Maybe after we get home.” She stated hesitantly.
“Okay, just don’t go anywhere tonight.” He pleaded. She turned; seeing how tired he was, “You need to rest and sleep if you want to try and get out of here tomorrow.” She stated. “I am tired.”
“Just close your eyes & sleep Gus.” He nodded sleepily without looking at her. She went back to his bed and gently touched his face as he let sleep take him.
Once he was asleep, she left the room to see if Mallet was still there and saw him coming toward her, “Is he okay, I heard a noise?” He asked.
“He dreamed of his dad mainly because --.” She stopped looking down.
“What?” Mallet asked concerned.
“The movie theater where you guys were… that was where his dad was shot and killed by Miguel Santos.”
“Oh man.” He ran a hand over his face. “Go on.”
She shook her head, “If Gus chooses to tell you the rest he can but he needs to not me. The only reason I told you about the theater is because you heard him when he woke from his dream. Now I’m going to the cafeteria to get some juice please keep an ear open for him.” She asked then slowly made her way to the cafeteria. Twenty minutes later she came back and slipped into Gus’s room.
The Next Morning…
Gus slowly let his eyes adjust to the angle of the sun then opened them. Turning his head he saw her asleep in the recliner. Taking her hand in his he held it for a few minutes before she woke.
“Gus?”
“Yeah?” he said “How are you?” she asked standing.
“I hurt like hell.” She nodded, “The doctor said you might.”
“I have to get out of here baby, I need to question Danny.”
“Let me get the doctor.” She added then stepped outside to find his doctor.
She & the doctor finally came back ten minutes later. “Good morning Mr. Aitoro, how are you?”
“I hurt.” Gus remarked. “Let me do a quick exam then I can tell you if you can go home.” Harley stayed out of the way.
“Things look good to go. Because of the information you shared with me, I’ve put you on Naproxen which is an anti inflammatory plus a Tylenol. That’s the safest I can give you to control the pain.”
Gus nodded then the doctor continued, “You will need to wear the sling until your shoulder completely heals which means you will need to stay with someone who can help you since you will need help.
“I can manage on my own doc.”
Harley looked at him intently. “Doctor, Gus will be staying with me.” She replied. When he heard her Gus’s head shot up.
“The doctor nodded, “Here you go.” He said passing her the pill bottle. I’ll make some notations then fax this to your hospital to Dr. Bauer.” He reached in a drawer & pulled out a sling laying it on the bed he added, “After you dress I’ll show you how to put this on his arm.” He left them.
“Harley I’ll help him dress if you’d like.” Mallet offered. “Thanks.” She said then quickly left the room.
Thirty minutes later, Mallet stuck his head out the door. Both the doctor & Harley came in.
The doctor picked up the sling then proceeded to show them how to put the sling on his shoulder.
Once he was finished he pulled a small cup from his pocket, “these are the morning pain pills.” He said handing them to Gus for him to take. “By the time you get home it should almost be time for another round.
After signing the release forms Harley helped him to the car. “I’ll meet you at the station, I need to get there & talk to Chief Stewart.” Mallet slipped on sunglasses then climbed in the patrol car & left.
“Are you sure you want to question him now?” Harley asked.
“Yes.” “Okay.” She drove him to the station & once they were there Gus reached over with his good arm, “Come in with me.”
“If you want me too.” She answered walking with him inside.
Once inside Harley found a place to sit while Gus went to see the chief. Five minutes later both he & Mallet came out. Mallet sent her a look that had Harley going over to Gus where he stood & waited while Mallet walked away.
Placing a hand on the back of his uninjured shoulder she stood quietly. “Mallet can question him Gus. She saw him shake his head no. “I have to do this babe. I just never thought I’d face Danny again you know.”
“I know. She said rubbing his shoulder. “I have to do this for myself, for dad so I can put---.” He turned to look at her. “To put your past to rest? Is that what you were going to finish your sentence?”
“Yeah. I have to put it to rest. For me for you.” That caught her by surprise. “Don’t say anything.” He added. “Here we go.” He remarked getting the signal that Danny was on his way up as he took her with him into the adjoining interrogation room where Chief Stewart was there listening.
An officer brought Danny up & placed him in interrogation. A few minutes later Mallet walked in. “Hello Danny.”
“Mallet.” He answered. “You knew I was a cop?”
Danny nodded. “So am I getting questioned?”
“Yeah when my partner gets here in a second.” Mallet replied. “So, to you running a drug ring isn’t a problem?” he asked as he saw Gus slip in behind Danny.
“Not really.”
“Say hello to my partner Santos.” Mallet responded as he stepped back & Gus walked in front of Danny.
“You.” Danny said caught off guard.
“Santos.” Gus returned. “If I’d known it was you, I’d have aimed higher.” He commented with a smirk.
“Alright Santos, you have a rap sheet a mile long… to add the new it would be Drug Running, Drug trafficking & Murder 2 of the gang member. All because of your need for power & money a young kid was killed.”
“You had two gangs dealing drugs to minors & yet you knew that. But when the news got to you from the Cobras you got mad & gave the order to kill.” Mallet said slamming the file down in front of Danny where he could see the still shot of the murdered kid. “You ordered the rival gang to do your dirty work.”
“I’ll walk Aitoro & you know it.” Danny stated looking at Gus. “Not this time, we have enough on you in video & audio of what was at the warehouse, your illegal actives for you club, & what happened today. We have it on tape clearly that there was cocaine in those crates.”
“It won’t stick.”
“Why Danny? Why won’t it stick?” Mallet asked.
“Because I’m undercover for the Federal Government.”
“That’s right Aitoro.” He said as Gus stared at him. “When I left Springfield some goons tried for Michelle, Robbie & Hope. When I couldn’t protect them. I decided to flip on Salerno since they were his guys. I agreed to go deep undercover in order to rat out Salerno.
There was a knock at the door & Chief Stewart stepped in, “He’s right Detectives. I just finished talking with Danny’s boss. He knew he was going to be caught today. He also knew that Mallet was a cop in his organization.”
“But Salerno sent me.” Mallet returned. “Yes he did but he doesn’t know you’re a cop… which is why he thought you’d be perfect for Danny’s organization.” Chief Stewart answered.
“Apparently it’s supposed to get back to Salerno that Danny got picked up today.
“The Feds have Danny in place where they need him in order to catch Salerno. So after you question him let him go. All evidence is marked & going to be picked up by his boss.”
After they questioned him they let him go. When Gus walked out of the room he went straight to Harley would stood waiting. “Let’s go home.” She said. He nodded tiredly.
Danny stood back watching; he wondered when it would be known.

Chapter 13:
Gus moves in with Harley ~~ GG
Gus tiredly walked from the police station while Harley followed. She saw when he began to walk faster toward the car. She knew having to let Danny go was killing him so she fell back further behind him in order to give him time to compose himself. Reaching the car she saw his head resting against the top; placing her hand on his back she waited. She knew he’d need her. Without a word Gus turned pulled her close & wrapped his arm tightly around her. “I know I’m not supposed to hold you --.” “Shhh.” She placed her index finger across his lips to cut off his next words. Harley held on to him as he buried his face in her neck.
From across the parking lot Mallet saw them so he slowed his steps until they drew apart. “Gus, I need to talk to you for just a second.” He called as Gus turned. Seeing his partner Gus walked over to meet him, “Yeah?”
“I’ll pack up your stuff from our hotel room here & bring it to you when I get back to Springfield.” Gus nodded, “Thanks, could you also go by my room in Springfield & pack that in my duffel bag before you bring the other to Harley’s?” He asked passing Mallet the room key. “Sure.” Mallet remarked taking the key. “No problem, I’ll let you know when I’m on my way to Harley’s.” he added then helped Gus into the car where Harley sat waiting.
Five minutes later Harley looked at Gus. “Why don’t you let the seat back a little & try to nap awhile, the interrogation had to have drained you.” She stated. “I think I will if you’re sure?” he replied. She gave him a small smile & nodded as he let the seat back then closed his eyes. Harley slightly caressed his cheek then let her hand drop. He opened his eyes to look at her, “I’ll win you back.” He thought before he drifted off.
Dialing a number Harley waited, “Mom!” Daisy answered anxiously answering the phone. “Hey sweetie, I need you to listen to me okay. I’m going to need you & Grandpa to head over to the house to get the guest room ready?”
“Why?” Daisy wondered.
“Its Gus sweetie, he was hurt yesterday & he’ll need help for a while so I told the doctor he was staying with us.” “Is he okay?” Daisy asked. “He’s fine it was nothing to serious but he can’t stay by himself right now. We’ll be home in an hour or two.” She replied. “Okay I’ll tell Grandpa & see you at home. Tell Gus I love him. Daisy asked then hung up.
When she turned Buzz was standing there. “What?” Daisy filled him in, “I’m glad Gus is okay but I’m really glad knowing the fact that Gus will have a chance to talk to my stubborn daughter. Come on lets get to the house.” Buzz left with Daisy.
An hour later Gus slowly sat up, “Where are we?”
“Coming into Springfield, how are you feeling?” she wondered.
“I’ll be okay but the pills are beginning to wear off.” He stated shifting in the seat. “We’ll be there in 30 minutes can you hang on until we get home?” He nodded.
Pulling in the driveway she helped him get out & then slipped her key in when they reached the door. “We’re home!” she called as they came in. Buzz & Daisy came from the kitchen. Seeing him Daisy ran over & gently hugged Gus.
“He needs to sit down.” Harley said. “I’ll get your pills.” She disappeared in the kitchen to get water as he sat on the couch.
“Are you okay?” Buzz asked looking him over. “What happened?”
“Here Gus.” Harley said passing him the glass & his pills when she came back. After taking them he looked back over at Buzz & Daisy. “I was undercover; the suspect shot into the crates I was using to hide behind, the bullet grazed my left arm.” He motioned to the bandage. “A few minutes later, one of the suspects’ guards came back & pushed the crates over on me knocking me out & severely dislocating my shoulder.” He told them leaning back.
Just then the boys came barreling through the front door but stopped suddenly when they saw Gus. Neither said a word in disbelief as they hugged him. Both he & Harley saw tears falling steadily down the boys’ cheeks when they realized he was there. “I’m here guys.” Gus whispered to each of them. “Boys go put your stuff upstairs, Gus isn’t going anywhere.” Harley said as they watched the boys go upstairs. She looked over, “They’ve missed you.”
Buzz touched her shoulder then told her what he’d laid out for dinner then left after giving Gus a careful hug. “Mom, I’ll keep Gus company if that’s okay.” Daisy asked watching them both. Gus nodded as Harley went to finish dinner. “You okay Daisy? You look pale?” He asked as she sat beside him on the couch. “I’m fine, just haven’t felt good the last couple of days. She answered slowly without looking at him. When Daisy didn’t look at him Gus knew something wasn’t right but he knew he’d have to deal with it later.
“Mom’s missed you so much.” Daisy remarked taking his hand. He looked toward the kitchen, “I’ve missed your mom too sweetie.” Looking at his step-daughter he smiled, “So tell me what I’ve missed?” He saw Daisy close her eyes for a minute. “Guys dinner’s ready.” Harley said as she came into the family room to help Gus if he needed it. Gus pushed himself to his feet. “I’ll get the boys mom.” Daisy murmured running upstairs.
“Something’s not right with Daisy is there?” Gus wanted to know as he looked at Harley. “She’ll be okay but she wants to be the one to tell you herself. He nodded as they headed to eat.
Later, Gus flipped his phone open when it rang. He spoke to whoever it was for a few minutes then hung up. “That was Mallet he’s almost here, he’s bring my clothes.” A couple of minutes later Daisy got up & opened the door for Mallet. “Hey everyone.” He said looking around. “Here are your clothes Gus, where would you like them?”
“In the guest room Mallet, second door to the left upstairs.” Harley answered. Nodding he headed up. Coming down a few minutes later Mallet crouched down by where Gus was sitting, “How are you?”
“I hurt but I’ll live.” Gus said chuckling a bit. “Really?” Mallet asked seriously. “I hurt, I’m tired but I’ll live.” Mallet looked down for a minute then back up, “I’m really sorry about Chicago Gus.”
He nodded, “Yeah me too, but I’m letting it go I have to. Here let me walk you out.” Gus replied carefully standing then following his partner to the door where their conversation was semi private.
“She’s worried Gus.” Mallet said glancing at Harley. “I know but while I’m here I’m going to see if I can make some in roads; if you know what I mean.” Mallet nodded. “She’s still in love with you.” “I don’t know- maybe. But I’m going to see if we can fall in love again.” “Good. By the way, Frank has told me to tell you not to report to work for a week & give your shoulder time to mend.” Mallet looked over at Harley & the kids, “I gotta get going everybody… Goodnight.” He said as he shook hands with Gus then left.
Harley saw him turn & look at her, “I’m really tired I’m going up to bed. “I’ll yell when I need help.” He said. She nodded then watched him say Goodnight to Daisy before going upstairs.
After forty-five minutes she headed to the guest room to check on Gus. “Damn it.” she heard him mumble before knocking on the door frame. “You okay? Need help?”
He looked up, “Oh I’m just peachy.” He said sarcastically watching her come in the room & wait by the door as he began to loosen the sling in order to take it off. Once it was off & he had his sleep top in his hand he looked up at her.
“Will you help me with my shirt?” he asked hesitantly.
She swallowed thickly knowing what seeing him without a shirt would do to her. Carefully she began to unbutton the shirt since he had to keep his injured arm still. Once the buttons were undone she slid the fabric off one shoulder & watched it fall. Reaching over & as gently as possible helped him slip his injured shoulder from the shirt. “I’m sorry.” She said when he flinched. “Its okay.” He heard the change in her voice. Seeing him shirtless sent what seem like hundreds of butterflies through Harley’s stomach as she fought the urge to touch him like she used too. She helped him into his pajama shirt then buttoned it. Then Harley placed the sling on his arm again.
While Gus was getting comfortable she went down to get his pills. Bringing them back with a glass of water he took them then lay down.
She knelt beside the bed, “If you need something call me. Or yell for Daisy if you can’t get me & she’ll wake me up.” He nodded. “I’m going to put your pills in the bathroom medicine cabinet. So you’ll know where they are when you need to take them.” He nodded again then took her hand.
“Why did you agree to help me babe?” he asked.
“Because you couldn’t stay by yourself & you would need help.” She answered simply then looked down at her hand in his. “Thanks.” When she looked at him he saw the real answer in her eyes. “Anytime Gus, I’ll see you in the morning.” She said squeezing his hand. Letting go he got comfortable as she headed to the door. Turning she saw him watching her. “Goodnight, call if you need something.” He nodded as she left the door open a bit so she could her him then walked over to check on the boys. Coming back she stood at the guest room door & watched him sleep for several minutes before leaning against the wall, “I love you.” She whispered then went back downstairs.

Chapter 14:
It had been a week and a half since Gus had moved in with Harley. In that time; both had fallen back into the old rhythm that Gus & Harley had when they’d been together.
“Damn it!” he said frustrated one evening when Harley had passed by his door.
“What is it?” she asked walking in his room. “Nothing.” He replied roughly. She knelt in front of him, “It’s something I can tell.” He sighed, “My shoulder is aching like crazy & I’m not sure what I can do to stop it because I can’t take anymore meds right now.” “Come with me.” Harley requested as they went downstairs. Motioning him to the couch he sat while she made a call then went to the kitchen.
Coming back he saw her carrying an ice pack. “What’s that for?” Gus asked wary.
“I called Rick, he said to try ice but it had to go directly on your skin so unbutton your shirt.” Harley stated as she watched him finish with the buttons.
“This will be really cold.” She added as she placed the pack directly on his shoulder under his shirt. “Just sit on the couch for a little while & see if the ice helps.” She remarked as they saw Daisy walk in eating an apple. Gus saw the tears that flooded Daisy’s eyes. “Harley.” He whispered. She nodded understanding his gesture as he glanced over.
“I’d like some company sweetie-.” He looked back to his step-daughter, “-would you stay with me?” She looked at Harley for a sign & her mom nodded so Daisy sat on the couch beside him as Harley left to go spend time with the boys. “Why the ice Gus?” Daisy wondered. “Oh my shoulder’s been aching so Rick suggested ice.” Gus replied as he watched her as she sat stiff next to him.
In the quiet of the moment, Daisy laid her head against his uninjured shoulder. Carefully he wrapped his arm around her. “Ever since I got here Daisy you’ve been really pale… what’s wrong?” While he waited for her answer all he kept seeing was that she’d looked like she’d been physically hurt. “I haven’t felt too good lately.” She said softly. “I can see that sweetie I can tell there’s more too it… what is it?”
Gus tipped her head back to look at her, “When I talked to you weeks ago before I went undercover you were fine, what was different between then & now?” he asked.
Seeing her tears, he held her closer, “You can tell me sweetheart, I’m here for you too.” “You won’t like me after you know?” Daisy choked out on a sob. Gus slowly ran his fingers in her hair. “Tell me?”
Daisy took a deep breath, she dreaded telling him, “The day after the last time we talked I found out I was pregnant.” She murmured as she heard him draw a shocked breath in. “Oh sweetie.” He tipped her head back again. “Rafe’s?” When she nodded Gus shut his eyes for a minute. Opening them, he hugged her close, “Does he know?” Daisy nodded, “Yeah, but not until after…” her sentenced dropped
She saw as he comprehended what she had said, “Tell me the rest.”
“I agonized for weeks what to do, I knew Rafe was so excited about going on that trip, I just couldn’t take that away from him. He’d want us to be together if he knew & give up the opportunities he was getting… I wasn’t going to let him do that. –.”
“Did your mom know?” Gus interrupted. “Nobody except Reva knew until after it was over.” She said slowly. “Go on.”
“After a couple of weeks, I checked in to the hospital, Reva was with me after the procedure. Rafe, Mom, & Natalia didn’t know until a week later.” She turned away from him. “One more question… how long ago was this done?” “Two and a half weeks ago.” “So that was a week before I came back.” She nodded. “You hate me don’t you?” she asked as tears fell.
He gently turned her to him, “Oh sweetheart, no I don’t hate you, I could never hate you. “I’m sorry I wasn’t here when all this was happening. How are you feeling?”
“I’ll be okay, I still hurt a little, but mostly its here.” She said placing her hand on her heart. Mainly because I miss Rafe & I know I hurt him. But this was the right thing for me. Gus.”
“What can I do?” Gus wondered. “You don’t want me to leave?” Daisy asked surprised. “No, I don’t want you to leave, you’re my daughter.” Gus replied kissing her temple. She began sobbing at his words so he held her close. “I love you Daisy.” He said softly. They had been sitting on the couch for 20 minutes when he looked down & noticed Daisy was almost asleep.
“Daisy?” Gus replied softly “let me help you upstairs so you can rest.” He stood carefully then kept his arm around her as she stood then helped her navigate the stairs. As they passed the boys room Harley saw them & met them in the hall as Gus walked with her to her room.
Helping her sit, he pulled off her shows. “Okay, in you go.” He said as he held the covers for her to climb in. Once she was comfortable he tucked her in.
“I’m too old to be tucked in.” Daisy whispered with a smile. Gus smiled then knelt, “Not tonight sweetie you get step-dad tucking you & taking care of you.”
Gus watched her for a minute then smiled, “You rest Dais & sleep, Call me if you need something.”
“Dad.” She murmured as she drifted off then left her room to go to Harley’s. Coming in he sat on the bed. “She told you?”
He nodded, “Why didn’t someone let me know?” “I was going to but Frank wouldn’t let me know anything in order for me to contact you. When Daisy told me; she also told me that she wanted to tell you. I agreed.”
“I have to call Rafe. Will you stay with me?” Harley nodded. Gus reached for the phone & called Natalia. “Now wait a minute Nat, he’s still my son! I do care what he goes through.” Gus answered.
“I will take care of my daughter. But that doesn’t mean I don’t care about Rafe.” He added.
“Gus? Call back in 5 minutes.” Rafe stated then hung up.”
“Mom!” Rafe stated loudly. “I need you to hear me okay. I know you loved Gus once, but he loves Harley, I see that so does everyone but you. I’ve seen him without her, he’s lost with her. He told me once that he loves you but not like you want him too. Harley is his family now. I understand that now. I know he loves me but he didn’t know about me for 17 years. I can’t ask him to step in to be my father now it’s not fair to Gus. He has another wife & family that he loves very much. You need to understand what I’m saying… I didn’t have Gus as a father figure, growing up. I won’t ask him. He & I are comfortable knowing the father/son connection is there but we’d rather be friends.
“It’s not fair for you to ask him to choose either. I want him to be happy & I’ll help him get back with Harley.” He responded as the phone rang once again & he grabbed it. “Hello.” “Hey Gus, could I talk to Harley for a second?” he asked leaving his mom standing there.
“Rafe wants to talk to you a minute.” Gus remarked seeing her puzzled look; passed her the phone. “Hello.”
“Hey Harley, I know you hate me but I want to talk to you for a second.”
“I don’t hate you Rafe.” She said wanting to ease his worry. “What’s up?”
“Gus?” the teenager said as he looked at the picture of Gus & Harley he kept hidden in his wallet. “He loves you Harley. You are his wife in his heart, you always have been. My mom is his past & I can be too if that’s what you need although I’d like to be friends with him. I’ll do everything I can to help make sure my mom understands. Please give him the chance to show you what he feels. He’s very happy when he’s with you I can see that. I don’t want him to have to choose between me & you, He doesn’t love my mom anymore not the way he loves you. I know it may take a bit but let him show you.”
“Can I talk to Gus for a minute?”
“Sure.” Harley answered shocked at his son’s words as she passed Gus the phone.
“Rafe.” Gus said taking the phone back. “I called because I just heard about what happened with Daisy… Are you okay?”
“Not really, I’m confused & hurt. I’m working through it though.” Gus closed his eyes. “I hope your shoulder gets better quickly. Take care of Daisy now Gus I’ll talk to you later.” Rafe said then hung up.
“I’ll check on Daisy.” He said turning to face Harley. “Then I’m headed to bed. She stood to go with him. After they checked on Daisy she waited until he called her name then went in to help him change which had become the nightly ritual now. Passing him his pain pills he took them then she waited
“Good night Gus.” She said
“Good night Cooper.” He said & she could tell he was smiling… she smiled at the memories she remembered.
