Soulmates... Chapter 1
Writer’s note: To make it easier on me to write this story his name is Nicholas but he’d rather go by the nickname of “Gus” so everyone calls him by his nickname except his little sister Eden who refuses to and she calls him “Nicky” Also, the name Nicholas will come back into the story later. Some of this will not match Harley or Frank’s GL history. Let me know what you think ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Seventeen year old Frank was waiting for a ten year old Harley when school let out. “Hey sis, how was school today?” Frank asked as they walked down 5th Street toward The Diner owned by their grandfather. “School was okay, but it was boring as usual.” Harley whined. Frank smiled at his sister as he looked at his watch, “Oh man, I have to get to the diner to help Pops out, Harley let’s go.” He said as they ran to the diner. Once the got there Frank got Harley a snack and then got to work. After an hour passed she looked at Frank when he came out of the kitchen.
“Frank I want to go home.” Harley said to him as he wiped down the counter.
He stopped, “Let me go ask Pops okay?” she nodded as he disappeared into the kitchen. Frank came out a few minutes later, “I want you to go home and start on your homework.” He said as he walked behind the counter. “Ahh Frank!” Harley whined. “Don’t look at me I’m just repeating what Pops told me to tell you.” Frank said. He walked her to the door and hugged her as he replied, “I’ll be home in a few hours okay so lock the door.” She nodded as she walked out the door toward home. Harley slowly walked down the street toward home. She didn’t want to do homework; she hated doing fractions. As she walked toward home she took her time. Behind her she heard “Hey brat I suggest you get off my street, this street belongs to me.” Karl said as he walked behind her calling her names.
Harley turned around, “You don’t own this street and quit calling me names.” “Nope, pip squeak, baby.” Karl answered.
She tried to walk a little faster but behind her she heard him laughing; she turned “You are a meanie, you know that?” “Oh I’m scared, I’m shaking.” Karl said coming up behind her.
“Don’t mess with me Karl; let me go home in peace for once?” Harley asked. “If you want to go home, you are going to have to say the password before you can get by me.” He stated as he blocked her path. “I don’t know the password.” Harley said as she tried to walk around him. Karl smiled as he stood there he wasn’t going to let Harley get by so fast. When Harley tried to step around him again he grabbed her book bag and jerked it off her shoulder and then took off running down the street.
“You big bully, give me my books back Karl.” She shouted as she ran after him. “Why should I little girl.” Karl said as he laughed and dropped her books on the ground. Karl didn’t see Harley as she kicked him in both shins.
While she was kicking him, she didn’t see the boy walking on the other side of the street. When the little boy saw Karl, the street’s main bully he knew he had to think of something fast, however, he smiled as he watched the girl hold her own and kick Karl in the shins.
When Gus got even with them he shouted, “Are you ready to go I got the stuff we needed.”
Harley looked up to see a ten year old boy with black hair, dark complexion, and deep brown eyes -- he was wearing faded jeans, that had holes beginning at the knees and a white shirt; standing across the street from her. He was holding his hand out to her. She smiled at him as he winked at her so she grabbed her bag from Karl and ran across the street to meet him.
“Sorry it took so long” Gus said loud enough for Karl to hear as they walked away from him.
Five minutes later, as they walked down the street Harley asked, "what are we doing?” “I’m showing you another way to get to your street without Karl bugging you.” Gus answered.
“What’s your name?” Harley asked.
“It’s Nicholas Augustino but everybody calls me Gus,” he replied.
“What’s yours?” he asked her as she walked beside him.
“My name’s Harley Davidson Cooper.” She said. He looked at her funny, “you mean like the motorcycle – Harley?” She nodded, “Cool, nice to meet ya Harley.” He said. “Nice to meet you to Gus.” Harley replied.
They both walked to the other end of the street she saw him on and crossed to her street from that side. At the house at the end of her street they walked around the back. They began walking through backyards when Gus said, “Which house is yours?” She pointed to one several houses down and he nodded before he continued, “If he gives you a problem take this route and you’ll stay off his street.
They laughed as she walked up her back steps; “Your brother will be glad you got home ok.” “He’s at work for a few hours so it’s just me,” Harley said quietly. “Thanks for walking me home Gus.” Harley said.
“No problem, I’ll see you around ok?” He watched as she went inside and locked the door. Gus walked back across the street and planted himself at a park bench and began to do his homework as he stood watch over Harley. Several hours later when he saw her brother coming up the street Gus disappeared and went home.
Later that night – Gus’s house
Gus was sitting at the kitchen table finishing up his homework while his mom was cooking and his little sister Eden was playing in the den.
“Daddy!” Gus heard Eden yell when his father Joe Augustino walked in from a day at the police station. Gus put up his books and set the table while his mom got everything ready.
“Hey son, did you have a good day?” Joe asked as he set Eden in her seat and then sat down. As they ate he told them about Harley and how he’d helped her get away from the bully Karl. Joe then told them a few things about the Santos case he and his partner were dealing with. While he was listening to his dad Gus noticed Eden had climbed out of her chair and was trying to climb in his lap.
“Nicky?” Eden loudly whispered making them all smile.
“What Eden?” Gus asked. “Will you play with me?” she asked. Gus looked at his dad who nodded he could leave the table before he answered, “Sure lets go.” He took Eden in the den and began to play with her and her toys while his parents finished dinner. He liked the feeling of seeing his parents together after his dad had a long day at the station and knowing that they were all safe.
A few minutes later, his dad came and sat in his favorite chair to read the paper. His mom had taken Eden upstairs to bed. Gus climbed in the chair with Joe as they began to read the funny pages together like they always did after dinner. They both laughed and smiled at the comics when Gus saw a police officer in the picture and smiling up at his dad said,
“I did a good thing by helping Harley today?” he asked. Joe put the paper down and looked at his son “Yes, you did, I would have done the same thing. That’s part of my job is to help people you know that.” Gus nodded. “Now you go to bed and I’ll be there in a minute ok?” Joe said. Gus hopped off the chair and went to his room.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Meanwhile….
Frank and Harley were cleaning up the dishes after dinner when he asked, “Did you finish all your homework?” “Yes, I finished it all.” Frank dried his hands, “You want me to check it?” he asked. She nodded as she dried her hands and ran to get her books while Frank waited at the table. Harley came back and sat down as he began to help her figure out some of her math problems she had wrong.
A while later, after he had helped Harley with an assignment he told her it was time for her bath and to get going. While she was in the bathroom Frank asked, “Did Karl give you any problems?” When Harley didn’t say anything Frank had his answer, “What happen?”
“He wouldn’t let me pass to come home and he grabbed my books, and when I caught up with him I kicked him in the shins.” She answered. Frank listened to his sister through the door shaking his head. “How’d you get home?” Frank asked. “My friend Gus helped me and he walked me home to make sure I got here safely.” She said.
“Okay kiddo bath time’s over come on.” He said as sat on the couch and waited for her to get her pajamas on. When she came out she walked in front of him as she said “I gotta go kiss Pops goodnight.” Harley stated. “Okay go kiss him.” Frank said smiling as he watched Harley run to their grandfather’s room.
When she came back he picked her up and carried her to her room. After he covered her up he kissed her, “I love you.” Frank said as he turned out the light. “I love you to Frank.” Harley said as she closed her eyes. Five minutes later she heard him leave to go to the chop shop and work.
Harley opened her eyes and looked at the moon in her window and stared at the stars, “Goodnight Gus.” Harley whispered. While Harley was staring out her window; Gus was doing the same as he watched the stars, “Goodnight Harley.” He whispered as he closed his eyes.
Little did they know that they were destined to be a part of each other’s lives forever?
Soulmates... Chapter 2
I’m moving time up just a little. It has been two weeks and Gus has been there to walk Harley home so Karl won’t bug her. During the past two weeks they have become friends; they have talked and laughed. They have both come to realize they like being with each other and have been together as much as possible. Frank still hasn’t met Gus.
This chapter is a little different ~ since sometimes friends can see through what adults can’t. Hope you like it.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
As Harley walked into the diner after school she grabbed her snack from Frank and then sat down and started her homework as she ate. She started on her math homework while she was there so Frank could help her. “NO NO! That’s not right.” Harley mumbled as she erased her answer. “What’s wrong Sis?” Frank said hearing her frustration and coming over to see what was wrong. “Stupid fractions.” She answered without looking up as Frank sat down to help her. After he’d helped her she looked at him
“I’m going to go home, I promise I’ll lock the door Frank.” She said as he walked her to the door and nodded as he watched her walk down the street. As she walked home she thought about Gus’s walking her home. She smiled as she thought of how easy it was to be herself with him and how easy it was for them to talk and laugh together. She remembered what he’d said to her just last week, he’d said, “I’m glad we’re friends, I like knowing I have a friend I can count on.” Harley had smiled as he let his hand hang down beside hers but they weren’t touching when she had answered, “Me too Gus.”
When Harley reached her street she hoped Karl wouldn’t be outside so she could go home in peace. However, she wasn’t so lucky because when she got three houses away from his; he walked down his steps. “Pip squeak, I thought I told you to stay off my street.” Karl said as he met her out in front of his house. “You did but Karl you don’t own this street – this is my street to, so back off.” Harley replied.
“Better go home to mom and dad Harley.” Karl said with a smirk. “Oops, you don’t have a mom and dad you’ve only got big brother Frank.” Before either of them could say anything she heard Gus behind her.
“Why don’t you pick on somebody your own size for once Karl?” Gus growled when he saw Harley’s face go white. “What’s it to ya Augustino?” Karl asked. He started to take a swing at Gus when he yelled,
“Harley go home, I’ll meet you there okay.” He replied. “But Gus?” she started to say but he didn’t let her finish – “Harley go home! I’ll be okay.” He said again as he dodged Karl’s punch. She nodded and ran across the street and toward her back steps.
When she reached her back steps she sat down and waited for Gus, because he promised he would meet her there. A few minutes later, Harley looked up and smiled as he walked toward her. He sat down beside her and tried to smile; but flinched when he did. Harley saw him flinch, “What happened?” she asked when she saw his split lip. “Before I saw it coming Karl popped me one and gave me a fat lip however, he wasn’t able to finish cuz his mom told him to come in and get ready for dinner so, I guess his mom’s dinner was more important than hitting me!” Gus said smiling. “I’m glad he didn’t hurt you worse than a fat lip, Thanks for helping me.” Harley said. “Anytime, aren’t you supposed to go in now?” Gus asked. “I don’t want to yet.” Was all she said?
Gus smiled as they sat in silence for a while until he heard Harley take a deep breath and sigh.
“What’s wrong Harley?” Gus asked when he looked over toward her. “Nothing really.” She said quietly. He could tell by the way she answered him that something was wrong so he tipped her chin where he could see her and saw the unshed tears in her eyes. “Don’t tell me nothing’s wrong, I could see it in your eyes when I walked up back there. What did Karl say that upset you?” he asked. “I don’t know if I can tell you?” she answered. Watching her Gus leaned back against the stair rail then said, “We are friends Harley.” He laid his hand beside hers on the step, “you know you can tell me anything, just like I know I can talk to you about anything.” He replied. “I can?” she said. “Yup always, let’s make a pact right here that we will always talk to each other okay.” He asked. “Deal?” she answered as they shook on it.
They sat side by side as Harley wondered how he’d take her news about her parents. He waited quietly, “Karl made a crack about me not having a mom and dad.” She said.
“You want to tell me about them?” Gus asked softly.
“I don’t really remember too much. But I don’t know who my dad is other than he’s dead, he never knew about me but I know mama called him Buzz. Mama, I love her so much but after daddy died she had bigger dreams for herself than a wife and mother so she deserted me and my brother and left him to raise me so we came to stay with Pops my grandfather who runs the diner.” “Frank loves me though and I love him.” Harley replied. Just as she stopped her stomach rumbled and they both laughed. “I’ll be right back Gus.” She said as she ran inside.
A few minutes later she came back and hand Gus a plate with a slice of cherry pie on it and sat down and began to eat hers. “You went white when Karl made that last remark.” Gus said as he looked at her. Harley nodded, “Sometimes when people say though types of things to me it just hits me hard how much I do wish for my mom and dad. Then I just want to cry because I wish I could see them and be there little girl.” She said wiping away tears.
Gus saw how unhappy this made her and he wanted her to be happy. He just knew that they would always be friends. “Does Frank know?” Gus asked.
“That sometimes people say things to me?” she shook her head no. “He would just want to go beat up whoever said that to me. Plus it’s too hard for me to tell him how sometimes I wish they could just hug me and tell me they love me.” She answered.
Before either one of them could say anything they both heard footsteps coming and stopped. Gus jumped up and ran to the side of the house. He peeked around the corner and saw it was Frank coming so he ran back to Harley.
“It’s your brother coming home.” He said. “I’d better go before your brother catches me here and he sees you’re not in the house.” She nodded as she said, “Thanks for being my friend Gus.” He winked as he said, “Anytime! Now you’d better get inside.” He watched as she opened the door and stepped inside.
“Harley!” Gus called. When she turned to look at him he said, “You will always have me. I’ll see you tomorrow.” He said as she nodded and smiled and closed the door. Gus listened as she locked the door then turned and ran toward his house.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Gus’s House
Gus ran through the door and to the kitchen a few minutes before his dad got home. As he stood in kitchen Eden came in and noticed his fat lip.
“OOOHHHH! Nicky what happened to you.” She asked. His mom turned and saw his lip too. “Gus what happened come here.” She said as she began to clean his lip. Before he could answer Joe walked in and sat down.
“Joe you need to have a talk with Gus.” Angela said as she turned Gus around so Joe could see him. “Come here son.” Joe asked as Gus went to him.
“What happened?” his dad asked as he examined Gus’s lip.
“I had just met up with Harley so I could walk her home so Karl wouldn’t tease her and when I got there Karl was already starting to tease her so I told her to go home I’d see her there and before I had completely turned to face Karl he popped me one dad. I didn’t see it honest and I promise I didn’t hit back. Before he hit me anymore Karl had to go in his house.”
“Okay son, is Harley okay?” Joe asked. “Yeah she is I went by to make sure she got home and she did.” Gus replied looking at his dad. Even though he ate dinner his mind was on what Harley had told him.
As Gus got ready for bed that night he smiled as he remember just sitting with her on her back steps today with his friend.
Harley’s house
As Frank put Harley in bed and kiss her goodnight she smiled as she told him she loved him and he smiled as he turned out her light. She listened to him leave; before she fell asleep she remembered all she’d told Gus today and how he’d never laughed at her or made fun of her because of what she’d told him.
As they both always did since meeting each other they watched the stars as in one house you heard a little girl quietly say, “Goodnight Gus.” And in another house not that far away you heard a little boy say, “Goodnight Harley.” As they both looked at the stars.
Soulmates... Chapter 3
Joe Augustino was sitting at his desk at the police station while he and his partner Roy Baker did paperwork and went over notes of the Santos case they were working on. While they sat there running ideas off of each other; Chief Thompson walked up to them.
“Augustino, Baker, I need you guys to fill in for two beat cops who are sick today, I know you guys don’t do beats a lot but I need you today.” He said as he sat on the corner of a desk.
“Sure chief.” Roy said looking at Joe who was nodding in agreement.
“What beat are we watching sir?” Joe asked. “It is the 5th street beat Joe.” The chief replied. They both nodded as they made sure their Holsters were strapped and left the station.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Joe and Roy drove down 5th every hour checking the neighborhood. When they weren’t driving through the neighborhood they were parked a safe distant watching everything and everybody.
They had just finished lunch thirty minutes earlier when Roy checked his watch and saw that it was 2:15. “School’s getting ready to get out Joe.” Roy said. “I know, now is the time to watch these kids coming home.” Joe said as he began to see a group of 5 kids who were talking and laughing walk together toward their homes. Both officers talked off and on during the afternoon as they watched kids come and go with better things to do. About 2:45 they drove through the neighborhood again before they parked back in the spot they were before which was an empty parking lot which faced down 5th street.
Both Joe and Roy were looking out the side windows and not watching the street in front of them until a little girl walking down the street caught their attention; they would have not thought anything of it except she looked like she was scared of running into someone. As they watched they saw a kid who looked like he was 13 or 14 step out on the sidewalk and stand directly in the little girl’s path.
Harley walked slowly down the street hoping Karl would not be home yet.
“Hey little girl!” Karl said laughing when she looked up. “Karl what do you want now?” she asked. “I told you to stay off my street Harley.” He repeated to her. Harley stamped her foot in frustration and blew out a breath before she said angrily
“I can’t stay off your street Karl! You don’t own this street. I live here too and I walk down this street to get home.”
As Joe and Roy watched Joe couldn’t help but smile as he heard her words. While they continued to watch they heard Karl say “Well, if you want to get home pip squeak you have to give me the password before you pass, that’s how it works on this street.”
“You know I don’t know the password.” Harley answered. “Then I guess you can’t get home.” He said smugly.
Harley tried to step around him and go passed him, as she stepped around him Karl grabbed her arm and stopped her. “Uh uh I don’t think so.”
“Oh come on Karl, will you back off, let me go.” Harley said to him as he kept holding her arm. He shook his head no.
As the two cops down the street watched, Roy slammed his hand on the steering wheel, “I’m going to go stop that little punk.” He mumbled. Joe looked at him, “Not yet she’s managing on her own okay but we’ll be watching.” He said.
“But Joe!” Roy said. “Not yet.” he repeated.
They continued to watch as Karl kept teasing Harley and blocking her path every time she tried to step. When Harley tried to step around Karl one more time he grabbed her book bag off her shoulder and Roy said, “that’s it Joe, we have to do something, I’m not letting him hurt that little girl.” Joe nodded and they were just about to get out of the cruiser when Joe looked up and saw someone coming down the sidewalk.
“Wait Roy, look.” He said quietly.
“What? I’m going to go take care of the bully for her.” He answered frustrated. He looked at what Joe was looking at and he saw the boy walking toward the little girl. Roy watched and listened as did Joe when they heard
“Karl I thought I told you to pick on someone your own size!” Gus said as he stopped a few feet from Harley.
Both Joe and Roy looked at each other when Joe smiled, “That’s Gus’s voice.” Roy said. Joe nodded as Gus continued, “Come on Harley – let’s go.” He said taking her hand and the officer’s watched as both Gus and Harley ran across the street. Joe jumped out and watched his son as he walked her home.
“So you’re Harley.” Joe whispered as he watched them disappear around the back of a house. Now he had a face to go with the name he’d heard his son say Goodnight to every night.
Gus and Harley ran around to her back steps and sat down. “Are you okay Harley?” Gus asked. She nodded looking at him, “Yeah I’m okay.” Gus laid his hand beside hers as he said, “I want you to do something for me okay?”
“What?” Harley asked.
“From now on, if you don’t see me waiting close by when you leave the diner will you walk home the way I showed you? I’ll meet you back here on your back steps.” He asked. She thought for a minute before saying anything, “Why Gus?” she asked. “Because I don’t want Karl to hurt you Harley.” He said quietly.
Harley looked at him closely and saw that something was bothering him. “Something’s bothering you, what is it?” Harley asked. When he looked up his eyes were stormy.
“My dad’s a cop Harley.” Gus waited to see her reaction and when she didn’t shy away from him he continued, “I’m worried about a case my dad and his partner are working on. He’s very preoccupied right now and I’m scared something’s going to happen to him.”
Harley could see he was worried but she didn’t know what to say so she leaned over and hugged him. When she hugged him; Gus laid his head on her shoulder and closed his eyes tight. They talked for a few minutes before Gus watched her as she went in the house and lock the door. He continued to sit on her back steps for awhile. From the window Harley saw him sitting there
“I’ll always be with you Gus.” She quietly said to herself.
Back at the police cruiser, Joe stood staring at the spot where he saw them disappear and he said
“I can see that she’s important to you son. The kind of friends you are too each other now; you’ll need. She will always be with you. You will need her.”
“Come on Joe. Let’s go! Roy said. As he climbed in he said “Treasure her and her friendship son, that’s what I wish for you.”
Joe looked back at the spot where he’d seen Harley and as they drove away he thought to himself, “He’ll need you with him Harley, he doesn't know it yet but he will."

Soulmates... Chapter 4
I am moving time along month. Both Harley and Gus still spend time together. If Gus doesn’t walk Harley home; he is there waiting for her on the back steps. They have continued meeting; Frank has yet to meet Gus. Gus knows that if Frank finds out he will make Harley stop being friends with him and Frank will begin to walk her home. However, this is the chapter where the two main men in her life meet for the first time.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Harley sat in the middle of the den floor early Friday afternoon folding her laundry so she could spend the rest of her three day weekend doing nothing. While she folded her laundry Frank cleaned the house. He was cleaning the counter when the doorbell rang.
“I’ll get it sis.” He said as he walked to the door. When he opened the door he saw a boy standing there with his hands in his pockets.
“Hi, is Harley here?” Gus asked.
Harley dropped the sock she’d been folding when she heard Gus’s voice. She stood and walked to the door and as she reached it she said,
“Gus what are you doing here?” Frank looked at Gus “Sis get away from him. I don’t want you anywhere near --.” Harley didn’t let Frank finish as she said “Frank this is my friend Gus, the one I told you about who walks me home so Karl won’t bug me.” Frank nodded as she continued, “Gus, this is my brother Frank.” Gus stepped forward and held out his hand, “Nice to meet you Frank.” He reluctantly shook Gus’s hand.
“What are you doing here Gus?” Frank asked him as he stood with a protective arm around Harley.
“I came to see if Harley wanted to come to the park with me for awhile.” Gus said. He saw her nod and smile even as Frank said, “Not today she can’t.” She stared at him for a minute before she said, “Hold on a second Gus!” He nodded even as he watched Harley take Frank by the arm and pull him away from the door.
“What do you mean I can’t today Frank?” Harley asked quietly. Frank knelt in front of her as he said, “I’m not going to let you go play with some hoodlum who likes to make trouble.” Harley looked back at Gus for a second and when she did she could see he needed a friend. “Gus isn’t a hoodlum! He is my friend Frank and I want to go spend time with him.” Harley said loudly.
“No you can’t Harley!” Frank said just as loudly.
“Now, Now, what’s all this noise?” Pops said coming into the den. As he walked in he saw Gus standing in the door so he walked over to him. “Hello, young man.” He said as he shook Gus’s hand. “How are you sir, I’m Gus a friend of Harley’s” Pops nodded as he said, “I’m Pops, Harley’s grandfather and I run The Diner.” Frank and Harley heard their grandfather’s voice and turned to face him.
“Hey Pops would you tell her that she can’t go play with this hoodlum.” Frank asked. “Frank let Harley go spend time with her friend.” Pops said quietly. “But Pops!” Frank replied.
“No, Frank! Harley you and Gus go ahead.” He said as he watched Harley slip her jacket on and walk to the door.
“Thanks Pops, I love you.” Harley said as she kissed him on the cheek. As Harley walked beside Gus, he turned back and said to her grandfather, “Sir will be at the park okay?” Pops smiled as he nodded and replied, “You both have fun! Harley be home by dinner and Gus call me Pops everyone does.” They both nodded as he smiled and watch them run off.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Park
Gus and Harley walked slowly through the park until Gus sat under a tree across from the swings and pulled Harley down to sit beside him. “What did you do today?” Harley asked looking at him.
Gus smiled at her, “today was my dad’s day off so while my mom took Eden shopping for shoes Dad took me to see Star Wars, and it was so cool I want to be Luke Skywalker; he’s great.” While Gus was starting to tell her about the movie, Harley stood up and walked to the swings and sat down on one facing Gus and listened to him. He smiled as he jumped up and walked behind her and began to slowly push her on the swing as they continued talking about the movie.
After thirty minutes of pushing her on the swing Gus became quiet, he didn’t talk about the movie and stopped pushing the swing. He walked back to sit under the tree and sat there staring in Harley’s direction but not seeing her. When the swing stopped she sat there looking at him and saw how upset he’d gotten when he’d quit talking. She stood and walked back to him and sat in front of him.
“Gus something’s wrong what is it?” Harley said when he focused on her.
“Can I talk to you Harley?” he asked quietly. She nodded, “can I ask you something first though?” He nodded as she continued, “Why did you come to the park today?”
Gus looked at her, “I usually come here to think and it’s usually to this spot because I also like to watch the sunset from here.” He took a deep breath so he could continue, “Something happened at the movies today that I had to think about – but I didn’t want to be alone while I thought about it so that’s why I came to see you.”
“Tell me what happened?” Harley said as Gus laid his hand between them.
“It happened about half way through the movie, Dad was coming back from getting us snacks and I was watching him walk back to our seats. He was two seats away from me when he’d dropped a box of Milk duds and didn’t realize it. I was looking through our snacks when Dad said something to me about the candy. He looked up when a little boy about my age handed me the milk duds; dad had a really strange look on his face.
I saw the look on his face so I followed the direction of his gaze and he was staring at the guy who's sitting four seats away from us. The man was wearing a white suit and had a panama hat balanced on his knee, and he had two kids with him. The one that was about my age handed me the candy dad had dropped. I remembered watching the man as he smiled at my dad. Harley when I looked up at my dad today he was watching them; I could tell the way that he was looking at them, I knew not to ask. He sat there for the rest of the movie not smiling and not moving. After we left the show today he didn't laugh or joke around with me like we usually do.”
Harley moved to sit right beside Gus as she asked, “Do you know who the man was?”
He shook his head no as he leaned back against the tree. “Dad’s been really preoccupied with a case lately and I wonder if the man has something to do with it.” He sat there looking out into space for a long time as he thought about what had happened today. Harley continued to watch him as he stared into space; he was her friend and she wanted to help him but she didn’t know how. She smiled when she thought of how they’d become best friends in such a short period of time and how much they had both come to rely on each other.
Sometime later, without looking at her; he reached over and grabbed her hand and held on to it as if she was the only thing that was constant in his life right now. They sat in silence for a while when she said, “I don’t know what to do for you Gus?”
“You don’t have to do anything, Harley you’re the only one that really understands me. Just having you with me and knowing I can talk to you is all I need.” He said quietly.
Gus looked at her, “We gotta get you home Harley come on.” He said as he stood and helped her up. When they turned they watched as the sun began to set slowly turning the sky the colors of purple, red, pink, and blue. “I see why you like the sunset Gus.” Harley said when they started walking home.
When they reached her back steps Gus stopped, “Thanks for coming with me today Harley.” She smiled, “You’re welcome.” He watched as she walked up the steps and disappeared through the door.
Gus’s house
Gus walked into the kitchen just as his mom had finished dinner. He washed his hands as he listened to his parents talked. Joe was sitting in his chair when he came back to the kitchen.
“Hey dad!” Gus said as he sat down. “Hey son, where did you go when we got home.” Joe asked. “I went by Harley’s and then we went to the park for the day.” Gus replied as they ate. A little later the phone rang and Joe went to answer it. When he came back he looked at Angela
“Sweetie, I have to go to the station for a while alright? I’ll be back later.” She nodded when she saw that look in his eyes. He finished his dinner quickly and then turned to Gus, “Be good and I’ll see you later.” He said. Gus saw something in the look that his parents shared that made him walk to his dad and hug him as he said, “ Goodnight Dad, I love you.”
“I love you to son be good.” Joe said as he turned and hugged Eden goodnight.
Later that night Gus climbed in bed and watched the stars as he quietly replied, “Goodnight Harley.”

Soulmates... Chapter 5
Joe’s death will take place over 2 chapters…Story wise not all of it will match Gus’s history. Just know this was not an easy chapter to write!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Gus thrashes around in bed as a dream grips him in its clutches and doesn’t let go. He is talking to his dad as they come out of the movie theater. After getting money from his dad, he runs across the street to the ice cream truck. He doesn’t know what makes him want to look back; but he turns and looks back just as he sees the man in the white suit smile and then aim his gun and fire. Seeing his dad as he falls he starts to run toward him. “Dad NO…!” Gus wakes up in a cold sweat not knowing that what he dreamed about has come true.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Early Saturday morning at Movie Theater
Joe and Roy were standing in their places at the movie theater just as they were told to be. He was told after he’d gotten to the station earlier that night that something was coming in tonight on Miguel’s orders and it would take place in front of the movie theater.
He and his partner along with four other officers we stationed in various places in front of the building. All six officers were watching for the runners when somewhere behind him Joe heard a noise. When he turned to see what the noise was; he saw Miguel Santos smiling then he raised his gun and took aim and fired. Joe looked at Miguel as the car drove away. Joe heard running coming toward him. When the other officers reached Joe he was on the ground. Roy reached him first.
“Joe, hang on buddy help's coming!” he said as the other officers kneel around their fallen friend trying to stop the blood but knowing they couldn’t. Joe slowly looked at Roy, “Take care of my family Roy, please?” he whispers. When Roy nods Joe continues as he slowly slips away, “I love you Angela, now and always, My baby girl, Daddy love’s you. Gus, son I love you, you’re growing into a good caring man that I know you’ll be some day. I love you all.” As Joe heard the sirens in the distance everything went dark and he slipped away.
When Roy looked up, there were tears in his eyes as he asked, “Williams did you get it on tape?” The officer nodded as he replied, “I held his wire mike closer when he started talking. Back in the surveillance van that was parked out of sight down the street Chief Thompson sat in his seat as he listened to the last words of one of his best officers. While the paramedics dealt with Joe the four other officers stayed with him as Roy took off down the street to talk to the chief. Standing outside of the van when Roy walked up was Chief Thompson and he was holding a cassette tape.
“I’m going with you Roy.” The chief said. Roy nodded as both men slowly got in the cruiser and headed to the Augustino house.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Later that morning…
Angela was outside watering her flowers when she heard a car pull up in front of the house. Turning she saw Roy get out of the car and instead of seeing her husband get out she saw Chief Thompson as both men started walking toward her. With a feeling of dread she turned and walked back in the house leaving the front door open. When they walked in they saw her sitting on the couch.
“He’s gone isn’t he Roy?” she asked quietly. Roy nodded as he gently hugged her and held her as she cried. “What happened?” she asked, the chief began saying, “we were watching a bust when Joe heard something behind him and when he turned he was shot, Angela.”
“NOOO!!!” Gus screamed as he ran into the den from his room where he’d heard everything. Roy caught him as he ran by and held him still as Angela told him what happened to Daddy.
“We have something you need to hear Angela.” Roy said as he stood and went to get the tape player. Gus sat very still not moving and not shedding a tear. Roy came back and sat the tape player on the coffee table as he said, “All of the officers were wired for this job so this came from the mike Joe was wearing.” Angela nodded as she slipped her hand in Gus’s and they both listened to the tape Chief Thompson had placed in the tape player.
“I love you Angela, now and always; My baby girl, Daddy love’s you. Gus, son I love you, you’re growing into a good caring man that I know you’ll be some day. I love you all.” After the tape finished Angela sat there crying while Gus felt like his heart was breaking in a million pieces. He didn’t want to believe his dad was dead… he couldn’t believe dad was dead. Gus sat on the couch; he was there, but didn’t really feel like he was there. It was as if everything was in slow motion.
He saw his mom stand and hug Roy. He heard Roy say, “Angela, if you or the kids ever need anything let me know.” He could hear Roy but Gus couldn’t understand him it was like he was hearing everything from a far off place and there was a buzzing in his ears.
Gus jumped off the couch and went to the kitchen to fix him some breakfast, all three adults watched him leave the den. While he fixed him some cereal he thought to himself, “Dad will be home later today.” After he finished his breakfast he didn’t say another word as he went to get dressed and make up his bed. When he came out of his room he saw Angela trying to explain to Eden that Daddy wasn’t coming back.
Angela stopped him as he came out of his room, “Gus, honey Chief Thompson informed me that Daddy’s funeral will be Monday.” Gus stopped still and looked at her.
“I’ll be back later, I’m going to the park!” he replied as he ran from the house.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Harley’s
Pops, Frank, and Harley were just finishing breakfast when Frank looked at Pops, “Where’s the paper?” “I haven’t gotten yet so it’s still probably on the front steps Frank.” Pops said. Before Frank could move Harley said, “I’ll be back in a minute I’m going to get dressed.” Both Frank and Pops nodded as they watched her run to her room. Fifteen minutes later after Frank himself had gotten dressed he went to the front steps and got the morning paper. Harley was sitting at the table eating a pop tart while Pops was doing the dishes. When Frank sat down he opened the paper and saw the headline:
POLICE OFFICE KILLED IN A MOB HIT!
Early this morning a mob hit was carried out when police officer Joseph Augustino was gunned down in front of the movie theater. This officer worked in the Organized Crime Division and was investigating the Santos Crime family. We were told that he was close to bringing Miguel Santos down and also that there was a lot of pressure being put on the family; and that Officer Augustino, his partner and the head of the Organized Crime Division wouldn’t back off of the Santos family for their involvement in mob related activities. It was reported to us, and I quote: "Interviews with informants corroborate that the killing was a mob hit personally authorized by Miguel Santos.”
Officer Augustino is survived by his wife Angela and two children.
After he scanned the story he said “Oh man!” Pops turned what is it Frank?” he asked. “It’s the front page headline and story, listen to this.” Frank said as he began to read the front page story. When he finished reading the story Frank noticed that Harley had stopped squirming and she was starring at him.
“Harley what’s wrong?” Frank asked. “What did you say the Cop’s name was?” she asked quietly. “Joseph Augustino – why?” he replied.
“That’s Gus’s dad!” Harley replied as she jumped up and ran to the den to grab her shoes. “Where are you going Harley?” Frank asked. “I’m going to find Gus!” she yelled from the other room. “Ohh no you are not! You aren’t going to find that hoodlum.” Frank shouted. “Ohh yes I am.” She said walking back to the kitchen.
“He’s my friend and he needs me.” She said. Pops turned to look at his granddaughter and saw how determined she was to see Gus. Pops began to make three roast beef sandwiches and cut the third in half. He placed them in bags and then put the three sandwiches in a paper bag along with cookies and sodas and then handed them to Harley when he said
“He probably won’t want lunch but here’s some food if both of you get hungry okay.” She nodded.
“Go find him Harley.” Pops said. Harley looked at her granddad, “I’ll be home by dinner.” She replied as she walked to the door. When she reached it Frank looked at her “Harley?” he asked. She looked at him and he saw in her eyes that he couldn't change her mind and with her hand on the doorknob she said,
“I’ll be at the park.” She said as she closed the door and ran to the park where she knew she’d find Gus.

Soulmates... Chapter 6
Chapter 6 will pick up where 5 left off since this chapter covers the second half of Joe’s Death.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Park
Harley clutched the bag of food that Pops had fixed for them as she walked through the park toward the swings. She slowed as she approached the swings because she could see Gus sitting under a tree and didn’t want to scare him. When she reached him she sat down beside him and then waiting a minute while she propped the food against the tree she then said, “Hey Gus.” He turned and smiled at her, he’d known she was there behind him. He’d been wishing he could talk to her all day and here she was sitting beside him.
They sat in silence for awhile under the tree as Gus stared off into space. While he was staring off into space Harley began to really look at him and she saw how worn out he looked; and realized he hadn’t cried yet. As she continued to watch she saw his hand slip off his leg and hit the ground with his palm up. She gently laid her hand in his palm and just waited. She wasn’t going to push him to talk to her; he’d talk to her when he was ready. Without turning to look at him she felt when he linked his fingers through hers and held her hand.
A few minutes later Gus turned without letting go of her hand and looked at her.
“Hey Harley, what are you doing here?” he asked. Before she had a chance to answer he asked, “Are you ok? What’s wrong?” he said looking frightened. “I’m okay Gus, I promise.” She replied. Letting out a breath, “Okay good.” He said looking away from her.
She felt him squeeze her hand as she leaned back against the tree. Very slowly she said, “Gus look at me for a minute please?” He turned and focused on her eyes.
“I know about your dad Gus. I just wanted to make sure you were okay?” she said softly. He looked really confused “What about him Harley? He’s at work, he will be home tonight.” He replied.
She looked away from him not sure how to continue but knowing she had to. She started to take her hand out of his when he tightened his grip, “Don’t leave me!” he whispered as she heard the unshed tears in his voice. Placing her hand back in his, “I’m right here Gus, I’m not going anywhere!” she said looking at him when she felt him tilt her chin up, “Gus, do you want to talk about it?” she asked as she held their linked hands up for him to see to let him know it was okay.
“Nothing’s wrong, I promise.” He answered.
“Gus I saw the paper this morning --- your dad’s dead.” she said. “No he’s not! He’s working.” Gus said angrily. Looking at him she continued, “The paper said that Joseph Augustino was killed by a mob hit early this morning.”
Letting go of her hand he jumped up, “NO!” he said. “I saw the paper myself Gus!” she said. “Liar! You’re a liar ---Dad’s not dead!” he screamed. With tears in her eyes she looked up at him and saw he had his back to her. Standing she stayed in one spot when he turned to look at her she was nodding, “That’s why I came Gus so you wouldn’t have to be alone.” She said. “He’s not dead, Harley that’s mean!” Gus yelled as he took off running away from her. She watched him run for a minute before grabbing the food as she jumped up and ran after him. Following, she stayed with him as he ran through the trees. Behind him she could hear him repeating, “No! No!”
She watched as he ran until he got tired and dropped down to his knees in a clearing between the trees. Harley walked up and sank to her knees beside him. When she looked at him she could see the brightness of tears in his eyes.
Sitting back on his heels he whispered, “He’s really gone Harley.” Turning to sit in front of him she took his hand as she saw the tears start rolling down his cheeks. She leaned in and hugged him and he held on to her tight crying tears of pain as he thought of his father. Harley didn’t know they sat there as he cried but a little later he looked up and tried to smile.
“Thanks, Harley, I needed a friend.” He said. She smiled, “that’s why I’m here and will always be.” When she leaned against a tree she opened the bag of food and pulled out a sandwich and opened it and handed it to him. “Here take this.” She said. “What is all this?” he asked. As she pulled out the cookies and drinks she replied, “Pops didn’t want you to miss lunch so he made these sandwiches for us.” She answered looking up. “Pops knows where you are?” Gus asked. She nodded as she watched him begin to eat. Both Gus and Harley talked quietly as they ate their lunch and at some point he took Harley’s hand and linked his fingers with hers somehow realizing that having contact with her made him feel better even as he felt his heart breaking from missing his dad.
Later that day, as the sun started slowly sinking Gus stood and helped Harley stand and they began to walk home. While they walked home Gus said
“Harley, Dad’s funeral is on Monday could you be there?” She stopped, “Gus you know I would but I don’t think Frank will let me.” She said quietly. He looked down as she continued, “I’ll ask Pops if I can go, but if I’m not there – when she stopped he looked at here.”
“If you’re not there what?” Gus asked. She smiled, “I’ll meet you here okay and we can talk.” She said. He smiled “Okay, If you’re not there I’ll see you here” Gus said as they walked home.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Sunday
On this particular day everything was crazy in Gus’s opinion. His mom was trying to make sure the last minute arrangements for his dad’s funeral was taken care of before the service tomorrow. He saw so many police officers coming and going it was beginning to make his head spin. The chief and Roy had gotten there earlier and was helping his mom. He stayed on the porch most of the day, he knew if he was around all this he’d fall apart. Ever since yesterday with Harley in the park it felt like he was going to start crying and never stop every time he thought of his dad. Gus stared toward Harley’s house, he’d realized yesterday when he’d first seen her that she’d been there because of dad. But even as his heart was breaking he still didn’t want to believe he’d never see his dad ever again.
As he kept staring down the street he knew he wouldn’t see Harley tomorrow until after the funeral because Frank would never let her come.
Gus smiled as he thought of her and how much his dad would have liked her if he’d ever seen her or met her. He hoped one day he’d meet someone like her.
Monday afternoon…
Gus had never seen so many police officers at once. He’d stayed close to his mom and sister in case they needed anything. Gus looked out the window as Roy drove them to the cemetery and on both sides of the street he saw officers lined up and standing at attention as the cars passed by them. Once the service started he was very quiet when Chief Thompson had presented his mom a folded American flag and his dad’s badge. He tried not to cry and be strong for his dad but he felt the tears roll down his cheeks. After the service was over Gus stayed sitting where he was staring at his dad’s gravestone until his mom took him by the hand and lead him away.
Later that day…
Gus slowly walked through the park hoping Harley would be there. When he reached the swings he saw her sitting there waiting for him. Looking up she saw him as he sat down beside her and she saw the dried tears on his face.
“You came!” he said surprised. “Of course I came, I told you I would.” She replied. They sat there in silence for a little bit when Gus said, “I want to tell you about dad’s funeral.” She nodded “Harley I’d never seen so many officers before. They were on both sides of the street saluting as we drove by.” She leaned back as he continued, “the service was well I can’t explain it… They gave him a hero's funeral, you know. They treated him like a hero. I walked behind the casket with two of his friends and the bagpipes were playing and there was a folded flag and the gun salute. Yeah. Then a bugle played "taps" and then I sat down and I was okay and didn’t cry until they handed mom the folded American flag that was across his casket and his badge. Then after a prayer it was over.”
She turned to look at him when she said, “Gus it’s okay to cry; you know that. Your dad would understand.”
“I don’t know how I would have gotten through this without you Harley. You’re the only one that really knows me.” Gus said. She looked at him and when she did she saw the good man he would become one day.
“Harley do you mind if we just sit here awhile?” Gus asked. Turning her head she quietly said, “No we can stay here.” After about an hour Harley felt Gus slip his hand in hers as he softly said, “I love you dad, you’ll always be in my heart.”

Soulmates... Chapter 7
I am moving the story up to where both Gus and Harley are 16 years old. Gus is already 16 and Harley about to turn 16. Over 6 yrs. Gus and Harley’s friendship has become very strong and helped them celebrate the good and to deal with bad times. Frank has tried to get Harley to stop being friends with Gus but she refuses. Frank doesn’t like him and Gus knows it. In the 6yrs Pops has died. Eden has pushed Fredrico from the roof and Gus has just gotten out of Juvie a few months earlier. This chapter starts with Gus noticing Harley has been quiet that afternoon and he wants to make her smile.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Gus sat on Harley’s back steps watching her; he noticed she’d been quiet when he walked her home.
“Harley what is it?” he asked. She looked at him “Frank won’t let you come over tomorrow to help me celebrate my birthday.” She said quietly as she looked down again. “Harley, look at me.” Gus said when he took her hand. When she turned and looked at him he asked smiling at her, “Haven’t we always been together on our birthdays? I’ll be with you tomorrow I’ll find a way you know that.” “But Frank!” she said. Squeezing her hand he said, “I’ll talk to Frank I’m not missing your 16th birthday.”
“What do you want to do tomorrow?” Gus asked. “I don’t know something fun and special.” She said. He nodded, “Okay but it will happen after you’ve had time with Frank, you know him; he doesn’t want you to spend time with this hoodlum anyway.” He said laughing.
“Don’t say that, you’re not a hoodlum Gus!” Harley said angrily as she stood and walked away from him. “Harley I’m sorry.” Gus said softly. “It’s just you’re the only one that doesn’t see me that way. Ever since I got out of juvenile hall Frank’s been even worse on me than when we were ten.” But I understand how he feels.
“Why do you understand Frank?” Harley asked. “Because I’m the big brother too and just like I did what I had to do to keep Eden safe, Frank will do what he has to do to keep you safe Harley?” Gus said as he slid down a step so he could look at her.
Harley saw Gus’s face change at the mention of his sister so she asked, “Have you heard anything about Eden lately?” Shaking his head no he answered, “You know I went last week to see her at the convent where’s she’s in school.” She nodded and waited for him to continue, “She asked me why she couldn’t come home with me. I told her that I needed to keep her safe from anything the Santos could try since Fredrico was killed.” “Did she understand?” Harley asked. “Yeah, but I miss her you know; she’s the only family I have left since mom died two years ago.” He replied.
Before they could continue, the back door opened and Frank stepped out. “Harley come in the house!” he said. Gus squeezed her hand and nodded as they stood up. “I’ll see you okay?” Harley asked. Gus smiled, “Definitely!” he said as he watched her walk past Frank and in to the house.
“Frank, wait a minute please? Can I talk to you?” he asked. Frank let the back door slam as he walked to stand in front of Gus. “What do you want?” Frank asked as Gus saw him slip his hands in his pockets.
“Harley’s birthday is tomorrow and I wanted to take her to the carnival then out for something to eat. I know you don’t like me but she’s my best friend; will you let me do this?” Gus asked. He watched as Frank folded his arms in front of his chest, “No, this is my day to be with my sister!” Frank replied. Gus shifted his weight, “I know it is; and I’d never take any time away from you and her—you know that. But Harley really wants me to be with her tomorrow and I’m not going to let her down and I really want to do this for her.” He answered.
He watched for five minutes as Frank paced back and forth in front of him. When Frank finally stood in front of him again, he said, “She really wants this?” Gus only nodded as he continued, “You know I don’t like you and if you hurt my sister you’ll answer to me, Got it Gus?” Smiling he said, “I got it Frank, I’d never hurt Harley.” Frank walked away toward the door when he said, “I’ll have a birthday lunch with her and you can take her to the carnival tomorrow night.” As Gus walked down the steps toward home he said, “Thanks Frank!”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Lunch -- The next day
Harley walked in the kitchen to see Frank cooking hamburgers, and French fries. She saw the sodas sitting on the kitchen table. Frank turned as he heard her come into the kitchen, “Sis, sit down these will be ready in a minute.” He said as he scooped up the last of the fries.
“Frankie what are you doing?” Harley asked. “Well, I’m having a birthday lunch with you now since you’ve got plans tonight. He said as he placed a hamburger and fries on a plate and handed it to her. “I assume you have plans with Gus tonight for your birthday since he’s always with you on your birthday. “You’re going to let him spend it with me?” Harley asked as they ate. Frank rolled his eyes as he answered “I might as well, he’ll find a way to see you today anyway.” Harley jumped up and ran around and hugged Frank
“Oh, thank you Frank!” Harley replied smiling as she kissed him and then sat back down. When they finished lunch Frank walked to the oven and pulled out a pan of baklava and set it on the table in front of Harley. “Happy Birthday Sis” Frank said after he’d gotten more plates and sat down. After they ate desert Frank handed her a package and watched while she opened it. Her eyes got big as she slowly pulled out bracelet with a silhouette charm of a girl’s head dangling from it. Harley’s eyes snapped up to Frank
“How did you afford this Frank?” she asked quietly. “Its okay sis, do you like it? I thought you’d like a charm bracelet for your 16th birthday.” Frank replied smiling as he fastened the bracelet around her wrist. “I love it Frank thank you,” Harley answered kissing his cheek. “Good! Now go get ready, if I know Gus he’ll be here in a little while.” Frank said. Harley nodded and ran to change.

Soulmates... Chapter 7 Continued
A little while later, Frank opened the door when a knock sounded and let Gus in. “She’ll be here in a minute.” Frank said. Harley stopped in front of her door before Gus had a chance to see her and just looked at him. She couldn’t hide the smile when she saw him in faded blue jeans, a black t-shirt, and black leather jacket. She thought to herself as she watched him, “He looks really, really good!”
At the door, Frank turned and shouted, “Harley, Gus is here!” Harley turned at her door and opened it then closed it hard enough to be heard before she walked in the den where her brother and Gus were waiting. When Gus saw her he smiled as she ran to him and he picked her up in a tight hug and spun her around as he said, “Happy Birthday Harley!” then put her down. “Thanks.” She said as she smiled shyly.
“Are you ready to go?” Gus asked. She nodded as she turned and said, “I won’t be late Frank.” He nodded as they walked out the door and got in the car. In the car Harley asked, “Where are we going?” “You’ll see!” Gus said as he drove off.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Carnival
He watched Harley’s eyes light up as they walked the mid way at the carnival. They had ridden a lot of the rides and looked at some exhibits. The only ride they had yet to ride was the Ferris wheel and they were walking there when Harley stopped and said, “Oh Gus look, what a cute teddy bear. Gus smiled, “Do you want it?” he asked. She nodded as he went to the booth where you threw baseballs at bottles and listen to the guy in charge tell him what he had to do. The guy gave Gus four baseballs and watched as he knocked down all 6 bottles with two balls. After he’d finished the barker gave Gus his choice of prizes and the bear was among them.
When he walked back to Harley he handed her the bear as he smiled, “Here you go m’lady.” Harley held the bear tight as they walked to the Ferris wheel. Once they were locked in the seat and the ride started Gus noticed the bracelet and asked Harley about it.
“Frank gave it to me, this afternoon.” She said. “It’s pretty.” Gus said just as they reached the top. “Harley look up, we get to share the stars together tonight, instead of separately.” Gus said remembering what Harley had told him about saying goodnight to him on the stars; he felt Harley lean back and rest her head on his arm. She smiled at him as she looked over at him. When the ride was over they headed toward Gus’s car after they’d decided to go and get something to eat.
Gus drove to a restaurant and picked up some sandwiches and drinks and then headed to the beach. Once they were at the beach Harley stood waiting with the food as Gus grabbed a blanket from the back and then they headed down the beach. When they were settled on the blanket Harley asked, “You planned this didn’t you?” Gus winked at her as he said
“Yep, I wouldn’t let your birthday pass without something special.” They talked as they ate their sandwiches on the beach under the stars. When they were finished eating Gus looked at Harley and said, “Close your eyes.” Harley smiled as she did as he asked. Gus pulled two cupcakes from the bag and stuck a candle in one then taping the package that was part of his present to the cupcake before he lit the candle.
After he lit the candle, he looked at Harley for a minute as he thought of how beautiful she was then picking up the cupcake, “Open your eyes.” Gus said softly as she looked at him. Smiling he said “Happy Birthday beautiful.” as she blew out the candle. When Gus turned the cupcake where she could see the present she laughed as he watched as her eyes lit up and she took the present.
“Gus, I love it!” She said as she slowly and carefully took the small star charm out and placed it on the bracelet. “That’s only part of your present Harley.” Gus said as he handed her his present. Before handing it to her he said, “I brought you here because I wanted you to open this under the stars.” She took the present and opened it and inside she saw a silver necklace with a star. “I know it’s not much but when I saw it I thought of you.” Gus said. “It’s perfect thank you! Help me put it on.” Harley asked as she lifted her hair and Gus closed the clasp.
Gus hugged her tightly as he said, I hope tonight was fun and special.” Harley nodded as she said, “Tonight was special, the carnival, here at the beach and being with my best friend.” Gus nodded as he loosened his hold on her but didn’t let go, he gently leaned in and placed his lips softly on hers as both Gus and Harley had there very first kiss. When they looked at each other they smiled as Gus winked at her.
“We have to get you home Harley.” Gus said as he helped her up and together hand in hand and each smiling they headed for Gus’s car.
Soulmates... Chapter 8
Moving time up a year – Frank has been working on the police force for about a year; so he’s gone for the day. Gus is 18 and Harley is not quiet 18 yet. In one of their many talks they have talked about what they want to do after high school and Gus told her he would like to go to college. Harley talked him into applying and now they are waiting for any news.
Park
Harley is leaning against a tree lost in thought as she thinks back to a day several months ago in April when Gus came to her and wanted to talk to her.
She’d open the door when she heard the doorbell ring and saw Gus standing there looking good in jeans and a white button-up shirt with the sleeves rolled past his elbows and his leather jacket. She smiled when he said, “Hey Beautiful!” and took her hand in his. She reached up and kissed his cheek just before he asked, “Can you go for a walk with me –I need to talk to you.” She nodded, “Sure, come on lets go.” She said as closed and locked the door and then slipped her hand back in his as they headed for the park.
Once they were there they sat down as Harley asked, “What did you want to talk about Gus?” He looked at her when he said, “I finally know what I want to do after I graduate.” “That’s great!” she said squeezing his hand “what?” she asked.
“I want to go to college Harley. Then after college go through the Police Academy training and become a cop.” He said as he carefully looked at her, “Does that make sense?” She nodded as she turned to sit in front of him. “You want to study law right?” she answered. “Yeah.” He said softly “Am I being stupid Harley? A guy like me trying to go to college and study law.” He asked. “Gus, you are not stupid, so quit thinking like that—you can do anything you want. Have you picked any good law schools?” she asked.
When he looked at her she saw the frightened little boy look in his eyes that he got when he was scared. “Yeah, I applied to Harvard even though I know it’s a really long shot and George town University along with several others.” he answered softly. Before either continued Gus noticed she was shivering and asked
“Are you cold Harley?” he wondered. “Just a little.” she replied. She watched as he shrugged out of his jacket and wrapped it around her before she asked, “When will you find out anything?” “Hopefully in the next few months they’ll let me know something.” Gus said as they both sat there in silence as they both realized what his going to college would mean for them.
Harley was brought back to the present when she heard footsteps behind her; she smiled she’d know those footsteps anywhere. He sat down beside her and gently kissed her lips when he said, “Thanks for meeting me here.” She grinned and nodded and her eyes twinkled as she saw the picnic basket. While Gus laid out the picnic Harley watched him and she saw how tense he was.
“Sweetie what is it?” she asked placing a hand over his to stop his movements.
His eyes locked with hers, “Can we eat first?” he asked. She nodded as they quietly talked and ate their lunch and as they ate they made each other smile and laugh as they always did. After lunch Gus reached in his pocket and pulled out an envelope and handed it to her. When she reached for it she knew what it was it was the letter from George Town University. It was the last letter to come in; all the others had come back and he hadn’t been accepted.
“Do you want me to open it?” she asked. He nodded as he watched her start to open the letter but then softly said, “Harley wait.” Looking up at him Harley moved closer as he said, “What if this is the same as all the others and I don’t get in?” “Then you’ll keep trying Gus until you do, you’re a smart guy and any school would be lucky to get you as a student.” Harley answered. He smiled, “Thanks, go ahead.” He said as Harley nodded and continued opening the letter.
He didn’t move as she read the letter. When she laid the letter in her lap and looked at him he ran his hands over his face as he said, “I didn’t get in.” “Gus, I don’t know how to say this but George Town wants you – you got in!” she said smiling.
“I know I didn’t get in I --.” His head snapped up, “I got in?” he asked. She laughed as she nodded “You got in!” Gus grabbed her in a tight hug and just held her. He leaned back to look at her without letting go as he brushed hair behind her ear and said, “Do you know how important you are to me?” She smiled and nodded as she said, “You are very important to me too, you know that!” then handed him the letter from the college so he could read it himself.
She watched as he re-read the letter and saw his eyes go stormy and tears brightness them. “Gus what is it?” she ask already knowing what he was reading. He looked up and she saw one tear roll down his cheek. Clearing his voice of the tears he softly replied, “I’m supposed to start there this fall Harley, and be moved in the dorm by August 26th.” He squeezed her hand tightly when she answered, “I know. That only gives us a month and a half.” Standing and walking a few feet from her he turned and looked away.
“Gus this is a great chance you can’t pass up.” She said as she stared at him. “But what about you?” he asked. “Me? I still have one more year of high school left and then I’ll try to go to college then get a job. By the time I’m through school you’ll probably have a good job in D.C.”
He turned “Can we spend time together before I leave?” She stood and walked to him and placed her hand in his when she said, “I’ll help you get ready to go to George Town, I promise.” As they walked home Gus wrapped his arm around her and wondered how he would live without seeing his best friend.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Over the next several months Gus and Harley spent as much time together as they could. They would go out to see movies and get something to eat or they would take walks on the beach or whatever they could thing of that would give them both memories to remember. One day they went to the picture booth at the mall and had their pictures taken so they would both have pictures of them together. Harley also helped Gus get the stuff he needed for school or she’d help him pack his stuff.
As the time came for Gus to leave they stood outside Gus’s car tears were in both there eyes as he said, “I guess I have to go now.” She nodded as he hugged her tight as he whispered, “Don’t forget me please?” She watched his eyes as she said, “Never, Gus you’re my best friend.” When he set her on her feet he said, “If you ever need me all you have to do is call and I’ll be here, when I get to school I call you and give you the phone number for my room, until then call my cell okay.” She nodded as she watched him pull the star necklace that she had worn ever since he gave it to her; out from her sweater.
He held the necklace in his hand for a minute before he brought it to his lips and kissed the star. After he kissed it a second time he let it fall.
“Remember our stars Harley.” he whispered quietly.
He watched as her tears fell while he gently kissed her lips. As he pulled away he quietly said, “You’re in my heart always!” She smiled through the tears, “I know, you’re in my heart; go or it will take longer for you to get there.” He nodded as he hugged her again and then pulled away and slowly walked to his car and got in and drove away.
Later that night
Harley answered when the phone rang, “Hello” she replied. “Harley it’s me.” Gus said.
“Gus!” Harley answered. “Did you get there okay?” “Yeah, I’ve been here for a few hours and was trying to get unpacked a little, and when they gave me the dorm phone number I had to call you.” He said. She smiled as she grabbed a piece of paper and said, “Okay go ahead Gus.” “Here you go, it’s 435 -555-8743.” “I got it Gus.” Harley said.
“Are you outside beautiful?” Gus asked. Harley grabbed the cordless and ran outside. “I am now.” She answered looking up at the stars. “I’m standing at my window looking at the stars.” Gus said. “I’m looking at them too.” Harley replied.
“I had to call and tell you good night and that I’ll talk to you soon.” he said. “Goodnight Harley.” Gus said. “Goodnight Gus.” Harley answered as they both watched the stars.
Little did they know they both their lives were changing?

Soulmates... Chapter 9
Both Gus and Harley are 22 now. Gus is still at George Town and Harley has gone through the Police Academy and become a cop. Gus has come home twice since he’s been at school. Both Gus and Harley keep in touch; calling each other frequently and talking for hours. They both miss each other very much. He still calls Harley just to hear her voice and Harley does the same.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Harley pulled the light windbreaker jacket she was wearing tighter around her as she sat down in the early September sun.
“Hi, it’s Harley. You knew I’d be here didn’t you?” she wondered out loud as she ran her fingers over the name:
JOSEPH AUGUSTINO
APRIL 18, 1945 – September 12, 1980
WORLD’S BEST DAD AND THE GREATEST COP.
“Gus called me today to talk about you and how much he loved and missed you. He hoped you would understand why he couldn’t come see you today since he’s away at school.” Harley said. She began to pull the weeds up from the grave as she started talking again.
“I’m not sure if Gus would like it if he knew I’ve come to see you every year on this day since Gus and I turned 17. You are important to him so that make you important to me. Gus is my heart.” She replied smiling. “Mr. Augustino, I know we never met but I always hoped that if we ever met you would like me. I have to meet my brother for lunch; so I have to go. Standing Harley held two roses in her hand, "He doesn't know about me coming or bringing the roses. The red rose is for Gus – he loves you so much. The yellow rose is from me –so I can remember my friend’s dad.” She said as she laid them on the headstone then turned and walked to her car.
She noticed him as he walked in the restaurant; he had black hair and dark brown eyes and wearing a charcoal gray suit with a red tie. To her his features were striking and she wondered who he was. While she was talking to Frank she looked up to get the waitress’s attention and realized that the man was watching her. While they were eating Harley heard Frank’s beeper and he excused himself to make a call. When he came back he looked at her
“Sis, I have to get back to the station.” He replied. When she threw her napkin down and started to stand Frank put a hand on her shoulder to stop her.
“No, sis stay here and finish your lunch and I’ll see back at the station later.” He said walking away leaving her to finish her lunch. A few minutes later she heard someone clearing their throat and when she looked up the man in the suit was standing next to her. He smiled as he asked, “May I join you?” She nodded as she replied, “Sure that would be nice.”
Holding her hand out she said, “I’m Harley Cooper.” He gently took her hand in his and as he shook it he replied, “My name is Alan – Michael Spaulding, it’s nice to meet you Harley.”
Both Harley and Alan – Michael sat there for a long time and talked about anything and everything. She looked at her watch and then said, “I’m sorry, but I have to get back to the station.” Alan – Michael nodded as he said okay but I’d like to see you again?” Harley turned and grabbed a napkin and wrote her phone number on it then she said, “Call me!” he nodded as he watched her run out of the restaurant.
Later that night
Harley walked wearily in the house after the long day at the office. As she was about to walk upstairs she heard a knock at the door and turned to answer it. When she opened it her eyes widened in surprise when she saw the two bouquets of flowers.
“Ms. Cooper?” the delivery boy asked. “Yes?” she asked as she reached for the flowers as he continued talking, “These are for you, if you’d sign here please.” He asked handing her the clip board. Harley quickly signed for them and shut the door. When she sat down she lifted the card from the first bouquet and read it.
“Harley,
I really enjoyed talking to you and spending time with you today. I’d love to spend some more time with you.
I had a good time.
Sincerely,
Alan – Michael
She smiled as she placed the card in the holder and reached for the second bouquet’s card and opened it.
Hey Beautiful,
I really wish we could go for one of our long walks on the beach and talk and spend time together!
I need to know you’re looking at the stars.”
Always,
Gus
After she placed the card in the holder she reached for the phone and as she dialed Gus’s number walked outside and sat on her back steps and waited for him to answer.
“Hello.” Cody said. “Hey Cody, its Harley is Gus there?” she asked. “Yeah he is hold on.” He said. Harley could hear as Cody; Gus’s roommate passed him the phone.
“Hello.” Gus replied. “I’m looking at the stars are you?” Harley asked. Gus grabbed the phone and ran outside and sat down, “Yeah I am.” He said smiling. “I got your flowers Gus, they’re beautiful thank you.” She said.
“I just needed to hear your voice again.” He said softly. “I know, are you okay?” Harley asked. “I guess, but even after 12 years its still gets me sometimes you know.” “What else did you do today?” Harley asked trying to keep him thinking about something else. “I had to spend most of my day working on a project for one of my classes. He replied. “How was work and the rest of your day?” he asked. “Tiring, Frank and I had several interrogations to do today.” She said tiredly. “But I love it Gus, I really do.” “I know sweetie, I wish I could see you working as a cop.” He said smiling.
“What else did you do today?” He asked. “I had lunch with Frank today and then after Frank left I met someone his name is Alan – Michael Spaulding. He’s very sweet.” She said. “You met a guy today?” Gus asked quietly. “Yeah he’s very cute and very sweet –.” Before she could finish the sentence she heard the beep on the phone.
“Hang on Gus, got a call.” She answered. “Okay.” He replied. When she came back she said, “Gus, I gotta go, It’s Alan- Michael; I’ll talk to you tomorrow.” She said.
“Gus are you there?” Harley asked. “Yeah beautiful I’ll talk to you tomorrow, Harley remember the stars. He asked. “Always!” Bye.” She said as she hung up.
As Gus went to bed that night all he could think about was Harley. Was he losing his best friend anyway? He wondered. Tears came to his eyes at the thought of not having her in his life.
Soulmates... Chapter 10
Chapter 10 takes place a year after Harley met Alan–Michael. Over the last year they have spent a lot of time together. She told him about her parents and how she wished her father was there for her more. Within that year she has been introduced to Alan. Alan-Michael surprised her by taking her to a romantic dinner and asking her to marry him. She said "yes!" Gus has wondered about Harley’s new guy and had been trying to finish his work so he could go home for Thanksgiving break. He’s tried to call her several times but she wasn’t home. While he’s home he has to tell her that he has an internship at Quantico for the FBI.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
He just stood there looking at her for a few minutes before moving toward her. He couldn’t help but watch her; she fascinated him. He slowly walked toward her desk and just stood beside her not saying anything. Harley sat at her desk working on some notes for an interrogation that she and Frank had just finished. She didn’t notice anyone standing there until the hair stood up on the back of her neck. She looked up to see Alan-Michael standing there with a brown paper bag in his hand.
“Hey honey, what are you doing here?” she asked smiling as he leaned over and kissed her. “I thought I’d bring you some lunch.” He replied when he broke the kiss and set the bag down on her desk. She stood up and wrapped her arms around his neck as they just stood there holding each other. “Thanks, I love you.” She said as she sat down and he perched on the edge of her desk. “You’re welcome, I love you too. I just wanted to make sure you ate something, I know you’re busy honey so I’ll let you get back to work.” He said softly as he kissed her and stood up. She watched as he walked out of the station.
While she ate her lunch she worked on some notes. She looked up as Frank walked in from his lunch break and walked straight to her with a concerned look on his face.
“Frank what’s wrong?” Harley asked when she stopped what she was doing. He walked around to her and took her arm and quietly whispered in her ear
“Sis, something’s come up, we need to go home.” “What?” Harley asked. “I’ll tell you on the drive home. Let me go clear it with the Chief.” She nodded as she watched him walk in the chief’s office than she began to gather her stuff.
“Hey Williams, will you tell Frank I went across the street to the restaurant to grab a drink and I’ll meet him in the car.” She asked. When he nodded she left and went across the street.
Across the street
Harley walked in and went to the counter to order a drink. When the man came out to take her order he just stared at her for a minute before he asked, “My name’s Rex how may I help you?” “Hey Rex I’d like a diet coke please.” he nodded and turned to fill her order as she said, “I haven’t seen you in here before.” When he set her drink in front of her he smiled, “I only started two weeks ago.” He said as she nodded then paid for her drink and left. As the door closed behind her Rex sagged against the wall and let out a breath as tears came to his eyes
“Harley, my baby I’m here I wish I could let you know.” He whispered as he watched out the window as he saw her get in the car with Frank and drive away. He turned and dialed a number.
He waited until the person picked up, “Deenie it’s me, yeah I know but I had to talk to you. Have you talked to Frank?” He listened for a minute, “well deenie of course he’s upset he hasn’t seen you in a long time and we walk back in their lives. I saw Harley today. He waited, “Of course she doesn’t remember me as your cousin.” He said.

Soulmates... Chapter 10 Continued
“Frank what’s going on?” Harley asked as she looked at him concerned. He looked at her as he drove home, “I was sitting at the park eating my lunch when a woman called my name; sis when I turned it was mom and she was walking toward me.” He replied as he watched her face. She didn’t move as her brain tried to process what Frank just told her. “Mama’s back?” she whispered. Frank drove until he reached the 5th street Diner’s parking lot then stopped the car.
After Frank had stopped the car he slid next to her and wrapped his arms around her and he could feel her heart racing. Looking at him with wide tear filled eyes
“Where is she Frankie?” she asked quietly.
“She’s waiting for us at the house.” He said as he held her close. Frank slid back to his seat and drove the few blocks from the diner to the house. As she stepped out Frank walked around and took her hand in his just as the front door opened and they both looked up and saw Nadine standing at the door waiting on them.
Harley stood still just looking at Nadine for a minute, it was as if she couldn’t seem to put one foot in front of the other and walk toward her mom. Frank put his arm around her, they walked up the steps. Both Frank and Harley stopped in front of their mom as she reached to hug them both. When Nadine hugged them she noticed that they both held themselves as still as possible.
“Oh Frankie, Harley I’ve missed you so much!” Nadine replied as she looked at them. “Have you?” Harley asked as she brushed past Frank and went into the house. She turned as she started into her room
“I’ll be back I have to talk to someone before I can deal with this, Frank.” She said as she disappeared behind the door. After Harley changed her clothes she lay across her bed and reached for the phone and dialed. “Hello?” Cody asked as he answered the phone. “Cody, its Harley is Gus there?” she asked. “Yeah hold on.” He replied as he hand Gus the phone.
As she waited Harley couldn’t stop the tears that had finally started since she saw her mother.
“Hey Harley.” Gus said smiling at the thought of hearing her voice. “Gus, I need you!” she said as the tears fell.
His heart began to race when he heard the tears. He heard her say something but could tell what she was saying.
“Beautiful, I’m right here; what’s wrong, tell me please?” he asked.
Harley tried to calm down and start again. “I need you!” she repeated. “Baby what’s going on?” he asked. “My mama’s back.” She said softly. “When?” he wondered as a flash back ran through his head of when they were sitting on the back steps as kids and she told him about her parents.
Knowing how hard it was for her to even see her mom Gus quickly wrote Cody a note and handed it to him as he said, “Sweetie, I need to finish up here and pack since Thanksgiving break starts tomorrow okay but I promise I’ll be with you. I’ll be there in a few hours.” He said as he scrambled around trying to pack while Cody tried to help him.
“Thanks Gus.” Harley said. “Anytime beautiful you know that.” He said as he grabbed his sweaters out of the closet. “Harley why didn’t you ask Alan-Michael to help you through this?” Gus asked even though he hated too.
“Because, it’s you I need to have with me. I have to go mom’s waiting I’ll see you in a few hours.” She said as they said their goodbyes and hung up.
Harley tried to dry her eyes then walked out to sit next to Frank. “Why are you here?” she wondered as she looked at the mama she hadn’t seen since she was little. “Oh baby, I was just telling Frankie I’ve been back for a few weeks but I wasn’t sure how to approach either of you just yet.” Nadine said. Neither Frank nor Harley said anything as she continued, “Do either of you remember me talking about my cousins?” she asked. Frank nodded, “Yeah I do.” He said. Harley shook her head. “Well I was standing in line waiting to order some lunch the other day when someone called my name and I turned and saw a long- lost cousin, he has been in town for about two weeks trying to find me, his name is Rex Mancini.”
After they had sat talking for a while Frank suggested that he cook dinner while the talked. While they talked and ate Harley continued to try and figure out a why to ask her mom the one question that had been in her mind since seeing her mother this afternoon. Frank had been watching Harley, he slowly scooted his chair closer to her as he asked
“Sis what are you think---.” Before Frank could finish the doorbell rang. “I’ll get it.” She said as she jumped up and walked to the door while Frank followed her. She smiled when she saw who was standing there.
“Hey Beautiful!” Gus said as she launched herself in his arms and held her tight. While he held her he heard her crying so he gently ran his hand over her hair, “It will be okay, we’ll deal with this together.” She nodded against his shoulder. When he carried her in the door Harley heard
“Gus what are you doing here?” Frank asked. “I asked him to come home.” Harley said as she still held on to him.” Nadine quietly watched as she saw this young man take care of her baby.
When Gus, Frank, and Harley walked back in the kitchen Gus stared at the woman who had walked out on Harley. He felt Harley take his hand as she quietly said, “Gus, this is Nadine Cooper, my mom.” Gus held out his hand and shook her hand. Harley fixed Gus a plate of food and brought it to him and then sat down. Gus watched as the three of them talked.
He felt Harley look at him so he took her hand in his and squeezed it. “Mom why did you leave us?” Harley asked. She watched as her mom took a deep breath before she said, “Oh baby, its hard to explain.” She answered. “Try.” Gus said softly but with an edge to his voice knowing how hard it was for Harley to ask that question. Nadine looked at Gus and his and Harley’s linked fingers
“I still had my dreams of becoming a star and I wasn’t ready to give that up to be a wife and mother. I thought I could but without your father I wasn’t ready to be a single mom. I knew your grandfather would take care of both of you if I left to go after my dreams.” She said quietly.
“I’d better go now.” Nadine said as she stood and walked to the door. “I’ll be back tomorrow and we can talk some more. Rex will be with me, he wants to see you both again.” She said as she looked at her children then walked out the door.
“Are you okay?” Gus asked as he hugged Harley. She nodded as she looked at Gus and saw how tired he was.
“Oh, Gus I’m sorry you’re exhausted. She said as he nodded. “Yeah I am. I’ve been trying to get all my work done so I wouldn’t have to bring any with me.” He replied. “Did you?” Harley asked. He nodded when she continued, “Why didn’t you tell me you were tired?” He ran his hand through her hair “Because you needed to know I was here.” He answered.
“Sweetie now that you know, I have to go, I don’t want to fall asleep on you but I’m asleep on my feet.” Gus said. She nodded as she led him to the door. “I’ll be at my house if you need me okay.” She nodded as they stood looking at each other. “You rest and I’ll call you tomorrow – so get some sleep and have sweet dreams.” She said as they stepped on the porch.
“As you wish beautiful.” Gus said quietly when he walked down the steps heading toward his house.
After Gus reached his house he stopped and looked at the stars and as he had done when he was a kid he said, “Good night Harley.” Back at her house Harley was still on the porch watching the stars when she said “Good night Gus.”
Soulmates... Chapter 11
The next day
After Harley was showered and dressed she went to the kitchen to fix herself some breakfast when the doorbell rang. When she opened the door she saw Gus standing there and moved aside to let him in.
“Hey I thought you would still be asleep.” Harley said as he followed her into the kitchen.
“Nope I went to bed right after I got home last night. Plus I figured if you needed to or wanted to talk we could this morning before your mom and her cousin came back.” Gus said as he sat down. As she was eating and he drinking a cup of coffee he thought for a minute before he asked, “How did you know she was in town Harley?” She looked up for a minute then said, “She saw Frank at lunch yesterday while he was taking his lunch break in the park.” He nodded not saying anything since he could tell by the look in her eyes she wasn’t finished talking.
“Gus it was so strange when I first saw her yesterday, it was like I couldn’t get my feet to move toward her because I thought if I did she would disappear again. However, when I was standing there in front of her all I wanted to do was get away from her.” She replied.
“It was right after that you called me wasn’t it?” Gus asked.
She nodded and started to say something but stopped when the doorbell rang again. Harley jumped up and told Gus she’d be right back he nodded as she went to answer the door. When Harley walked back in the kitchen Gus saw a man dressed in a dark three piece suit with her. He looked the man over from head to toe. When the man saw Gus sitting in the kitchen he wondered who he was.
“Gus, this is Alan-Michael Spaulding; Alan Michael this Gus Augustino.” Harley said watching the two of them together.
Gus stood and shook hands as he said, “It’s nice to meet you Alan-Michael.” Alan-Michael nodded then turned to look at Harley. “I just wanted to come by before I went to work and tell you Good Morning.” He said as he gently caressed her face. “That was very sweet of you, thank you.” She said. Alan-Michael stood “I’d better go before I’m late.” He said as Gus watched Harley walk Alan-Michael to the door then lean in and kiss him. He turned away and sat back down when he saw them kiss. Harley leaned back against the door after she watched Alan-Michael drive away. As she leaned back she wondered how on earth she was going to be able to tell Gus that she was getting married to Alan-Michael.
While she was standing there Frank walked in wearing jeans and a black tee-shirt. “Hey sis, who was at the door?” He asked. “Oh it was Alan-Michael, he came to tell me good morning.” She said smiling. When they both started to the kitchen Frank asked, “I thought I heard Gus earlier?” She nodded, “You did he’s in the kitchen. He wanted to be here for me by the time mom got here.” While Frank got some breakfast Harley asked, “Aren’t we going to work today?” Frank shook his head, “No, the chief let us have the day off.” Gus could see how nervous Harley was getting so he began to ask them about working as cops.
A little while later, Frank went to answer the door when it rang. Harley knew it was her and couldn’t move. Frank stuck his head in the kitchen and made eye contact with Gus and nodded then stepped back out.
“Harley, they’re here.” Gus said as he stood. He slipped his hand in hers as she stood, “I’m right beside you and I’m not going anywhere.” He said as he felt her squeeze his hand when they walked over and sat on the couch together. “Hey baby.” Nadine said softly. Harley looked up at her mom but didn’t see the man with her right away.
“Frankie, Harley I’d like you to meet my cousin Rex Mancini.” Nadine said as the man walked up and stood next to her. Gus felt Harley gasps as she saw the man “Rex?” Harley asked puzzled. “Hi Harley.” he said quietly. “You’re mom’s cousin?” she asked. When he didn’t answer Gus began to watch him and realized something wasn’t quite right so he wrapped his arm around Harley since he wasn’t sure what was going on. Nadine saw Frank shift from foot to foot and she figured this was the best time as any so she looked at Rex and he nodded.
Nadine walked in between where Frank was standing and Harley was sitting and said, “Frankie, Harley there is something I need to tell you.” “What mom?” Frank asked puzzled. “It’s about Re--?” she started to say but Frank interrupted, “What about him.” “He’s not my long – lost cousin.” She said as Gus watched Rex step closer. “No I’m not Frank.” He said.
“Who are you?” Harley whispered.
Before he could say anything she looked at Gus. He gently took her face in his hands, “I’m right here, whatever he says I’m right here.” Gus said softly. Harley nodded and looked back to the man standing in front of her but looking at Frank.
“Frank, Harley, my name is Buzz and I’m your father.” Buzz said quietly.

Soulmates... Chapter 11 Continued
While Frank stood there in shock Buzz knelt in front of Harley and took her hand as he said, “its true baby, I’m your father. I didn’t die in Vietnam.” Frank was beginning to come around and looked at his mother and when she looked at him; she nodded in confirmation that he was indeed looking at the man who was their father. “Why are you here?” Frank snapped as he stood still.
“After I realized you all thought I was dead I figured I’d let you continue to think that but the more I did I missed your mom. So a few weeks ago I found your mom and we decided to come back. She told me about you Frankie as well as the daughter I never knew I had. We both wanted to see you Frank and my beautiful little girl and your mom.” Buzz said. While Gus was listening to everything; he watched Harley who had yet to say anything but continued to stare at the father she never knew.
“Harley baby are you okay?” Nadine asked as she started walking toward her but Frank grabbed her arm stopping her.
Buzz looked back at Harley and saw that tears were running down her cheeks. He reached up to wipe them away with his fingers, “You’re dead.” She whispered. He stopped his fingers in mid air when he heard her; and watched as she jumped up and ran past Frank out the door. They all didn’t move for a few seconds until Frank took Harley’s jacket out of the closet and handed it to Gus when he jumped up and ran to the door. When he got to the door he turned to face Harley’s parents
“How could you do this to both your children?” Gus asked looking at Buzz and Nadine.
“You left Frank to raise her and he did a good job; but they are your kids.” He said to Nadine. Looking at Buzz he said, “They both needed a father but Harley has wanted a father all her life.” Frank looked at Gus, “Why didn’t she tell me?” he asked. “Because she knew you felt the same way.” He said as he turned and walked out and slammed the door. Knowing exactly where to find her Gus headed to the park.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Park
Walking through the park Gus spotted her sitting under a tree by the swings. Taking off his jacket he went to her. When he reached her he leaned over and wrapped his jacket around her then sat down. She didn’t move until he slipped his hand in hers. When she turned to face him he wrapped his arms around her and rocked back and forth as he listened to her sobs.
“You go ahead and cry Harley, I’m right here with you.” Gus said quietly as he kissed her hair. He didn’t know how long they sat there but eventually Harley’s sobs died down to loud sniffles. She leaned back against the tree and so did Gus so he could keep his arm around her.
“Why now Gus?” she asked. “I don’t know sweetie I don’t know.” He said. “I’ve always wished for my parents ever since I was little, you are the only one who really understood how much I missed them.” She said and watched as he nodded.
“Now they are here finally.” She said as she looked at Gus. He nodded, “You’ve always dreamed of having a relationship with them baby.” He replied. “I know but how can I do that considering everything they’ve put us through.” She wondered out loud. “Harley, I know you can do it if you really want it.” Gus said smiling. “But…?” she said hesitantly.
Gus laughed, “Harley this is me you’re talking to! I know you want it so set your own pace on getting to know your parents again and let them know that.”
“You’re right, but its scary knowing my dad’s here and wants to know me.” Harley said. “He’s scared to, I could tell by the look on his face when he told you who he was.” Gus said.
He looked down at the hand he was holding when he felt something against his palm. When he opened his hand he saw the diamond ring that was on her ring finger. Harley felt him let go of her hand and she looked to see why and she realized he had seen her engagement ring.
He looked at her for a minute then down at her ring then back to her face. “You’re getting married?” he asked softly. She nodded, “Yeah Alan-Michael and I are planning the wedding. Gus, he so sweet I love him so much.” She said happily. “That’s great sweetie I’m happy for you.” Gus said.
“Can we just stay here awhile?” Harley asked. “Sure you bet.” Gus replied. After a couple of hours Harley turned to Gus, “Are Nadine and Buzz still at the house?” “Yeah probably, you ready to go back?” he asked. She nodded as she stood and gave Gus back his jacket since he was cold and put hers on. As they walked back she said, “Thanks for being with me I couldn’t have done this without you.” “I’ll always be there for you, you know that.” He said smiling.
When they reached her door he stopped her, “Sweetie, there’s something I need to do right now, I want to give you a chance to talk to your parents so I’ll be back okay?” She nodded “I’ll have my cell with me if you need to reach me.” He said hugging her. She watched as he walked down the street.
Gus slowly walked through leaves and when he reached where he was going he stopped and looked up at the words.
WORLD’S BEST DAD AND THE GREATEST COP.
“Hey Dad, Happy Thanksgiving a few weeks early.” he said smiling. “I’m doing good school is keeping me really busy but I’ll be finished at the end of next year. Gus pulled his collar higher as the wind blew. “Dad I have an internship at Quantico with the FBI when I finish school which I’m really happy about.” “I need to talk to you about something dad, it’s about Harley do you remember her?” “We’ve been best friends since we were ten years old dad and I found out today she’s getting married.
I’m losing her dad and that hurts so much. I didn’t tell her about Quantico and I not going to she has a lot to deal with now.” While he pulled up weeds he said, “Dad, I wish you could have met her you would have liked her very much. I know it sounds stupid dad but I don’t want to lose my best friend; How do I manage without my best friend in my life?” he wondered.
Gus stood and swept the leaves off the top of the headstone when he did he noticed the red and yellow roses sitting there.
“I wonder who left the roses for you. At least someone cares enough to leave flowers on graves that don’t get that many visits, dad I’m sorry I can’t come see you more but I love you so much and I miss you everyday.” Gus reached over and fingered the roses and when he did a petal off of each rose fell so he picked them up and put them in his jacket pocket. “I’d better get going dad, it’s pretty cold and hot chocolate at the house and a nap sounds pretty good.”
While he walked backwards toward the gate he said, “I love you dad.” He said. Little did Gus know -- Harley is the one who spends time with his dad.
